Authority: A Novel | Jeff VanderMeer
After thirty years, the only human engagement with Area Xa seemingly malevolent landscape surrounded by an invisible border and mysteriously wiped clean of all signs of civilizationhas been a series of expeditions overseen by a government agency so secret it has almost been forgotten: the Southern Reach. Following the tumultuous twelfth expedition chronicled in Annihilation, the agency is in complete disarray. John Rodrigues (aka "Control") is the Southern Reach's newly appointed head. Working with a distrustful but desperate team, a series of frustrating interrogations, a cache of hidden notes, and hours of profoundly troubling video footage, Control begins to penetrate the secrets of Area X. But with each discovery he must confront disturbing truths about himself and the agency he's pledged to serve. In Authority, the second volume of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, Area X's most disturbing questions are answered . . . but the answers are far from reassuring.

Finally got around to reading the second book in this amazing series! This one has a completely different feel than book one, but the same intrigue and pressure to keep reading and discover the secrets of Area X. Can‘t wait to finish up this trilogy!

This book tells the story of Area X from the bureaucratic side of things. It dragged on for me. Others have said the third book is better. I do like how we get to look at Area X from three different perspectives.

Book 2 of the Southern Reach Trilogy is SO different from Book 1. And not in a good way.

The writing style, the main character, the overly detailed descriptions 😫 ...it‘s dragging. I just want a continuation of Book 1 (which was fantastic) not a whole new character with an entirely new (and quite dull) backstory.

Littens who have read this series, please tell me it‘s worth it when I get to Book 3!

TheBookAddict Sorry, I haven‘t read the book, but I love your doggy. My little Gigi looked just like that. I miss her so much. We lost her to uterine cancer 😔. What‘s your pup‘s name? 11mo
glitterkitty459 Cute puppy 😍🐶 I did read this whole series, and the second book is kinda slow, but for me towards the end it got a lot better. And the third is def better too 😊 11mo
Elma I felt the same way about this book. For me personally the ending wasn't worth it. I kept hoping the end would be so good that slogging through book 2 and 3 would be worth it, but it just wasn't. I know a lot of people loved them though. 11mo

DGRachel I didn‘t bother with book three. I loved book one. Thought this one was just “meh” and read something that made me decide three wasn‘t worth the effort. Good luck, whatever you decide. 11mo

A bit frustrating, after loving the first one, to be underwhelmed by the sequel. From what I've heard, both here on Litsy and elsewhere, it's a necessary evil. So I will read Acceptance soon and hopefully end on a high note!

Part two of the Southern Reach Trilogy follows a man who calls himself Control. He is sent into Southern Reach to make a sense out of the mess there. While he tries to figure everything out he also questions the biologist we met in book one. Nothing much happens for most of the book, it is interesting but not as enthralling as book one. Only during the last 80ish pages he gets closer to understanding and all of a sudden A LOT happens. 3/5 ⭐️

I‘m...not sure what to think of book two. Unlike book one, it seemed stagnant, and that nothing that happened had a purpose, until we hit the last 80 pages, where the plot kicked up. I‘m still going to read the third book & see where the story goes though.

I‘m interested in seeing where the story goes from here. I‘m not expecting answers.

“This was what most people wanted: to be close to but not part of. They didn't want the fearful unknown of a 'pristine wilderness.' They didn't want a soulless artificial life, either.”

Surprisingly, I liked this one slightly more than Annihilation. The story needed more characters and presenting a different perspective worked well. I‘m anxious to see what happens in book 3. I‘m not usually one for series, but I appreciate how different this is.

Switched to my Kindle & polished off "Authority" on a long flight west!

I agree that it has a "marking time" feel to it - except for the last quarter, which took off at a sprint - and it doesn't fully share Annihilation's eerie, dreamlike quality that I loved so much. But VanderMeer's writing still gets under my skin, & there were plenty of unsettling moments to keep my brain occupied for a while. (Whitby. WHITBY.)

Off to place a hold on book 3!

What if William S. Burroughs wrote for THE X-FILES and TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN, and that may come close to describing AUTHORITY. Not the typical spy thriller. What a delight that the beauty and weird of ANNIHILATION are still there in AUTHORITY—only in intriguing differences. The writing still has moments of poetry and the downward spiral of what‘s happening kept me reading furiously. Looking forward to Book 3: ACCEPTANCE.

Reading “Authority” was less fun than reading “Annihilation”. 200 pages in, the book read like it was written solely in order to turn two books into three. However, the resolve was decent enough to justify most of the construction beforehand.

I was not as fond of this one until the end. The spy novel and unanswered questions went to slow for me to really care about the main characters. Also I felt like the end should have happened 100 pages faster. I did like the storyline with the biologist and I wish more than the end would have come out of that. It would have been nice to see her and the assistant director talk. I don‘t know... I just felt like this was going backwards.

Authority is book 2 of the Southern Reach series. I found it disappointing after Annihilation (book 1), which gripped me from the beginning. I'm not sure if it was the different POV or the slow moving storyline, but I just struggled with this one all around. My desire to know the secrets of Area X is what got me through to the end.
