Kafka on the Shore
Kafka on the Shore | Haruki Murakami
Kafka on the Shore is powered by two remarkable characters: a teenage boy, Kafka Tamura, who runs away from home either to escape a gruesome oedipal prophecy or to search for his long-missing mother and sister; and an aging simpleton called Nakata, who never recovered from a wartime affliction and now is drawn toward Kafka for reasons that, like the most basic activities of daily life, he cannot fathom. As their paths converge, and the reasons for that convergence become clear, Haruki Murakami enfolds readers in a world where cats talk, fish fall from the sky, and spirits slip out of their bodies to make love or commit murder. Kafka on the Shore displays one of the world’s great storytellers at the peak of his powers. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I might be lying if I said I understood this book completely, but I still loved it nonetheless. Weaving seemingly separate lives and characters into one tale, I would definitely recommend this to any murakami fans if you haven‘t already read it.

This surrealist novel tells the story of a teenager who has run away from home, and an old man who can talk to cats, and how their lives converge. I really enjoyed it, though not sure why I have ended up with several recent reads that have a strong Oedipal storyline?

Lots to like, the magic realism and atmosphere, but Jesus I just can‘t anymore with the sex stuff. Writing about sex workers so awful I skipped almost the whole chapter, one sex scene with consent so dodgy I skipped through as well, creepy lists of women characters have fucked dropped in with nothin to do with the plot, Oedipal shit I don‘t want to know in that much detail. Lots I liked but I can‘t give it a soso when I hated bits that much

It‘s a bit of an odd weekend for me as I‘m travelling but I‘ll definitely be able to make a dent in the readathon as I have an 11 hour flight 😱😱😱 London to Austin Texas on Saturday! So I should be reading a lot Friday as I rest before the flight and then pretty solidly on the flight, but hopefully on Sunday I‘ll be too busy to read. I won‘t be able to post from the flight but I‘ll be taking part!

I adore Kafka‘s magic realism so much I always come back to it and am excited to read another one! His women and writing about sex grate with me and get harder and harder to read with time, so I‘ll probably end up skipping some weird psychic sex scenes (idk the plot but I‘ll eat my hat if there aren‘t any) to get back to enjoying the prose and the bizarre worlds he makes seem so real

Emilymdxn I KNEW IT WOULD HAPPEN. 50 minutes in he‘s got a raging erecting talking to a girl on the bus who he has a suspicion may be his long lost sister. 4mo

Buechersuechtling I read it in my “Murakami”-phase (which is about 20 years ago). I remember only parts of it but I think that overall I liked it. “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle” I read after that was not for me. The surreal parts were too much for me. I didn‘t understand why they are needed and bailed the book. – Maybe I should lookout for the audiobook … 4mo

I loved the language used throughout the book and both the parallel stories in the book were interesting and the use of metaphysics, while at times forced, mostly worked for me. But, one aspect of the book that didn't work for me was the non-linear narrative style, it felt pretty distracting, mainly because of the short individual chapter length, the abrupt end of most chapters and the abrupt switching between the parallel plotlines.

The metaphysical quality of the book propels you through what can only be the author‘s own musings and unique ways of expressing fundamental truths of the human experience. This book makes me wonder where magic can be found in our world.

Murakami is a writer, whose blurb on the back cover is always more enjoyable than the book itself.

KAFKA ON THE SHORE, a novel with murakami‘s signature plot- where the lives of two characters intertwine eachother, is a ambitious work of authorial laziness.
Nakata and even hoshino were far more interesting charecters than kafka tamura and miss sinae, whose Incest-induced sex scenes troubled me more than the outstretched flirtation with eel.

This book was exceptional. I particularly enjoyed the depth of character development. Murakami didn‘t rush through the plot. He allowed each character to have a rich inner monologue that I found incredibly refreshing. I took my time reading this book, and even though it was long, I could have read a hundred more pages and still not been bored by it.

One word of caution: there is an incredibly violent scene in this book involving animal brutality.

Silence, I discover, is something you can actually hear. Everytime i try to like murakami, somehow, he manages to kick me out. Not a bad read, but like murakami‘s other works, some of the scenes surrounding sex, aren‘t even relevant and necessary to the plot.

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around this one. The story itself was very interesting and inventive, and it kept my interest, but at the same time, I didn't love it and parts of it felt like the story was droning on and didn't need to be included. But, I'm glad I read it, as it's listed on the #apliterature book list, and I've heard a lot of people talking about it.

#2019 reading goals

Well, my eyes are slowly getting better. All tests and MRI came back normal, so Dr.‘s think it‘s an extreme dry eye flare up caused by overexertion and dry weather/CA smoke. Dry eye is very common, but this severe of a flare up is rare.

Still on steroid drops and limiting computer and reading time. It will be a few more weeks until fully healed. Going forward, I need to use eyedrops daily and take lots of breaks. Crazy!

YouReadMyEyes Thanks everyone for your support through all of this! I had no idea that dry eyes could get this severe and cause partial vision loss, etc. I encourage everyone to use eye drops and take lots of breaks when reading or on the computer. (edited) 7mo
GingerAntics Oh you‘ve had a lot of smoke in the air lately, too. That can‘t be good for the eyes either. So glad it‘s nothing permanent or something that can‘t be treated. Hope all the eye drops help quickly. Life without reading would have been torture. So excited you‘re getting better. 💙💙💙 7mo

According to Aristophanes in Plato's The Banquet, in the ancient world of legend there were three types of people.
People weren't simply male or female, but one of three types : male/male, male/female or female/female. ... But then God took a knife and cut everyone in half, right down the middle. After that the world was divided just into male and female, the upshot being, people spend their time running around trying to locate their missing half.

I loved this so much! There is a lot to enjoy on the surface, but there is also so much depth to explore. Murakami blurs the lines between dreams and reality, fate and choice, and while he uses classical references they are a little blurry and not note for note either. I'll be processing this one for a while and will probably need to read it again.
