The Haunting of Hill House
The Haunting of Hill House | Shirley Jackson
The classic supernatural thriller by an author who helped define the genre First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I wanted so bad to like this book because of all the good things I hear on here and from friends and even Stephen King loves this book. But I just... I just couldnt. I finished it but i just didnt like it.

laurenslibrary Yeah it wasn't my cup of tea either. 21h
Stacypatrice I didn‘t like it at all. Big disappointment after all the hype. 21h

jessinikkip Glad to see its not just me. Maybe other horror novels have made me biased but when you say ghost story, I want a nun named Helen really buried in the walls or something. I want mayhem. This didnt do it for me 12h

This is the first horror book (or shall I say “terror” after visiting Radcliffe‘s ideas of what separates the two) that I have ever read. I did find some scenes disturbing as they are supposed to be psychologically, and as silly as it sounds only read it during the day. Hey, I‘m a highly sensitive person with strong beliefs about the spiritual world. It was no We Have Always..., but an intriguing read that I‘m glad I bolstered my nerves against.

What did I just read? I‘m thinking the author might have been on an acid trip while writing this?

Reading this with my family‘s notations in the margins was very entertaining and made the book a definite pick! It wasn‘t scary but was creepy and perfect for a Halloween buddy read or a mark up book club.

I like this book very much. Also, I finished watching the Netflix series yesterday. They are quite a bit different, keeping just the central idea same but yes, I loved both. The book and the series both have so much deeper aspects to dive into. They keep you hooked till the end too.
I'd suggest you to try both💕
First the book, definitely.

“ Hill house, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within...silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.” I‘ve wanted to buy a copy of this book for years, always searching used bookstores and book fairs. Finally saw this special edition at 2nd and Charles and decided to grab it as I love the cover. Perfect psychological suspense/horror. One of my favs of all time.

What an odd book. I‘m not really sure what was going on in Hill House, but it was a creepy tale. Not huge scares. It was more of a cold dread throughout. A definite pick.

Lizzybennetgirl I read that book in college! I remember thinking it was strange too, but it reflects on a lot of social issues in the 50‘s era. The horror genre is all about facing real fears in a safe place. 2mo

After reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle last year and loving it, I really wanted to love this book too. I did enjoy the haunting aspect of the story. I wasn‘t expecting to be scared by it, and I wasn‘t, but I did enjoy its creepiness. On the downside however, I spent most of the book feeling irritated because the characters and their interactions with each other really grated on my nerves. 😩

I am madly in love with the writing here. Jackson's characterizations were especially vivid and gorgeous -- every character was so individually, immediately alive the moment you found them on the page. But oh, poor Eleanor. I'm sorry you weren't in a different story.

This caps a 4-page scene where Eleanor, who paid for half this car, is denied the use of this car by her sister's family, who have no intention of using this car themselves.

The mother of all horror novels - creepy yet subtle horror, deeply psychological, often quite clever and even funny, with a well-assembled cast of characters. I enjoyed the #audiobook and could definitely see rereading it in print. Will definitely read more of Shirley Jackson.

I know this is book nerd sacrilege, but this is a case of the Netflix series being better than the book. I found the audiobook to be very repetitive and was annoyed by the sing songy rhymes that kept popping up.
The Netflix version took many liberties, but it was exciting to hear things in the audiobook that I recognized from the show no matter how differently they were used - the cup of stars, for example.
Glad I listened, glad I'm done. Next!

Bookwm85forever I thought the book was very dry. The best part was the end. 4mo

I liked that we are seeing the story through the eyes of one character, Eleanor. The story would not have been as effective if we bounced around between view points. As the book progresses, Eleanor‘s sanity starts to come into question and she becomes a bit unreliable. What is real and what is imagined becomes the question. Or are there supernatural forces at work. I like that the book kept me off balance.

Read Feb 5-13; rated it 3.5 ⭐️. The only reason this took me so long to read was due to me being under the weather. Jackson‘s writing is tight. There is an unreliable narrator and you can‘t tell if the haunting is real or not. The story isn‘t scary but it leaves you feeling uneasy. I‘d recommend it to others to read.
