This was . . . different! The name is certainly fitting, because this lady was all kinds of crazy! I listened to the audio and loved how she would just slip some gruesome or outrageous statement into what started out as a normal sentence. I liked the uniqueness of it. I will definitely watch the movie when it comes out.
An unsettling and interesting read! I love Jackson! Merricat's bizarre witchy rituals, Julian's stilted rememberences, Constance's utter isolation - it's all so deeply uncomfortable. We can never know the truth, we can never trust anyone, we are all ultimately completely alone. But you have to forget those things, everyday, in order to move forward. And damn if Shirley Jackson doesn't just slap you in the face with how tenuous it all is.
I think I liked this. Not too certain. It was weird and
unnerving but I think that was the point.

Well. That was strange. I just finished up The Bog Wife and I‘m going to have to wrap my head around this story before I review it. I don‘t know if I loved it or hated it, but I do know I‘m terribly unsettled. 😂😂😂
This did not survive the re-read. I'm going to read it on stream because my chat voted for it and it's a classic, but wow, Bram sure had ISSUES. He's obviously tormented by his own desires (especially since the man he loved was a jerk), and the anti-Roma racism is distressing, along with the constant re-affirmation of Victorian mores and gender norms. Harker's journal at the beginning is the best part. Skip the rest. Carmilla was so much better.
I had hibernated this book, but I'm not missing reading it, so DNF'ing it instead.

Wow, this thriller was quite the mystery! I really enjoyed trying to figure out whether or not Clare was actually going crazy seeing ghosts or if they were actually there. It was pretty convincing the way the story is told that you believe the ghosts are really there right along with Clare.
The way that the history of Riven House unfolded alongside Clare‘s personal journey kept me hooked through to the very end.
