From the author of the classic A Little Life, a bold, brilliant novel spanning three centuries and three different versions of the American experiment, about lovers, family, loss and the elusive promise of utopia. In an alternate version of 1893 America, New York is part of the Free States, where people may live and love whomever they please (or so it seems). The fragile young scion of a distinguished family resists betrothal to a worthy suitor, drawn to a charming music teacher of no means. In a 1993 Manhattan besieged by the AIDS epidemic, a young Hawaiian man lives with his much older, wealthier partner, hiding his troubled childhood and the fate of his father. And in 2093, in a world riven by plagues and governed by totalitarian rule, a powerful scientist's damaged granddaughter tries to navigate life without him - and solve the mystery of her husband's disappearances. These three sections are joined in an enthralling and ingenious symphony, as recurring notes and themes deepen and enrich one another: A townhouse in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village; illness, and treatments that come at a terrible cost; wealth and squalor; the weak and the strong; race; the definition of family, and of nationhood; the dangerous righteousness of the powerful, and of revolutionaries; the longing to find a place in an earthly paradise, and the gradual realization that it can't exist. What unites not just the characters, but these Americas, are their reckonings with the qualities that make us human: Fear. Love. Shame. Need. Loneliness. To Paradise is a fin de siecle novel of marvelous literary effect, but above all it is a work of emotional genius. The great power of this remarkable novel is driven by Hanya Yanagihara's understanding of the aching desire to protect those we love - partners, lovers, children, friends, family and even our fellow citizens - and the pain that ensues when we cannot.

Ok. So I finished. And need some time to sit with it. But this is one of the passages that had me pulling out the small sticky notes.

A book arrives and for the next few weeks, it consumes your life. A book arrives and for the next few weeks all you can think about is that book. A book arrives and for the next few weeks the only companion for your first as well as your tenth cup of coffee is that book. Hanya Yanagihara's TO PARADISE is one such book ❤️ (continued in comments)

nathandrake1997 ....Divided into three books, each book talks about the elusive quest of reaching "paradise" and how the word can change meaning pertaining to the subjective lenses of each and every person's perception of the world around them.... 2d
nathandrake1997 ....The prose here feels more subtle and understated than Yanagihara's previous novel A LITTLE LIFE, but is nevertheless equally, if not more, heartbreaking.... 2d
nathandrake1997 ....There were moments when I had to take a break because of how heavy the book felt, there were moments where I had held my breath for so long that I had to let out a gasp, there were moments when I was contemplating about dnf'ing the book because of how real and relatable it felt.... 2d

nathandrake1997 ....Overall, Hanya Yanagihara's TO PARADISE is absolutely stunning ❤️ It has its flaws, the prose can feel a bit too convoluted at times, some sequences feel rushed while on the other hand, some sequences feel drawn out. But, this is one of those rare books where the flaws add to the reading experience instead of detracting from it, it makes the book feel more.....human ❤️ 2d
TrishB Great review 👍🏻 2d

Things that will make me think of this book: squirrels, chocolate, pandemic news, people named David, Edward, and Charlie, insurgents, talks of personal freedom, gay parents, gay relationships, Hawaii, New York City, the ongoing erasure and rewriting of history, friendship, people calling their old kids baby, peaches, the inability to make correct decisions based on the data available, bears, space suits. So much to discuss in this book. So good.

squirrelbrain Great review Reggie. My thoughts are a lot more muddled than yours! 3d
Reggie Actually I‘m gonna put some of my thoughts down under spoilers if you want to check them out. 3d
Reggie I think all the David‘s minus the son in book 2 suffered from some type of mental illness. In book 1 I understood David‘s decision. 1 time I dated this guy 40 years older than me(long story) who kept telling me not to tell people I was gay because it would hurt me in the end. All the while promising to take me on all these trips. When asked who I would be on these trips, he said his grandson. I thought about all the mistakes I could be making on 3d
See All 17 Comments
Reggie my own with someone else my own age and not follow some map that someone older had made for me but might not even be the right map but one he alone had made. And I understood David but of course I don‘t agree with his choice. And I think he was killed by Edward and and Aubrey after they found his gold, or they let him stay and he was cuckholded and retreated back into his own mind while he watched them be a couple in the West. Sidenote- I love 3d
Reggie the tease of an ending to this book Hanya gives us in the 3rd where she has the storyteller tell us book 1 right up to the end and then he doesn‘t show ever again. Lololol Book 2, I loved young David‘s story about friendship and the courage it takes to be there for someone in the end. His father‘s story I found felt the longest, until, my personal theory is that he isn‘t really getting up and walking around but that it is his soul trying to leave 3d
Reggie his body. And book 3-the ending. I think Charlie is captured and is either killed or held prisoner. In the previous books all the Edwards are part of a David‘s demise. In this book it is because she tells Edward‘s dead body her plans not knowing that there is a listening device because why wouldn‘t there be if both her and Edward were marked as relatives of political enemies. I‘m sorry I‘m such a Debbie Downer but her themes of what looks like 3d
Reggie freedom is actually another form of a cage is kinda consistent throughout the book. Idk. Tell me I‘m crazy. I liked it a lot and will think about it quite a bit. 3d
Reggie Thanks, Helen. @squirrelbrain 3d
TrishB Great thoughts Reggie! I‘m sticking to Charlie got away at the end. And we can escape the cages. I don‘t usually focus on the positive, but I‘m choosing this one. 3d
Reggie @TrishB Thanks! ❤️ 3d
erzascarletbookgasm Intriguing review. Makes me want to read this even more! 3d
Reggie @erzascarletbookgasm @BarbaraBB @youneverarrived I hope you all read it. Because like Fleishman is in Trouble I could see us all having different opinions and interpretations. 3d
BarbaraBB We did. And I didn‘t like Fleishman 😉 3d
Chelsea.Poole I love your review. I‘m currently reading this sloooowwwly and I haven‘t encountered all of these things yet, but look forward to it. 3d
Reggie @Chelsea.Poole Thanks! I thought of one of the characters from the third book all day today. I hope you enjoy it. 2d

When I initially finished this book, I thought how fucking bleak, but I noticed as I finished each section throughout the week, I‘d find a bit of hope the next day. Call me a crazy optimist (some people have), but I do believe that the moral arc of the universe goes towards good (or justice as Dr. King said), and even though that may not have been the author‘s intention, that is what I choose to believe. Godspeed David and Charlie!

