3/5 🌟

The initial half captivated me with character introductions and a compelling storyline build-up. However, as the narrative progressed, I anticipated a chilling turn that never materialized. Perhaps my skepticism played a role, but I found the climax disappointing. Instead of a haunted house tale, it delved more into an individual's psychological decline, echoing the idea that it's people, not houses, that bear haunting experiences.

Unpopular opinion time.

I was disappointed by this one. It had the potential to be really brilliant, but all the directions it could have taken seemed to fizzle rather than pop.

We have a decent eerie set up, but instead of tension building to a tense climax, it comes in dribs and drabs and then peters out in a rushed ending.

Between mysterious ambiguity and frustrating lack of clarity, we have the latter.

Unsatisfying 😔

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ruthiella The ambiguity was just right for me in this case, but I understand where it might be too opaque for others. 4mo

Having just read one book of hers, I already feel like Shirley Jackson is going to be a new favourite author of mine. Her prose is sublime, layered, intricate, loaded and somehow effortless. This book was a beautiful mix between classic, jump-scare horror and psychological torment. Written and set in the 1950s it brilliantly reflects themes of feminism, loneliness, identity and more. (Continued in my comments 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻)

i.z.booknook The dialogue was superb, with many a sarcastic comment and outright lie, making you doubt what you see and hear from the characters as they doubt each other. I felt pretty scared reading in bed at night before going to sleep! Reading in broad daylight on the tube was a bit more manageable. I‘m really looking forward to reading more Jackson! 5mo

Watched this Stephen King produced series from 2001. What a doozy… this is based on the book The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

Is it fun when a cameo is done by the so called directors or authors of movies- like Stan Lee in all of his Marvel Movies? I think so, what do you think?

I love everything about this book. Listening to it was such a different experience, too. I related so much to Eleanor's emptiness and feeling displaced, especially being familiar with Jackson's stories about motherhood and the loss of self that comes with it. This is one of those books you can grow with and see different perspectives at different stages of life. ❤️👻

Dark, atmospheric, & with a creeping sense of wrongness stalking the pages from the opening line, this book is a masterclass in horror—easy to see why it is regarded as a classic. Jackson knows full well it is what is seen out of the corner of your eye, the noises you only just hear, &, most of all, one‘s own imagination that can propel one‘s fears to the greatest heights & lead to inevitable, often terrible consequences. This is a good one.
