Sing, Unburied, Sing
Sing, Unburied, Sing | Jesmyn Ward
A searing and profound Southern odyssey by National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward. In Jesmyn Ward s first novel since her National Book Award winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural twenty-first-century America. Drawing on Morrison and Faulkner, The Odyssey and the Old Testament, Ward gives us an epochal story, a journey through Mississippi s past and present that is both an intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle. Ward is a major American writer, multiply awarded and universally lauded, and in Sing, Unburied, Sing she is at the height of her powers. Jojo and his toddler sister, Kayla, live with their grandparents, Mam and Pop, and the occasional presence of their drug-addicted mother, Leonie, on a farm on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Leonie is simultaneously tormented and comforted by visions of her dead brother, which only come to her when she s high; Mam is dying of cancer; and quiet, steady Pop tries to run the household and teach Jojo how to be a man. When the white father of Leonie s children is released from prison, she packs her kids and a friend into her car and sets out across the state for Parchman farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, on a journey rife with danger and promise. Sing, Unburied, Sing grapples with the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power, and limitations, of the bonds of family. Rich with Ward s distinctive, musical language, Sing, Unburied, Sing is a majestic new work and an essential contribution to American literature."

Not my typical choice, but it was the selected book for the library‘s citywide read, so I figured it must be good. It was. It reminded me of a lot of different genres: Native American mythology, African mythology, “typical” fiction with a story arc and realistic characters— it had a lot. And it was heavy. Every tough topic was discussed: race, gender, age, DV, death... this story isn‘t for the faint of heart, but it‘s worth it.

Beautiful, heart-breaking, exhilarating. Ward is so brilliant. Each sentence is so intentional and makes you ache. Finished this in just a few days (fast for me).
Huge content warning for drug use/addiction and violence (especially racial violence).

A beautifully written and heartbreaking tale of how the past is never really behind us. JoJo is a 13 year old biracial boy dealing with his drug-addicted mother and imprisoned father. His black grandparents are raising him and his baby sister, while his white grandparents refuse to acknowledge his existence. His mother takes them on a road trip to pick up his newly-released father. Healthy doses of magical realism!

Congratulations on 100,000, @GrilledCheeseSamurai 🎉!

Choosing one favorite read of 2019, as per the rules of your #SixDigitSamurai #giveaway, is ridiculously hard! I‘ve read a handful of books this year that could easily make it on to a list of my favorite books of all time (not just this year). 😵 Edging slightly ahead of the pack is the tagged book. It‘s my favorite kind of ghost story: subtle, heartbreaking, & gorgeously-written.

From the first sentence Jesmyn Ward has picked up my heart and is carrying it in her hands. I‘m tense because I‘m not sure if she‘s going to crush it or even give it back to me. I want to protect her 12 year old protagonist Jojo so much that I can‘t breathe in some places. But Ward isn‘t writing a thriller, isn‘t trying to push my buttons, her depiction of a life and a history is made brutal because it‘s authentic and one we rarely hear. 5 stars.

Centique I think Jojo is my favourite character of Ward‘s, but Salvage the Bones is probably my overall favourite of her novels. Both 5 stars though! 1mo

While I found myself intrigued during various parts of this story, I was never super excited to get back to it after setting it down. For that reason, I am giving this a "so-so" rating.

I have mixed feelings about this novel. I enjoyed parts of the story, but I also found myself bored or confused with other aspects. It seemed to get stuck in the mystical stuff and lost momentum. I also disliked the narrators which can really distort my opinion of a book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 it‘s not a bad book by any means. It‘s beautifully written, but I guess I was hoping for more. I am still giving it a Pick though because there were a couple times I couldn‘t wait to pick it back up to see what was going to happen. Jojo‘s mama in the story... sheesh, I wanted to smack some sense into her. The ghosts were kind of killing it for me, but I think I get it? Anyway, three and a half stars from me.

In Sing, Unburied, Sing, each character seeks a return home. Home, however, is not so much a place as it is a kind of peace, a song combining generations old and new. We can only go home when we have our biggest questions answered—answers that allow us to forgive. And if we cannot forgive, we remain as ghosts, crying out to the living who know pain well enough to recognize and respond to its call.

I don‘t buy used books, but I had to get out of the hustle and bustle of the streets of NOLA and visit Beckham‘s Bookshop. These two elderly gentlemen (one presumably was Mr. Beckham) were restoring some old books and it was neat watching them. They did have a small section of new books featuring Louisiana in them. So my husband bought me one for my birthday 😁

Choosing my #top6reads for 2019 thus far was challenging! I totally could‘ve doubled this.

I listened to the top row on audio (but I‘m sure they‘d stand up in print; I *strongly* suggest you listen to “Sadie,” though. The format really lends itself to voice performance).

The book on the bottom left is a classic; bottom middle is poetry; bottom right has a dark “Anne of Green Gables” vibe (& my love for it is a bit of an #unpopularopinion).

Librarybelle I thought Sing Unburied Sing was good! And, you‘ve totally sold me on the dark Anne of Green Gables vibe book! 3mo
monalyisha @Librarybelle A caveat: don‘t expect it to be *too* similar! But it‘s like, what might‘ve happened if things went horribly, sadly wrong. Same orphaned child desperate for love. Same immediate connection with the male figure. Same gorgeous, natural setting. But mysterious, tragic, & hidden in fog. 3mo
Librarybelle 👍 3mo
tjwill Orphan of Salt Winds sounds interesting! Of course, dark Anne of Green Gables got my attention! Stacked! 3mo

Sometimes my head is simply not in the right place to fully appreciate a story. And sometimes the printed word is seared into my memory more than audio. That‘s my excuse for not recalling the details of this heart-wrenching story. So today for an IRL bookclub I sat right here and reread about this family and the mother too ill-equipped to love her living children as children deserve to be loved. I won‘t forget again.

BooknerdsLife One of my favorite reads this year! 🙌🏼📚🖤 4mo

This story was about profound love, trauma, addiction, racism, healing, incarceration and all the painful ways these things interact with each other. It was gutting and sweet, paradoxically. I listened to the audiobook and I think this would be better in print. I was confused about the timelines and characters for a bit (one is a ghost!) I read an outline online and that sorted me out!
