From neuroscientist and New York Times bestselling author of Still Alice comes a powerful and heartbreaking exploration of regret, forgiveness, freedom, and what it means to be alive. An accomplished concert pianist, Richard received standing ovations from audiences all over the world in awe of his rare combination of emotional resonance and flawless technique. Every finger of his hands was a finely calibrated instrument, dancing across the keys and striking each note with exacting precision. That was eight months ago. Richard now has ALS, and his entire right arm is paralyzed. His fingers are impotent, still, devoid of possibility. The loss of his hand feels like a death, a loss of true love, a divorce—his divorce. He knows his left arm will go next. Three years ago, Karina removed their framed wedding picture from the living room wall and hung a mirror there instead. But she still hasn’t moved on. Karina is paralyzed by excuses and fear, stuck in an unfulfilling life as a piano teacher, afraid to pursue the path she abandoned as a young woman, blaming Richard and their failed marriage for all of it. When Richard becomes increasingly paralyzed and is no longer able to live on his own, Karina becomes his reluctant caretaker. As Richard’s muscles, voice, and breath fade, both he and Karina try to reconcile their past before it’s too late. As poignant and powerful as Jojo Moyes’s Me Before You, Every Note Played is a masterful exploration of redemption and what it means to find peace inside of forgiveness.

A heartbreaking, no-apologies story about ALS. This is my first Genova book and It feels honest and true. I liked that it taught much about the debilitating disease, and at the same time focused on its effect on the relationship of the characters. Highly recommended!

And I will read more of her books, just not right away 😅

Took this pic in the dark at 2:00am. Sitting here with tears dripping everywhere. I read this for #Booked2019 for the Features a Musician category. This book is about a man with ALS and is as brutal and as sad as you would expect. Still, most definitely worth the read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Heartbreakingly real. Eye opening. Fiction but yet could be non-fiction... helps you realize the helpless terror of losing your life to a disease that comes out of nowhere. Like walking into a glass door when you fully expected to continue taking a step into the sunshine lit outdoors.

Heartbreaking. Incredibly insightful portrayal of ALS and its devastating consequences. A beautiful depiction of lives torn apart by decisions and lives healed through repentance. I was completely trapped in ALS‘s grip through Lisa Genova‘s carefully crafted words and descriptions. #lisagenova@lisagenova

I was going to save my #spring choices for #booked2019 till, well, spring. But as we are having balmy days and the flowers and birds seem to think spring has arrived I‘ve gone for it. (Still, 16 Feb is ridiculously early for spring in northern England. I predict the cold returning, blasting all the flowers and confusing all the egg-sitting birds.)

Richard is a concert pianist who has spent his life following his passion while neglecting his family. Karina gave up her own career to support Richard and raise their daughter. One day, Richard feels a tingle in one finger. Soon, he‘s lost control of his hand and received a diagnosis: ALS. Karina becomes his reluctant caretaker.

A moving portrayal of a couple and the brutal disease that forces them to finally forgive themselves and each other.

I don‘t cry at books, only movies. I teared up at the 2nd to last chapter & sobbed at the last one. It‘s possible that this was triggered by the fact that I had Chopin‘s Nocturne in E flat Major (which is mentioned in the last chapter) playing at the same time, as I am a 🎶 lover. This book was an emotional read that I truly enjoyed. I highly recommend it, & having your streaming music service ready to listen to the music mentioned as you read.

Just finished for book club . Mixed feelings. Loved the acknowledgments. I got a lot out of reading these.
A first for me, trying to have empathy for a character I didn‘t particularly like.
I‘ve just been to see the movie The Children‘s Act with Emma Thompson. I could see her playing the lead female role if this book ever made into a movie.Certainly educated me about motor neurone disease . So sad.

CarolynM Great review. I only read Still Alice because it was a book group choice, but I liked it a lot. Haven't got around to this one yet. 7mo

Ok, so this was good but not great IMO. I love the way Genova uses quality fiction to teach us about real conditions, but I don‘t think she nailed it here.
Her novel Still Alice was incredibly good & taught me a lot about dementia. I related to and felt for the well developed characters.
In Every Note Played the characters were not as well drawn. A worthwhile read though & I‘m glad to have learnt some more about the devastation of MND/ALS.

JennyM Great review...I completely agree. 7mo

My #currentread for book club.

When you know the book is about ALS (or MND as we call it in Australia) you know it‘s not likely to be an uplifting read 😢. And of course with Genova‘s amazing research skills, ability to write and her background in neuroscience you know it‘s gonna be a well put together book. But oh my it‘s depressing. Must. Read. On.

Man alive, this one tugs at the heart strings! Lisa is just as gifted at making the progression of ALS tangible in this book as she was with dementia in Still Alice. My grandfather passed from this brutal disease so it was extra meaningful to me. I cried on the train over the ending, truly not caring who saw me.

As a researcher in the molecular biology of ALS, this topic is very close to my heart. Lisa does such an amazing job of painting the picture of Richard. Even though the book is about a guy with ALS, Richard is SO much more than that. He is richly developed and flawed, like a real person. This story is real in a way that a lot of fiction is not and I absolute love it. I cried at the end, but that was to be expected. Amazing job.

One of the most beautifully written, emotion-filled, painfully realistic incredible books I've ever read! As a long-term caregiver for a terminally ill spouse, I can attest to the fact that the writing from the caregiver standpoint is spot-on! And although my husband did not have ALS, (he had a blood cancer), the author certainly seems to have captured that character perfectly as well! Beautiful, realistic, raw honesty, just incredible!!!

ALS is an ugly, quick moving disease with no mercy. It‘s been depicted before- in You‘re Not You, a book I never read, but I saw the film. Similarly, both stories track the progress of ALS in accomplished pianists, a fate even crueler than ALS itself. Even if you‘ve never read either book or seen the movie, think Me Before You or even, Still Alice, another harrowing depiction of disease, penned by Genova. In short, have your tissues ready.

Wow. The destructive nature of a degenerative disease means the ending was inevitable, but it didn‘t break my heart any less. 😭

Richard is a renowned classical pianist, his ex, Karina, is a piano teacher. Their complex relationship with music & each other takes center stage as Karina takes Richard in, caring for him despite previous betrayal & his pride. ALS quickly ravages his body/skills— he has to come to terms with his past & lack of future.
