Yay!: Journal | Ellie Claire

I know this might seem arbitrary and even silly to some, but I‘ve been intentionally chipping away at my TBR this year and, when I saw that my want to read books and read books are now even, I couldn‘t help but be proud of myself. I‘ve been much better about removing books, bailing on books, and reading from my TBR because life is too short to read bad books and to not get around to reading what you‘ve wanted to (in some cases, for decades)! 🥳

sarahbellum #roll100 and #bookspin were immensely helpful getting to this milestone. Thank you, @PuddleJumper and @TheAromaofBooks! 🤗 (edited) 3d

This book took me back to being young, insecure, and not knowing what to do with all of the obsessive thoughts and feelings pinging around your head when you‘re completely under someone else‘s spell. A slippery, uncomfortable, and sometimes unhealthy state to be in, I was appreciative of the character growth and semi-happy ending Highsmith developed.

My first Highsmith, but probably not my last #authoramonth

Yay! June #roll100 picks got posted early (enjoy your travels, @PuddleJumper !)

#15 is Virgins (the second book set in a Catholic school that the dice have chosen for me 😆)
#56 is The Kin of Ata are Waiting for You (apparently a new age-y trip?)
#62 is Life of Pi (probably the last person on Earth to read this!)

I don‘t remember where I heard about Virgins and The Kin- they‘ve been on my TBR since I was a teenager. Hopefully no more bails 🤞

Bailedbailed

Two bails in one day and both #roll100 picks 😱😭

Made it a little over 100 pages and had to put this one aside. The long discussions of religion and Russian politics didn‘t hold my attention, even though I really enjoyed West‘s descriptions and style outside of the conversations.

Maybe I‘ll return to this someday when I‘m more patient 🤷🏻‍♀️ Or can anyone recommend another West title?

Ruthiella I‘ve only read her semi-autobiographical novel, The Fountain Overflows, which I liked a lot. 1w

Bailedbailed

I listened to the intro, did some googling, and decided to bail. After reading about the controversy and that Relin committed suicide once the truthfulness of the book was called into question, I just couldn‘t continue.

First May #roll100 is a bummer of a DNF

PuddleJumper You have to stay true to yourself. Better to DNF a book than feel compromised. The whole situation over the book seems sketchy 1w
Smarkies I have also taken this book off my TBR because of all the controversy. Doesn't seem right reading it after the sketchiness. 1w

My May #bookspinbingo list. I primarily jumped down to books 401-420 on my Goodreads TBR, but adjusted a bit because 1.) it was originally too nonfiction heavy and 2.) I‘ll be traveling to a work conference the first week in May and don‘t anticipate being able to read much while I‘m there. I added in #authoramonth, #foodandlit, and my IRL book club picks to help with all of this (I usually just use my free spaces for those)

This was my first Laurence & it‘s going to take me awhile to process. Can‘t say I loved it, but there‘s something very powerful about reading a first person account of dying of old age. Rightfully uncomfortable & stifling.

Here‘s a cute picture of our pup, Gus, to make this review less of a bummer. As a librarian and decent human, I wanted to love this book so much. The story of Belle should be shouted from the rooftops, but her real story, not this dry and gossip-tinted one. I stopped halfway out of sheer boredom and complete disinterest in the romance that was brewing. No story arc in sight. Sigh. Sorry #overbookedclub, I hope I‘m the outlier here!

Oof. This book is great, but hard. I‘ve been a pescatarian since my early 20s, but have mostly kept my head in the sand regarding the atrocities of factory farming and fishing. Bailed at 50 pages. Not sure if I was getting emotional whiplash from going from the big-hearted Circle of Friends to this cold and tedious book or if this just wasn‘t ever going to be for me, but I was completely bored and could not make myself care an iota about Rabbit. To the reviews that are impressed that such good writing could make the reader interested in such a despicable male character, I say what a waste of talent. ⬇️

Finally finished this chunky (600p) and delightfully warm read! Near the end, some of the romantic elements started to get a little melodramatic for me, but Binchy reigned it in and had me cheering for Benny and Eve.