BarbaraBB Wow. What a wonderful review. 4d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB thank you. 🥰 very interested in your thoughts when you read it! 4d

riversong153 I‘ve never read anything by this author. I‘ve heard they write notoriously depressing books. I don‘t think I could handle it. 3d
Cathythoughts I love your review 👍🏻❤️ I‘m looking forward to reading this one 3d
squirrelbrain Fab review @Megabooks - looking forward to discussing further… 3d
TrishB Great review. I agree there was a lot more hope in this than ALL. I thought it was more of a warning? See what happens when we trample on peoples human rights. But it has endless interpretations. She is a very clever author. 3d
Megabooks @riversong153 yeah, I like emotional books *when I can handle them* 3d
Megabooks @Cathythoughts I can‘t wait to discuss it with you! 3d
Megabooks @squirrelbrain thanks! Did you see the convo I had with @reggie on my last post about this book? 3d
Megabooks @TrishB just started ALL! I can agree it‘s a warning, especially in regards to Charles in book 3 and how he was the architect of his own doom. 3d
youneverarrived Brilliant review! I bought it when it first came out but I‘m building up to actually starting it 😆 (edited) 3d
squirrelbrain Yes, I saw that @Megabooks - all very interesting and fascinating to see different viewpoints and opinions. 3d
Megabooks @youneverarrived thank you! I think you will enjoy it, but it is a long, emotional, thoughtful book, so probably best when you have the mental space/time for it! 3d

This book is like a winter sunset: bleak but really beautiful. I am still processing my thoughts and feelings, now that I‘ve finished, but it really brought out a lot of emotions.

Finishing To Paradise was my only goal for #JoyousJanuary so ✅ @Andrew65

TrishB Lovely first thoughts ❤️ 4d
AmyG It definitely has me thinking. I am loving book 3…it‘s fascinating reading about future NYC. 4d
BarbaraBB So special when a book leads to so many feelings. Also I love the photo 🥰 4d
See All 29 Comments
Megabooks @TrishB thanks 💜 4d
Megabooks @AmyG it was a bit scary to me, tbh! 4d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB truth 🙌🏻 and thank you 🥰 that means a lot coming from you! 💜 4d
Reggie Ok just real quick because I just NOW finished it. Charlie dies. All the Edwards were always gonna be the demise of the Davids and Charlies. Indirectly in part 3 because when Charlie decided to tell his dead body what she was doing and where she was going she didn‘t realize a listening device had been planted in her apartment because they were both relatives of “terrorists.” So people knew where she was going and gonna be. Am I wrong? 4d
Megabooks @Reggie wow…I did not interpret it that way at all. I had hope that the boat that found Charlie was from new Britain and that David meeting Edward in part one was just a creation of the author in part three who died but leaving it open in the square, the only place of hope in new York in the future. Maybe I‘m just an optimist??? 4d
Megabooks @Reggie part two was a downer but David found peace with his husband in the future according to the narrative. The future in each section was not necessarily related in my opinion. 4d
Reggie I think in part one, David left for the West with Edward, and once Edward and Aubrey found his gold they killed him and his body rotted somewhere. In the second book, the David who chose Charles I think had a happy life but the father, David, who followed Edward totally just fell to pieces inside. All 3 David‘s minus the son David in the 2nd book had mental health issues, right? Also, the Dad/David from the 2nd book, he‘s not really walking around 4d
Reggie right, that‘s his soul trying to find a way to leave his body. And I‘m glad you‘re an optimist Meg. My optimism comes from the knowledge that I will probably be dead before book 3 comes to pass if it does 🤞🏼. Lol this book was beautiful. I really enjoyed it 4d
Megabooks @Reggie wow just wow! Interesting how we can see such different things! While I hope I don‘t live to see a nation like that America come to pass, I don‘t necessarily think it is a foregone conclusion it will. I will fight that it doesn‘t come to pass. I will not go quietly and while I can see your interpretation as valid, I do not agree with it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think the positive of the David in part 2 of book 2 is that his son made it to nyc, he surviv 4d
Megabooks @Reggie survived hiv to marry and die old (cannon). There is hope for me. We can agree to disagree! 4d
Reggie Lol, I know, Meg, I‘m so sorry I‘m being such a Debbie Downer and this is exactly what I thought about this book. That whatever I thought there will be many different observations and thoughts by everyone who reads it. 4d
TrishB @Megabooks @Reggie I love both your comments! 3d
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 3d
Megabooks @TrishB I definitely found our conversation enlightening! I love different points of view @Reggie 👍🏻 3d
AmyG Ha @Reggie don‘t know if Edward killed David in Book 1. I just thought....how much did David (Book 1) want a “perfect” life that he was willing to overlook reality? Same with Hawaii David (dad). 3d
AmyG Ha @Reggie don‘t know if Edward killed David in Book 1. I just thought....how much did David (Book 1) want a “perfect” life that he was willing to overlook reality? Same with Hawaii David (dad). @Megabooks I agree about NYC David Book 2. He seemd to have escaped.....yet his life worked out. BUT....his partner was a Charles, not an Edward. (edited) 3d
Megabooks @AmyG @Reggie I can see that whole Edward/David vs Charles/David dynamic, but where does that leave girl Charlie and the David who came to rescue her?? Her father David died and so did Nathaniel at his hands, but that seems to mess up the whole Charles/David/Edward dynamic in my mind, especially since there was no romantic relationship on that axis but if that is true then wouldn‘t my belief that Charlie is rescued by David hold some water??? 🤔🤔 3d
AmyG @Megabooks I am still on book 3….but sometimes I just wonder if the books have nothing to do with each other at all. Ha…maybe the author is just messing with us. 3d
Megabooks @AmyG I‘ve thought of that as well. 3d
Reggie @AmyG sidenote: I totally thought of you at the gym because I was watching Pet Sematary and our guy Dale Midkiff was there. And yes, lololol, there have been a few spots where I think she is definitely yanking us around. Even in A Little Life. It doesn‘t make me angry but it‘s more like your close friend is pranking you and you just have to laugh a little. 2d
Reggie @Megabooks because Charlie and David would have left already had it not been for Edward. Lol, I really need to jump on the positivity bandwagon because even my friend @TrishB Mrs. “when my daughter told me she wanted to marry Elvis, I told her he was dead,” even said she chooses to believe Charlie got away. So, I‘ve changed my mind. She gets away. In 2011 I chose an 8 year license instead of a 4 year because the world was supposed to end in 👇🏼 2d
Reggie in 2012. And even though the 4 year was cheaper I chose 8 because I thought of enough of us collectively believed in a future the world would not end in 2012. So, now, Charlie gets away, she makes it to the UK, and she gets to read and fall in love. And maybe there is some chocolate there. That chocolate cake her grandpa always wanted to watch her eat for the first time. 😭RIP Grandpa Charlie. 2d
Megabooks @Reggie I kinda thought it was the state‘s fault and David‘s inability to thwart it that kept them there. Maybe Edward dying was a symbol of all the Charleses and Davids being set free? I hadn‘t thought of that. 🤔🤔 My initial thought like @AmyG was that the separate sections were only mildly related. A lot of questions left. I‘m glad you have come over to the positive side a bit! 😁 that is interesting about your license. I‘m always afraid ⬇️ 2d
Megabooks ⬆️ my health will continue to fail (I‘m going through another serious hard to diagnose illness now), but I‘ve more or less accepted that I control the things I can and try to accept with a positive attitude the things I can‘t. 🤷🏻‍♀️ my dad (who I‘m closest to) was really positive when I was growing up (still is) and a lot of it rubbed off on me, mostly for the better I think (there‘s that optimism again 😉) @Reggie 2d
TrishB @Reggie 😂 can‘t believe you remembered that (she doesn‘t let me forget!) 2d
AmyG @Reggie Ha... I shall always love Dale Midkiff. ❤️ @Megabooks I also just wonder if these are 3 books with just themes in common. I also read the topic of chaos theory in reference to this book which I have been thinking about. Again, I am still on book 3. (edited) 2d

