After reading Hogan's other books this one was a bit of disappointment. Honestly, it would have much better without the Alice and Mattie component because Masha and her friends were perfectly intriguing and entertaining on their own. I also enjoyed the lessons on Victorian cemeteries and death customs πŸͺ¦βš°οΈ

Never watched the Netflix series, but when I came across the book in Goodwill I figured 'Why not?'

The biggest impression it made on me was to wonder if Teresa Guidice's book was similar bc they both served in Danbury, or if there was a little ....um, "borrowing" happening.

UwannaPublishme I enjoy books about the Mafia too. I remember reading a good one about β€œVinny the Chin.” (These nicknames are a hoot!) And of course, who didn‘t love watching Mob Wives! 😁 2w
TheBookgeekFrau @UwannaPublishme Yes! If I remember correctly - he tried to get out his trial with an insanity plea by wondering around the streets in pajamas and a bathrobe (if I'm remembering the news stories correctly). Just finished and it was painfully boring. However, because of the subject of eternal life and the ending it will stick with me. Overall, it was a little too A Pilgrim at Tinker Creek for me.

LibrarianRyan Have you see the movie? I liked the book as a kid but as an adult I agree with you. But I did like the movie. 3w
TheBookgeekFrau @LibrarianRyan I didn't even know there was a movie, but should I ever come across it I'll watch it. As I was reading, I kept picturing my 6th English teacher and wishing we'd read this. I still don't think I would've liked it, but the class discussions would've been fun. 3w
LibrarianRyan @TheBookgeekFrau The movie was maybe not made for TV but not a big budget either. It has Alexis Bledell either right before Gilmore Girls or early in her run in that series. 3w

dabbe I love when books popped up from my (ahem) younger days! MHC was THE female writer of mysteries; I kind of likened her to Sidney Sheldon. We couldn't WAIT for the next book to come out. And wait we had to do--in the good ol' days! I might have to revisit her! #thanksforthememory πŸ’• 4w
TheBookgeekFrau @dabbe MHC was the bomb digitty for my mother, along with Sidney Sheldon. I couldn't wait to be old enough to read them. So right after I snuck Flowers in the Attic, I read Where Are The Children, moved on to Sidney and never looked back. It's funny, when I was taking the picture I thought the same about a MHC revisit! #thanksforsharingmymemories πŸ’• 4w

At first I was bummed because the first half of the book is just a history of the move west BASED on some of the women's diaries. However, once I started reading I was just captivated. It's actually quite amazing that anyone made it West!

I thought the trek from NY to CO in a U-Haul towing a car with 2 cats during a pandemic was hard enough, but if we had to take everything apart to cross a river by raft...Yeah, I'd still be in NY 🀣
