1984 | George Orwell
Mehso-so

Finished this book a couple days ago. I wasn‘t overwhelmed to be honest. And it could be because I set the bar too high. Orwell discusses the same concept with Animal Farm, wherein there‘s always a higher and lower society and that history always ends up “changing”. If you ask me, both are similar and unique in a way. But #animalfarm is still my favorite.

rretzler Interesting take. I read both books many years ago, and 1984 was one of my favorites. I always felt that Animal Farm was Orwell's commentary on the politics of that time (more specifically the Russian revolution,) while 1984, having some similarities, was his take on where he felt the future might be going. I have found it prophetic in many ways over the years as we sacrifice personal freedom for “protection“, especially as technology is developed 3w
vumblereads @rretzler Yes I think that‘s a big discussion revolving around the book. I guess I should give it more credit knowing that it was written earlier than it was 1984. When Winston, the main character, started reading Goldstein‘s book, it reminded me so much of Animal Farm. 🙂 3w
gilroyc I always felt that 1984 was a touch more subtle than Animal Farm. 3w
See All 6 Comments
vumblereads Subtle in what way @gilroyc ? 🙂 3w
gilroyc Personal opinion: Animal Farm is a steady dropping of bricks as the pigs are constantly betraying their original thoughts. 1984 has more of a thriller feel with when and how, so the bricks are slid in, rather than dropped. 3w
vumblereads @gilroyc 😂 yes they‘re always changing their opinions and everyone else is dumb enough to believe it, but it‘s just like in 1984! One minute they‘re at war with Eurasia, the next they‘re at war with Eastasia and they were never ever at war with eurasia 🤷🏻‍♀️ I get it George Orwell, people lied to you! 😅 3w

I‘m really struggling with 1984. It picks up and then it drags, on and off. Currently at 54%. I‘m debating whether I should DNF and watch the movie.

Jeralyn I was the same way, but I had to read it for school so I stuck it out. I cannot tell you how mind-blowing the ending is, I literally can't. There's this point in the novel where it tells you everything, things that you didn't even know you were confused about. I would say it's worth the read even though most of it seemed pointlessly sad to me, if you get to the end you will understand why this book is at such a high standing. 4w
vumblereads @Jeralyn and that‘s really the only reason why it keeps me going, otherwise I would‘ve given up 😅 4w
Jeralyn After 1984 it was like I understood the world for once and everything made sense. I would say that after all the hype I'm giving it, it's still not one of my favorite books at all, but I definitely think it's one of those books everyone should read. I think that maybe if everyone read it and understood it, the world would change for the better, as long as it's not too far gone that is. 4w

Still reading Eggs by Jerry Spinelli. I‘m wondering whether or not I should start posting my reviews here on Litsy instead of Goodreads. Do you guys use both apps? Which app do you prefer to write reviews on? #litsyvsgoodreads #bookreviews

lahousewyfe I use both apps and just copy my Litsy review to my Goodreads account. 2mo
mreads I use both, I write here and usually just star there. A brief synopsis and casual opinion here works better for my style. 2mo
Jemgirl2014 I'm primarily here. I just use goodreads for updating my reading challenge. 1mo

