Hi Littens 👋🏼 I‘ve missed you all.

I‘ve had a lot going on lately. After months of not being able to work due to severe eye problems, I‘m finally back in action with a new job (which I love) and much improved eyes.

I‘m in #WalnutCreek #California tonight for work, and taking advantage of the 80 degree weather and hotel balcony.

So happy to be back to normal (haha, well as much as possible). Bring on the books!

The Library Book | Susan Orlean

It‘s my birthday month and I‘m vowing to post at least once every day this entire month!

2/1/19 My first post is about The Library Book. Just picked up a copy at my fav local bookstore, Face In A Book.

Part true crime, part history, part mystery, I‘m told The Library Book is a love letter to public libraries and is the book that every book lover should read this year.

😍❤️😍❤️ LOVE THIS BOOK❤️😍❤️😍

This book - wow! Incredible characters and a smart, funny, yet heartbreaking story. What‘s not to love?? This author‘s writing reminds me of John Irving‘s earlier works, which makes sense considering he dedicated the book to Irving. I highly recommend this to literary fiction fans!

My #24in48 #readathon mug - first lines from famous literature ☕️

I‘ve had some serious eye problems lately, so most of my reading this weekend will be audiobooks, but that‘s okay. I wasn‘t going to let anything stop me from participating in my favorite Readathon!

Thankfully, my eyes are significantly better and my vision is almost back to normal. 🙏🏼

Current reads:

The Heart‘s Invisible Furies

#2019 reading goals

Well, my eyes are slowly getting better. All tests and MRI came back normal, so Dr.‘s think it‘s an extreme dry eye flare up caused by overexertion and dry weather/CA smoke. Dry eye is very common, but this severe of a flare up is rare.

Still on steroid drops and limiting computer and reading time. It will be a few more weeks until fully healed. Going forward, I need to use eyedrops daily and take lots of breaks. Crazy!

YouReadMyEyes Thanks everyone for your support through all of this! I had no idea that dry eyes could get this severe and cause partial vision loss, etc. I encourage everyone to use eye drops and take lots of breaks when reading or on the computer. (edited) 5mo
GingerAntics Oh you‘ve had a lot of smoke in the air lately, too. That can‘t be good for the eyes either. So glad it‘s nothing permanent or something that can‘t be treated. Hope all the eye drops help quickly. Life without reading would have been torture. So excited you‘re getting better. 💙💙💙 5mo
BookishMarginalia I‘m glad you have a diagnosis, treatment, and a great prognosis! 💜 5mo

Penny_LiteraryHoarders I've been going into the eye doctor lately too because of severe dry eye. Yeah - it's now daily drops and he told me to take fish oil tablets, so I've been doing that too. And hot compresses on the eyes when they get really sore. 👁️ Glad to hear all is getting better for you! 5mo

Well, my eyes are slowly getting worse, and I‘m supposed to limit reading and computer time as much as possible. So, I loaded up on audiobooks for now.

Have a follow up doctors appointment on Wednesday to go over bloodwork. Hopefully they can figure out the cause.

This may be my last post for a while because I need to rest my eyes as much as possible. Merry Christmas and happy holidays, thanks to everybody for your support and encouragement. 💛

Hi 💛 I‘m going through something and could use your advice & support. My right eye is very blurry and dry. It‘s not healing, despite using various eye drops, a humidifier, and omega 3 supplements. Yesterday, my eye doc put an amniotic membrane in to try and heal it. Unfortunately, now my left eye is headed for the same. Referred me for bloodwork and a brain MRI to hopefully determine why the increasing inflammation and dryness. ⬇️⬇️(see comment)