I am only about 50 pages into it so far...but I have to say that I am bewitched, mesmerized, and enthralled with this book so far! Something about the writing is just so lovely! And Chaplin agrees! ❤📖 Anyone else currently reading it and feeling the same way? #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #chaplin

It's so cold again here today! It was only 9° when I got up this morning! 🌬 The kitties are all snuggled up with me while I'm under some cozy blankets, armed with tea and books! Making progress! @trishb @squirrelbrain @rockpools

PS I hope no one is offended by the naked book. I had to undress it.

DrexEdit I always undress my hardcovers to preserve the jacket while I read the book! 💜👍 4d

squirrelbrain So do I @DrexEdit ! How are you finding it @Oryx? 4d
Soubhiville I don‘t take the jacket off on smaller books, but I did on this chunkster too. I‘m just starting book 2! 4d
rockpools Book? What book? All I can see are badgers 🦡! (It‘s like Eighth Life all over again - if I never actually see it in the wild, the chunksterness doesn‘t exist 😜). Also, though, hmm. I wonder if I‘d be more likely to read my hardcovers if they took their coats off 🤔. 4d
Oryx @squirrelbrain I really like it. It's very immersive - I think that I'll read 20 minutes in bed before going to sleep and I look up and 40 minutes have passed. I'm interested to see how (if) it all ties together. Did you finish yet? 4d
Oryx @rockpools just badgers here, continue about your business and enjoy the novella To Paradise. 4d
Oryx @Soubhiville same - the bigger the book, the more likely it is to get damaged somehow. How are you liking To Paradise so far? 4d
TrishB Cool 👍🏻 glad you‘re enjoying. 4d
Soubhiville It‘s very good- very emotional. You‘re right I get lost in it every time I pick it up. 4d
squirrelbrain LOL @rockpools 🤣! I finished a couple of days ago Emma - be interested to hear your thoughts when you‘re done…. 4d

Halfway through the book 3, I‘ve got to admit her vision of the future looks pretty f***ing bleak. Honestly, it‘s really freaking me out to think of a future with more pandemics. 😬😬 The writing is extremely compelling, and I can‘t put it down, but lordy!

Megabooks I‘ll throw this behind a spoiler tag if you think I should, but I kinda don‘t think it is. @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain 4d
Megabooks I went ahead and threw it behind a spoiler. What do y‘all think of this?? I‘m on 550. Hope to finish today. 4d
Cinfhen I don‘t think it‘s spoiler material - but agreed…the future of the UNITED STATES seems hopeless based on Yanigahara‘s depiction 😩 4d

AmyG I started book 3 last night. It‘s so bleak. Plus I am reading Anthem by Noah Hawley which is also a bleak version of the future. What was I thinking? 😫 4d
squirrelbrain Not really a spoiler (much of the press has been about the ‘pandemic‘ section of the novel) but I agree, it is very depressing. Now *I* can‘t say any more about the end for fear of spoilers for you Meg, but looking forward to discussing soon! @Cinfhen @AmyG 4d
Megabooks @Cinfhen @AmyG @squirrelbrain I‘ll remove the spoiler tag. Yeah, a lot of this future-set stuff is turning really dystopian!! 4d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘ve heard A Little Life is depressing… is this one the same? 4d
mdemanatee Oh good I‘m about to start this section 😬 4d
Megabooks @squirrelbrain @Cinfhen @AmyG just finished. I emailed Cindy that I wanted to throw the book across the room! It definitely brought out strong emotions for sure. I definitely feel mostly love but some anger for sure. Can‘t wait to discuss this weekend!! 4d
Megabooks @mdemanatee it was difficult, I will admit. 4d
Megabooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I have not read ALL, but I plan to. I love books that make me feel strong emotions, and even when I was angry at To Paradise, I still fiercely loved it. 4d
AmyG Oh wow! I am in chapter 3. No urge to throw a book yet. 4d

Not an easy book to review, and not an easy book to read either. That makes it sound like I didn‘t like it, but I did. I would say, however, that it wasn‘t quite a 5 ⭐️ read for me.