Suet624 I just use Goodreads for the reading challenge. 1mo
rretzler I use LibraryThing, Goodreads and Litsy. Litsy is easier to post quick reviews, but I attempt to get them in all 3 places (using the same review for LT and GR) Always a star rating on LT and GR at a minimum (edited) 1mo
bookishbitch I only post here and on Instagram. I used to do goodreads but stopped. This is easier and more fun for me. Plus it annoys me that goodreads and Amazon are linked. I can't articulate why. It just feels invasive. 1mo
Naj I post reviews only here. Goodreads is just for tracking my reading. 1mo
vumblereads @lahousewyfe I might do that too. The only bad thing about Litsy is that the characters are limited for reviews. 1mo
vumblereads @mreads yes I don‘t always feel like I have to write a full on review. 1mo
vumblereads @suet624 Litsy and Goodreads should combine into one app 😂 there are a couple things I like on goodreads that I can‘t find here on Litsy 1mo
vumblereads @jemgirl2014 yes the reading challenge always draws people back to goodreads 1mo
vumblereads @rretzler I‘ve heard library thing is pretty good too. 1mo
vumblereads @bookishbitch I understand. I personally don‘t find it invasive, but somehow I can‘t escape Amazon and Goodreads since I‘m a kindle user 😂 I eventually got used to my review being here and there and the cookies too. Those terrible cookies. 1mo
vumblereads @naj I would understand why you‘d post reviews here. People are more receptive here than goodreads. 1mo
rretzler IMO LibraryThing is better than Goodreads. Like GR, LT has groups that you can belong to. Some of them, like the 75 Books Challenge, are longstanding and the members of the group are a very welcoming and friendly community. I‘ve tried some of the groups on GR and to me it seems that no one really cares about getting to know you. Plus even though the selection of giveaway books is smaller on LT, it is much easier to get one than on GR. 1mo
Naj @vumblereads Yes, Litsy is a smaller community. More cozy! 1mo
vumblereads @rretzler interesting. I‘ve been joining these giveaways on goodreads since I don‘t know how long and never won a book 😂 and yes I agree with the goodreads community not being warm and friendly. Some of them are even high brow and judgmental IMO, they need to chill out. I might check out library thing one if these days. I know there‘s a way to transfer data without manually putting your books in one by one. 1mo
rretzler I had probably signed up for GR before LT, and I do use both sites daily, but the only reasons I can think of to say why I use GR is because of its year end reading summary graphic and book challenge graphic and because the star ratings of reviews are very slightly better aligned with my star ratings. 1mo
rretzler Sorry, last post and then I‘ll stop. 🤣 Plus Litsy is owned by LT and the LT founder and staff are very approachable. They care and listen to the community and make changes to both platforms based on user feedback. (Not all changes anyone wants, but they do listen). No way that would happen on GR! 😀 Just my thoughts - sorry I rambled! 1mo
vumblereads Oh yes. And I do enjoy looking at my reading stats - tables and graphs of the books you‘ve read. I‘m a fool for graphs and charts 😂 makes me feel smart. My most favorite one is the chart by publication year. The oldest book I‘ve read I think was published in the 30s. 1mo
vumblereads @rretzler 😂 oh you‘re totally fine. Like I mentioned before, this is what I like about Litsy because the community is so receptive. And yes goodreads staff are pretty strict about features to add. I haven‘t gotten over GR getting rid of the MOST READ AUTHORS feature. 1mo
rretzler I didn‘t know that feature was gone. ☹️ I‘m certain that there is a way to do it on LT if you do decide to join. If you have questions about how things work, the members are always happy to help and @lorannen is wonderful at answering questions. And yes, I believe there is a way to export from GR and then import into LT. The other thing about LT that I like is it supports both “shelves”, called collections, and tags. Both are customizable 1mo
Suet624 I‘m in agreement with @bookishbitch I‘m not happy that Amazon owns Goodreads and I stay completely away from Amazon. So I‘d hate to see Litsy be associated with Goodreads. 1mo
Jemgirl2014 @vumblereads True! It's a pretty cool feature. 🙂 1mo
The_Real_Nani I haven‘t gone so far as to delete my GR account but I don‘t use it anymore. I prefer Litsy because it‘s less overwhelming and not so busy! 1mo

Pickpick

I just finished Arrows of the Queen, the first book of the Arrows Trilogy. This was Mercedes Lackey‘s debut novel and the first of many more books to come. The book has more world building in my opinion than storyline which was completely fine with me. Perhaps the author‘s intent was to set up the reader for the many books to come. Overall a great read! This has now become one of my favorite books of 2019. #80sfantasy #heraldsofvaldemar #talia

Now reading page 165.

I‘m trying to understand what Talia‘s real “gift” or powers are. I‘m underwhelmed by what she can do especially considering that she‘s the STAR of the book. 🤷🏻‍♀️

#heralds #valdemar #collegium

Leniverse It's the classical YA heroine thing, even though this was written before YA was a genre (and the series contains some adult scenes that might need trigger warnings). She's been underestimated by everyone including herself all her short life, and her Gift is a rare one, so even the Heralds don't know what to make of her at first. She'll come into her own. But it's a trilogy, so you need to be patient with the journey. 🙂 2mo

Arrows of the Queen | Mercedes Lackey

So far so good! Can‘t believe this book has negative reviews. And I can‘t believe a ya book published in 1985 has LGBTQ themes. #highfantasy #lgbtq #ya #yafantasy #horses

