Maltese Falcon | Dashiell Hammett

I am looking for some good Noir and or paranormal noir. Any suggestions?

chaoticgoodhufflepuff If you liked Hammett, you could give Raymond Chandler a try too. Or James M Cain. There‘s Sue Grafton, as well. 2w
Marilyncjackson I am working on a Chandler now, is Grafton more cozy/traditional? 2w
Dragon If you haven‘t read the series already 2w

Marilyncjackson @Dragon thank you I have heard good things about that series 2w
Dragon Lisbeth Salander is one of the best characters - and so dark - 🐉 2w
chaoticgoodhufflepuff Grafton‘s not really cozy, she‘s more hardboiled 80s detective stories. 2w
Erofan Cornell Woolrich, David Peace, James Ellroy,... 2w
Marilyncjackson Thank you everyone 2w
ElizaMarie I found a book with Noir from New Haven. They have other “local” ones. It‘s been cool. Little short stories but like I keep thinking “ooo I ate there” I am gonna try to get one from my next assignment 2w
RaimeyGallant Hmmm...Have you tried Bosch? I haven't read the books but the TV show echoes Hammett's feel. 1w

So I am not big into doing these because of my anxiety. I will not be tagging anyone else because I don‘t want others to go through what I do. (Yes tagging people in things like this can cause anxiety) I am not calling anyone out I am glad people think of me as a fav litten it helps manage the anxiety
1. Action

This photo is of my co-worker/friend. When I told her this show was a book she said she has to get it and read it. We call two different stores, but I found it on the Walmart app. My hours are earlier than hers so she texted me when she got home. It was too good of a picture not to share here. She is a Litsy natural I am still trying to talk her into getting the app. Also, comment if you can find the cat 🐱.

Mehso-so

This was so-so for me. Just as it was getting good it ended. The build up takes forever for a little tiny bang. It is like a bottle rocket. It felt like I was reading a TV show but then the writer has written for Doctor Who. There was some hype about this book but I feel it was just meh. Maybe too short? I feel let down.

ShyBookOwl I'm always a little skeptical when a man writes a book about witches. The topic is so wrapped up (historically and today) in the female experience. 4w

Had to read this for book club. It is utter crap! Garbled rantings and fantasy of a 13 year old boy. I had high hopes but like most sci-fi from this time the heavy handed symbolism and lesson teaching was a total turn off. Why can‘t more sci go be like Star Trek you know discovering new thing, meeting new people, and adventure. Hitchhiker‘s Guide style that‘s what I want. I need to go wash the taste of this out of my mouth!

TheWintergarden I think Blade Runner was based off of this book. One of my all time favourite sci fi films so it's interesting to know it' 2mo
TheWintergarden Interesting to know the book version must be very different. 2mo
Marilyncjackson @TheWintergarden I have never seen Blade Runner and based off this book I never will. I am not a fan of dystopian old sci fi and I could fill up 100 or mor comments on why, but since this book was such a disappointment I will leave the film unwatched then I won‘t upset my film friends like I am upsetting my book friends with my distain for this book. 2mo

Marilyncjackson All this being said this book is still better than Paradise Lost. 2mo
TheWintergarden @Marilynjackson. Sounds like a sensible plan then. But I really really want to read it now! 😊👽💜 2mo
Marilyncjackson @TheWintergarden you should! And if you love it you should tell me why. Maybe you can change my mind. Probably not but it‘s always fun to discuss 😊 2mo
TheWintergarden @Marilyncjackson Will do!👽💜 2mo
rretzler Blade Runner was very loosely base off of this book. It‘s been many many years since I read the book, but the book and the movie are nothing alike. I do recall liking the book when I read it, but I don‘t remember enough to try to defend it. PKDs writing is definitely not for everyone, although many movies are based on his works. 2mo
TrishB I loved this when I was a teen, maybe I was masquerading as a 13 year old boy. I‘ve never read since as I know it‘s not my thing now. The film is nothing like it and is awesome. 2mo
Marilyncjackson I sometimes masquerade as a 13 year old boy lol. My comments may have been harsh, but I was so disappointed when I finished it. I might try the film since everyone says it is so different. 2mo
Shel.f To be fair, the first SF we did had a female protagonist. It was still dystopian as hell, though. I've been avoiding space opera just because I don't enjoy it. I know that a Poul Anderson book is coming up, though - AD leading. It's time travel, maybe it'll be better. 1mo
Marilyncjackson @Shel.f I hope the next one is better! But the discussion was good so it made it worth reading 😊 so glad to see you on here. Hope you like the website 1mo

