Siege and Storm
Siege and Storm | Leigh Bardugo
Darkness never dies. Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land, all while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. But she can't outrun her past or her destiny for long. The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling's game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her--or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm. Siege and Storm is the second book in The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo.

As second books go, this one held it's own against the "second book curse". Alina's narrative drug a few times for me but the story was really pretty good. A lot of times you get romance focused fantasy in YA, but Alina is often too busy being a badass to have time to worry too much about her love interests. I like the change of pace and the tone she sets for younger readers.

I ship Alina/Mal on the run forever. Ruin and Rising up next!

I‘m not a big fantasy reader, but occasionally a series sucks me in and sticks it‘s hooks in me. I‘ve thoroughly enjoyed the first two books and am looking forward to the third.

Four stars of YA enjoyment which demanded little of me. A strong middle book in a trilogy, Siege & Storm offers everything you‘d expect, action, sexual tension, betrayal, mystery, plenty of red herrings, all packaged within a pretty well-tested narrative and character arc. A great escapist read.

Centique My daughter just finished reading this today too and loved it. I‘ll borrow it soon! 2mo

The second in the shadow and bone series picks up right where the first left off, with Alina and Mal on the run. But soon they find themselves pulled back into the battle for Ravka when the Darkling unveils his troubling new power.

So I get it. The series is addictive. Thinking back to my 12 year old self, I would have probably been obsessed. I can see the appeal to young readers: it is age appropriate but delves into grown-up issues like pain, loss, sorrow, defeat, love and longing. Young peoole feel all of the above often more acutely than adults whose senses have dulled over the decades. Cannot wait to find out what happens next and have a secret crush on the Darkling. 😳

A bit too YA-ish compared to the first book for me. Some aspects of plot were fairly predictable. But good writing, and I‘m invested in the characters, so I‘ll for sure finish the series :)

I loved “Shadow and Bone,” so I had high hopes—and I was not disappointed! Bardugo allows her universe to become significantly darker than in the first book, introduces a whole new, fantastic, crew of characters, and ends with a real tearjerker. If you didn‘t like the first book, this probably also won‘t be for you, but I found it thrilling from beginning to end.

I think I liked this more the first time around. You can see Alina trying to come into her own more which I great but she's still very much in the background when it comes to Mal. I'm hoping she finds her way to becoming the badass I can see her being 🤷‍♀️

This was my #doubkespin back in February or something. Happy to finally have it checked off the list 🤣

I loved this book as much as the first. The characters and world-building are so much fun. And, this series is helping me realize how much I love series with defined villains! Excited to finish the initial trilogy in August

I was unhappy with Alina‘s choice at the end till I saw her purpose. Now she has 3 men trying to persuade her they are the one and only for her…all while she‘s trying to save the world. A good picture of how we try to find a balance of the good and wicked in ourselves.

#2021Book60
I enjoyed this book way more than the first one, probably because there is way less world-building and a lot more plot in this one. I also really liked the new characters that were introduced in this book. My biggest complaint with this book (and probably the series as a whole) is the fact that the main love interest is so busy being a whiny, jealous brat that it makes no sense why the main character continues to be in love with him.

I actually struggled to get into this book, but by the middle I was hooked. I liked a lot of the characters who were introduced in this part of the story, and all the characters from the previous book had some character development. I am actually surprised how emotionally real those characters are. They had human responses to trying circumstances. Unlike most heroes, they weren't perfect.

A great book to lead us into the last part of the trilogy.

A good continuation from the first book. Is it just me or is this book very fast paced?
It was a lot of things happening all at once.
But I appreciate the author‘s bleak outlook on the story. Where there needs to be drastic changes, she brings it with no mercy. As harsh as it sounds, it‘s necessary for the storyline. (Spoiler in the comments) So far I like where the story‘s going.
Rating: 4/5

driftylew As someone that judges a book by its cover, I find this cover horrible. My brain can‘t read that title. But I have heard good things about the Bone and Ash series so I will@read it anyway. 5mo

“Why won‘t you leave me alone?” I whispered one night as he hovered behind me while I tried to work at my desk.

Long minutes passed. I didn‘t think he would answer. I even had time to hope he might have gone, until I felt his hand on my shoulder.

“Then I‘d be alone, too,“ he said, and he stayed the whole night through, till the lamps burned down to nothing.”

It seems that most readers liked this 2nd book better than the 1st. Hmmm…..not me. 🤔
I raced through Shadow and Bone. But I thought this storyline dragged somewhat. The middle of the book was a bit of a slog. Still….I want to know what happens next, so onward I go!

This week I entered the Grishaverse. Listened to Shadow and Bone then jumped right into Seige and Storm. Fortunately I also have a Library copy of this one to check the map and read when I take a break.

Enjoyed this 2nd book so much more than 1st. Great plot twist that really add to the adventure. Typical 2nd book of a Trilogy Cliffhanger. Joy of being late to the party already have Ruin and Rising for next week's #listenwhileyouwork 👩🏻‍🌾🎧📖

Book 2. I didn‘t like this one as much as the first one. The beginning was so full of action as well as the last 100 pages. But I think it was repetitive in the middle about the strategies they were going to use. Sometimes struggled to continue with the story. We discussed the book in our informal book club “The Forgotten Book Club”. We had the same impression. It was so-so for me but obviously necessary to continue with the series. 3.4⭐️

⭐⭐⭐ lot of stuff happens in this. Alina and Mal's relationship is tested. Alina has to make some hard choices. She has yet to learn a lot about her powers and yet to grow as a confident and a mature leader. Politics vs religion is a strong theme.
Many plots were predictable but m eager to know the ending in the third book. A pleasant read.

It starts with an amazing, epic battle, goes onto a love triangle of sorts and ends with a siege. Barring the love triangle in the middle (which was not entirely bad) this was quite entertaining. Second book of a trilogy are almost always the least likable but it holds well thanks to a tremendous battle in the beginning.
QUICKLY ONTO THE NEXT ONE!!!!

The first half of Siege and Storm was slow-going, particularly before we meet Nikolai. Alina is still annoying and whiny throughout the book. However, now the plot has higher stakes, involving political intrigue and an epic battle, and I am for it.

As much as I love Nikolai, I hate Mal. Alina, annoying as she is, is going through so much and I can feel a stroke of sympathy for her when Mal demand her to care for his fragile ego, too.

The second part of my very cherished distraction. Bardugo did not disappoint once again and the characters, the development of the plot and prose was fluid, transporting me to a world filled with adrenaline and magic and elements that I can get lost in which I was. Again. Can't wait to read the final of the Grishaverse series. It's only because of this that I have picked up reading again and feel good about my days. So yaaay. Means much to me.
