Salvage the Bones
Salvage the Bones | Jesmyn Ward
A hurricane is building over the Gulf of Mexico, threatening the coastal town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, and Esch's father is growing concerned. He's a hard drinker, largely absent, and it isn't often he worries about the family. Esch and her three brothers are stocking up on food, but there isn't much to save. Lately, Esch can't keep down what food she gets; at fifteen, she has just realized that she's pregnant. Her brother Skeetah is sneaking scraps for his prized pit bull's new litter, dying one by one. Meanwhile, brothers Randall and Junior try to stake their claim in a family long on child's play and short on parenting. As the twelve days that make up the novel's framework yield to a dramatic conclusion, this unforgettable family - motherless children sacrificing for one another as they can, protectingand nurturing where love is scarce - pulls itself up to face another day.

1. I completed my Goodreads challenge of 52 books. I'm still working on the Read Harder Challenges from the bookriot journal.
2. Hmm... On Litsy, few people know that I've lived in Spain, Chile, Istanbul, and India.
3. Depends on my mood- I always love Motown. Also modern folk (which my friend calls "Hey!" music)
4. Sept and Nov 23 are our wedding anniversaries because we had a wedding in the US and one in India.
5. ? (Labeled as high five...)

This book was brutal, and that made it hard to get into at the beginning. Yet, as I got further along it got harder and harder to put down. Knowing that Hurricane Katrina was heading straight for them and seeing the incredibly difficult situation in which they lived made for a continuously ominous feeling. In the end, I saw this as a powerful story of determination and survival.

This book has been lost on my #NetGalley shelf for a while. 😬

I wish I‘d read reviews before deciding to read this one as it contains disturbing dog fighting scenes and the terrible neglect of her puppies. I skipped through much of this book due to that. I will say she‘s an incredibly talented writer and my opinion of this (one book) won‘t deter reading her others.

I don‘t know a thing about this book other than those who read it liked it. I started it last night. I find it fun to start books as a blank slate and to just wait to see what they do for me. And you?!

readingjedi Generally, yes, I love reading "blind" so to speak but in this case if cruelty to animals upsets you be prepared. 7mo
SqueakyChu @readingjedi I obviously don‘t like it, but at least I know this is fiction. Thanks for the heads up, though. 7mo
Graywacke Reading blind and open-minded can be the best way. It‘s the second part I find not so easy (hence, often avoid the first part). 7mo
See All 9 Comments
SqueakyChu @Graywacke Let me try to understand what you‘re saying. You don‘t often read blind because you cannot be open-minded about some subjects (animal cruelty, let‘s say)? I will read blind, but I‘ll stop reading if I find something which truly offends me (although I can‘t for the life of me think of an example!). 7mo
Weaponxgirl I like to know certain things as I‘m a mood reader but for me this is more a is this a plot on interior emotions driven book. Just a general feel for what kind of book it is as I enjoy most kind of books depending on my mood at the time. No point me trying a experimental writing style book if I‘m in the mood for something more story based. But when it comes to plot I quite like going in blind, just give me the basics and I‘m happy to go a ride 7mo
Weaponxgirl I have no idea if that made sense btw 7mo
Graywacke @SqueakyChu hmm. Not so easy to explain. I get impatient with books that are doing things I don‘t understand or expect 7mo
SqueakyChu @Weaponxgirl I understand. You need to know at least something about a book before reading it. I literally knew nothing about this book other than the title and author. I saw from the front of the book that it was a National Book Award winner (a point in its favor) and knew that the author was liked very much by kidzdoc, a fellow LibraryThing member. I had this copy of the book at home so I thought I‘d give it a try. (edited) 7mo
SqueakyChu I generally have no hesitancy to stop reading a book that I don‘t like or especially one I find boring. At the beginning of this book (I‘ve only read two chapters so far), I thought, “Uh oh! Pit bulls! I wonder if that will mean illegal activity or dogfighting?!” To be fair, I have a nephew who has a pet pit bull named Mabel! 😃 7mo

Didn't like this nor did I rate the writing. Disliked the characters especially the weird, creepy, borderline psycho Skeetah. And his relationship with the dog just made my stomach churn. Dog fight scene was horrid. The Greek mythology references didn't sit comfortably in the narrative & seemed to me to be cynical & shoehorned in & out of character with the narrative voice. It elicited no sympathy or emotion in me. Sorry not sorry 🦃🦃🦃

Moray_Reads I've felt much the same about Ward's books. They just leave me cold 12mo

I was a little unsure what to rate this one because the middle dragged a bit because as important as the dog is, I got a little tired of the dog. This family had so many issues and felt so real. Katrina didn't feel sensationalized here, which I worry about when major events are depicted in fiction. Beautifully written, felt mythic or universal in parts, esp the day before and the day the storm hits. Made me want to re-read Medea and Faulkner.

I‘m looking forward to reading others by Jesmyn Ward. Her prose is beautiful, and her characters are provocative. I loved the structure - counting down the ten days prior to Hurricane Katrina - and Ward‘s main character, Esch, is richly drawn.