I am a member of a library book club where we alternate between Sci-go, Urban fantasy, and fantasy. So far I have hated all of the Sci-fi books they pick because they are all dystopian and all super misogynistic. I think it is because they were all written in the sci-fi peak of the 1960s. Do any of you know newer sci-fi that is not dystopian and is not misogynistic?(more)

Marilyncjackson Something that has a female main character or a main character that doesn‘t think females should be in the kitchen or having babies. Something that‘s in the future but not where the world has ended. I don‘t know just something different then I am the biggest baddest man and I will conquer all aliens, or I‘m the only man left in the world that can save the world (more) (edited) 3mo
Marilyncjackson I don‘t know something more like Star Trek where people are out exploring space but not to conquer. Something more like that. Do any of you guys know books like that so I can suggest we read those instead of the crap we have been reading. Thank you ahead of time 😊 (edited) 3mo

Mehso-so

This book started off strong, but around the 45-50% mark it slowed to a crawl. The scenes started to repeat over and over again. At first they would seem like different scenes but in the end they were the same. Unfortunately, this made me skim the last 50 pages. I think the end would have been really good if it hadn‘t taken so long to get there. I have little intreat in reading the second book.

Marilyncjackson Oh yeah there were some really interesting story threads left unwound but not going anywhere. This was a shame because some of the repetitive scenes could have been left out in favor of the interesting threads 4mo

This book is never going to end. I am not saying this because it has a lot of pages I am saying this because omg the story just won‘t end! There have been several places to end it but it just keeps going, and going, and going. This is not a good thing as it is now dragging so badly I have to force myself to keep reading. This book is pretty good. I wish there was something less than pick but more than so so. The pacing of this book is a little off as I found it to be very interesting then it would start to drag. At times it felt like two different stories shoved together. But it was a pleasant and easy read. If you‘re looking to be entertained this is a good book for that.

Nope, I should have just passed. The best part of this book was between pages 50-150 everything else was just Alice in Wonderland. Btw I hate Alice in wonderland so this was not a good book for me. There was way too much going on. There were hints of clockwork, dark fairy tales, getting stuck in fairy world. Too much! Also, the description were way over the top and there was too much of it! Please leave some to the imagination.

Marilyncjackson Just please please stop describing everything using all five sentences and stop repeating and repeating and repeating! So there are some good quotes and good story for about 1/3 of the book the rest is just blah blah blah! 5mo

Marilyncjackson @julesG you were right about this book when I talked about it before. It went down hill hard and fast. Well I was enjoying this book. Key word here is “was”. This book started off really slow and then got good and just when I was think yay it‘s going to get better it got super slow and boring. Note to all authors out there please do not take a paragraph to describe things and do not spend pages and pages using flowery descriptive words it really takes away from reading. I am sure there are books omg there where RBI‘s is good but not this one.

Marilyncjackson And because I ran out of room: don‘t slow the book down to a crawl after the midpoint because when you do this I get bored. I am just skimming at this point so I can get it finished but I stopped caring when you added the boring description. The premise for the action is cool but you needed to cut out about half the words. See how boring this gets when I keep talking and adding words just to get a word count? 5mo
ulrichyumiodd I would say it‘s a personnal choice - I love descriptions. Reading them, writing them. It might be more common in French, though! We‘re all about pretty language, haha. 5mo

Marilyncjackson @StellarDoc yeah I stated really getting into it. I should have it finished today. 5mo
julesG I bailed when they ran from the lady with the bird. I was hoping for something darker. And when they crashed at the friend's house, she confused the names calling him Ellory in her head, then Finch in the next sentence. That was it for me. Sorry, I know, this might be shallow. But I kept looking at other books. 5mo
Marilyncjackson @julesG it‘s not shallow at all! We all have our breaking points where it is better to bail than keep slogging through. I do not like Outlander, Night Circus, or Throne of Glass and I know know a ton of people that do. I just like to know why people don‘t like a story just as much as I like to know why people like them. It helps me be a more careful reader and writer. Thank you for answering 😊 I hope you found something darker and better. 5mo

YES!!! This was awesome. It is Jane Eyre in space and it is great. I loved it. I think it is a pretty accurate retelling. It is missing things but what it adds in the third act makes up for anything left out. Some things have been changed to give it a freshness that Jane Eyre really needed. I very much recommend this book. Good job to Alexa Donne for creating a work that is beautiful and engaging.