The book covers similar themes to ALL; love, loss, family, hope but in a very different way. I wasn‘t so keen on book 2 but liked the other two books - 3 the most once I got used to the fractured narrative.

Looking forward to discussing soon!
#booked2022 #newin22

RaeLovesToRead I look forward to discussing it... in about 5 months time 🤣🤣 (A Little Life took me ages to finish) 😅 5d
rockpools Yay! Congratulations on finishing 🎉📚🎉. I‘ve stalled at the start of part 2 🤦🏻‍♀️ - I‘ll be finishing about the same time @RaeLovesToRead ! 5d
Cinfhen I think our feelings are perfectly aligned, Helen ! Looking forward to chatting with you & others ( @Megabooks @AmyG @BarbaraBB @TrishB @Simona ) and anyone else who‘d like to chime in, perhaps at the end of the month?!? 5d

Simona Book 2 was my least favourite too … 5d
Ruthiella I liked her debut but skipped A Little Life because I knew it would be too traumatic for me. But I think I will definitely give this one a go. 5d

squirrelbrain Good to hear you are OK @BarbaraBB - I wasn‘t expecting a response to my email, but it will be lovely to hear from you when you feel up to it. Hope work is OK tomorrow. 😘 5d
Megabooks I‘m about 150 pages from the end, so maybe I‘ll finish tomorrow. 🤔 But I‘m kinda sick of the dystopianess. 👎🏻 it‘s definitely one I want to discuss!! 5d
Chelsea.Poole I‘m currently reading this…but at a snail‘s pace. 🐌 5d
Reggie Yes, the father part of the 2nd book was the weakest for me until you realize he‘s not really walking around but his soul is trying to leave.(?right?-I told Meg this on one of her posts but I think there are so many interpretations and takeaways different from another one can have.) 4d
squirrelbrain I hadn‘t even considered that @Reggie - interesting perspective! 3d

#JoyousJanuary update:

I‘ve finished 3 of my 4 initial choices for the readathon. I have started Sunflower Sisters but have set it aside for now. To Paradise was calling and I couldn‘t ignore it. I‘m only a few chapters in on All the Young Men on audio. Early impressions are Ruth Coker Burks is an angel on earth and my heart is likely to break. My 4th #NewYearWhoDis pick.

Ruthiella Love the spontaneity of the unplanned detour! 😆 6d

All you need to know about this book is: that it's good, interesting, that the main themes are freedom on the different levels, tiny decisions that eventually becomes big, that the book has dynamic structure, captivating characterisation, and an excellent prose - descriptive, without sentimentality and melodrama. It's not a perfect book, but it is extremely readable, and given the length - not a bit boring.

There‘s a certain game of Yahtzee being played with the characters names. Where each section, I‘m only in book 2, and I‘m sure it happens in book 3, Hanya throws the barrel and the names land differently and I‘m trying to figure out what it means when they land where they land. Snow day = reading day (I don‘t care that we didn‘t get much. 😉)

I would normally consider the writing longwinded, but I‘m really loving this. Y‘all know me and brevity!

Cinfhen I LOVED parts one & 3 - the second part of book 2 didn‘t work for me. I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts 💗💗💗 1w

Megabooks @AmyG same re: beauty, but I don‘t think I‘ll get that far today. Some house emergency will come up. It always does on Mondays. 😂 1w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m so interested to discuss this with you but I doubt I‘ll finish it before the weekend! I think I‘ll be bingeing the hard sell tomorrow. It is 💯 up my alley, so my expectations are sky high!! 1w

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Soubhiville I still haven‘t read A Little Life… I think I‘m ready for it… and I have several Chris Bohjalian books that I need to read! 1w
EadieB @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes can‘t wait for that one too! 1w
marleed Last year I deliberately started 2 new comedic murder series thinking it would fun to stay on top of them rather than play catch-up to series I‘m overwhelmed to attempt (I‘m looking at you Louise Penny). So I read Finlay Donavan and The Thursday Murder Club. Both have new books in ‘22 and I can‘t wait to get my hands on them! 1w
Kdgordon88 I didn‘t know Ruta Sepetys has a book coming out. Definitely on my list. Also, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel (edited) 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @marleed I receivedThe Thursday Murder Club for Christmas! I just stacked the second one! 1w

I loved it ♥️ Immense, intelligent, clever and wonderfully written. It won‘t tear your heart out like ALL, but it will make you think.
It must have been a gift writing the end of the book in a pandemic.
Many themes we tackle daily are woven through the book without being preachy, make your own mind up.
Waiting to discuss! I‘m lost in the hinterland of not knowing what to read next now!

squirrelbrain Oh no, the dreaded #bookhangover…! Great review. 1w
Oryx Fab review. I started last night - will hopefully get stuck in this afternoon properly 1w

