The Haunting of Hill House | Shirley Jackson
The classic supernatural thriller by an author who helped define the genre First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powersand soon it will choose one of them to make its own.For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Forgot to take a picture last night. Watched an actual scary movie! Figured I give it a try since I just finished the book!

I did not like this adaptation. It was way too different. I want to watch the one on Netflix but I think it‘ll be too scary for me!

#teamstoker #scarathlon +4pts

Lcsmcat The one on Netflix is very different from the book. There‘s a 1963 version that sticks more closely. It gives the psychological effect rather than monsters-jumping-out-of-the-walls effect. 1d

veritysalter @OriginalCyn620 You must, it‘s intense and eerie. There‘s a fabulous old black and white film that‘s fairly true to the text. I enjoyed the Netflix, mainly for the Easter Eggs hidden in it, but it is only takes vague themes from the book. 🖤🖤🖤 1d

I read this because it is considered a classic horror book and it is mentioned as a favorite of characters in many books I love. I kept waiting for that moment that everything falls apart and it gets wickedly scary, but it never came. It is hailed as, “a perfect work of unnerving terror” but seems to be more about mental illness and declining sanity.

I'm beginning to realise that this is exactly the kind of book I love/crave. Pitch-perfect existential horror. A masterpiece, really. The utter terror of the unknown in every human psyche. That, combined with who knows what exactly is *out there*. I was riveted from start to finish & knew I was in the hands of a master. Family, individuality, guilt, love, burdens. Her writing itself feels haunted, layered with meaning. #spinsterlit #femalegothic

batsy I just learned on twitter that it was published 60 years ago today. Happy birthday to this brilliant mindfuck of a book. 5d
Billypar After 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle' I'm ready for more Jackson - this sounds excellent. And speaking of existential horror - I'm in the middle of Oyeyemi's 'White is for Witching' and loving it. Scarier to me in many ways than straight horror. 5d

andrew61 Great review - i read it last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Reminds me to try and pick up another by her soon in library. Interesting life as well. 4d
Centique I‘m going to have to read this despite being a terrible sook (is that term known everywhere?) I love creepy and I can do dark - but only if there are some breaks in the atmosphere to allow me to breathe! 🤞🤞 4d
saresmoore Ooh, such a good review! Must read ASAP! 4d
batsy @LeahBergen Thank you! And yes, great phrase! The way the house itself is characterised is unforgettable. 4d
batsy @andrew61 Thank you! I loved We Have Always Lived in the Castle as well, if you haven't read that. And I'm looking forward to reading more of her work. You're right about her life being interesting—the Ruth Franklin bio seems good! 4d
batsy @Centique No, that's the first time I'm hearing it! That's a cool word! I'm going to use it 😆 It's more psychological terror than anything but Jackson is a writer who keeps things weird and strange at all times. There are moments of respite, I think, that makes it all the more compelling/sad/scary. 4d
batsy @saresmoore Thank you, Sara! 4d
LeahBergen @Centique Sook is a word I only hear from east coast Canadians, mostly Newfoundlanders. I love it! 😄 3d
Centique @LeahBergen @batsy and if you want to add some syllables you can say “what a sooky lala” which is more or less the same, probably extra soft and nervous 😂😂 3d
LeahBergen @Centique I‘m going to use that! 😆 3d
batsy @Centique @LeahBergen That's perfect! I'm tickled because it's a Malaysian slang thing to end sentences with a "la" for emphasis ? 3d
Centique @batsy oh yes! I learnt two phrases from my friends mum and they both end in la. I think they‘re both super rude though 😂😂 3d

Graywacke She really was a master, and she shows it so well here, fully in control. Brilliant book. It's especially good on audio, too. 1d
batsy @Graywacke Yup, agreed ❤️ I'm not very good with audiobooks because I really struggle to pay attention, but I can imagine it must have been intensely creepy as a listening experience too! 14h
Graywacke @batsy I was more entertained than creeped out. 🙂 Well, I was a little concerned who would do what. But mainly my inner skeptic demanded rational explanations and, to her credit, it still works that way. 13h

#Fallisbooked - Day 15

#Pumpkin - Everyone at my work is decorating their cubicles for Halloween. I was originally going to decorate my area with scary books, but I realized that might be a tripping hazard (plus I‘d be tempted to just read the books at my desk all day), so I went with pictures of horror books and thrillers instead! I see now why this is considered a classic horror novel. The subtleness in the shift of the characters mental state made it much more frightening. Is it real? Are they possessed or just having a bad day? Was that all in their head or did it really happen? It‘s so well done! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Such a perfect book for October!

Having watched the show and desperately wanted to read this book last year, finally getting around to reading it this year, it was absolutely fantastic. Eleanor “Nell”, trying to find a home and a place to feel herself. Thinking all along she had finally found a place to belong, only to feel as if everyone turned on her. Definitely not a book you want to read “In the night, in the dark.”

While the dialogue felt old-fashioned, Shirley Jackson descriptions of the house, particularly the oppressive outdoors were excellent.

This is part of the Penguin‘s hardcover horror series, which is very well done. Matte cover with glossy embossing, black sprayed edges, but sadly no decorative endpapers. Also, do not read the introduction until after you finish the book unless you want spoilers.

Just finished this third book for #lmpbc and loved Jackson's terrific, creepy writing. My only regret is that I read this a month too early 🎃

@Shakespearience this will be headed your way on Wednesday

Shakespearience Yay! Will definitely be adding it to my #Screamathon and #Scarathlon stacks for sure! At least someone from the #LMPBC gets credit for it 😅 3w
Shakespearience Did you send it Wednesday or was it supposed to arrive Wednesday? 2w
ladyneverwhere It should have arrived either this evening or if not it'll be there tomorrow. If you don't have it by tomorrow night let me know and I'll check the tracking number. 2w

#101 of my year 😈 I absolutely loved the show and can‘t wait till season 2. Now time to dive into the story. I‘m loving that cover so much and shall kick off spooky season with this one!

Clwojick I am obsessed with the cover art! 🙈😱😍 3w
Caffeinated_Reader @Clwojick right!!! I got it in my owlcrate subscription box and was so giddy when I saw it! So far the book is nothing like the show lol so it goes. 3w
Caffeinated_Reader That was exciting. I like the tv show a lot more than the book. The book was creepy and entertaining and great but it was still lacking I thought. Maybe I would have liked it more had I read the book first but I doubt it. Judging the book separately from the show I give it 5 stars for a great eerie experience! 3w

Loved it! Not necessarily what you‘d expect from a haunted house book since you‘re never really sure where the “ghosts” are coming from. 🏰👻
