Water for Elephants
Water for Elephants: A Novel | Sara Gruen
When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, swindlers and misfits in a second-rate circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression.A veterinary student who almost earned his degree, Jacob is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that Jacob meets Marlena, the beautiful equestrienne who is married to August, a charismatic but violently unpredictable animal trainer. Jacob also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems unmanageable until he discovers an unusual way to reach her.Water for Elephants is a story that has it all - warmth, humour, poignancy and passion. It has an energy and spirit like the feeling under a big top when the show is about to begin. It is a novel that will win your heart.

This is my IRL book club‘s choice for June... and one of the few times that I‘ve actually seen the movie before reading the book! The circus life is certainly no #Paradise- though I like the #FlashbackFun format of Jacob‘s story. But the violence against animals and people puts this one in the #MadeYouCry category for sure! #StarTrekSummerJune #JazzyJune #30JuneBooks

Megabooks I had to give up because of the violence against animals! 5d
TorieStorieS @Megabooks I completely understand! I‘m not sure if I would have finished had this not been a book club read! 5d

This has been on my to-read list for a long time and I finally got around to reading it. I‘m glad I did if only to get the book off the list. It was okay. It didn‘t live up to the hype for me though. Is this blasphemous in the literary world? I did like the younger Jacob‘s storyline but the older Jacob storyline was a distraction and didn‘t add to story.

Is it bad that I'm 28 and sometimes this happens to me already? 🤷‍♀️

JanuarieTimewalker13 It‘s funny, 29 bothered me more than 30. I started seeing faint lines around my lips and I freaked out. I don‘t even smoke!! Problem is I‘ve always been a big kisser. Lol. I was ok until 40...that was the next low key freak out. By 50 I was more amazed that I had lived so long...so, it never really ends until it ends. Enjoy your youth!!! I am loving this book! The story is about a young veterinarian school dropout‘s adventures and misfortunes while working for a traveling circus around the 1920‘s/30‘s.

Before starting this book, I really didn‘t know what it was about. Never saw the movie or even the film‘s previews. Kept avoiding this book, thinking it was some fluffy romance. Boy, was I wrong!

I found it hard to get into this at first but was really invested in the story and characters by the end. I was especially impressed by the nursing home perspective as that's a side of everyday life that is seldom explored. I have never been a fan of circuses and after having read this book I am even less inclined to support them, although one would hope that working conditions would be safer today.

The two narrators of this audiobook make this listen worthwhile, especially David Ledoux, the young adult version of the protagonist. The 93 year old version of the protagonist has a reflective and smaller role, those his audio performance is good as well. Water for Elephants is mostly a romance novel that revolves around a traveling circus during the prohibition era. It‘s pretty good, though nothing extraordinary. Overall rating: 3.93 stars.

DrexEdit I felt almost exactly the same way about this book. ☺️ 9mo

Water for Elephants was a book club pick that I did NOT want to read. I thought it was too "chick lit" and sad for me. But, since I was the one that started the book club, and they read all my suggestions, I read it. I'm so happy I did. I adore this book and recommend it all the time. This happened a few more times with this same book club - Big Little Lies, The Thirteenth Tale, and Ready Player One. All great. @TheReadingMermaid

Thank you @Rachel.Rencher for your #7DaysGiveaway!

I can‘t remember what book first got me to become a reader. I don‘t remember a time when I didn‘t devour every book I came across. However, one of the first books I remember my mother reading to me was SCAMP, the story of one of Lady and the Tramp‘s puppies. #7DaysGiveaway @Rachel.Rencher
I have always loved reading since I was a little kid, but the first one that made me the reader I am now was Stephen Kings Dreamcatcher. For a while my ma and I lived with my grandma who had a bookshelf in the hallway where she kept her reference books and Christian comedians. (Continued in first reply)

jessinikkip My mother stored a few books here, among them Dreamcatcher and told me not to read it until I was older. I begged and pleaded until one day, tired of hearing it, she let me read it. And at age 9 I fell in love with horror novels. 11mo

I listened and read this book, and I loved it both ways. Historical fiction with two different timelines, a circus story that doesn‘t shy away from how problematic circuses were, and really good character development for Jacob. A lot of sad, but still a great read.
