Practical Magic | Alice Hoffman
post image

I didn‘t really care for this one but it was a 3 hr listen and I‘m using for #pop22 ~ a book about witches and #booked2022 ~ about sisters

@KarenUK @Cinfhen @Kalalalatja @Megabooks @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraBB @Laughterhp @RaeLovesToRead @jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain @BarbaraTheBibliophage

Cinfhen Well that‘s a big bonus!!! #DoubleDip 1w
Megabooks I liked the movie more. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w
Kimberlone This book is the perfect example of the movie being better, and the other books in the series also being better. I was soooo underwhelmed by this book (after loving the movie since it came out) and then I was totally blown away by the prequel books. 7d
Cortg @Kimberlone Interesting! I can‘t say I‘ll continue with the series, but that‘s good to know. I think this is the 1st Alice Hoffman book I‘ve read. 7d
Cortg @Megabooks @Kimberlone I haven‘t watched the movie but decided on the book because a friend was chatting about finding it on TV recently and how much she enjoyed it. Maybe I‘ll check out the movie, we‘ll see 😃 7d

Definitely not my usual thing but that‘s the joy of challenges! There‘s a secret magical library with a strange manipulative competition between the ‘Six‘. Too much world-building, magicy stuff for me, but I did enjoy following the chess-like moves and POVs of each of the six chosen to protect and learn at the library. I love a #DarkAcademia vibe, and the complexity of characters kept me engaged. No.2 of the #duology due in Oct. #pop22 #booked2022

Cinfhen Well done 👍🏻 2w
squirrelbrain Great review! I was going to read this one for this prompt, (I think @trishb recommended it - or at least C did! 🤣) but went with this instead… 2w
TrishB @squirrelbrain definitely C - it‘s one of her fave books. I have the special edition of the second one on order! 2w

Megabooks I‘ve been wondering what to do with the duology. Great review! 2w
KarenUK @Megabooks it‘s one the hardest challenges I think! Particularly when I‘m not a fantasy reader usually! So many duologies are in that genre. This was a #doubledip for two challenges, so I decided to give it a go! The audio is full cast and really well done. 2w
Cortg Way to keep an open mind! Congrats on finishing a non-favorite genre 🥳 2w
BarbaraBB It sounds fun! 2w

I had really high hopes for this after reading a glowing review in the British press, although I can‘t remember which newspaper. It *was* really interesting and definitely a pick (and not a low pick) but it just didn‘t grab me as much as I expected. After a few days trying to figure out why, I think it just didn‘t have enough of that ‘storytelling‘ element; it wasn‘t up there with Patrick Radden Keefe‘s books, for example.

Cinfhen I recently bought this as an Audible deal / glad to hear it‘s a pick 🤩 4w

Cinfhen And yay on all the prompts!! #DoubleDip 🍦 4w
Cortg A colleague recently told me this read is a must! I‘ll listen to the audio. I live about 15-20 minutes from Baltimore so it‘ll be interesting! 4w
squirrelbrain I think the audio may work even better than print. @Cinfhen @Cortg And, Cortney, super-fascinating for you - I bet you‘ll know some of the places mentioned. 4w

I finished the second quarter of #Booked2022 already! The books I chose are:

1. About a fictional royal: The Shadow King
2. Written by a journalist: The House at Sugar Beach
3. Author born in Africa: We Need New Names
4. Make your own prompt (A Dutch book): We Slaves of Surinam
5. A nautical novel: The Still Point
6. A murder mystery: The Aosawa Murders

Half of them I used for #ReadingAfrica2022 too but I‘m always happy to #doubledip 😇

A journey like no other. A heart wrenching yet hopeful story of young Jama, a boy from Yemen, who travels across Africa and Asia with nothing more than dreams, determination and the goal to find his father. What makes this book even more special, the events of WWII are on the periphery of the story leading to a fascinating background. Stunning narration #Hoopla #ReadingAfrica22 I‘m using for #Eritrea and #Djibouti

BarbaraBB Djibouti. 🤔 Choices… 2mo
Cinfhen Yeah/ totally using a #DoubleDip @BarbaraBB because I don‘t think I‘m gonna find books for those countries so easily 2mo

BarbaraBB Both are hard indeed. 2mo
Cinfhen A lot more time is spent in #Eritrea @BarbaraBB but there‘s at least a chapters worth in #Djibouti 2mo
ravenlee Not sure if it helps, but the tagged book has a small section in Djibouti - but it‘s about the US military presence there. @BarbaraBB 2mo
Cinfhen That‘s kind of cool @ravenlee thanks for sharing!! Maybe I‘ll give it a listen. 2mo
Librarybelle Great review! 2mo
BarbaraBB @ravenlee Thanks! Very helpful 🤍 2mo
Centique This sounds amazing! 2mo
Cinfhen I really think you‘d like this one @Centique 2mo

This is the story of Hamish Charles Sutherland Fraser's school days, a socially awkward boy who tries his best and sometimes triumphs. He struggles with making friends, bullies, and academics. I liked it, but I think I would have gotten out of it if I was more familiar with South African schools and sports. #ReadingAfrica2022 #SouthAfrica #Booked2022 #AuthorBornInAfrica @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage

Cinfhen Sounds good!! Maybe a #BorrowNotBuy 2mo
Cinfhen Nice #DoubleDip 🍦🍦 2mo
Librarybelle Awesome! And hooray for multiple prompts filled! 2mo

So out of my usual reading genre…but I‘m liking it!! A Shakespeare retelling of Romeo & Juliet set in 1920‘s Shanghai.
#POP22 #OwnVoicesSFF would also work for #Booked2022 #SetInChina

vlwelser We're doing the sequel as a bonus buddy read in March if you're interested. 5mo
KarenUK Definitely out of your comfort zone! All the teens I work with LOVE this book! I might have to steal you idea for this #doubledip 💕!! 5mo
Cinfhen If I end up enjoying I would definitely be interested @vlwelser thanks for letting me know 😁 5mo

I did not love this. It was going well until about the last 1/3 of the book, when the MC does something that, to me, wasn‘t believable of her character. Instead, it just seemed like a convenient plot device.

#booked2022 - about a cult or religion
#pop22 - book that fulfills a favorite prompt from a past PS challenge (book by a female author)

Cinfhen Yay!! #DoubleDip 🍦🍦 6mo
4thhouseontheleft Aw, that's too bad you didn't love it, but at least you checked off a few prompts! 6mo
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 6mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage Ugh. Hate when that happens … yay for checking off prompts, though! 6mo
