The Haunting of Hill House
The Haunting of Hill House | Shirley Jackson
The classic supernatural thriller by an author who helped define the genre First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powersand soon it will choose one of them to make its own.For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. I thought I might end up liking Hill House just as much as We Have Always Lived in the Castle — which is one of my favorite novels ever! Eleanor & her rambling daydreams & cup full of stars charmed me immediately. The last fourth of the book, though, wasn‘t quite what I wanted. The end felt a bit rushed & muddy. Still, Shirley Jackson‘s writing ALWAYS astounds me. She‘s wonderful & still feels modern, 60+ years later. My dark (& funny!) Queen. 🖤

📖 Reading: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson (print) & Why We Swim by Bonnie Tsui (audio).

🎃 Weekend/Halloween Plans: A backyard (spooky) movie at a friend‘s house. I‘ve decided to go as “When Life Gives You Lemons” (name-tag reading “Life” + a basket of lemons).

🙏🏻 Grateful for: An unexpected day off from work (power outages due to storms & high winds).

There were some good things and some bad things about the book. I liked that the story is open to interpretation, there are things that work together in such a way that it is hard to completely comprehend. I liked that you aren't quite sure what was only happening in her mind, and what was actually real. It kind of messes with your mind a bit.
Conversations didn't always make sense, and the pacing just felt off to me. Overall, I would read again.

I‘ve been at the emergency vet with Moxie since noontime. I‘m hoping it‘s nothing major…but rabbits are so delicate that it‘s always advisable to bring them in immediately if anything seems remotely off.

SpongeBob has been on the TV for the last 4 hours.

Maybe not too spooky but it has elements of supernatural creatures/elements. This book is also sad because there are traces of insanity and that end? So sad😢I liked the story of these persons spending some days in this apparently haunted house. I saw some psychological aspects and maybe that is why I liked it. The tv series more than an adaptation is a version of the book, so different from the book but I‘m enjoying it. 3.8⭐️

I chose this classic for my first spooky #audiobook for October. I was underwhelmed. The narrator is good and the book is only 6 hours long, so it‘s still worth reading since it‘s considered a classic. I was expecting something really creepy and disturbing and this wasn‘t it. But it‘s easy listening and not terrible. 3⭐️

So I didn't know this was a classic or anything, I just saw haunting of hill house and its spooky season and decided to pick it up. Now if you're looking for a spooky haunting book, this is not it. There was absolutely nothing spooky or haunting about this book. If you want a classic, it will be right for you. But I'm giving this a 1 star just because I was very disappointed the whole time because I wanted haunting.

Yuki_Onna 😬 It's on my TBR as I love haunted house stories... Therefore, I hope I won't agree with you this time... 😝 2mo

#LittensDressedInBlood – Walking With a Ghost – “…Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Another book where I am left pondering WHY did I wait so long to read it?

Dr. Montague is searching for evidence of a “haunting”. While he rents Hill House for a summer, he invites lots of people whom he has chosen to be potential guests but the only ones to come include Theodora, his assistant; Eleanor, a fragile young woman with previous experience with poltergeists; and Luke, who will go on to be the future heir of Hill House.

Nothing like the incredible netflix show but I understand why they changed it. They kept the spirit of the house though. This book was written in 1959 so it isn‘t at all of the level of horror that we expect now but back then was probably the scariest thing anyone had ever read lol. It‘s really well written though. She does an amazing job at giving the house a real personality.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⚡
I really wanted to read this Shirley Jackson classic, because the Netflix show was amazing. I knew that the show was loosely based on the novel, so I wasn't surprised by just HOW loosely. I spent a large part of this novel not entirely sure what was going on, and normally that would bother me, but in this case it was very intentional, and disoriented me enough that it helped me empathize with the main character's deteriorating state of mind.

I've finally got my hands on this one...
I've been meaning to read it forever!
But about 30 pages in my brain recognised the story ... It even produced the ending.
Now I know I have never read this, so my only other option was that I must have seen a movie based on it and never realised.
😤
So Google proved my brain right. I've seen and LOVED The Haunting. and yes it is based on this book.

I‘m not a big horror reader - I want to be but I get so easily spooked it takes me ages to get through a book! This one, however, I devoured. Yea I was spooked but Shirley Jackson‘s writing kept me going. I found her characters believable and compelling and her sense of place evocative. The balance f character drama and action was just my cup of tea. Well crafted. It‘s my second book of Jackson‘s and I‘ll certainly read more. E-book from #libby

I‘m always left fascinated by Jackson‘s narratives. They always feel like such masterpieces, the way she weaves gothic troupes with contemporary issues to add depth to an already compelling story.

This is about an occult scholar, his assistant, the future estate owner, and a psychically sensitive outcast all staying in and documenting a haunted house. I‘m amazed how I could feel the influence of the house seeping into the characters by the end.

This was my Halloween read this year. Lots of fun. Shirley Jackson never really spells things out for you, but I like that about her writing. Getting to decide for myself is part of the fun! And she is one of the queens of gothic literature, as shown by the characters and setting in this one. Descent into madness was well-written, and I really liked the ending. Not a new favorite read, but still a solid good time.
