Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk
Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk | Kathleen Rooney
It’s the last day of 1984, and 85-year-old Lillian Boxfish is about to take a walk. As she traverses a grittier Manhattan, a city anxious after an attack by a still-at-large subway vigilante, she encounters bartenders, bodega clerks, chauffeurs, security guards, bohemians, criminals, children, parents, and parents-to-be—in surprising moments of generosity and grace. While she strolls, Lillian recalls a long and eventful life that included a brief reign as the highest-paid advertising woman in America—a career cut short by marriage, motherhood, divorce, and a breakdown. A love letter to city life—however shiny or sleazy—Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney paints a portrait of a remarkable woman across the canvas of a changing America: from the Jazz Age to the onset of the AIDS epidemic; the Great Depression to the birth of hip-hop.

What an amazing #bookmail parcel to receive any day, but especially on a Monday after a blah day at work!

I have to admit, @Caroline2 I did emit rather a loud squeal when I saw the book - it‘s one I‘ve been wanting to read for ages, mainly because it‘s set in NYC.

Then there were bookmarks, chocolate, a Squirrel Nutkin postcard.... and a lovely note!

You‘re such a great friend 😘 and yes, let‘s do another #buddyread soon....⬇️

squirrelbrain The Romanovs is maybe a bit big and scary though! We‘d be buddyreading well into next year....🤣 2d

It‘s New Years Eve 1984 and Lillian Boxfish, aged 84(ish), is taking a walk through Manhattan. Formerly the highest paid advertising woman in the country, Lillian looks back on the highs and lows of a long life and career as she meets the diverse denizens populating a 1980s NYC in decline. Lillian‘s perceptions of the city and its people, both past and present, are so authentic, full of wisdom, generosity, and a welcome touch of the bitter.

Having volunteered in nursing homes when I was younger, I know that the older people get, the more interesting stories they have to tell. You just have to be ready to sit back and go on a journey with them. I loved Lillian Boxfish's story. She is a character I want to keep with me and call up when I need strength.

BarbaraJean Great picks! And you‘re not alone—I had the same experience last Saturday except it was my feet instead of the car. I read this book ages ago, but I don‘t think I put it up here. One of my sisters sent a group text(3 sisters and mom)asking if any of us had read it. I have! So had my other sister, but not Mom. I feel so empowered! 😄 They‘re all voracious readers and I can‘t keep up with them. Anyway, the book is on sale Kindle today Although it‘s fiction, it is based on the life of a remarkable sounding woman.

This was a part of #BOTMbuddyread organized by @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Completed this in December but a busy life and traveling made it impossible to post a review. Loved this book. It is based on the real Margaret Fishback. Set on the last day of 1984, the narrative entwines with Boxfish‘s own life as she takes a walk and meets really interesting characters. The novel throws up questions on feminism, identity, office and the home, and life.

I started this on New Year's Eve (because that's when Lillian took her walk) and had a hard time connecting to the story. One day I forgot the book and switched to audio. That did it. Xe Sands makes it feel like you're sitting and listening to a friend tell her story. I loved it.

I loved Lillian because of quotes like this one. Her wit (and courage) to say what was on her mind while still upholding proprietary was fantastic. I enjoyed her NYE antics more than the flashbacks, because she sounds like a hoot of an octogenarian, but her past was an important part of the story. I hope to be able to walk as much as Ms. Boxfish as I age. 🚶🏻‍♀️#mountTBR #catsoflitsy

This is the second time I have read this book and have to say this is a thoroughly enjoyable book. Lillian is a wonderful character and great to travel the streets of New York with her , and come across the many people she chats to. Alongside this we have an excellent telling of Lillian‘s life, which is far from boring. A great book to read at this time of the year as most of the events take place on New Year‘s Eve. #BOTMBuddyRead

I so enjoyed reading this with the #BOTMbuddyread! Lillian was fascinating, and I loved walking around NYC with her on her New Year‘s Eve journey, meeting a cast of wonderful characters along the way. Her past reminiscences are woven together with the present, with the city as more than a backdrop—almost another character itself. And I was fascinated to learn that Lillian was inspired by a real-life poet and advertising woman, Margaret Fishback!

