The Greatest Gift: A Christmas Tale | Philip Van Doren Stern
post image

The tagged book is a short story published in 1943 that was the basis of the film It‘s A #WonderfulLife. George Pratt is dissatisfied with life, to the point where he feels it would have been better if he had never been born. He has a few #Surprises when he is shown what would have happened if that had been the case

#RedRoseSeptember
A #twofer post to get me caught up.
There is a #BizarreLoveTriangle in this book when widowed mommy blogger Stephanie makes a new friend Emily & then falls for Emily‘s husband Sean after she goes missing. (There‘s also another crazy ick-ish triangle from Stephanie‘s past too.) All three characters do things in this book that are more than #GroundsForDivorce 🖤 I liked the movie much more than the book due to the casting/acting.

arlenefinnigan Loving the double link. Excellent work. 4d

Ah some of these women were so unlikeable! It made me not want to pick up the book sometimes. I liked the second half of the book better than the first. I found Young Ursele and Irene so awful. Veronica was my favorite. I also didn‘t expect the final years to be set during WWII. That was interesting.

#Booked2019 - gifted to you (got in #witchplease Swap last year)
#readingwomenchallenge - multigenerational story

Oh yeah, I am behind again this week.😬Just trying to survive until the 3-day weekend. Pardon me, I‘m going to cheat & do 2 prompts to catch up. The male lead in this romance is a #Star on the heroine‘s favorite tv series when they meet cute at college. When she thinks he wronged her & made her GPA suffer & they meet again years later, she isn‘t too willing to forgive him & feels she doesn‘t want to give him #AllOfMyHeart...at first.💛

squirrelbrain Well done on the #doubledip ! Sorry for stealing your hashtag @Cinfhen ! 🤣 3w

The Map of Salt and Stars: A Novel | Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar
post image

Not read but found this fitting for #ayupaugust #star and #LetsTravelAugust

The novel tells the story of a family on their journey from their home in #Syria to safety in another country, through the eyes of Nour, the youngest daughter. The story moves between two narratives - an account of a Syrian refugee and a medieval tale of a mapmaker‘s assistant.

It took Lizzie and Darcy quite a long time to decide #IsThisLove. Lizzie is definitely one of my favourite heroines, sparky, witty, strong-willed, definitely full of #ZealousZest!

#Stop ! #IPredictARiot ! Or, at least that‘s the feeling among the Russian people in the early 1900s. When the Romanov dynasty falls after hundreds of years of rule, a revolution is the cause. Rappaport tells the history of this turmoil through the eyes of foreign visitors, who witness firsthand the revolution and the dangers they now face. #ayupaugust

Henreich Böll is a gifted writer, there is no doubt about that. I enjoyed this more from the historical perspective and context of its publishing. A posthumous publication, German publishers were not ready to publish a novel set in the days immediately following Capitulation, when this was written in the late 40‘s. The storyline was very unstructured which made it hard to follow at times.

#MountTBR

4thhouseontheleft Many of the scenes are set in various locations in a Catholic Church and hospital, so I‘m counting this for #pop19 : set in abbey, cloister, monastery, vicarage or convent. Nuns and priests factor in heavily in the story. This was the popsugar prompt I had no idea what I was going to read for it, so 🎉🎉🎉🎉. 2mo
4thhouseontheleft This is also a perfect fit for the fall #booked2019 prompt #soldiersstory 🎉🎉 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage since the main character is Hans, who deserted the Nazi Army and his struggles surviving without being punished as a deserter, even after the war ends. 2mo

I‘m recommending this book for those of you who like complicated plots and/or stories set in an otherwise “hidden” society, i.e., North Korea. This is the 2nd book in the “Inspector O” series. James Church (a pseudonym) has extensive intelligence experience in Asia, and N. Korea in particular. Such an oppressive society rarely has this kind of light shined on it—only realize that the light is probably a 60s-era low-battery-operated ⬇️

An added complication is that Inspector O is only allowed to see what the leadership shows him. Not to mention, O has to figure out what the higher-ups actually want to happen. As he says, there are cases we investigate to solve, cases we investigate only to look like we‘re solving, and there are cases we bin. O has to surmise which is the desired ⬇️ 4mo
gradcat ⬆️ result—never an easy task, and never a given. By the way, this post is double-tasking: for #Booked2019 & the #NightOrientedTitle prompt, + #MayMovieMagic & #TheMoonSong . As this is Day 31, we come to the end of another month—sorry to see it end. It was a fun month of prompts—many thanks (again!) to @Cinfhen & @rohit-sawant for hosting a very good time! ♥️🥰👋 (edited) 4mo

gradcat @rohit-sawant I had great fun, and I hope to see you “wandering in June!” 😂 Oh, and thanks for your comments on my review (I almost forgot!). (edited) 4mo
gradcat @Cinfhen Thanks—I‘m glad you caught it. The others of your cohort haven‘t checked in, so I feared I had “buried the lede” a bit by putting the tags so low in the post. Thanks for reading all the way to the end (you must think me very wordy on these reviews, alas)! 😘 Gosh, I‘m so rude—thanks for thinking of me & my health (I‘m almost forgot to tell you that!) ♥️ (edited) 4mo
gradcat @Cinfhen By the way, still haven‘t heard from the rest of the #Booked2019 crew...did you all get that this was part of the Spring prompts? Maybe I shouldn‘t have done it this way? I know you‘re very busy, but if you have a spare minute, could you just reassure me about this? Thanks! 🥰♥️😊 4mo
Cinfhen Sorry, life gets busy but we got it👍🏻 4mo