YouReadMyEyes I‘m trying to limit my computer and reading time for a few days. 😫 it‘s scary. Has anyone else gone through something similar? Advice/thoughts? (edited) 5mo
silentrequiem All the love. That sounds so hard! I couldn't read for a few weeks after eye surgery once. Lots of audiobooks. 5mo
julesG Hope you will feel better soon and be able to read properly again. Audiobooks is a good suggestion. I had something similar, yet different, happen to me. I had the feeling of something being in my eye (like a lash or piece of lint) for a few days, then my vision got cloudy and then vanished completely in that eye. MRI came back negative, bloodwork showed an inflammation, a spinal tap confirmed my suspicion - I have Multiple Sclerosis. BUT... 👇 5mo
See All 28 Comments
julesG That does not have to be the case in your case. There are a thousand different reasons for what you're going through. Chin up, it'll get better. As for the MRI, tell them to use the machine with as much power/Tesla as possible and go for really thin sections to find possible inflammation spots in the eyes or optical nerve. 5mo
Mimi28 I hope you feel better soon!! ❤️❤️ 5mo
Kaye Sorry you‘re going through this. ♥️. Medical issues are frightening. I think my best advice is that it‘s common to be afraid, and that this “waiting time” is the worst part, because it‘s the unknown. Once you get an answer , you‘ll know what the plan is and what to do about it. I have eye issues but the Dr says it‘s mainly due to old age . Stay strong, try to focus on audiobooks. They can get you through a lot of difficult times. 5mo
Literary_Siren So scary! I should probably bring up to my eye doctor that my vision sometimes has spots and I can barely see for an hour or so. I can usually fix it with some sugar consumption or a nap. But I don‘t have insurance so I‘m extremely hesitant to say anything. 5mo
MaureenMc 💗 5mo
GingerAntics That‘s sounds really scary. It might be a good time to rest and enjoy audiobooks, movies, etc. Anything you can just lay back and listen to. Music might be nice. Your eyes are having issues, so use you‘re ears. 5mo
Bklover Sending love your way!❤️❤️ 5mo
Redwritinghood Not as severe but I have similar problems with dry eye and nasal passages. Humidifier is a great idea, but I also have a moist heat mask for my eyes that helps a lot. You can get one on Amazon for about $25. I use the Bruder brand. (edited) 5mo
CarolynM Hope you get some answers soon. ❤️ 5mo
Ruthiella Hope you feel better soon! I agree with the advice to take it easy and use audio books only till you work it out. 🥺 5mo
irre Feel better 💕 5mo
Freespirit Our eyes are so precious. I‘m sure the MRI will give you some answers. It‘s not knowing that‘s the worst. 5mo
Literary_Siren @Beachesnbooks no headaches. I attribute it to low blood sugar as it usually disappears about 20-30 minutes after I eat some candy. 5mo
CouronneDhiver My best advice (after having gone through a diagnosis process this year, myself): Dr Google is not your friend. Be diligent with your doctors appointments and follow ups but don‘t let your mind go crazy. 5mo
Jas16 Sending love. Sorry you are going through this 5mo
Marilyncjackson Sending love and positivity your way. I have no idea what this is but I hope it gets better 5mo
YouReadMyEyes @silentrequiem 😌 thank you, and yes thank goodness for audiobooks! 5mo
YouReadMyEyes @julesG 😊 thank you for your support. wow that must have scary for you going through that! 5mo
YouReadMyEyes @Literary_Siren I agree, blood sugar sounds like the culprit. Take care and thank your for your support 💛 5mo
YouReadMyEyes @Redwritinghood that‘s a great idea, thank you! 🤗 5mo
YouReadMyEyes @CouronneDhiver you are so right! It‘s very hard not to google everything, especially when the doctors don‘t yet know what‘s wrong. I‘m hoping my bloodwork or mri will provide an answer. 5mo
GingerAntics I was so hoping your post was an update with good news. Good vibes are still heading your way. I agree with @CouronneDhiver about Dr. Google. I‘ve gotten myself so worked up from that. Don‘t go down the Google rabbit hole!!! 5mo

The Corrections | Jonathan Franzen

I‘ve never read Franzen. (embarrassing, yes 🙈)

I‘ve heard both referred to as the great modern American novel.

Which do you recommend I read first?

#thecorrections or #freedom ???

#helpmechose #whichfranzenfirst #literaryfiction

TheBookStacker I‘ve only read Freedom which I enjoyed. 6mo
zsuzsanna_reads I'm interested in the answer too, I haven't read them either! 6mo
CarolynM I bailed on The Corrections at the page 100 threshold. I just didn't care about the characters and wasn't interested in the story. 6mo

Bklover I bailed on Freedom. Haven‘t tried anything else 6mo
LauraJ Not embarrassing. I‘ve been less than impressed. 6mo
gradcat I read both, loved both...so I guess that makes these books #marmite! I‘m so proud of myself—I learned the marmite reference from Littens!! (edited) 6mo
Silvertongue I just read The Corrections last month but it was pretty painful to get through—nearly all the characters are exquisitely terrible people. Which I guess is the point of the book? Still working on the meaning of the book~ I thought about not finishing but it was a rec from a good friend. 6mo
JacqMac I hated The Corrections so much. I wish I had bailed. Don‘t be embarrassed. 6mo
Blaire I liked both, but I read the corrections ages ago (when it first came out 2001?). I‘d prob read it first. I don‘t mind unlikeable characters. 6mo
Creadnorthey Corrections is exquisite- no matter the difficult characters. I took this family drama with a loving dose of black humor. 5mo

My local bookstore recommended this. Sounds charming!

“A. J. Fikry‘s life is not at all what he expected it to be. He lives alone, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. But when a mysterious package appears at the bookstore, its unexpected arrival gives Fikry the chance to make his life over--and see everything anew.”

