Lone Women: A Novel | Victor LaValle

A literary western mashed with horror and historical fiction.! Yup, it‘s bonkers but it works so well.
Creepy, atmospheric and a glimpse of the old west. Enjoyed the audio narration.

squirrelbrain I can‘t get hold of this here yet…🤷‍♀️ 3d
TrishB There are so many words that shouldn‘t be together there! 3d
Cinfhen EXACTLY @TrishB 🤣🤣it‘s more like #HorrorLite but I think you‘d like it! Hopefully it‘ll turn up on #Scribd @squirrelbrain 3d

Megabooks I‘m going to check the library. I think they got it. 3d
Megabooks Lol I put it on hold on April 13! 🤣🤣 it‘s the library with long lines so there are still 6 people in front of me. 3d
Cinfhen It‘s ok to wait @Megabooks plus I think it‘s not being discussed until August for the official #TOBsummercamp23 3d
BarbaraBB Thanks for tagging me. I am glad it‘s chosen voor CampToB 3d

Annie John: A Novel | Jamaica Kincaid

#TitlesAndTunes #ReadingTheAmericas23 #Antigua This book was phenomenal 🙌🏻♥️My first time reading Jamaica Kincaid, I completely understand why she‘s an iconic Caribbean author. Her prose are lyrical and melodic, every word like an island breeze warm and rhythmic. A semi autobiographical coming of age story told in snapshots over the course of several years. The theme often repeated is the intense love/hate relationship between mother & daughter.

squirrelbrain Sounds wonderful! I‘m going to get a Kincaid book from the library for this prompt. 4w
Cinfhen Is audio available on #Scribd @squirrelbrain ??? Because Robin Miles did an outstanding job of narrating 4w

squirrelbrain There‘s only one book on Scribd (audio or print) and it appears to be set in New England. 🤷‍♀️ Although I suppose I could go with ‘author from…‘ rather than ‘book set in…‘ 4w
BarbaraBB What a fab review! It is one of the #1001books that I really want to read now! 4w
Cinfhen It was super short @BarbaraBB but it left a HUGE impression- I will 💯 read more from Kincaid 4w
Cinfhen Hmmmm , can‘t say I‘m at all familiar with that book @squirrelbrain 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4w

My Prizes: An Accounting | Thomas Bernhard

Here‘s my (not quite short enough!) shortlist for the #womensprize. The list is in approximate order best to worst, but I just can‘t decide on 2 out of 3 for the final 2 places. Each time I figure it out, I don‘t want to lose the other one!

Pod was so awful I‘m booting it off the list completely. I also wouldn‘t mind if the Pin or Patel made it on to the list.