StellaB Thank you for your review, it sounds exciting. I‘ve heard so much about it, really looking forward to reading it now. 1w
Cathythoughts Excellent review... I can‘t wait to get to it now 👍❤️ 1w
Simona I‘m on Book III and each part is more interesting and intriguing … I love it too! 1w
Cinfhen Great review, Trish!!! I agree, it could have felt like an agenda with everything she touched upon but it didn‘t 🙏🏻 1w
TrishB @Simona so glad you‘re loving it too ❤️ 1w
TrishB @Cinfhen which bits were you still frustrated by? I thought her ongoing discussions about equal rights was very clever. Oh, these people can have full human rights, but these can‘t 🤷‍♀️ and changing them up each time. 1w
Cinfhen I really disliked the use of epistolary technique to TELL SO MUCH of the novel. It worked well in part 3 and it was ok in part 1 but I HATED it in part 2. I pretty much thought book 2 was unnecessary to parts one & 3. I liked the very beginning of book 2 (the AIDS storyline) but the entire discussion of utopia & Hawaii was too much. I also disliked the repeating of names without ever connecting them. It was manipulative, placing Easter eggs but 1w
Cinfhen Offering no surprises. I didn‘t mind the ambiguity but I think she could have connected some of the dots over the centuries. 1w
BarbaraBB Fab review. Can‘t wait to read it! 1w
erzascarletbookgasm Great review! Stacking 1w
TrishB @Cinfhen part 2 was definitely the weakest overall, the way the storyline split. I thought she was making us work by not offering all the answers and I never worry about the bits that don‘t get tidied up. She definitely makes the reader work! 1w
TrishB @BarbaraBB @erzascarletbookgasm I hope you enjoy when you get there. I worry about over hyping it! 1w
TrishB @Oryx @StellaB @Cathythoughts @Simona hope you enjoy/are enjoying! 1w
BarbaraTheBibliophage I am trying to hard to “clear my decks” for this one. Must read a book club book first!!! 1w
TrishB @BarbaraTheBibliophage hope you enjoy when you get there! 1w
MicheleinPhilly @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m in the same boat. I have 2 book club meetings next week and have to tackle those 2 first. Then I‘m thinking of giving myself a long weekend to really sink my teeth into it. 1w
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly definitely the long weekend! 1w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MicheleinPhilly Whew - glad I only have one for a book group!! I would love to hibernate and devour this one, though. 1w

I have like 30ish pages left in part 1 and when I started I was like “why is part one so short?” And yet, for the last like 100 pages I have wanted to smack David. (Also, I am definitely not finishing this weekend as I secretly hoped even knowing it was unrealistic.)

TrishB You definitely do want to shake him! 1w
mdemanatee @TrishB oh my gosh and ending that section like “??!!!” Wooooffff. But I loved the exploration of “I am in this deep and if I have to lie to myself to keep going forward I will do it” even as it made me very anxious 1w
TrishB Very true 👍🏻 1w

I will allow myself to read To Paradise, but only once I've read my way down this stack to it.. 😬😋

That'll keep me focused.

Looking forward to The Fall of Hyperion, Big Little Lies and The Mirror Crack'd.

Also, just ordered my reading beanbag. I went for the lounger in the end because it was bigger and still has a bit of back support. All the beanbags I own end up as amorphous blobs in the end anyway!

Soubhiville Wow, big goals! Good luck! 1w
RaeLovesToRead @Soubhiville I'll probably get down to Rhythm of War and cave in 🤣🤣 1w
BarbaraBB Haha! I have these plans too. 1w
Branwen You are so much more disciplined than I am! I can almost never stick to reading goals! 😂🤣 Which one of these are you the most excited for? 1w
RaeLovesToRead @Branwen I wouldn't say disciplined, haha... I've not stuck to it yet 😅😋 I'm excited for them all, but I'm particularly curious to start The Fall of Hyperion because it's been 6 years since I read the original and it's time to find out what happens (finally!) 1w

It is here! My plan for #JoyousJanuary is to finish To Paradise in print, so I can continue with my library audiobooks. Also rounding out my #WeekendReads are my #AuthorAMonth choice on audio and the 1619 Project weekly section. (Doing a lot of lurking on those posts and really learning a great deal from the book.)

Cinfhen Yay!!!! Happy reading xx 1w
Andrew65 I need to explore the 1619 Project. 1w
Megabooks @Cinfhen just popped you a brief email to get the ball rolling. Still foggy headed and just OFF. I haven‘t felt this weird from food in a long time. I had a really exhausting day yesterday and had weird dreams overnight. As I awoke to my alarm, I thought did I buy a book in the night or was that a dream? I slid open my phone. Nope, not a dream.

@Cinfhen I remember one of the last things I read was our conversations about this book and whether to read audio or print. I guess I decided on both! 😂😂

This book redeemed itself, not because the gaps were filled but because my heart was. You‘ll recognize NY, but not NY, you‘ll recognize America but not America, you‘ll recognize A Little Life, but not ALL. There‘s SO MUCH to unwind, and I‘m eager to discuss To Paradise with all of you. This book is not perfect, and I still have some MAJOR issues with it, however I was spellbound and invested from the very first page. Audio was FABULOUS 🎧❤️

Book Three makes up 50% of the book and it almost works as a standalone novel. I‘m finding it very satisfying, if not SUPER GRIM. I can‘t wait to discuss this book with others. In the end, I‘m glad I chose audio. The multicast narration is fantastic and their reading is adding to the intensity of the prose. About 2 1/2 hours left🤓

TrishB Go you 👍🏻 I managed to get to pg164 last night. Hoping to get some proper reading in over the weekend 😁 2w

About to begin book three - Autumn 2093
Book one set in 1893, book two set in 1993
While the writing & storytelling is really beautiful, I‘m a little disappointed that the author has left MANY MANY GAPS which I thought would be addressed. Hoping that changes in the final part - To Paradise

