Resurrection is Tolstoys final novel. It‘s a glimpse of Russian life…a dark and dreary look at the legal system, incarceration, the divide between rich and poor. This explains for me why the Russian revolution happened!!

Our coffee table is a reflection of us…a love of BOOKS 📚…a love of our farm with books on vegetable gardening, soil, bees, permaculture and bush foods. A love of walking..lots of wonderful walks in our local area..an eagerness to learn more about the indigenous voice to parliament and a new novel by Kate Atkinson.
Happy reading!!
I‘m hoping for a yes vote🇦🇺

CarolynM A yes vote shouldn‘t be in any doubt, but the Liberal leadership and the Murdoch media are spreading misinformation and frightening people, all because they think a no vote will be a loss for Albanese and therefore good for them politically. They‘re disgusting. I‘m going to a rally on the weekend, it will be interesting to see how many people are there. (edited) 9mo

There seems to be a theme…two wonderful Irish writers Claire Keegan and Sebastian Barry with stories of Irish life, two tales of the American frontier by Willa Cather and Carol Shields, two fantasy novels with strong messages by Robbie Arnott and Salman Rushdie and a wonderful non-fiction with stories of Australian native animals in our suburban backyards!

5⭐️‘s from me for Limberlost by Robbie Arnott..such beautiful writing…really a simple story of living on an Apple Farm in Tasmania, surrounded by old growth forests and river estuaries. A coming of age story with gentle references to colonial dispossession and environmental degradation.

CarolynM I‘m hearing lots of praise of Limberlost, but I really disliked The Rain Herron so I‘m torn about whether I want to read it🥴 Small Things is beautiful, but you might find a bit of an atmosphere clash with the lovely weather it looks like you have in Brisbane. 1y

Set in Geneva in the 1920‘s, telling the story of Edith Campbell Berry who starts her career at the League of Nations. My second book in The Eliot Quartet. This is another poignant beautifully written novel. It is based on TS Eliot‘s poem Little Gidding. A War story telling of the Blitz in London, a love story, and like the poem a story of trying to move forward after tragic events. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it but after that…❤️❤️

I loved this book. Why…a retelling…a mix of of fact and fiction! The story of TS Eliot‘s wife Vivienne…some early history, an investigation by a wonderful policeman. Beautifully written. It‘s a joy to read. Consequently I have gone straight to another of his Eliot Quartet so I don‘t have a book hangover 😂😂
@CarolynM 👍🏼❤️

@CarolynM and I are reading this book together. It‘s about the wife of TS Eliot. She was placed in a private asylum and this is Steven Carrols story…part fact, part fiction. I‘m 1/4 through and already loving it!
It‘s the 4th book in his Eliot Quartet.
Carolyn I also like that it has some early life stories and the police investigation as the story develops. The character of the detective❤️Lovely writing..occasional references to cricket also❤️✔️

CarolynM You must have posted while I was writing my post. I couldn‘t stop reading. Such beautiful writing and such a sad story. “Aunty” was not a friend to Vivienne. 2y
Freespirit Yes I agree.. I wonder if she had endometriosis! @CarolynM (edited) 2y

CarolynM Week One completed🙂 I‘d like to have spent all day reading this book, the writing is lovely. I‘m intrigued by Vivienne‘s childhood & I wasn‘t expecting the police procedural aspect. 2y

Wow We Have Always Lived in the Castle is such a powerful short novel! An atmospheric Gothic thriller..with 2 young women left alone after all other members of the family are murdered..disliked by the community they live in..tragic, strange, and fascinating to read about the author who who suffered from agoraphobia and other physical and mental conditions..and died at 48!
And onto a book about the wife TS Eliot written by a great Aussie author!

Freespirit @jlhammar @LeahBergen loved it girls..brilliant!! 2y
CarolynM I might pick up Goodnight Vivienne next and read with you. Have you read his other TS Eliot books? They‘re so good. 2y
LeahBergen Great review! And I‘m so glad you liked it as much as I did. 😊 2y

LeahBergen @CarolynM I must get to the Carroll novel you bought for me soon! 2y
Freespirit No I haven‘t Carolyn. I did see this was the last of his TSE books but was ok as a stand-alone. Love to read it with you! I‘m slow..but steady😊 @CarolynM 2y
CarolynM I read the first 3 out of order, I don't think it matters because there's no sense in which it's biography. The one I sent to @LeahBergen is the first of the quartet. 2y

The Islands | Emily Brugman

The Islands is a beautiful book. A story of Finnish migrants travelling to live on remote Islands off the Western Australian coast. How brave they are to relocate, how hard it is to try to assimilate. This story is based on the authors family who were fisherman from Finland. 4 1/2 ⭐️❤️
The second book a portrait of our PM…who is he..what does he believe..what does he stand for…this book reinforces views I already held…hoping he‘ll be gone soon!!!

CarolynM I enjoyed reading Concetta Fierravanti-Wells's speech, although it's unfortunate she felt able to support him until now. 2y
Freespirit Wow Carolyn she let him have it didn‘t she..and he deserved it!! @CarolynM 2y
LeeRHarry I can‘t believe you have defaced Litsy with a photo of that man! 😱😉 I‘m in the middle of The Islands atm and really enjoying it 😊 2y
Freespirit 😱I didn‘t think of that Lee !!😂 Lovely book.. horrible man 🤨 @LeeRHarry 2y
