Thought provoking (and terrifyingly not that far-fetched!), Ramos tells a brilliant tale of modern inequality in all its ugly guises. One of the best reads of the year for me so far. Awesome💥

I‘m giving this a pick, but only just. Full of quirk, quips and Jackie Kennedy 🕶 it was a fun ride. But I felt there were too many things thrown into the story, some of which were really big serious things, and it didn‘t quite stir up the poignancy I think it should have. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Pickpick

Four families living in wealthy suburbia form a friendship based on little more than their address and kids the same age. However, their perfect lives and friendships are challenged when one family adopts a little girl from a Russian orphanage.

Quietly unsettling, this was a good reflection on what we sometimes do to cover our pasts and how we need to belong.

Mehso-so

This is the story of a book that was written, lost, and then found, and the lives of the people connected or affected by the book. I so desperately wanted to love it, and I can see the brilliance of the idea. Yet much of it seemed to pass me by, and I didn‘t really enjoy it. I think it might be a case of right book, wrong time - maybe I‘ll try again another time.

Much ♥️ and 🙏 to Trish for gifting this to me. I‘m sorry I didn‘t love it.

Laughterhp I‘ve owned this book for so long and haven‘t been motivated to start reading it yet!! 1mo

Buechersuechtling @Amiable @JennyM I perfectly feel you. I know that feeling so well. I tried Nicole Krauss‘s and Jonathan Safran Foer‘s books a few times. But what both of them have to say is obviously not for me. I can‘t find anything in their books and am always bewildered by all the praise they get for their work. 1mo
JennyM @Buechersuechtling @amiable I‘m always fascinated when a book that‘s so popular just isn‘t for you. The beauty of reading 📖📚 1mo
Buechersuechtling @JennyM @Amiable Most of the time I am thankful because after years of passionate reading I still can‘t push away that tiny first thought that comes up in those cases, saying: “Is there something wrong with you❓” – No, it‘s not but seemingly old habits die hard. 1mo
TrishB I didn‘t love either 😘 but you never know until you try! 1mo
Amiable @Buechersuechtling @JennyM I know what you mean about questioning yourself when you dislike the “popular” books. I‘d heard such great things about Jennifer Egan, so I read one of her novels —and hated it. It used to bother me to be so out of sync, but now I‘m comfortable with my own tastes. 1mo

The History of Love | Nicole Krauss
post image

I‘m really struggling to get into A History of Love - I know!!!! It‘s so loved but I feel I‘m missing something. So I‘m going to put it down for a day and have a change of pace. Hoping the tale of a murdering husband and wife team will do the trick!

BarbaraBB I was disappointed by that one too. Then I read Man Walks into a Room and was disappointed by that one too. I am looking forward though to Forest Dark! 1mo
Kalalalatja I liked it when I read it, but I don‘t remember much about it 🤷‍♀️ 1mo
JennyM @BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja there is a lot of #litsylove for it and, based on its premise, I should enjoy it. But I‘m not, and the first 100 pages have been a struggle to get through. I‘m putting it down for a few days...we shall see after that 1mo

TrishB I struggled too! But thought it was me! 1mo
JennyM @TrishB I want to love it, Trish, particularly as you were so kind to send it. But I‘m leaving it now till Monday because it might be just more about me at the moment than the book. 😘 1mo
TrishB Don‘t be worrying about that! If it‘s not to be 😘 1mo

Into the Fire | Sonia Orchard
post image
Pickpick

Lara‘s best friend, Alice, dies in an unexplained house fire and she feels that, somehow, she played a part in the tragedy. There‘s a solid story, and a little twist at the end, which I enjoyed. But really this was an examination of womanhood, female friendships, and feminism, that was told with some thought-provoking political and psychological threads. I think this would make a great book club pick. Great piece of #ozfiction

JennyM If you guys have read, I would love to hear your thoughts. It‘s set in Melbourne. @CarolynM @MrsMalaprop @Rissreads 2mo

This book was incredibly sad but very well done. The poignancy was in the things that were left out, leaving you to read between the horrible lines. It was not an easy read, and I feel you need to go in aware that there are a lot of triggers (abuse, addiction, violence). But these stories need to be told, even if it hurts to do so 💔

A sweeping story about 4 siblings and what led to the fictionally iconic ‘The Love Poem‘. It kicked me in guts a few times with some things too close to home, but, gah, it was great. I couldn‘t put it down.

Valentina and Luka are rising stars in the Imperial Russian Ballet. But with revolution in the air, and the country divided, the day‘s of the indulgent Romanov ballet look almost over, leaving the pair with a difficult choice about their love for each other, their country, and their lives as dancers.

❄️ Really well researched, and evocative in it‘s description of Russia 1914-1920. A treat to read ❄️

A fantastical book that bends genres and makes you think in the best possible way. The more I reflect on it, the more I appreciate Newman‘s ideas about individual actions and it‘s consequences on wider humanity. Very timely. If you‘re after something clever, different, and also relatively short, this might be just the book.

This book was good, but because I‘ve already read Normal People, there were too many similarities between the stories for me that I felt it didn‘t quite hit the mark. I also detested most of the characters, and was left a bit unsure of what to think with the ending. Between a pick and a so-so, with a feeling I would have enjoyed it more if this was my first Rooney read.

TrishB I‘ve read this first and didn‘t like so can‘t bring myself to read the next! 2mo
JennyM @TrishB absolutely Trish, if you didn‘t like this one, I don‘t think you would like Normal People. I was surprised at the similarities between the two. 2mo
