My November #bookspin list. I'm very close to finishing two reading challenges (#booked2023 and #52bookclub23), so my focus this month is on books that will finish the last few prompts.

I finished #52bookclub23 with these books for each prompt. Most of them I liked, some of them I just read to get rid of the prompt but in general it‘s been fun again and I enjoyed sharing suggestions with you and be inspired by your reviews. Here‘s to #52bookclub24!

BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Second half of November! Can‘t wait! 4w
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain And so good that you‘re finishing all the challenges! I finished #pop23 already but won‘t finish #ReadingTheAmericas23, too many islands! 4w

Yeah well. I read it because it won the #NewberyMedal and I needed that to finish the #52bookclub23, but finishing that challenge was about the greatest satisfaction I got out of the book. Let‘s just say I‘m not a fan of YA and the teen drama just doesn‘t work me. I can see though why my daughter loved it.

Smarkies Well done on finishing the challenge! 4w
Read4life Congrats on finishing the challenge! 4w

Amiable I‘m with you re: YA. I‘m well past the age where I want to immerse myself in teen drama. 4w
BarbaraBB @Amiable I realize I lately much prefer books about aging - and I start feeling ancient 👵🏼 😂 4w
Librarybelle Congratulations on finishing the #52bookclub23 challenge! 4w
squirrelbrain Well done on finishing! 🎉🎉🎉 4w
Bluebird Lol! Congrats on finishing the challenge. I‘m still plugging away at it. I may finish before end of year. 🤞 4w

KathyWheeler I read Yellowface and liked it, but, for reasons I can‘t explain, I‘m intimidated by Babel. 1mo
jenniferw88 @KathyWheeler understandable. I think a little knowledge of UK history during Victoria's early reign would be desirable, as certain references and events could go over one's head (especially if you live abroad). 1mo
KathyWheeler @jenniferw88 That actually helps — when I got my masters in English, my area was Victorian Lit. 1mo

jenniferw88 @KathyWheeler 👍😀 to be fair to the author, it covers the last few years of William IV's reign and the beginning of Victoria's. 1mo
Librarybelle Hooray! 1mo
BarbaraBB I hadn‘t realized you hadn‘t read this one yet. It‘s good right? 1mo

Peony in Love | Lisa See

Pickpick

A slow burning novel that explores seventeenth-century China customs and religion. At the center of this is the work The Peony Pavilion, a real piece of writing that was deemed controversial in its time (how appropriate that I finished this at the start of Banned Books Week).

Peony as a character grows in the novel, covering obsessive love and sorrow and in a way redemption. I didn‘t particularly like her, but her journey of self-understanding ⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️ makes up for any negative thoughts I had toward her. I‘ve started a few of See‘s books but, as they all follow a slow burning narrative, I‘ve tended to put them to the side to try again later. I think this may be the first one by See that I finished. #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead 2mo
Cinfhen If you want to try See again I highly recommend this one!! It was only a tad slow but the ultimate payoff was SO WORTH the time!!! 2mo
Librarybelle @Cinfhen Thanks! That is one I have not tried yet! 2mo

Preston joins an exploration for La Ciudad Blanca, or the White City, in #Honduras that reportedly has riches beyond belief. What is discovered is quite amazing, with some moments of me squealing in disgust as Preston comes in close contact with reptiles and bugs.

It should be noted too that the methods used in this exploration raised a lot of controversy in the archaeology community - Preston does address this and gives his thoughts. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️Nevertheless, this is fascinating. There are chapters with really dense background, but the experience in the mountainous rainforest is edge of your seat type reading. Preston also addresses disease - there is a reason why (I won‘t spoil it!). But, his cautions of worldwide epidemics are a foreshadowing of what we experienced in 2020 (this was published in 2017). I was riveted. Highly recommended…⬇️⬇️⬇️ 2mo
Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ though I would also recommend reading the articles of the dissenters for their thoughts on this expedition. 2mo

Hooked_on_books I read this a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. I especially appreciate how inept he was at adventuring. 😂 I found that relatable! 2mo
Cinfhen I read this awhile back and LOVED it!!! He‘s such a great NF writer!!! I‘ve read others by him and they‘ve all been OUTSTANDING 😁 2mo

Bluebird I‘ve had this book on my TBR mountain for awhile and despite hearing so many good things about it, it remains unread. I think I will add to my bookspinbingo list for November so I remind myself to get to it soon! Looking forward to going down the rabbithole with this one 2mo
Librarybelle @Bluebird That sounds wonderful, and a perfect addition for Nonfiction November! 2mo
