Sing, Unburied, Sing
Sing, Unburied, Sing | Jesmyn Ward
A searing and profound Southern odyssey by National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward. In Jesmyn Ward s first novel since her National Book Award winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural twenty-first-century America. Drawing on Morrison and Faulkner, The Odyssey and the Old Testament, Ward gives us an epochal story, a journey through Mississippi s past and present that is both an intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle. Ward is a major American writer, multiply awarded and universally lauded, and in Sing, Unburied, Sing she is at the height of her powers. Jojo and his toddler sister, Kayla, live with their grandparents, Mam and Pop, and the occasional presence of their drug-addicted mother, Leonie, on a farm on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Leonie is simultaneously tormented and comforted by visions of her dead brother, which only come to her when she s high; Mam is dying of cancer; and quiet, steady Pop tries to run the household and teach Jojo how to be a man. When the white father of Leonie s children is released from prison, she packs her kids and a friend into her car and sets out across the state for Parchman farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, on a journey rife with danger and promise. Sing, Unburied, Sing grapples with the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power, and limitations, of the bonds of family. Rich with Ward s distinctive, musical language, Sing, Unburied, Sing is a majestic new work and an essential contribution to American literature."

I guess I wasn‘t as thrilled with this book as everyone else seemed to be. It was okay...not really sure how everything fit together, even after finishing it. I must like nice, neat stories with finality lol 🤷‍♀️ However, the last chapter was truly haunting...

I don‘t buy used books, but I had to get out of the hustle and bustle of the streets of NOLA and visit Beckham‘s Bookshop. These two elderly gentlemen (one presumably was Mr. Beckham) were restoring some old books and it was neat watching them. They did have a small section of new books featuring Louisiana in them. So my husband bought me one for my birthday 😁

Choosing my #top6reads for 2019 thus far was challenging! I totally could‘ve doubled this.

I listened to the top row on audio (but I‘m sure they‘d stand up in print; I *strongly* suggest you listen to “Sadie,” though. The format really lends itself to voice performance).

The book on the bottom left is a classic; bottom middle is poetry; bottom right has a dark “Anne of Green Gables” vibe (& my love for it is a bit of an #unpopularopinion).

Librarybelle I thought Sing Unburied Sing was good! And, you‘ve totally sold me on the dark Anne of Green Gables vibe book! 2w
monalyisha @Librarybelle A caveat: don‘t expect it to be *too* similar! But it‘s like, what might‘ve happened if things went horribly, sadly wrong. Same orphaned child desperate for love. Same immediate connection with the male figure. Same gorgeous, natural setting. But mysterious, tragic, & hidden in fog. 2w
Librarybelle 👍 2w
tjwill Orphan of Salt Winds sounds interesting! Of course, dark Anne of Green Gables got my attention! Stacked! 2w

Sometimes my head is simply not in the right place to fully appreciate a story. And sometimes the printed word is seared into my memory more than audio. That‘s my excuse for not recalling the details of this heart-wrenching story. So today for an IRL bookclub I sat right here and reread about this family and the mother too ill-equipped to love her living children as children deserve to be loved. I won‘t forget again.

BooknerdsLife One of my favorite reads this year! 🙌🏼📚🖤 1mo

I did a little library trip and picked up this beauty! I‘ve never read any of Jesmyn Ward‘s books, but I‘ve heard great things. If you are doing the @bookriot #readharderchallenge2019 this qualifies for the “book by a woman and/or AOC (Author of Color) that won a literary award in 2018” category. Have you guys read any of her books? What did you think? Let me know!!

This story was about profound love, trauma, addiction, racism, healing, incarceration and all the painful ways these things interact with each other. It was gutting and sweet, paradoxically. I listened to the audiobook and I think this would be better in print. I was confused about the timelines and characters for a bit (one is a ghost!) I read an outline online and that sorted me out!

2019 Book 15: Not sure what I just read. This is weird. Mystical. And when it was over, I‘m still not sure what happened. I don‘t really know how to review it, but it‘s not a book I will recommend. ⭐️⭐️ I hate when I hear great things about a book and it falls flat for me. 😢

I had an unfortunate experience listening to this book. The story is told from multiple points of view, each chapter/section beginning with a different narrator. And being a modern novel, the events aren't necessarily relayed in chronological order. It wasn't until I was about 3 hours in, that a track started with "Chapter 2..." and I discovered my ipod was stuck in shuffle mode.

I think it would have been a four-star read if I heard it in order.

What are you reading? I'm reading Sing Unburied Sing tonight, along with some Indonesian fried rice or its called nasi goreng. I thought the subject of the book would make some slow read but surprisingly not and I've started only yesterday and already half way through (which is rare for me😅) It's about a boy with drug addicted mother & father who was in jail, a dysfunction family with race issues. The story is told, mostly between Jojo‘s and Leonie‘s points of view. There is a 3rd POV, Richie. I could have done without Richie and his story altogether. Could have done without the ghosts and magical realism. I didn‘t like Leonie or Michael, but I did like Jojo and Kayla, and Pop, their grandfather. There was some back and forth in time, especially at the start of the book. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Overall, I‘m rating ok. I did like the dysfunctional family storyline, and would have preferred the book stick to that part of the story. 4mo

I liked parts of this book, particularly the sections about JoJo and the relationships he has with his sister and Pop. But the rest of it kind of fell flat for me. The story felt too scattered and the different points of view not well defined. I listened to the audiobook, which used separate actors for each character, and I think if I had not had the different voices to distinguish them from each other, I might have been confused. Just so-so.

BooknerdsLife I think it‘s the switch of different POV making the story quite choppy but besides that, I do love the writing and I love the story of Richie. I agree with you regarding the ghost element as well, is it even necessary? 🤔 4mo