The actual list will be the complete opposite of course! (And Pod will win!) 🤣

rmaclean4 Of your top books, I have not read Black Butterflies or Fire Rush. I am waiting to read more once the short list comes out. Looks like I should read Black Butterflies even if it does not make the cut! 1mo
LeahBergen I like the “boot” 😆😆 1mo
JillR I‘ve not read any yet, and am thinking now I might just pick the ones you liked the best 😆 1mo
See All 37 Comments
Cazxxx I‘m not interested in reading Pod, I‘ve not heard anything good about it! I think my favourite will be the bandit queens but haven‘t managed to read them all as my online library don‘t have many of them 1mo
JillR Forgot I‘m halfway through Trespasses though! 1mo
Oryx Love the shoe 😂 1mo
youneverarrived Lol at booting it off the list 😂 1mo
MicheleinPhilly 😂😂😂 1mo
Chelsea.Poole I‘m excited for Bandit Queens! And I have Memphis currently checked out, so hoping to get to that asap. Great work with all these! 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures Thanks for the tag!! I love this prize. Totally agree with you on Pod. I DNF'd it, so far the only book yet. I have 7 left to read and this shortlist date is coming quickly! 1mo
Cinfhen Oh wow!!! That‘s awesome!! There are still several books I can‘t get including butterflies and 1mo
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 love the boot 🥾 I have POD on loan from hoopla so that might be next even though you clearly aren‘t a fan 😉I‘ve read 9 and bailed on Tresspasses and Glory (both on audio) if they make it to shortlist I might try to borrow in Print. Right now my top contenders are DC, BQ, MP, WS, CoP 1mo
jlhammar Love it! 😂 I‘m kind of dreading Pod. I‘m going to let myself DNF if it isn‘t working for me. I think The Marriage Portrait, Trespasses, Black Butterflies and Bandit Queens (currently IP) all have a very good chance of making my shortlist. 1mo
thewallflower0707 I think The Marriage Portrait will definitely be on the shortlist, though I‘m not sure if she will win, considering she just won the prize with Hamnet. 1mo
squirrelbrain Some people must like Pod @Cazxxx @Cinfhen @jlhammar - after all, it made the long list. (Just not me, or @ChaoticMissAdventures ! 🤣) 1mo
Leniverse I'm with you on Pod. 😕 I still have way too many left to read before I can build a shortlist. Better get to it! 😃 1mo
squirrelbrain @thewallflower0707 - I did wonder about The Marriage Portrait being on the list. It is so good but I think less well-known authors should be given more of a chance. I feel the same about Demon. 1mo
squirrelbrain @JillR - we do have very similar taste in books so….!😁 1mo
squirrelbrain Fire Rush is still expensive over here @Cinfhen so I can see how it‘s not available elsewhere. (I read an ARC). BB is out in paperback next week, so if either makes the shortlist I can always get copies here and send them to you. 1mo
squirrelbrain @Chelsea.Poole - I think you‘ll like both of those! 1mo
charl08 I just love this discussion. 😍 And not just because my top books are almost the same (despite still have several still to read). 😂 1mo
Hooked_on_books Thanks for the tag! And yeah, Pod will totally win. 😂 I have no intention of reading either it or Glory, but I‘d like to try to read the rest eventually. I think I have 6 to go. Can‘t wait to see how close you are to their short list! 1mo
TheKidUpstairs Of what I've read so far, Trespasses and Marriage Portrait are my favourites. I just started DC yesterday and am loving it so far, and Bandit Queens is next up for me. I haven't disliked anything I've read, but Dog of the North and Stone Blind didn't strike me as prize-worthy. I could see Homesick on the short list because of the way it plays with genre and style, it's the kind of quirky pick that tends to get that recognition. 1mo
TheKidUpstairs The other one I've finished is Memphis. I'd be happy to see it on the shortlist, but not surprised if it didn't make the cut. 1mo
JenniferP I‘ve only read the Marriage Portrait, Demon Copperhead, and Trespasses. I own Stone blind and am hoping to get to it this month. I would put Trespasses at the top, personally. 1mo
Cinfhen Thanks so much, Helen!!! Fire Rush is available on Tuesday through Audible so I think I‘ll use a credit and I‘m hoping black butterflies will be available on #Scribd in the coming weeks 1mo
batsy Love the "boot" ? 1mo
squirrelbrain I‘ll be nowhere near I‘m sure! @Hooked_on_books 1mo
squirrelbrain @TheKidUpstairs - I agree re Dog and Stone Blind - they just weren‘t ‘different‘ enough. I think I read the ‘abridged‘ version of Homesick as that also didn‘t strike me as anything other than a (fictional?) memoir. 1mo
squirrelbrain @charl08 - I think there‘s a few books that *everyone* seems to like best. 1mo
Cathythoughts Thanks for the tag Helen X I‘m screenshot taken. Pod got the boot 🤣 I love it. 1mo
TrishB Of your top 7 I‘ve loved 5 😁 just finished Bandit Queens and didn‘t like as much as Trespasses or Memphis. But 5/7 is very similar! I‘m not bothering with any you don‘t like- esp. Pod 😁 1mo
squirrelbrain I think you‘d really like Fire Rush @TrishB 1mo
BarbaraBB Love the boot 🤣 and am intrigued by your shortlist! 1mo
Megabooks Pod was on the new releases at the library when I dashed In Friday and I almost picked it up, and then I thought…wait someone I really trust hated this…I could remember that but not who. Glad I dodged the bullet!! 1mo
squirrelbrain You might have liked it @megabooks, although somehow I think not. 😬 1mo