Question #4

Would you ever take a walk similar to Lillian‘s? Would you strike up conversations with different people as Lillian did on your walk? Were you ever worried for Lillian‘s safety during her journey?

#BotmBuddyRead

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Honestly no... I wouldn‘t! I want to say I would, but I know me! I would be scared and leery of strangers especially at night! Maybe in 1984, but not in 2018!! 7mo
KnowledgeoverEveryThing I've never been one to strike up conversations on the street but people do it to me all the time. Everywhere I go someone stands next to me and start telling me their live story. 7mo
Mitch @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m with you on that..I‘d do the walk, and do walk the city every day...but talk to strangers...nope! 7mo
See All 17 Comments
KnowledgeoverEveryThing I was very terrified for Lillian because I knew New York streets was terrible back then! 7mo
Mitch I liked how at the end she reflects that not everyone talks to her, or talks back and she‘s had some close shaves...this made the first half of the book, where I was feeling a bit skeptic, much better! 7mo
Mitch @KnowledgeoverEveryThing I wanted to feel scared for her, but I‘m not sure the author built this in for us?? 7mo
EadieB I‘m guilty! I talk to strangers wherever I go during the day but it‘s usually in my borough. I don‘t think I would do it in a big city at night. I think Lillian is not one bit afraid and would be able to talk herself out of trouble. (edited) 7mo
TheBookHippie I would do this and I do every time I'm in the city. I don't ever worry about my safety really. I probably should 😂😳😱🏙🌇🌆🌃but back then the streets weren't really safe at dark so much unrest. 7mo
Andrew65 @EadieB She certainly did talk herself out of trouble at the end of the book! 7mo
KnowledgeoverEveryThing @Mitch I totally agree but I couldn't help it. I appreciated her confidence but I felt her down playing of everyone's advice on the dangers of walking at night was a bit much. 7mo
Andrew65 When I am walking it is quite a solitary experience. When I walk it is usually because I want to think, so am usually lost in my own head! Not very gregarious and usually a solitary person so no I wouldn‘t talk to people. Lillian reminds me of Frieda Klein who walks through London in the Frieda Klein books by Nicci French, but this isn‘t to talk to people in the main. (edited) 7mo
MrsV I pretty much live in the middle of no where, so walking is a pretty solitary event for me. But I don‘t live too far out of “city”. I don‘t have a problem talking to strangers and will when others start conversations, but for the most part I just want to go and get done what I need to do. 7mo
kspenmoll I did worry especially late at night at times. I walk alone in my neighborhood & I usually at least say hello to others if not converse. I go by the Village green that has an inviting gazebo, benches, & a Little Free Library. Right now it‘s dressed up for the holidays. 7mo
AmyG I found the coat situation as odd as can be. I‘d only walk in safe areas and not talk to anyone on said walks. If on line at a store or something sililar, I might strike up a conversation. (edited) 7mo
BarbaraJean I would love to walk the city like Lillian does, but I‘m not the type that strikes up all the conversations she does! I‘ve done a lot of traveling with a friend who does just that, though—makes things interesting for this introvert! I‘m happy to have someone else do the talking, but don‘t mind being along for the ride. I was worried for Lillian several times, esp. in the coat scene! I did feel like she had a little misplaced overconfidence there! (edited) 7mo
JaclynW I was scared for Lillian several times! That coat scene would have been quite terrifying. Lillian handled it well. @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @KnowledgeoverEveryThing @Mitch @EadieB @TheBookHippie @BarbaraJean @andrew65 @amyg @kspenmoll @MrsV I have walked alone several times in a big city. I love it. I stay to safer places. I have no problem chatting with people but I don't always seek it out, I like solitary time too. 7mo

I enjoyed this so much more than I thought I would. I came to it thinking it might be a bit too ‘sweet‘, but it wasn‘t! Based on the real life Margaret Fishback, Lillian really strives to live by her own rules. The magic of walking, walking to problem solve, walking to think, to connect with ideas and to to create space in the city was wonderfully explored. Social and class issues infuse the journey that Lillian takes across th city.

