I enjoyed the book, the build up of the moments we're pleasing although some of the parts seemed to just be dragging on at times, the dragging on ended before it got Too TOO annoying.

Ret Det Hodges, Jerome and Holly really stand out and made me feel like I could relate to and see in my mind's eye each of them. And of course the infamous Brady

Brady is one complex villain ,his relationship with his mom often borders on disturbing. Holy is another character that is well developed and like able. Hodges to me is probably the least relatable character. Overall it is one of King‘s better books and worth reading.

#MayReads : I didn't read very many books this month because I read "The Way the Crow Flies" which took me quite a long time to finish. It's a complex, unusual read, but a bit boring at times.
My favorite reads this month were "The Tenth Circle" (of course!), "Little Fires Everywhere" and "Mr Mercedes".

One of SK's memorable villains, the demented Mr. Mercedes, Brady Hartsfield is a bona fide #creep. Also a victim of his alcoholic mother's #taintedlove. The role of Deborah Hartsfield could easily have been a generic creepy affair, but Kelly Lynch doesn't get enough credit for really imbuing it with substance, especially in the Deb-centric episode penned by Dennis Lehane. Love how King's characters often inspire empathy despite their depravity.

Thoughts about how terribly in/appropriate this book is for a 13 year old?

She‘s getting into mystery and has been wanting to read Stephen King, and vetoed all of my suggestions. This seemed pretty straightforward detective murder mystery, but 🤷‍♂️. I just don‘t think I want her reading the bizarre and twisted sex and disturbing rape scenes encountered in some of King‘s work.

IamIamIam As posted on my review, I'll do some thinking about what I can recall of King but do explore other authors like Koontz or Richard Matheson, whose short stories were adapted into many Twilight Zone episodes. However, my favorite King book is 9mo
brandybear22 @IamIamIam Thank you, I‘ll look at these other authors. I‘m not sure what her specific desire to read King is, although in Maine he is referenced every 10 minutes, so that could be a factor. I don‘t want to censor book access exactly, but I don‘t want her to run into themes she is isn‘t ready for, I vetoed a lot, for example, she really wanted to read 9mo
IamIamIam @brandybear22 I totally get it. We've told our kids, who are 7 and 10, that there are only 2 books in the house that they're not allowed to read until they're adults and that's American Psycho and Ladies Night! Lol, but there are adult situations in King books that I remember just not getting. I read Gerald's Game when it came out so early high school? 😳 lol, Matheson's short stories are phenomenal and this is a favorite! 9mo

I ended up finishing this. It‘s just not what I was expecting. I equate Stephen King with horror and this is, while horrific, a crime novel. I did like Hodges but I really felt that the relationships between the characters were unrealistic. Dialogue was also an issue for me, as were certain historical notes - for example how many teenagers today are aware of party lines on telephones in the past and would reference this? 🤷🏼‍♀️ #xmastree #puremi

Only one disaster putting together the brine for the turkey while #audiocooking... Gross. moving on to the next book.

Can't really decide what I think of this series. So far, it's a pretty good retired cop thriller, if formulaic, but that was pretty unexpected from Stephen King. Any one else read this series? Right now it feels like a 2-book lead up to a more traditionally Stephen King paranormal horror story.