Need an in-between book before #BookSpin for April is picked. Just looked to see if this was on #Scribd and it is. Has anyone read it before? What did u think? I don't think I've read a time travel book. Also I don't know if I will be able to finish this before the 2nd of April. It's like 13ish hours. *Weekends are family time*

Klou This cover 😍😍😍 2mo

TrishB Brilliant 👍🏻 2mo
ravenlee Hooray! I‘m at the point where my choices have to be more carefully chosen now, instead of relying on coincidence. Think I‘ve read 30/52. 2mo
AshleyHoss820 Excellent reading so far! It‘s so nice that it‘s been good reading overall, too! 🎉🎉🎉 2mo
Cinfhen I love these challenges as it helps dictate my reading and introduced me to several new authors @AshleyHoss820 @ravenlee @TrishB @Suet624 @Librarybelle @LeeRHarry 2mo
Deblovestoread Wow! I‘m at 21. Some of my planning includes doubling up with #Booked throughput the year. 2mo
Cinfhen I tried to #DoubleDip @Deblovestoread or even sneak in a #TriplePlay or #GrandSlam as often as possible 😉 it‘s part of the fun 😂 2mo
BarbaraBB You‘re almost done already! Some great reads there! 2mo
squirrelbrain Wow, you‘ve read loads! ❤️ 2mo
Bluebird Amazing progress! You‘ll be done soon! I‘m at 21 now, but i‘ve read most of the easy prompts so it will be tougher going forward 2mo
LaraReads This is so fantastic! Wowzers! 2mo
Cinfhen Other than #octaviabutler and #ABookEveryoneHasRead im in pretty good shape with the remaining prompts @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Bluebird @LaraReads there are definitely a few trickier prompts but luckily I was able to borrow from online sources like #Scribd and #Libby 😁 2mo
BarbaraBB There will be few books everyone has read but you 😛 2mo
Cinfhen I might have to try again with Harry Potter @BarbaraBB ⚡️👓🧹 2mo

“Perhaps one day… there will be a safer time, when women could walk the Earth, shining bright with power, and yet live.”

I adored this witchy tale about the strength women can possess within when they allow themselves to find it. It weaves 3 stories over 4 centuries, and I loved the way it all came together, especially in the second half of the book.

LeeRHarry Yes! I loved this one! Picked up the US copy whilst I was over there on holiday 😊 it‘s gorgeous! 2mo
LaraReads @LeeRHarry yes! So gorgeous! And it rarely happens that the US covers are better than the UK ones, but this one wins! 2mo
Cinfhen I‘m so put off on witchy tales since reading When women could Fly but this book sounds & looks great!!!! I might have to #BorrowNotBuy (edited) 2mo
Cinfhen LOVE your photo ♥️Hope you‘re feeling better!!! 2mo
squirrelbrain @cinfhen - I read the two books almost at the same time, and this one is NOTHING like The Women Could Fly. (ie it‘s fabulous!) 🤣 2mo
Cinfhen Ha 🤭 @squirrelbrain 🙌🏻✨Hopefully I‘ll borrow it next month on #Scribd 2mo

I can appreciate the writing in this book, from the #womensprize long list, but the subject matter was all just a bit..well..grubby for me. The MC starts work at an indie cinema that soon gets bought by a multiplex and the behaviour of her workmates matches the filthy carpets, the overflowing toilets, and the recycled popcorn of the cinema. Be prepared for lots of bodily functions, sex and death. A light pick only.