Book 2 of the Southern Reach Trilogy is SO different from Book 1. And not in a good way.

The writing style, the main character, the overly detailed descriptions 😫 ...it‘s dragging. I just want a continuation of Book 1 (which was fantastic) not a whole new character with an entirely new (and quite dull) backstory.

Littens who have read this series, please tell me it‘s worth it when I get to Book 3!

#sciencefiction #miniatureschnauzersoflitsy

TheBookAddict Sorry, I haven‘t read the book, but I love your doggy. My little Gigi looked just like that. I miss her so much. We lost her to uterine cancer 😔. What‘s your pup‘s name? 6mo
glitterkitty459 Cute puppy 😍🐶 I did read this whole series, and the second book is kinda slow, but for me towards the end it got a lot better. And the third is def better too 😊 6mo
Elma I felt the same way about this book. For me personally the ending wasn't worth it. I kept hoping the end would be so good that slogging through book 2 and 3 would be worth it, but it just wasn't. I know a lot of people loved them though. 6mo

I am loving this book! The story is about a young veterinarian school dropout‘s adventures and misfortunes while working for a traveling circus around the 1920‘s/30‘s.

Before starting this book, I really didn‘t know what it was about. Never saw the movie or even the film‘s previews. Kept avoiding this book, thinking it was some fluffy romance. Boy, was I wrong!

AmyG I loved this, too. 6mo

Annihilation | Jeff VanderMeer

I devoured Book 1 (Annihilation) of the Southern Reach trilogy. I couldn‘t put it down. It‘s a slow burn science fiction, more literary than commercial, so if you‘re looking for nonstop action, you should look elsewhere. The narration is very introspective at times; it‘s well written. I loved it. Starting the second book now.

Also watching the movie and (wow) it‘s very different from the book!

cariashley Oh yes.. the end scenes of the movie really had me scratching my head 🤔 6mo

No more thinking, maybe I‘ll write someday. No more telling myself, I can‘t do this. No more worrying about whether or not I will fail.

No, I‘m not quitting my day job. And it‘s possible that no one will ever read what I write. But I don‘t care. I want to feel creative again. I want to have fun with words.

And, I want to know, do you write? What about? For business or pleasure (or both)? Do you set a quota? Do you journal? Tell all 😋

Readergrrl I‘m like you. I really want to write but haven‘t started. I‘ve always wanted to participate in the NaNoWriMo but I‘m too...scared, lazy, busy??? I know this doesn‘t answer your question, but I‘d like to see what other people say to your post. BTW, I LOVED King‘s On Writing! 7mo

LiteraryinLititz Go, you! It‘s exciting that you are going to write! 7mo
wanderinglynn I write for work and finally got up the nerve to submit a professional piece and it‘s going to be published next month! I also write for fun. I do NaNoWriMo every year & I love it. Some years I hit 50k, some years I don‘t And that‘s okay because sometimes life happens. I‘ve never done anything with what I write. But I feel that the creative writing helps me in my day-job non-creative writing. 7mo
LoLo_and_The_Dude Good for you!!! Yay!! 7mo
mcipher So awesome! I say this to myself periodically but usually I don‘t do much writing. I have a concept for NaNoWriMo this year and I‘m determined to try again and get back into the the habit (years ago I wrote all the time). I hope you get started and feel great about it!! 7mo
TheDaysGoBy I write for pleasure and have been at fanfiction for over 10 years 😂 This year has been rough and I‘ve fallen out of my routine but I‘m looking to get back into it. I always keep a notebook/journal on me for ideas or to write a scene snippet should it strike me 7mo
Valeka Yayyyyy you!!!! So happy that you‘ve decided to write. 📝 I ghostwrite for a few websites and am a contributing writer to some political journals. My passion is writing literary fiction. I‘ve completed drafts for 3 novels but they‘re currently in my desk drawer because...I‘m a big chicken! 7mo
jmofo YAY!!! 7mo
RainyDayReading I write. Mostly fantasy though I‘ve got a murder mystery percolating in my head. As much as I‘d love to be an author someday, I‘m trying to be content with the fact that no one will probably ever read what I write haha. So I write purely for my own enjoyment (: I fell out of it for about a year but I‘m hoping to get back to it starting Nov. 1st with NanoWrimo. 7mo

“What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . . ?
Andrea knows everything about her mother, Laura. She knows she‘s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle; she knows she‘s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she‘s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don‘t we?”

😁 this book makes me happy. just watched the trailer for the new film On the Basis of Gender!