AmyG 😬 2w

Cinfhen I was LOVING everything too @Simona @squirrelbrain but the more I read, I‘m discovering bits of disenchantment 🥲I‘m still very much obsessed but… (edited) 2w
Suzze I bought but haven‘t started. I hope you end up loving it! 2w
Cinfhen Thanks @Suzze im sure the author intentionally chose to let the reader reach their own conclusions but it‘s bugging me 😩can‘t wait to hear your thoughts xx 2w
AmyG Have you read the New Yorker interview with her? It‘s pretty recent. Google it as it might help you with her intentions in writing this book. 2w
TrishB Interesting 👍🏻 2w
Cinfhen Thanks for the article info @AmyG I of course read that one and then 4 more. She‘s a very interesting person/ writer. The articles definitely helped and confirmed my thoughts/ impressions. It‘s a great book but I do think it‘s flawed @TrishB whether intentional or not. 2w
AmyG I have read from a couple of people that it‘s a bit flawed. I am still in the first book. If anything, it‘s beautifully written. And anyway, how could she possibly top A Little Life??? 2w

This year‘s bookish resolution was to read no more than 3 books at a time. We‘re not 2 weeks in and we‘re not doing well - my library hold for this month‘s bookclub came in yesterday. So I started it. Then this morning To Paradise came in 2 weeks early - it‘ll take me 3 weeks and then some to get through it, and if I go to the back of the queue, I won‘t get it til May. So I started that too. 😬. Help! 📚📚📚

scripturient 😂 I heard that To Paradise moves rather quickly once you‘ve gotten into the story, despite it being a chunkster. Maybe that helps. 🙈 2w
rockpools @scripturient I think I‘m going to enjoy it - despite my reluctance to take on another chunkster! 2w
Caroline2 Argh! Yes! I‘m reading 4 books at the mo and it‘s stressing me out too!!! 😆 🤦‍♀️ 2w

scripturient @rockpools My copy will be delivered today and I plan to start on the weekend. Looking forward to it while also being mildly intimidated. (edited) 2w
Oryx I'm desperately trying to be good and finish my current one before starting To Paradise. But it's a struggle. 2w
julesG #BookNerdProblems - I'm reading too many books at the moment, too. 2w
TrishB I‘ve just started To Paradise with my breakfast 😁 unfortunately I now have to work!! 2w
Cinfhen I dropped everything for TP!! I‘m glad I did. It really sucks you in 🧡😁 2w
jenniferw88 I'm reading too many books too! 2w
rockpools @Caroline2 @julesG @jenniferw88 It‘s good to have company! 2w
rockpools @scripturient @Oryx I think it‘ll be worth the wait 😊 2w
rockpools @TrishB It really gets in the way, doesn‘t it?! 2w
rockpools @Cinfhen That might have to happen if I‘m to get through it in 21 days 😱. Glad you‘re still enjoying it though! 2w
Chrissyreadit I‘m a member of the #readmultiplebookssimultaneously club too 🤣 but I‘m a total mood reader and can‘t imagine not. 2w
rockpools @Chrissyreadit Ha! I‘m glad we‘re a club not a problem!! I can‘t imagine not doing either, but I was trying to limit it this year as I do get a little overwhelmed. Maybe I should just roll with it! 2w
TrishB It so does. 2w
Cinfhen It‘s going to demand 21 days of FULL ATTENTION 😁❣️😘 2w
squirrelbrain I too was trying to limit myself this year, but was just laughing at the height of my current pile of physical books, only 3 but all chunksters. Plus one audio, and two Kindle…🙄 What are we like?! 2w
Crazeedi Look at everyone ⬆️ saying the same thing!! I'm right there too! 4 books, Argghhhh!!! #blameitonlitsy 2w
AmyG Ha...I also started To Paradise. Screw the other books. 🤣 2w
Cortg My library system went fine free last year, but in the past, I‘d rather just pay the couple dollars in overdue fines then not finish and have to wait. I consider it my library donation 💰 2w
rockpools @Cinfhen THAT IS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN 🤣🤣 I might manage 10 minutes a couple of times a week 🙄 2w
rockpools @squirrelbrain My print pile is looking very civilised, if a bit chilly. But I‘ve got a 1200 page chunkster on Kindle and, somehow, THREE audiobooks on the go. I don‘t know how that happened! 2w
rockpools @Crazeedi I‘m loving that everyone‘s going … uh… yeah! And Litsy is 100% responsible! Good luck 😘 2w
rockpools @AmyG 🤣🤣 It‘s a plan! 2w
rockpools @Cortg I like your thinking. I do justify library reservation fees as supporting the greater good😁 Annoyingly though, this is an audiobook, so it‘ll automatically disappear after 21 days. And I‘m never sure when, so I need to get it finished at least a day before that… 2w
Centique I only read two books simultaneously but the pile next to my bed GROWS and then I‘m like - maybe I bail on this so I can get to that next one - so same problem but I end up bailing on some perfectly okay books. The power of the new ones! 😂😂 2w
rockpools @Centique 😂😂My ‘currently readings‘ very often become ‘currently not readings‘ before I ‘reshelve‘ them (ie bail on a perfectly good book without admitting it!) 🤫 2w

Like @AmyG said…this is a book that NEEDS to be SAVORED
ITS writing is GORGEOUS
Not painful like ALL but the same beauty
I‘m in the beginning of book 2 - “To Paradise”

squirrelbrain Looking forward to being able to start this…! 2w
TrishB Read three chapters with breakfast, now I‘m working and it‘s waving at me from the other side of the table ☹️ 2w
Cinfhen That was very risky of you @TrishB 🤣I can‘t wait to hear both of your thoughts @squirrelbrain 2w
squirrelbrain Funnily enough, I just read the first three chapters too @TrishB ! That might be it until later though…. I feel like it‘s going to be a good one Cindy! 2w
AmyG I remember when I read A Little Life....life got in the way when all I wanted to do was read. Same with this book. Ha...I thnk the universe is forcing me to read this one slow. I think I have read 4 chapters....NO complaints!!! 2w

How I try to read a book or author I love.

