Taking a break from the hard hitting Maslin memoir, to enjoy listening to the first Octavia Butler novel I ever read. My first time round I read on ebook, this time on audio. Quite enjoying the audio, although if I was not already familiar with the plot and names, it might be a bit tough to keep straight #octaviabutler #dawn #xenogenesis #lilithsbrood

ShyBookOwl This would be interesting on audio because I've read the book twice and I'm not sure I pronounce the names correctly in my head lol 7mo
CuriousG @shybookowl It was definitely interesting getting to hear how the names were pronounced, but I feel like the narrator was guessing a bit too. I would have had difficulty with this book on audio if I hadn't physically read it years ago. 7mo
ShyBookOwl @CuriousG ooooh. That makes sense. I'm curious about it though. 7mo

Weaponxgirl I still haven‘t read anything by her and it fills me with shame! 10mo
KathyWheeler @Weaponxgirl A good place to start, in my opinion, is Kindred. It‘s very accessible and is not part of a series or trilogy. 10mo
Weaponxgirl @KathyWheeler thanks. I do own that but I started it when I wasn‘t in good headspace for the content but I will try again at some point as I know that if I hit in the right mood I‘m going to love. 10mo

suzisteffen @Weaponxgirl @KathyWheeler I think Parable of the Sower is a good start without the time travel component. But yes, Kindred is rightly famous. The Xenogensis series is intense about bodily integrity and family ties and species ties in ways that the Parable books aren‘t. 10mo
Weaponxgirl I‘ve heard good things about all her books so really need to push myself to get at them. 10mo
KathyWheeler @suzisteffen It probably is — I don‘t always want to get started on a series though as my introduction to an author, which is why I recommended Kindred as a good place to begin. 10mo
suzisteffen @KathyWheeler good point!! 10mo
Weaponxgirl I reckon that could be fun! @TheNextBook is doing #readblackwomen next month so would be a perfect time to read one. I‘ve already been working on my reading list for the month. I already own kindred and might be the push I need to read it. 10mo
suzisteffen @Weaponxgirl tbh I had Kindred in print for like a decade before I saw it available as a library ebook and read it that way last November, so I UNDERSTAND. 😂 (and it‘s great! WTF was I doing?!) 10mo
Weaponxgirl @suzisteffen I‘m going to assume it‘s something similar to what I do when I leave a book for the perfect moment of reading. It‘s a bad habit I have 10mo
suzisteffen @Weaponxgirl Yeah! That‘s it. 😂 10mo

Parable of the Talents | Octavia E. Butler

Octavia Butler obviously had a crystal ball when she wrote this book in 1998. Not to mention a keen sense of history‘s potential to repeat itself. That last stanza, especially just punches me in the gut.

BarbaraJean I‘ve been having trouble reading this one lately because it‘s just too prescient. 1y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BarbaraJean I‘m finding it upsetting and nerve wracking also. But I still want to finish it. 1y

BarbaraTheBibliophage We posted the same quote @Riveted_Reader_Melissa —this one really got me too! 1y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraJean Yes! That exactly! 1y
BarbaraJean @Riveted_Reader_Melissa And it‘s gotten more upsetting in the subsequent chapters since I made that comment!! I‘m appreciating the reading schedule, as it helps me parcel it out in more emotionally-manageable chunks. 1y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BarbaraJean I felt that way for Sower. But I ended up having to power through the end of Talents, just so I could finish. 1y

Parable of the Sower | Octavia E. Butler

I really wanted to like this book. I did. But it bored me. I didn‘t make it past the fifth chapter and by then I was already well into another read and just never came back to it. I do have every intention on finishing it by the end of July but Unless it gets better I just won‘t be reading the next in the series! #octaviabutler #buddyreads #parableofsower #earthseed
