I really adored Merricat even if she was a little nuts. This was such a weird and increasingly uncomfortable read. Definitely didn‘t expect where it ended. I really enjoyed this though. Has anyone seen the Netflix movie? Is it worth seeing?

This was my #DoubleSpin

Also completed one of my goals for #joyousreadathon

11-24-21: My 119th finished book of 2021! The sad story of the Blackwood sisters, Mary Katherine and Constance, who live with their ill uncle, Julian. The rest of their family is dead, poisoned, but by whom? The villagers despise the girls, who live a quiet life outside of town, but the sisters adore each other. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣1️⃣9️⃣

4.7⭐️ I think this is one of those you love it or you leave a type of books… I don‘t think there‘s any in between. With that being said, what the actual f&$@ did I just read. It was so bizarre and uncomfortable. I loved it, I one of those I loved it. There‘s so many twisted wrong things about this book that it just made it so right. #TeamHendrix #scarathlon2021 #scarathlon

I'm still unsure how I feel about this book. I remember reading The Lottery in high school and it was one of those stories that really stuck with you. This one not so much.

I'm rereading this beauty with my sister and remembering just how much I love it! As Jackson's son Barry Hyman says, "She hovered on the fine line between mental ilness and the supernatural." Which is so true and exactly what I love about Shirley Jackson and Gothic fiction in general. ?‍⬛

Every spooky season I see people raving about this one so I had to add it to my list this year.

I was bored out my mind.

The creepiest part of this book was the cousin trying to take over their lives & inheritance. Mary-Cat had the potential to be a really cool character, I would've loved for the story to be more about her burying her little treasures around the property & what led to the events that took place before the book begins instead.

Airykah13 I couldn‘t get into that one either. I read another one by her and it was the same. I think Shirley Jackson‘s writing style just isn‘t for me. 3mo

I honestly don't know how to describe this book. It's thought-provoking. The characters appear really simple at first, but layers are added on until you have a complex story with even more complex characters. They all struggle with mental disorders but don't receive the help they need. Society tends to shun these topics, and this book gives an accurate depiction of that, exposing a harsh reality. There are so many layers that my mind can't keep up

Shirley Jackson's “The Lottery“ has stayed with me since I read it at school, so I had high hopes of this going in. It didn't have quite the same impact (maybe because nearly 50 years has gone by) but it was still very enjoyable with the off-kilter viewpoint of the narrator and the slow reveal of just how off-kilter it was plus the disruptive influence of the cousin's intrusion.

This book was fantastic. A classic novel by the author who wrote the short story "The Lottery". Great descriptive writing. What is interesting is what the author leaves out. You won't know where the story is going until the very end. There are so many unanswered questions. I recommend this book. Added bonus... it is only 146 pages long.

Since it came out, I have loved the 2018 movie adaptation of We Have Always Lived in the Castle

And now that I‘m trying to read the original, let‘s just say the first page does not have me disappointed

khooliha Strong opener! (And I can't count how many times, as a child, I looked at my middle fingers and thought "They're pretty much the same length, yeah? Good enough for me, make with the wolf!") 4mo

This gothic suspense novel centres around sisters Merricat and Constance. Since the poisoning of (almost) their entire family, they've been living a reclusive lifestyle. Their cosy dynamic with Uncle Julian and Jonas the cat is challenged when Cousin Charles comes to stay...

I enjoyed it for its atmosphere, its unique characters and its quirkiness. Clever and unique.

I'm bored and am listing my nine favorite (English language) fiction books.
A classic! We Have Always Lived in the Castle is the only one I don't own a copy of, mainly because I can't find a hardback with this superior cover. It's about Merrikat who lives in a big scary house with her sister, in the forest away from the village where no one wants to have anything to do with them. At one point they had a family, but something happened. The ⬇️

annamatopoetry book slowly unravels the story and what the hell is going on, although Merrikat isn't exactly a reliable narrator. Spooky, weird, and very strange little book. 8mo

I mean It‘s Shirley Jackson so of course it was amazing. This was my first reading of this book, but the question i have is...what they heck went on in this woman‘s mind that she wrote these books. So twisted and yet....relatable and good. I am going to have to see if I can find a biography of her to read.