Alfoster Exactly!❤️👍 2w
Tgbsfk Whats the point of reading if the sentences doesnt lead you to new thoughts. Totally agree 👍🏻 2w
Bookwormjillk I agree but can‘t always help it when I need to know what happens 😁 2w
See All 20 Comments
Kdgordon88 Totally agree! Most of my reading last year was about consumption. Taking it a lot slower this year. 2w
Amiable This is why I set my Goodreads goal at 1 book every year. One. To avoid rushing through books in an attempt to hit some arbitrary high total. 2w
CuriousG I love Adam Grant, but occasionally he misses the mark. To assume that there is only one correct reason to read is judgmental and dismissive. Sometimes a person will read to gain insight and learn, which does require a slower pace. Other times, they may be reading as pure escape and enjoyment of a story precisely because they need a break from thinking. Both are completely valid. 2w
AmyG @CuriousG yes. That‘s why I wrote a book or author I love and not all books. I have been guilty of skimming many times because I want to know what will happen next. Still fun but I had no intention of gaining insight or learning. Just a fun ride. 2w
CuriousG Sorry - didn't mean to blast you. Your statement was clear 2w
CuriousG Just meant this is one of the few times I think he's being too 'all or nothing' in his thinking. 2w
Megabooks @CuriousG agree. Read how you want to read, but I also understand why you‘d want to savor a book from a favorite author @AmyG ! There is room for everyone! 💜 2w
AmyG @CuriousG NO I didn‘t think that at all. I just viewed it as more of don‘t speed read everything as you would miss too much. No worries. 😘 2w
RebL I guess I'm fortunate to be a slow reader! 2w
Suet624 The last book I read really really really slowly was... wait for it .... Fresh Water for Flowers. Sometimes I would read the heading of the chapter and just have to sit with it. I'd close the book and feel my feelings about what I had just read. :) You're probably tired of hearing me talk about this book, but it's the truth. 2w
AmyG Ha @Suet624 I love to see someone love a book so much they can‘t stop talking about it. ❤️ 2w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I sent you a little something! I hope it makes it there safely! 2w
AmyG @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks How sweet. Thank you so much. 😘 2w
Jess861 I agree with this statement - I love taking in every little bit of the book. Just sad to know there are so many books out there and I'm going to miss a bunch of them! 1w
AmyG @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I got your package....but not in my hands yet. I got an email that it‘s in my post box. Just wanted you to know it got here. Thank you in advance. @Jess861 I feel your pain. I don‘t even think I will live long enough to read all the books I actually own. 🤣 1w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yay!! ❤️📚 1w
BookBabe Great quote! I agree. ❤️ 7d

It‘s enormous!

And it has maps in, and it‘s a signed copy! I had an email from Waterstones the other day saying that, due to logistical challenges and an injury sustained by the author, the signature will be inserted on a bookplate rather than being signed in person.

Now, just to find time to start reading it….

thewallflower0707 I‘m jealous! I pre-ordered, then they told me it wouldn‘t arrive until the 22th. I didn‘t want to wait so long so I ordered from another bookstore which already has it in stock, so I‘m hoping to have it this week 😩🤞 2w
TrishB Lovely ♥️ mine‘s not here yet! 2w
Cinfhen Yay!!! Enjoy 😊 it‘s PHENOMENAL - I need to enlarge the picture so I can see the maps😍😍😍 2w

rockpools This is obviously going to have to happen at some point, isn‘t it!? @Cinfhen Do you think audio is a Really Bad Idea? 2w
Oryx Aaah. Mine is on the way. Should be here soon 2w
BarbaraBB I ordered mine too… thanks to people like you and @Cinfhen 🤍 2w
youneverarrived 😍😍 2w
RaeLovesToRead Gah... where is mine...?! Hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow 🤞🤞 2w
AmyG A signed copy! I love how she signs in green....I read she signed 19,000 copies. No wonder her signature is the way it is. 🤣 2w
MicheleinPhilly I‘m hoping to pick this up from my local shop today. She‘s supposed to be doing an in-person appearance/signing at the Free Library of Philadelphia next week but I really don‘t see that happening with 😷. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
squirrelbrain No wonder she sustained an injury then @AmyG ! 2w
squirrelbrain I hope it does happen @MicheleinPhilly - are you planning on going? 2w
squirrelbrain I hope your copy comes soon @thewallflower0707 and yours @RaeLovesToRead ! 2w
MicheleinPhilly Unfortunately, no. Our case counts are through the roof right now. It just doesn‘t seem worth it to me. They usually post video of the talks after the fact. 2w
Cinfhen The audio is actually GREAT @rockpools it‘s just that you need to really listen at FULL attention ( which I am) and I‘m LOVING IT 🥰 (edited) 2w
rockpools @Cinfhen Thanks Cindy! I‘m first in the queue, so I‘ll give it a go. With FULL attention! That‘ll be a challenge 😜. 2w
squirrelbrain Well done for being first in the queue @rockpools - you must have been quick off the mark! 2w
Cinfhen Yay!!!! That‘s fantastic @rockpools let me know you‘re thoughts xx 2w

LOVING THIS BOOK!!! I don‘t want to stop listening, but I have real life obligations to get to today🙈 I know you started as well @AmyG - share your thoughts xx

Cinfhen Have you started @Megabooks ??? 2w
squirrelbrain Gah! Mine‘s coming today (between 9.22 and 11.22 to be precise!) but no time to read it…. 2w
AnneCecilie I can‘t wait to get my hands on this. Hope to bookstore get it soon. This is one of my most anticipated releases of the year. 2w

