Fantastic! Totally different from The Gentleman's Guide, but equal parts amazing and a great sequel. Think a lot less romance, and a lot more laugh-out-loud smashing of the patriarchy. Incredibly well done, with interesting characters and important themes, all wrapped up in historical fiction that feels authentic but still fresh and modern 👏🏽

Loved, loved, LOVED this book! I was worried that I'd feel election fatigue but was delighted to find myself completely sucked into this gem of an alternate reality where there's a female democratic POTUS, a multi-racial first family (from Texas), and some serious ? between the first son and "Henry" the Prince of Wales (don't let the cutesy cover fool you, this is not "YA" like I thought ?)

As a southern woman now living in NYC I expected to relate to this at least a little bit, but ultimately found the "humor" to be dated and just kinda boring. The "Southern Lady Code" was basically one sentence per essay and the only one I liked is on the cover. Otherwise, the essays felt like weirdly pieced together ramblings and I only finished because it was short. Bless her heart, Helen was just not my cup of tea I'm afraid.

Lcsmcat Is that “Bless her heart” ⬆️ or “Bless her heart” ⬇️ 😆 2w

As a single female with absolutely no desire to have kids, I can't really relate to this sordid tale about a fancy new school for gifted children and the lengths these competitive, wealthy parents will go to to ensure their kid makes the cut (thank goodness). But it's chock-full of juicy drama, compulsive writing, and bad behavior, so I basically just grabbed some popcorn and let myself be entertained 😂 #BOTM

8little_paws I work for a private school with many, many extremely wealthy families (tuition starts at $32k for pre-k) so I really don't need to read a fictionalized account of it 😂 To be clear, I love my job and think they overall do good stuff here. 3w
swishandflick @MicheleinPhilly Nice! Makes sense, it definitely gave me "Big Little Lies" vibes sans murder ? 3w
MicheleinPhilly @8little_paws $32k for pre-K???? That is obnoxious. @swishandflick I definitely had more than a few moments where I was picturing Reese and Laura and Nicole in these roles. 3w
8little_paws @MicheleinPhilly a lot of the who's who in Chicago send their kids there but there's a surprising amount of non wealthy scholarship kids there too. One of the parents had I believe 10 different luxury cars. All with vanity plates "toy 1" "toy 2" and so on. And a lot of families send multiple children there and ultimately end up giving the school $1M+ all in. 3w
8little_paws @MicheleinPhilly and in Chicago you are going to spend at least $15k+ for any non subsidized preschool + after school care anyways. City life is a fortune. 3w

Whew, that was much more intense than the average Nora Roberts book! The romantic plot doesn't come into play until nearly halfway through and there isn't much of a mystery because you're told exactly who the bad guy is early on - but that doesn't make it any less sinister. The mass shooting storyline is a bit too real, but I definitely recommend!

Oof, I don't even know where to start. All the Ugly and Wonderful Things was by far my favorite book in 2016 so the bar was set *extremely* high, and sadly, as much as it physically pains me to say it, I didn't enjoy this at all. Gentry's whole medieval speech angle felt forced, tedious, and exhausting. I feel like I just got caught in the crosshairs of a drive-by Renaissance fair. This will be a love it or hate it book, for sure #BOTM #WTF

Cinfhen I think you‘re either gonna love the character of Gentry or hate it! swishandflick @Cinfhen Agreed! Although All the Ugly and Wonderful Things wasn't her debut, she has two other lesser-known books! 4w

Megabooks @Cinfhen I liked it much more than Ugly Wonderful, mainly because of the lack of creepy pedophilia vibes! 4w

A decent twist wasn't enough for me on this one, I'm afraid. I feel like you never truly get to the root of the characters and their motivations, it all stays very surface level and contrived. You also really need to suspend disbelief to buy that the "diary" chapters were written by an 11-yr old ?

A couple of days ago I *almost* bought Broadway Tix for tonight. Thank goodness my plans changed bc it certainly would have sucked to get caught up in this!

Leftcoastzen Heard it was Rockefeller Center north on upper west side.this is the anniversary of the 1977 blackout w/ Son of Sam running around. 2mo
swishandflick @Leftcoastzen Ya, it's crazy that it fell on that same date! And it was a pretty huge chunk of Manhattan that lost power, something like Times Square all the way up to 72nd street and most Broadway shows had to cancel their performances, even Hamilton 😱 (edited) 2mo

These books are good for when I have a lot going on and need something easy to focus on. I thought this was a solid addition to the series and enjoyed the second half in particular. Love Roarke as always ❤️ #romance

ScientistSam I love this series! 2mo
Scorpioseah I love this series but I can‘t remember which books I have read and which I didn‘t because library don‘t always have the whole series so I just grab what‘s on the shelf. 2mo
swishandflick @Scorpioseah when I was in college I read one here or there but now I'm finally going through in order! Luckily my library seems to have all of them available on e-book so here's hoping the streak continues! 🤞🏼 2mo

Welp, vacation is well and truly over. All flights delayed getting out of Nassau because of heavy thunderstorms this morning, so I've just been chilling in the airport with a new book. Chipping away at this monster of a series about as fast as my library holds come in 😄

LauraJ Hope your flight gets in soon. 2mo

This was an excellent vacation read! I always enjoy Swanson's page-turners and this was no different. If you're a fan of his stuff, definitely check this one out - my fave of his since The Kind Worth Killing 👏🏽