#HelpMeFindNewBooksGiveaway @Amabear thank you for the giveaway. I don‘t have much space to tell you why Fahrenheit 451 is my favorite dystopian novel so I might have to go into the comments. To me most dystopian books have settings that are completely unbelievable. They seem so far-fetched to me that I can‘t imagine a future like that. However, Fahrenheit 451 felt almost like we are living in it today. I couldn‘t put it down. Continue in comments

Marilyncjackson A lot of the things that happen in that novel mirror what‘s going on today. Reading is illegal because it‘s a way to share knowledge and it‘s A way to get ideas out to the masses. Television and other things are run by the government to distract everyone from what‘s really going on. This is what makes Fahrenheit 451 such a great dystopian world. Because it makes you wonder if this is the very near future for us. 5mo
Marilyncjackson I could say a lot more but I don‘t like sparking social media debates so I‘m just going to leave this here. This is also the most I‘ve ever written on here 😊 (edited) 5mo

Bird Box: A Novel | Josh Malerman

Bailedbailed

I got this book for free on kindle a long time ago, but I didn‘t like it. I don‘t understand the hype. Maybe the movie is better, but I won‘t be watching it. I am glad others enjoyed it though 😊

Ingerella Not every book is for every person. I did like it, but there are several books that people loved but were not for me. Beartown is one example. 5mo
Naj I wasn't a huge fan of this as well. It was okay, but nothing special. I did complete it thinking there will be some gratification at the end, but there's no explanation of anything at all. 5mo
julesG @britt_brooke - see, you are not alone. 5mo

britt_brooke @julesG 😆 Thanks! This does make me feel better. 5mo
britt_brooke I just finished this yesterday and I don‘t get the hype either. I panned it. 5mo
Myhusbandhatesreading I finished it but didn‘t like it either so I‘ve been hesitant to watch the movie. 5mo
Courtneyjo_reads I didn‘t end up liking the movie at all :/ 5mo
Pricel101 @Courtneyjo_reads @Myhusbandhatesreading @brit_brooke @julesg @naj the movie was just plain silly, I hoped the book was better! 🤨 The popularity must have been due to all those Sandra bullock memes! 🛶🌊 5mo
Naj @Pricel101 @Courtneyjo_reads Thank you! I was planning to watch the movie but will skip it now. 5mo

Ok I wanted to wait and talk about this book when I was done with it, but I couldn‘t wait! I love it 🥰! The chapter I am on ended with the best line, but I can‘t share it because it would be a spoiler. I love Alexa Donne she has a YouTube channel I watch all the time. I love her writing and her fashion. Thanks Alexa Donne for taking Jane Eyre to space!

Thanks for the giveaway @LazyDays ! I love Litsy and I have been here almost a year now. #LitsyLove19

I love reading because I can live another life or 10. I get to learn new and interesting things. I learned how to put my hair in a bun because of Tuck Everlasting the book not the movie!

LazyDays Thanks for entering and good luck💜 6mo

Yay! Congratulations @SamanthaMarie 🍾 and what a cool give away.#samanthamariegets3333

My favorite number is 7 because you can write it with a little flag in it. It seems dumb but I like when you can make letters and numbers fancy without knowing calligraphy!

Thanks for the giveaway!

SamanthaMarie Ooo that is a super fun and creative reason to like a number. 👌🏻 Thank you for entering!!! 🙌🏻💃🏼🎉 6mo

Marilyncjackson @ElizaMarie I wonder why it didn‘t go through? I am sorry 😐 I will send the package there. I just wanted to make sure you could revive a little package there. My post office holds packages if they are sent to my PO Box. (edited) 6mo
ElizaMarie I‘ve gotten packages there before. Sometimes the office will hold them and I pick it up from there. Sometimes they give me a key and I just get them in an extra bin ... I‘m excited!!! @Marilyncjackson 6mo