#equality #womensrights #rbg #justice #biography

Jess7 Love RBG and I loved that book! 10mo
Skeebies05 What was your take on the casting from the trailer? 10mo
YouReadMyEyes @Skeebies05 I don‘t really know much about Felicity Jones (I‘m not a Star Wars person). What do you think? 10mo
Skeebies05 I think she‘s a good actress but that attempted accent was not great. I wonder if it will turn me off of the whole movie. . . 10mo

My dogs LOVE the #24in48 #ReadAThon because they get extra snuggle time while I read all morning 😊

I‘m at 7 hours. Hope I can get another 7 at least before it‘s through. I had an event yesterday and have to get some work in later today, so I‘m trying to sneak in as much reading as I can! Does reading for work count? Lol, I‘m thinking no...

Stayed up to finish this one! Didn‘t love it as much as Beartown, but it was still good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Outlander | Diana Gabaldon
post image

I‘m re-reading this book because it‘s been 10 years, and I want to read the other books in the series (the TV show rekindled my interest).

Listening to the audiobook, I‘ve developed a slight accent in my head now when thinking my thoughts. I‘m now thinking with a wee Scottish accent, LOL 😆 Has anyone else had this happen with an audiobook where the narrator has an accent?

#onlyonlitsy #audiobookloversgetit #getoutofmyhead #outlander

JamieArc Oh yes! All the time! 10mo
LauraBrook Most of the 📺 I watch is British, so my regular inside voice has an accent! This morning it‘s a little more Welsh, as I‘ve been watching Hinterland this weekend. 10mo
Susanita Yes with Tana French. 🇮🇪 10mo

Jennifer3 Yes definitely! 10mo
Maewyn As a kid when people couldn't understand my accent I would subconsciously try to sound like them. This still happens from time to time so listening to an audio book definitely does that because it is like a long one sided conversation to my brain. 😊 10mo
tracey38 Yes, even happens in person. I have a southern accent but used to spend my summers growing up with my cousins in PA, who have a very distinct PA Dutch accent. I would come home after the summer speaking with their accent for a week or so. 😁 10mo

Looking for book recommendations!

Planning a trip to Scotland and would love to read and learn more about this amazing county. I know and love Outlander, but what else??? Fiction or non-fiction welcome!

Also, have you been there? What should we be sure not to miss?

#scotland #recommendsday #suggestions #scottish

MrBook @LornaDH lives there! She may have some tips for you 😁. She's an aMAZing Litten 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! 11mo
HeatherBookNerd Here‘s a recent Book Riot post about Scotland that may be of interest. https://bookriot.com/2018/06/17/literary-tourism-scotland/ 11mo
GingerAntics Weird Scotland is always fun. If you‘re a huge fan of Outlander, I‘d stay away from history books (they‘ll ruin it for you). How the Scots Invented the Modern World is also a fun read. That‘s pretty Outlander safe. Then there is always Scotland‘s Bard if you‘re a fan of poetry. I‘m trying to remember the names of the books with the mythology in it. Those are a lot of fun, too. 11mo

CarolynM For a light-hearted adventure/romance 11mo
andrew61 There is loads of brilliant crime fiction from Scotland but that may be a bit grim if you are on holiday. If you've read ian banks his novels are interesting and his travel book around the whisky distilleries is really good 11mo
Ardachy I lived in Scotland for over four years and still hadn‘t seen everything I wanted to. I agree with @GingerAntics and @andrew61 . The Alexander McCall Smith Scotland Street series would make a great Scottish holiday read or any Christopher Brookmyre if you like dark humour. 11mo
rabbitprincess I second the recs for Mr Mac and Me and for Chris Brookmyre. I particularly like Brookmyre's Jasmine Sharp trilogy, which begins with 11mo
GingerAntics I would actually stay away from the tagged book. It‘s a really great, really short, concise history with all the necessities, but on one page alone about half of Outlander will be proven impossible, so I wouldn‘t go there. It‘s a great little book, but probably not a good idea for your purposes. 11mo
minkyb Inspector John Rebus is a great series. 11mo
YouReadMyEyes @HeatherBookNerd This Book Riot post is awesome, thank you so much! 11mo
YouReadMyEyes @GingerAntics @CouronneDhiver @CarolynM @andrew61 @Ardachy @rabbitprincess @minkyb Thank you all so much for your recommendations 😊 I‘m so excited to look these up and see if I can find at the used bookstore or online. I really like Outlander, but have only read the first book (and watched Season 1). I enjoy the cultural history more than the political. 11mo
YouReadMyEyes @MrBook Thanks 😁 I love how Litsy connects us all from far and wide 11mo

Up early for some quiet reading and snuggle time with my babies. 🐶🐶

The first weekend I‘ve not had to work since I started my new job in early April!

@GarthRanzz hey reading buddy 👋🏼😁 Did you catch me? I‘m on page 659. Moving slowly, but loving this book. Why has no one made this into a TV series like Game of Thrones?!?
