If this book wasn't so short, I definitely would have DNF'd early. The first ~30 pages were so hard to get into, and I really only started liking it about ~90 pages in. Felt very Hemingway/Fitzgerald, if those dudes had been around in early 2000's Spain. But after awhile, the MC's struggles because more understandable, and his clear Imposter Syndrome was more sympathetic. This is a so-so for me, a solid 3⭐. If it were longer, it would be a Pan.

Man I loved this book. A woman in her late 20's lives in a world where she believes the war has already started, and she is surrounded by pretenders- real vegans, fake vegans, people planting bombs in locations with no message, and her parents, the super liberal, left of hippie extremists, who dream of their daughter being gay and in charge of a terrorist organization. It's such a snarky view of modern liberalism, and I found it really funny.

I keep checking the pub date on this book, because it feels extremely current, not like something that came out 8 years ago. The world was so different 8 years ago!

"... the equation Bubble Tea = Something to Look Forward To depressurizes the misery of capitalism and is a Hello Kitty band-aid on the festering wound of Neo-Liberalism."

This book is not for everyone, but it is extremely for me.

I really enjoyed this story about the death of Skippy (no spoilers, since it's the title of the thing), a student at a boys' boarding school in Ireland, and how it affected everyone around him. The characters were really well drawn, which is how I stayed invested in this tome (661 pages!)- while the plot did drag on at times, I cared enough about all the characters, as highly flawed as they were, to see it through to the end. 4.5⭐

I've had this on my TBR for years, thanks to Literary Disco, and it was worth the wait. A woman in her 20s reads Treasure Island and becomes obsessed, wanting to live her life by the core ideas found therein. This includes buying a very expensive parrot with whom she doesn't get along and who suffers an untimely end, so TW for that. There's friend drama, relationship drama, family drama. It's so darkly funny, I just loved it. 4.5⭐

I really enjoyed this retelling of Cinderella, and maybe even more so because I knew nothing about it before I started listening. The story is fast-paced, and the characters were interesting. It definitely felt YA, if not younger, which isn't a bad thing. I'm grateful to the #Booked2019 crew for including Fairytale Retelling as a winter category, I definitely wouldn't have read this otherwise.

My first review on here, 2 years ago, and of course it was Murakami. What a heavy tome to start with! I had 2 earlier posts with images, so I don't know why I didn't have one with this- I just hadn't figured out that the pics were the thing! I got 3 likes, 2 from still-active users- @Liberty and @MaureenMc ! Thanks for the wonderful 2 years Litsy!

SailorMoon Nice reccomendation, at least for my experience. I started this book not used to Murakami's style and I bailed halfway through it... not my cup of tea, but not a bad book. 2mo

This was occasionally really great, but occasionally a slog that got a bit repetitive. This isn't a straightforward narrative about the sarin gas attack, but is rather stories from people, taken from dozens of interviews Murakami conducted after the attack. "I get up at 5:30 to go to work, I take x train and switch at y station" and on and on. It made me miss the way Murakami weaves a story, and u would have preferred a more traditional narrative.

This was cute and fun, though not super engaging. I'll read the next one to see if more of a story gets going, since the first volume is often a lot of setup. I feel like this is one of those books that will hit me really hard at some point in the future, but as of this moment I'm left feeling a little meh. A mix of flash fiction and slightly longer stories, this book looks at different catastrophic events, both big (death of the planet) and small (death of a relationship). I'm giving it 3.75⭐ (in my imaginary world where I'm allowed to rate things that way), but rounding up to four everywhere else.

The writing was gorgeous, but the plot flitted around quite a bit. The story of a murderer, but with very little murder until close to the end. However, if you ever want to read about the painstaking process to extract essential oils from plants, this book is for you.

I am taking serious liberties with this, but I would love to count it for the "MC with an invisible illness" category in #Booked2018 - Grenouille is born without scent of his own (making him seen invisible to others), and has an extremely heightened sense of smell himself.