#52books23 #setinaworkplace

jlhammar Thanks for the heads-up! Good to be prepared. I'll be interested to see how I get on with this. Those things can definitely be turn-offs for me. 2mo
Cinfhen I liked this one, audio was EXCELLENT but it‘s definitely NOT for everyone- it‘s very graphic in detailing bodily functions @jlhammar 2mo

Cinfhen Cute graphics, Helen and wonderful review!!!!! 2mo
sarahbarnes Great review! I just looked for this one at my library this morning because the description intrigued me, but it‘s not out in the US yet I don‘t think. 2mo
TrishB Thanks for warning 😁 2mo
Cinfhen @sarahbarnes I was able to borrow through #Scribd if you have a subscription 😁and I think Scribd offers free trials too!! 2mo
squirrelbrain I borrowed it on #Scribd too @sarahbarnes although I couldn‘t get the audio on there, unlike @Cinfhen 2mo
squirrelbrain It‘s quite short @jlhammar but full of the graphic elements. I‘d still give it a go though, but maybe only if you can get it for ‘free‘. 2mo
Librarybelle Great review! 2mo
sarahbarnes Thank you @Cinfhen and @squirrelbrain! I don‘t have a subscription but maybe I‘ll do the free trial. 😁 2mo
Megabooks I can‘t do bodily functions in fiction. Pass. 2mo
Ruthiella I dunno. I think Manhunt was about my limit for this year in terms of grubbiness! 😂 2mo
batsy Nice review. It's good to know what to be prepared for! 2mo
rmaclean4 I will read it if it makes the short list! 2mo

#ToB23 #shortlisted This was an interesting study of a family dealing/living with grief/loss.
It‘s short on action but long on character study. While this book was good, I‘m not sure why it made the shortlist🤷🏼‍♀️
This was my last book from the shortlist - looking forward to discussing with the tournament crew.

Cinfhen @Deblovestoread @BookBelle84 not sure if you received the first tag….xx 4mo
Ruthiella I really liked this after I got used to the format/style. It‘s definitely something I normally would not read were it not for the TOB. 4mo
Chelsea.Poole I just checked this out from the library. I‘ll get it in a few days. Based on reviews I think this one will work for me because I‘m good with character studies 😊 4mo
Librarybelle I‘ve seen lots of mixed reviews about this one. I‘m on the fence about it… #somanybookssolittletime 4mo
squirrelbrain I‘m still wavering about this one. It‘s expensive over here and isn‘t yet available on any ‘free‘ apps. 🤷‍♀️ 4mo
Cinfhen This was a borrow from #Scribd @squirrelbrain and I‘m glad..,it‘s not a book I‘d re-read @Librarybelle @Chelsea.Poole but it had some merit, I just didn‘t love it. 4mo
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 4mo
sarahbarnes I actually just returned this to the library yesterday without reading it…I just wasn‘t feeling it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo
Cinfhen It‘s a slow burn @sarahbarnes - maybe you‘ll try again before the tournament begins 4mo
Cinfhen Thanks,Sarah 😁I‘ve manage to read both my #BookSpin & #DoubleSpin for February @TheAromaofBooks 🙌🏻💗 4mo
BarbaraBB So good you‘ve read them all! I just started Mercury but find it sooo boring. And I have Seven Moons still calling out. Not sure if I‘m going to give in 😉 4mo
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Sorry, y‘all - challenges are just not for me. 😚😚 4mo
Cinfhen I bailed on both Mercury & Seven Moons @BarbaraBB AND The passenger and (edited) 4mo
Cinfhen So I REALLY haven‘t read them all 🙈 4mo
Cinfhen At least you considered it @britt_brooke but better to know your limitations 😍 4mo
TheAromaofBooks Nice!!! Only a week into the month, too!!! 4mo
Cinfhen I‘m pretty impressed with myself @TheAromaofBooks I‘m not gonna lie 😜😂😂 4mo
Hooked_on_books Hey, nice job on completing! I have 2 left, so I‘m in good shape. 4mo
BkClubCare @Ruthiella 👍 Always a top reason I follow the TOB 4mo
BkClubCare @Cinfhen 👏 My TOB philosophy is IF I had it in my hands and read some of it (and then read a million contrarion reviews 🤣) I am likely to count it! 4mo
Cinfhen Which two @Hooked_on_books ??? 4mo
Hooked_on_books Olga and Goose 4mo
Cinfhen I think you‘ll enjoy both @Hooked_on_books ♥️🤞🏼 4mo
