Finished in time for a great book club meeting! Really readable and written with a lot of heart and historical research. If you're interested in how the intersection of sexism and racism has impacted Black women in the US historically, and especially the ways white women and feminists have excluded Black women, this is an accessible start!

I've been back to Andy's part for five minutes, and I just want to go back to Laura's 1986 part, it was so much more interesting than Andy's fugitive road trip. 😭 I'm feeling very much on Laura's and the real Dr. Maplecroft's side, down with the Queller solution!! Does Andy's part get more interesting? And do I get more Laura/Jane POV? 😂 #Scarathlon2021 #TeamSlaughter #TeamRead #BuddyRead

Week 1 of #Scarathlon2021 #TeamSlaughter - 226 points, I think! I realized some of my reading counts for #BookSpinBingo but not for #BFC21, so I had to separate out my point tallying. I've done really well making time for little bits of reading for fun! And I'm halfway through the tagged and loving it. I think it'll count as a theme read? Because of Dune trying to solve the mystery of the syndrome. And it's my #BookSpin! @Clwojick

Clwojick #BFC21 counts as a reading event too, so any hours read towards that can count for points too. 2mo
Caterina @Clwojick Yes! Thank you. 😊 I meant that I put some seminary readings on my #BookSpinBingo, but my #BFC21 goal is related to reading for fun, which homework technically isn't. So those seminary books only count for one of the readathons, not both! 2mo

This week's death class reading is just this book in its entirety, and we're going to Fernwood Cemetery tomorrow as a field trip! Thankful that this is such a quick read, I've barely had any time to work on it this week. 😅 Should have this book done for #Scarathlon2021 #TeamSlaughter and #BookSpinBingo by tonight/tomorrow morning! 👍

@CounterfeitNickel and I did a dinner + used bookstore date last night and picked up this beautiful book, then read it together last night. The illustrations are gorgeous, the pages are thick and textured, and the story (a take on a 12th c. Persian epic) magical and weird. Glad we bumped into this! I'd like the read the translated original next. Off to a good start with my #BFC21 goal of reading for fun and my #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter reading!

I didn't keep up with #BFC21 well last month. This time I've made a little tracker on the same pages as my #BookSpinBingo and #Scarathlon2021 tracking, and I've kept my goals simple: Read for fun and practice good sleep hygiene (especially taking time to wind down instead of staying up late studying and then tossing myself into bed immediately, that doesn't work for me as an adult like it did as a teen) at least 21 days each. 👍 @wanderinglynn

wanderinglynn Awesome! And great goals! 🙌🏻🎃🧡 2mo

This'll serve as both my #BookSpinBingo list and my #Scarathlon2021 #TeamSlaughter TBR for October! I'm having a hard time reading anything that isn't required for seminary right now, so I've divided most of the other books into halves or thirds to encourage myself to at least make some progress! Really looking forward to October and hopefully being on Litsy more. 🥰 @TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick

Going to join in very gently with #BFC21 for the month! I'm setting 2 habit intentions, with my goal being 21 days for each. With my third year of my Master of Divinity starting next week, I want to be intentional about making space for reading for fun (with my eyes or ears). I also want to explore yoga and see how that sits with my body and spirit. Thanks, @wanderinglynn , for running this. ❤️

I'm ready for September's #BookSpinBingo! Split a couple tough reads into multiple slots again (notably the tagged), and included some slots for seminary assigned reading - I think I'll have enough reading to finish a couple books in September. 😅 Classes start next week, and I plan to read lots before then! Here are my final results for #BookSpinBingo! I finished 5 books in August. I didn't get to my #BookSpin at all (maybe next month I will - I'm keeping it on my list!) and I met my goal with my #DoubleSpin (reading half of the tagged). I had two 5 star reads: A Psalm for the Wild-Built and You Are Your Best Thing, and I think the tagged will be 5 stars too! Good month. ❤ #AugustWrapUp @TheAromaOfBooks

Today is my 5 year #Litsyversary, and I just finished this little book in Yosemite, on the porch of the hotel my partner and I are staying at. ? What a strange and compelling fever dream of a book, capturing Shepard's last days in a kind of "autofiction." Makes me a little curious to read some of Shepard's other work! But barely a pick for me, 3/5 stars, just didn't *love* it.

Over these 5 years, I've always come back to Litsy. Love it here. ❤️

A #PetPeeve for me: authors not giving citations or a bibliography in nonfiction work! Especially in something like this book, which introduces socialism. I would love some endnotes and a bibliography + further reading/learning list! 😤

ChasingOm Why would an author try to avoid citations?! 🤯 5mo
Megabooks Citations should be there for people who want them. Easy to ignore if it doesn‘t matter to you! 😡 5mo

My ❤️ @CounterfeitNickel loaned me this & told me to read it! PROS: Very easy, accessible read. Snarky, conversational tone. Solid little intro! CONS: Katch *intentionally* avoids giving citations or a bibliography, which is particularly frustrating in an introductory book. Generalizes a little too much about socialists (a really diverse group!). BOTTOM LINE: worth a read if you're interested in socialism or want to talk to people about socialism!

Finished the second in the trilogy with some honey vanilla chamomile tea this afternoon. 💕 Solid middle book! It's so interesting to see how Lilith's hope is working out from the first book, and to think about what I would do in the situations these humans, constructs, and aliens are put into. Freedom, identity, consent, assimilation, resistance, violence, connection... Much to think about. Writing is not beautiful, but simple and easy to read.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa This series was very thought provoking I thought. And hard to describe to anyone else 😂 5mo

My urge to listen to some James Baldwin-themed audiobooks this month during my #audiocommute coincided unexpectedly with Baldwin being July's #AuthorAMonth! I finished my reread of The Fire Next Time, and now I'm onto The Fire This Time. Then Eddie Glaude's book, which is subtitled "James Baldwin's America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own." One of my favorite things: sitting incorrectly in a chair, curled up around a good book! ? "Compulsory sexuality" is an important addition to the conversation about sexuality and sex, inspired by Adrienne Rich's "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence." Ace (asexual) discourse has a lot to offer to understanding the full range of human sexuality and desire better!

I am relishing this audiobook on my #audiocommute to the hospital. I have a deep love of Russian classics, and Saunders's essays are a wonderful way to more deeply appreciate these short stories and, more generally, the art of story. I do feel a bit of a Russian lit kick coming on, but I have so many books I want to read, I need to resist another reread of War and Peace or Anna Karenina. 😅

My day-off activities of reading and eating continue with my mom's squash casserole and the second book in this trilogy! I had to put it down in January after the first one (Dawn)'s intensity, but I'm finding the second one a little less intense. Butler is so easy to read but makes you think so much! Themes of identity, colonialism, consent, assimilation, and the Other continue to thread through this installment.

Bailedbailed

Excellent oatmeal, terrible book. Skim-read for my chaplaincy internship, and the best part was telling my dad about it and critiquing it. Stiff, out-of-date, unhelpful, artificial, feels very corporate consultant-y (which is one of the author's hats, although he's also a minister), and horrendously lacking in even the most basic cultural and racial competency. Avoid at all costs. 🤮

marleed Oh wow, is it sometimes helpful to read - and bail - advice that reminds you and confirms what you will not do? 6mo
Caterina @marleed Haha it sure can be! I think critiquing stuff brings more clarity to our own values and approaches, and that definitely happened for me while skim-reading this book. 6mo