Read this as a Buddy Read on Litsy and enjoyed it very much. 85 year old Lillian Boxfish was the highest-paid advertising woman in the country. New Year's Eve 1984 and Lillian is on a 10 mile walk around the city meeting and talking with lots of people. She talks about things from the Jazz Age to the onset of the AIDS epidemic, the Great Depression to the birth of hip-hop. This is a witty and sad book at the same time that should not be missed!

Just finished this up and I‘m in love! Lillian reminds me so strongly of one of my grandmothers, and of the best parts of New York that I couldn‘t help but enjoy every minute of this novel. The vocabulary was exquisite here and the dialogue was so well done my mind assigned each character a distinct voice I could really hear as I read even though my copy of this was print, not audiobook.

Final thoughts or questions on this section?!?! Thanks everyone for joining us!!!

#BotmBuddyRead

Andrew65 I think I enjoyed this section more than the first as the author, and story, hit it‘s rhythm. But still not sure I understand why she fell in love with Max so quickly or so deeply! What a shame the effect of the war but still think the same would have happened. 7mo
Mitch I‘m liking the story, but I still have a bit of a problem with the writing... I can‘t hear any reminiscence...just current voices and that‘s a little strange. I also think Lillian‘s life perspective, voice, turn of phrase, doesn‘t change with age or experience which makes her seem a little flat. 7mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Andrew65 I agree with you! I was surprised at how fast she fell for him!! 7mo

Mitch I like her relationship with Max. I think she maybe the highest earning ad woman, she maybe pioneering for her time, but I like how the author has shown that falling in love isn‘t incompatible with that.... 7mo
EadieB I‘m enjoying the section better too and I like the current events and think Lillian is happier today than in the past. I find her past remembrances very sad. 7mo
IndoorDame @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Andrew65 me too! I wondered if we were supposed to believe that it was really that dizzying a love, or if it was meant more to show that she was growing up and wanting to conform to the rest of her social set a bit more? 7mo
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 yes I think it surprised her too. I wonder if no war if he would have been different ..but I don't think so either. You can be that madly in love and it not work. That's the part people forget. 7mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @andrew65 I think it was crazy love I just don't think it was compatible daily life type love to get both is a blessing many have but also some love fiercely but can't live together or live compatibly but don't have crazy love. 7mo
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Good points! 7mo
CoffeeNBooks The last part of this section, the last chapter especially, seemed to focus on everything that was falling apart in the city, and the devastating things that had already happened. I'm worried that it's foreshadowing bad things that are to come for Lillian. The tone really seemed to change quickly. 7mo
JaclynW @TheBookHippie Great points. 7mo
JaclynW @Andrew65 @TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @CoffeeNBooks @IndoorDame @EadieB @Mitch Is anyone else wanting to make a trip to NYC and make this same walk as Lillian?? I'm itching to go! 7mo
EadieB @JaclynW My husband retires 12-31 and we like to go to ny on Wednesday and go to the discount theatre ticket booth for 1/2 price tickets for a Wednesday matinee and we will be going sometime in January. 7mo
Mitch @EadieB have fun! 👍🏼 7mo
Mitch @JaclynW yep! My husband and I have significant birthdays in 2019 so we‘re celebrating by each choosing a trio...he‘s chosen a BBQ crawl in Austin, I‘ve chosen a Book crawl in NYC! 7mo
JaclynW @EadieB So fun!! Enjoy! 7mo
JaclynW @Mitch Awesome! Both of those sound amazing! Have a great time! 7mo
