⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed “A Study in Emerald” - the first story in Gaiman‘s Fragile Things collection. Such a fun one! I‘d definitely be interested in reading more in this world.

I caved. I had said, “No more book boxes!” But then Maggie herself posted some of the art that would be featured in this special edition book and I thought, “WOW AND I LOVE HER AND YES I MUST HAVE IT.”

So much for willpower.

This probably means that I won‘t be getting the Holly Black box though because I‘m broke now 😅 But I‘ve got a kindle, so the minute Queen of Nothing comes out, I can download it! Kindles are beautiful little things.

TheBookHippie 🤣 been there!!! Enjoy!!! 2d

Heartbreaking, infuriating, and entirely relevant today even though it was originally published in 1974. You would think in forty-five years, our community in the U.S. would be in a better place, but this could have been written yesterday😤

As always, Bahni Turpin‘s reading is perfect.

I hear the movie counterpart is gorgeous, so I‘ll be looking it up soon.

♥️ 💔

Day 10: #selflove

I saw this on Mantra Magazine‘s IG page (I don‘t know where they got this axiom—whether they made it up themselves or grabbed it from someone else), but I think it‘s a pretty cool sentiment. We spend a lot of time thinking about things we want to change and not enough celebrating the things we have and do so well.

Anyway, here it is. Right response for the right prompt, finally!

So, I‘m not marking this one as bail (I‘m actually just going to remove it from my books) because I only got 40% of the way through before my book club meeting and the likelihood that I actually finish it is pretty low. I‘m just reading books I‘m enjoying so much more right now! But it is good—infuriating and heartbreaking, but good. I just don‘t plan to finish it any time soon 🤷🏻‍♀️

Day One: #ReadingGoals
My reading goals this month are mainly to focus on and finish my in real life book club book before the next meeting! Tomorrow is our meeting for the tagged book and I‘m only 23% of the way through— not because it‘s not good (I find it quite interesting), but because I‘ve been devoting all my spare reading time to Priory of the Orange Tree 🧡 (it‘s a tome, so I‘m only about 30% through that one!)

1. A few books have really irked me, but I hated the writing style in the Divergent series. I only read the first one and thought it was blah.

An incredible collection, but this story, in particular, is everything. “Sinners, Saints, Dragons, and Haints in the City Beneath the Still Waters” is a well-crafted parable of what happens to us in times of crisis, and the monsters (or angels) we are all capable of becoming. Hands down fav story of the collection. I need a physical copy of this book! Need it! (I‘ll wait til after swaps to buy!)

💯 recommend

I reeeeaaaalllyy need to invest in the hardback copy of this book (not only because the cover is gorgeous), but because there is so much happening in these stories, I need to physically read them instead of just listening to them. I actually yelled “what the f—-?!” (but, like, in a good way) at the gym while I was listening to “Too Many Yesterdays, Not Enough Tomorrows.” The premise of that one is so different, fresh and unique— I loved it!

A long time ago, I listened to Fragile Things on audio. I was still using CDs at the time, so I‘m talking years, here. I recently purchased the paperback because a certain story, “October in the Chair,” always stuck with me. I know it‘s a precursor to The Graveyard Book, but something about this story just blows me away - in part, its brevity. I am planning to read it with my classes in the coming months 🥰

October in the Chair - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

ShelfRighteous The Graveyard Book is one of my absolute favs from Gaiman! If this preceeds it I have to read it asap🤩 3w
hermyknee @ShelfRighteous I think that “October in the Chair” is the story that led him to writing The Graveyard Book. I‘m pretty sure. It‘s a great short story, anyway. I‘m looking forward to revisiting all the short stories in this collection! 3w

There are quite a few things I love about using this kindle paperwhite: font size adjustments, lighting adjustments, but I think the coolest thing is this dictionary feature! All I have to do is highlight the word and it will bring up both dictionary and Wikipedia to help me understand it!

Is it too late for me to jump in on the #summersendreadathon ? I‘m about 12% into The Priory of the Orange Tree on my kindle. I know this book is a tome, and I‘m wondering if I‘ll feel the same sense of accomplishment reading it on an e-reader as I would the physical book?

I really enjoyed “The Narcomancer,” but I definitely need this book in hardback (A because the cover is beautiful and B because I feel like I‘m missing some of the details in the audio). Audio can be a little bit more difficult for me to follow especially with a story as complex as this one.

Cute little book for book lovers. Just what I had been looking for. It didn‘t blow me away, but it‘s sweet.

Thanks for the tag, @julesG 💙

1. A jungle island, and there would most certainly be monsters.
2. iCalendar, nomo (my sobriety counter), and audible (only because I can now get Litsy on the internet!)
3. Different sparkling waters to try.
4. Siesta Key beach at sunset after a rainy day 💕

(Re)starting this one for my IRL book club. I started it a while ago, but can‘t remember anything or why I put it down 🤷🏻‍♀️

Trigger warnings: animal cruelty, rape, violence

This was a fast-paced, but very difficult book to read. Some of the scenes were too graphic for me and I had to skip over paragraphs. It has multiple perspectives, so there is strong character development throughout, but I don‘t really know how I felt about the characters at this point. It‘s a fast read & it‘s difficult to put down once you‘ve picked it up. However, it is a tough book.

JoScho Yeah I got this one from the library when it first came out and returned it without reading because of the animal cruelty-I just can‘t. 2mo
hermyknee @JoScho yes, it was almost a bail for me for that reason 2mo
hermyknee @JoScho okay. The writing was good, but I‘m changing my rating to a so-so because now that it‘s two days later I don‘t know if I‘m glad I read the book or deeply disturbed by it. I don‘t think I‘d recommend it to any of my students, so so-so. 2mo

JoScho Good to know I‘m not missing anything. It sounded so good in theory. 2mo
That-Bookish-Hiker @hermyknee I must have blacked out the animal cruelty when I read it cause I don‘t remember it at all. 2mo
hermyknee @That-Bookish-Hiker I overcame it! It was a totally engrossing book so I‘m glad I had it on the airplane with me! 2mo
