Congrats on your 50k #LitsyMilestone 🥳 And thanks for such a generous giveaway 😘

In Australia, Hallowe‘en isn‘t really a big thing, and we rarely get trick or treaters. And this year we will be spending the evening at an end of year school celebration - so not spooky at all. But I do enjoy seeing all the spooky posts from lovely international littens 👻

#spooky50k @MatchlessMarie

JennyM And I‘m so sorry @MatchlessMarie - I have chopped your head off on my repost 😘😘 4d

When Mia‘s long-term boyfriend asks for a break, she finds herself embarking on a humanitarian trip that takes her from the slums of Mumbai to the refugee boarder crisis in Europe.

While there were moments I enjoyed,I felt this was essentially a light romance and a bit of a fluff read. Maybe it was my expectations & not the book, but I was expecting more depth and so was left a bit disappointed. 👍 for the cover though 🐝

Ask Again, Yes: A Novel | Mary Beth Keane

After getting a lot of mixed reviews of late, I was a bit hesitant going in. However, after getting through the first very slow chapters, I found myself firmly in the ‘I-love-this-book‘ camp. Centering on two families over a few decades, we are taken through the suffering of life - trauma, loss, addiction, mental illness and more. But I saw the hope, and the power of compassion and forgiveness. This one will linger in my thoughts for a while.

Cathythoughts Oh very good ! I‘m so glad you liked it. I know I just felt a bit “ meh” ( I believe this is a word I‘ve seen around Litsy 🙂) anyway , so I felt a bit “meh” when I finished it 🤷🏻‍♀️..... I trust that” after book feeling. “ But, there is loads of love for this one. That‘s great you liked it 👍🏻♥️ 3w
JennyM @Cathythoughts I nearly bailed after the first few chapters though - so slow and boring. But then it took off for me and I was totally in. I can‘t wait to hear your thoughts on this one next...I‘m desperate for my copy to come in the library (edited) 3w

Loving this so far...oy, the snark 🙌

TrishB I have this on the pile- you may have pushed it up a bit more. More university pettiness?? 3w
JennyM @TrishB I enjoyed it. It‘s a LOT of University pettiness but with a bit of a twist. I can see why some think it‘s a bit pretentious, but I think that was kind of the point, and it worked for me. (edited) 3w

Ooofff, this book 💔 A hard-hitting, very realistic portrayal of three generations of women as they face older, middle and teen age. At times it was very difficult to read, and I shed more than a few tears. But it was done so well and the ending was a surprise.

A group of kids destined for juvenile detention are given a reprieve and sent to an alternative ‘school‘. It looks like they are part of some sort of weird experiment, but for what isn‘t clear, and the methods are dubious at best.

I have read some fantastic #ozfiction this year, and this has to be up there as one of the best! Very much in my wheel house. Great read!

Cathythoughts Great review! Is it very upsetting? Id like to stack .. a bit afraid of cruelty towards young people .... if there‘s hope then that‘s ok 2mo
JennyM @Cathythoughts there isn‘t any cruelty directly, but as we learn about each child, we do learn their individual traumas that have led to their being at the ‘school‘. Without revealing spoilers, I‘d say it‘s really about psychology and research studies. But I always think, if in doubt, then maybe not - always plenty of other books to read 😘 2mo

Leon is a 9 year old forced into foster care and separated from his baby brother. His story is heartbreaking and made me cuddle my little ones closer. However, I just couldn‘t get into the story like I was expecting. I read De Waal‘s second book, which I loved, but this is so very different. Maybe a case of going in with too high expectations - it was just not as good as I hoped it would be.

Room for a Stranger | Melanie Cheng

As part of a home share scheme, an Asian university student moves in with a 75-year old spinster in suburban Australia. An unlikely friendship is formed, but each are facing their own life difficulties, and with outcomes that impact both of them.

I didn‘t connect with the story as I would have liked, so it kind of missed the mark for me. But it‘s a different story that touches on some of the big issues (racism, ageism), so I‘m giving it a pick.

CarolynM I liked her writing in Australia Day, so I'm looking forward to this one. 2mo
JennyM @CarolynM it‘s good, I‘d just have liked a bit more character development. She could have gone a lot deeper into some of the issues. Hope you enjoy x 2mo

Augusta is the quirky twin, the clever one who doesn‘t quite fit in, while Parfait is raising his siblings in war torn Burundi. Worlds apart they are, yet this is their story. And, my goodness, it is lovely. The writing is simple and poignant - which did feel a bit YA for me at first - but literally had me weeping at the halfway mark. Lovely 💫💕

The writing in this one reminded me a bit of Ann Patchett, in its slow unravel and insight into the mundanity. It pulled on the heartstrings and took a turn I wasn‘t expecting. I enjoyed it.