Tonton Welcome😎 2mo
Leniverse Yes, Lackey had LGBTQ+ heroes and heroines way back in day. Female fantasy and sci-fi writers have always had them, I think. 2mo

vumblereads @Leniverse and here I thought LGBTQ just started to hit off in YA books. I‘m now pushing myself to read more diverse books including those published earlier. I‘ve always stuck to one genre before but learning all this makes me want to explore and diversify my reading. 2mo
The_Real_Nani Sandra Scoppettone was writing LGBTQ+ YA in the late 70s. :) 1mo
vumblereads @The_Real_Nani good to know! Thank you! 🙂 1mo

Arrows of the Queen | Mercedes Lackey

Would you consider Arrows of the Queen as a high fantasy book? Just wondering.....
#highfantasy #mercedeslackey #ya

sudi Hi, Welcome To Litsy🙋 Going to add you on Insta. 2mo
vumblereads Sure no problem! 2mo
rretzler Hi! I haven‘t read it, so I looked it up on Worlds Without End, which is a fantastic website for Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror books (more cataloging than discussing but it has great challenges.) WWE lists it as Fairytale Fantasy or Juvenile Fantasy - that doesn‘t mean it‘s not High Fantasy, but WWE doesn‘t list it that way. If you‘re asking because of a challenge, I‘d go for it and count it as High Fantasy, if you think it has those elements! 2mo

vumblereads Oh thank you for replying @rretzler ! It‘s not a part of a challenge. My coworker and I were discussing genres and sub genres last night and now I can‘t help but over analyze every book I read 😂 I haven‘t done any challenges yet, I‘m one of those moody readers and I can‘t possibly follow someone‘s guide on what to read next. The only challenge I‘ve done so far is the Goodreads challenge 😂 2mo
vumblereads @rretzler and thank you for the website recommendation, I will surely check it out. I‘m learning so many new things here on Litsy! 2mo
UwannaPublishme Welcome to Litsy! 😊🙌🏻📚📚 2mo
rretzler I know exactly what you mean. I have a unique way of approaching challenges - I read whatever I want and then I see if it falls within the challenges I may be interested in. I‘ve been in the Popsugar and ReadHarder Challenges for a couple of years and I know I won‘t complete them - it‘s just interesting to me to see how I line up with them. For instance this year I‘ve already read 9/24 from ReadHarder and that‘s probably all I‘ll actually get. 😜 2mo
rretzler And you‘re welcome for the WWE recommendation- it‘s a go-to site for me (edited) 2mo
vumblereads @rretzler that‘s true. I‘m currently aiming to read 100 books, and it‘s probably not going to happen unless I read children‘s books or poetry books 😅 but ever since I started listening to audiobooks, I‘ve been finishing books faster lately so there might be a chance that I can reach 100 books this year. 2mo
kgriffith I think of it as high fantasy because the world it exists in isn‘t ours, is built out quite extensively, and it has magical history and legacies. I think a book can be both YA and high fantasy or hard sci fi 🤓 I also hit 100 for the first time last year, and probably 80 of them were audiobooks! They make a huge difference for me, because I spend so much time in the car. 2mo
vumblereads Yes audiobooks definitely help. I stumbled upon a video critic on YouTube about how booktubers were reading too much and how reading 5 books a week was unbelievable. But with a growing market for audiobooks and graphic novels, it can‘t be helped if people get to read 5 or more books in one week. I‘m definitely reading or listening more and I spend lesser time watching tv. 2mo
vumblereads @kgriffith A YA hard sci fi would be an interesting read! Any recommendations? 2mo
kgriffith @vumblereads I'll drop some specific recs after work but in the meantime, here's a tagmash from LibraryThing with the top titles tagged both YA and Hard Sci-fi, many of which I've read and loved: https://www.librarything.com/tag/YA,+hard+sf 2mo

#currentlyreading Mercedes Lackey‘s The Complete Arrows Trilogy. Someone had told me this was a fast read, but I‘m really just falling fast asleep on this one. First 3 pages and I‘m already dozing off. Has anyone read this and have you felt the same way about it? #sleepingaid #fantasybooks #arrowstrilogy #youngadult #fantasy #feminism

Homes: A Refugee Story | Abu Bakr al Rabeeah, Winnie Yeung
Pickpick

I have a profound respect for Abu Bakr‘s father who DID ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING he could to keep the family together and bring everyone to safety. His father to me is a HERO.

I‘m glad that there are people like Ms Yeung, Ms Mayer and Ms Maggie who help people settle in and adjust. These kind hearted people who volunteer and take their time to help are truly the gentle warriors of humankind.