TrishB @squirrelbrain mine too and snap ☹️ plans for the weekend! 2w
Cinfhen It‘s definitely going to suck you in @TrishB @squirrelbrain - I see Jude in the character of David - it‘s wonderful @AnneCecilie worth a trip to the bookstore ❣️❣️❣️ 2w
Oryx Mine is arriving today!! 2w
Oryx @TrishB I foolishly have a friend staying this weekend - no reading 😭- what was I thinking? 2w
AmyG I am trying to savor this book...reading every word, so it‘s going slow. I went into it knowing nothing so I had to read a few articles to understand what I was reading as I didn‘t realize it was in an alternate America. 😂 So far, loving it, too. Today will be a big reading day. (edited) 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I need to get through some library books first. Possibly this weekend?? 2w
Cinfhen I‘m also listening on a slower speed @AmyG because there is a lot going on & I don‘t want to miss anything- I‘m starting book two tonight 💚💚💚 2w
Cinfhen Enjoy @Oryx 💓💓💓 2w
Kimberlone I‘m thinking audio is the way to do this one, will probably use my next audible credit for it! 2w
Cinfhen How are you feeling @Kimberlone ?? How‘s the foot coming along?? I‘m enjoying the audio, it‘s multicast narration and definitely worth a credit!!!! 2w
Kimberlone @Cinfhen i can walk totally normally now, but the muscles around my knee and upper leg are still very weak so working on that in PT, but otherwise the broken bone is healed now. Awesome, I will use my next credit on this! 2w
Cinfhen I‘m glad to hear you‘re back on two feet!!!!! But I can imagine after months of no pressure on your leg, you‘re gonna need to work on strength @Kimberlone best of luck 💚and hope you enjoy audio 2w

I know I‘m just at the very beginning but it‘s VERY GOOD 🧡🎧🙌🏻 I think it‘s probably better to go print because there‘s a lot of characters & it‘s difficult to keep all the details in my head.
#pop22 #PacificIslanderAuthor

TrishB Mine has been dispatched 😁👍🏻 2w
AmyG Are you doing a group read? 2w
BarbaraBB Okay. Sounds promising. Keep me posted please! 2w

Cinfhen Not doing a buddy read (yet) @AmyG but it‘s a GREAT IDEA!! I just tagged #pop22 people and people who asked me to keep them in the loop!! 2w
Cinfhen It‘s DEFINITELY A TRISH book @TrishB ♥️♥️♥️ 2w
Cinfhen I think you‘ll like it as well @BarbaraBB @AmyG I kind of wish I sprung for the print copy 2w
AmyG Ah, no problem. Glad to hear it‘s good! Take notes on the characters. (edited) 2w
DrexEdit Ooooo! Looking forward to this one! 2w
squirrelbrain Mine too @TrishB - I was kind of hoping it might get delivered today, on the day of publishing but never mind. Not even sure when I‘ll get time to read it, but at least I can hold it, stroke it and smell it! Did you order a signed copy? 2w
Cinfhen I can tell, It‘s DEFINITELY I book you want to hold @squirrelbrain @AmyG but I was TOO IMPATIENT to wait to have it delivered to Israel. 2w
Cinfhen I hope the hype doesn‘t ruin everyone‘s expectations @DrexEdit but right now I‘m really enjoying the beginning chapters 2w
TrishB @squirrelbrain I ordered Waterstones special edition, but not sure if signed. Like you I‘m not sure when I‘ll start, not on a working day ☹️ 2w
sarahbarnes I read both her other books and am very intrigued by this. 2w
Megabooks I‘ve missed reading her other books but am very curious about this one. 2w
RaeLovesToRead My copy should hopefully arrive soon.... 😁 2w
AmyG Ha…I started it. How could I not? Screw all my other reads. 🤣 (edited) 2w
Cortg A Little Life destroyed me but it‘s an all time favorite. I have a library hold on this one so it may be a bit before I get it. I‘m excited and nervous about reading it! I put a hold on a print copy because I can‘t imagine listening to A Little Life so I‘m going with that. Fingers crossed it‘s awesome. I haven‘t read The People in the Trees. Can‘t wait to hear what you think if it when you finish! 2w
Cinfhen I think print is the way to go @Cortg keep me updated @AmyG it‘s definitely a book you want to discuss xxxx 2w

My precious

GondorGirl I was just going to borrow it from the library, but broke down this morning and ordered a signed copy online. 😂 2w
AmyG @GondorGirl Good move! I found a signed copy at my local store and was beyond thrilled. 2w
TrishB Exciting 😁 2w

Flaneurette There is a good article by DT Max in the recent New Yorker- she is a fascinating author. 2w
AmyG @Flaneurette Thank you! I have read a couple of interviews in the past. She seems fascinating indeed. And…excellent interview. (edited) 2w
Chelsea.Poole Gorgeous 😍 you all are horrible (or great!?!) influences on me! I just checked this out from the library to add to the stacks and stacks of others 😳🙈 2w
AmyG @Chelsea.Poole Ha! Read this one first!!! 2w
Oryx So excited to start this one 2w

Look what showed up a day early! 😮 I know this book will deserve more of me than what I can give it this week, but I have no plans for Saturday now except for this book. Looking forward to this book shattering me into a million pieces.

AmyG I can‘t wait to get this…tomorrow. I just want to hold it as I have waited years for it. 2w

It drops tomorrow 🎧🎊😁 but it‘s nearly 30 hours of audio😳Not sure when I‘ll begin listening🤷🏼‍♀️

TrishB I‘m hoping for delivery by the end of the week 😁 2w
CBee If it‘s remotely like A Little Life, I don‘t know if my heart can take it 😞😳 2w
eanderson I‘ll be watching for your review! I‘m eyeing it! 2w

Megabooks Lol. I‘ve done that before. 😁😁 2w
Cinfhen I‘ve heard it‘s VERY different from ALL @CBee it‘s set in 3 parts / 3 different timelines- not sure how they all connect. Will keep you all posted @TrishB @eanderson @Megabooks 2w
BarbaraBB I‘m hesitant about this one so will gladly await your verdict! 2w

So I just stumbled upon the news that Hanya Yanagihara has a new novel being released in just a few days. I don't know if I'm ready for what is bound to be an emotional immersive experience, but I pre-ordered it the second I saw it!