BarbaraBB Oh I must check this out since I loved 2mo
JennyM @BarbaraBB I really enjoyed it. I‘ve not read any others by her, but I will now. Xx 2mo

An unsettling and thought-provoking book about the objectification and treatment of women. While packaged as a thriller, it was quite experimental in form, and reminded me why, as women, we are constantly vigilant about safety as we move through the world.

*TW - sexual assault

erzascarletbookgasm Nice review! 👍 I look forward to read this. 3mo
JennyM @erzascarletbookgasm it‘s though provoking! Hope things are good with you, Jessie 😘 (edited) 3mo

We Went to the Woods | Caite Dolan-Leach

Another solid read from Caite Dolan-Leach, author of Dead Letters. It was pretty clear where this one was going from the start, but I really enjoy her writing, so happily went into the woods with her 🏕

Kalalalatja What a great cover! 3mo
JennyM @Kalalalatja it‘s pretty 3mo

What to say about this book?!?! On one hand I thought it was brilliant. Focused on a thespian group of adolescents, it was dripping in teenage angst and drama, which the writing so aptly captured. Yet because of this, it was such a slog to read, and I felt wrung out every time I picked it up. Perhaps a little too over-wrought in style for me, I was quite glad when I finished it.

JennyM @cathipink - it was not what I was expecting, and I kinda need to recover now! 3mo
Suet624 Yup. I'm with you on this opinion. 3mo
JennyM @Suet624 it was a weird one, hey? The writing did something to me...I had a ball of anxiety in my chest pretty much through most of it. Which only a skilled writer can achieve, but it wasn‘t a pleasant experience! 3mo

cathipink Thank you for tagging me in your review! I'm sorry it was only a so-so 🙁 I think I might give it a pass... 3mo
JennyM @cathipink a pass is a good choice I think. Lots of other books to pick from as a next read 😊 3mo
Megabooks Slog pretty much describes how I feel about it. 🤣 3mo
JennyM @Megabooks I hear you!!! 😆 3mo

I really have to stop requesting library books. I don‘t need any more. But it‘s just too tempting!

JennyM @Kalalalatja @batsy I knew you‘d understand! 😘 (edited) 3mo
Buechersuechtling I perfectly feel you. Often library‘s are even more tempting to me than bookstores. Most of the time I am like that: “Oh, that sounds interesting. – And that I always wanted to read! – Look, this author has a new book. – That‘s the book I heard the librarian talk about; let‘s see how I like it. – And this is so tiny there must be space for in my backpack.” 3mo
JennyM @Buechersuechtling yep, all those book on offer with NO cost, it‘s just too much! 😆 3mo
BooknerdsLife AAHHH 😍😍 I don‘t blame you 😂Who can say no to books Especially when they are free!!! 😂👏🏼👏🏼 Happy Reading! 📚📚❤️ 3mo

I don‘t read much sci-fi but when the lead time traveller is a 71 year old woman (Yes!!!) I thought I would give it a go. Not really my bag but it had a good storyline and, at less than 200 pages, was the perfect bite size for me.

All the 👏🏼 to the author for writing a non-typical lead character!

Kalalalatja That does sound like something different! 3mo
JennyM @Kalalalatja not my go to genre, but so happy to see an older adult portrayed as a kick ass lead character. We need more! 3mo

What a great, punchy palate cleanser! I didn‘t think there was much meat to the story, but somehow it worked for me.

TrishB Still on my tbr! 3mo
JennyM @TrishB it‘s so short you will read it while brushing your teeth 😆 3mo

JennyM @CarolynM I found it quick and entertaining. It‘ll be a good one to discuss x 3mo
Rissreads It is a quick, fun, easy read but I was surprised to see it on the Booker longlist. What do you think @JennyM ? 3mo

I‘m not sure how to review this other than say it‘s a fantastic, quirky, funny and sad gem of a book. There‘s a lost manuscript, a crazy literary family, and an extraordinary life. Loved it!

TrishB I‘ve read her fantasy series which was great, didn‘t realise she‘d written anything else. 3mo
JennyM @TrishB I‘ve never read anything by her but this is brilliant. She‘s got the balance between humour and heartbreak just right! I‘ll definitely read more by her (edited) 3mo
TrishB Have stacked 👍🏻 this sounds completely different to her dystopian, fantasy stuff. 3mo

Louis & Louise | Julie Cohen
post image

On Sept 8 1978, Lou is born, and this is the story of Lou as a male and Lou as a female. Told in parallel, I thought it might be confusing to have dual life stories, but it worked well, and there were interweaving chapters when Lou was brought together as one. Issues around masculinity, femininity, patriarchy, sexuality and equality were at the heart of this story, and I‘m so glad to have read it. Highly recommend.

Tanisha_A Ooh! I like the way your picture complements the message. 4mo
