More of Powell‘s Books, the happiest place on Earth (I don‘t care what that giant mouse says)! I didn‘t have a huge book haul (picture to be posted later). I have SO MANY books at home that I haven‘t read!!! And the truth is that my physical space is getting scarce. These days, a place on my tbr list dies not guarantee a place on my shelves! Pretty satisfying end to the trilogy, but a little bloated in parts. Fanning‘s story needed to be told, but not sure if we needed his WHOLE life story. Also, not sure that not getting the girl you love (when you did have a chance and didn‘t go for it) is reason enough for wiping out the entire human race. I‘m just sayin‘! 😜 Glad Amy got to share her story so it would be remembered, but again—way too much info about those characters at the end.

Life After Life: A Novel | Kate Atkinson
post image
Pickpick

This is a well-written book based on a rather odd premise. It‘s like Groundhog Day for life. It starts with Ursula Todd‘s birth on a snowy night in 1910. The doctor fails to arrive in time and the baby is stillborn, the cord wrapped around her neck. The next thing we know, the story resets and starts over. The story continues like this, resetting each time she dies. I never understood why. Why her? Is it magic? No answers, but a good story anyway.

Erofan A great story that made me wonder how I would have lived my life if I had a lot of chances! 4mo
Emilyrjones22 I loved this book so much! 4mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Erofan @Emilyrjones22 I don‘t know. It was an interesting story—I love the time period that it covers. I guess I just didn‘t really see the point. Of course all of our lives are a maze defined by our choices, with the slightest variations ending in widely divergent paths, but this seems to be a given. What is the theme here? What is the author‘s purpose or message? Except for a dim instinctual avoidance of some situations, what does Ursula learn? 4mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit I know Groundhog Day is a hackneyed comparison, but at least we see the MC learn from his experiences and grow from a jerk into a decent person. Ursula seems to be a decent person throughout who doesn‘t really remember her other experiences (not consciously) so can‘t really learn from them. It‘s just a matter of chance, basically. I felt a little cheated at the end by the randomness. Maybe that was the point! What do you think? 4mo

This was pretty good. Lots of scary action. The main character, Ollie, gets annoying with his constant denial of what‘s happening and determined announcements that “everything is fine” when everything is clearly not! His excuses become such a reach that it‘s ridiculous. Also, the constant references to his two website customers is confusing, since they ultimately have nothing to do with what‘s going on. Spooky, though!

I doubted Neil Gaiman on this one and shouldn‘t have! It starts off like one of those wistful, nostalgic trips down memory lane to childhood, but the story quickly grew teeth. The narrator (a 6-7 year old boy) of course does EVERYTHING wrong—the exact opposite of what he‘s told to do, so everything that happens is pretty much his fault, but it‘s an interesting story. Never doubt Neil!!

GingerAntics It does seem so weird at the beginning, but it was great. Loved this. I agree. Never doubt Neil. 4mo

It has an old-fashioned vibe to it (think Victoria Holt or Mary Stewart) but still pretty good. I immediately knew who the villain was, although not the how or why. The MC, a young woman, seems to make all the wrong choices, as they always do, but it is pretty entertaining.

The end of the trilogy. I liked the story, but I‘ve read other reviews that say Uncle Stevie threw in the towel on crime drama on this one and returned to his roots, and I would have to agree. Everybody‘s favorite psycho, Brady Hartsfield, who seemed out for the count, is back with a vengeance, and with a few new tricks up his sleeve. Suddenly, he‘s acquired some interesting new powers that he plans to do all kinds of evil with. Recommended!

This is a fictionalized account of a true story—the bitter rivalry between two paleontologists in the Wild West. Read this with a group of Litsy ladies—definitely made it much more fun! Interesting from a historical and cultural perspective, and well-written. The meandering structure is different from most of our modern works—it doesn‘t seem to have any type of goal in mind and even keeps going after the title character dies. Still, it is one of the first recorded books ever written, about a thousand years ago, so worth reading!

Okay, did anyone else have a problem with the older princess just abandoning her sister to a possible rapist? “She felt terrible for her sister, who was innocently sleeping away, and it broke her heart to imagine what would happen.” Are you kidding me?? As the older sister, shouldn‘t she take care of the younger? Wouldn‘t they both have been safer together? Surely Kaoru would have been hampered by the presence of the sister; ⬇️ #Genji #genji47

CindyMyLifeIsLit surely he wouldn‘t try to get it on with her right there! Or would he . . , ? 😜. I would think one reluctant partner would be all he could handle at a time. While the older princess is hiding outside, taking care of herself, it says that he didn‘t force himself on her, and spent the night talking. But then it says “he did not want to leave with his desires unsated.” So? Did he or didn‘t he? (edited) 5mo
saresmoore Ugh, this was upsetting. I think he didn‘t, but staying the night in intimate talking was still a scandalous choice. I could be misremembering, though. 🤔 5mo
SoniaC Yes just one of the many disturbing aspects of the story. I have come to believe that there was not a concept of rape at that time. The men were highly entitled. 5mo
Daisey I was also really frustrated by the older sister‘s choices and wondered the same. It seemed to me that it would have been better for the sisters to stay together at this point. 5mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit @SoniaC I agree that the men didn‘t really see it as rape. It seems to be just another step in the courtship process: first you woo her with gifts and poetry, and if that doesn‘t work, you sneak into her room and stake your claim! But the older Princess didn‘t even ATTEMPT to save her sister—that‘s what bothers me! She didn‘t want it to happen to herself, but she let it happen to her sister! 😡 5mo
