The writing of this family saga was heartfelt. You could feel the love this author has for her characters. It is a straightforward multigenerational tale of a black family living in a country that is deadly. Well deserved nomination for The Womens Prize and The Aspen Words Prize. 3 🌟 #52bookclub23 #womensprize #citynameintitle @Clwojick @BookBelle84 @jennifer80 @Librarybelle @triplem80 @AshleyHoss820 @LauraReads @KarenUK @britt_brooke

Three months into the year and I managed to read books for 32 of the 52 prompts of the challenge.
These were the easy ones of course, now on to the second quarter of the year!

Cinfhen Fantastic 🥳im curious where I am at the 1/4 mark ⁉️ you red some fabulous books 😍 2d
LeeRHarry That‘s so good! I‘m making slow but steady progress 😄 2d

Suet624 Fantastic! 2d
TrishB Cool 👍🏻 2d
ravenlee I‘m close to that number myself. Now I‘m having to make a deliberate effort to find books for the challenge, instead of having books I‘m already reading work. And my reporting has been awful! 2d
AshleyHoss820 That is amazing!! I love this! 2d
Deblovestoread Great Progress! As I have been reading I‘ve been able to finds prompts to fit the book. I think I‘m at the point I where I‘ll need to find books for the remaining prompts. I‘m at 21 out of 52. 2d
BarbaraBB @ravenlee I actually like that I now have to find books for the prompts, it‘s been so easy so far! 2d
squirrelbrain Some great books here! I need to post mine too. I don‘t think I‘m as far ahead as you; maybe somewhere in the 20s…I shall have to consult my spreadsheet(s)! 2d
Bluebird Awesome!! 2d
LaraReads This is so great! Really good job & amazing reads. I‘m definitely behind on this, but still having so much fun! 2d

This series, at least for me, just seems to keep getting better and better. What starts as one potential crime leads to a murder that Brunetti has to solve. As with the others in the series, darker subject matters and IRL issues are presented. Leon‘s turns of phrases are at times poetic and descriptive and at other times biting and sarcastic. On to the next!

Bluebird I‘ve had this series in my queue for a few years. It sounds great! I hope to start it soon—i‘m just trying to read deeper into my ongoing series before starting new ones. 🥺 1w
Librarybelle @Bluebird Totally understand that! I have so many series going, it‘s ridiculous! 1w
Cinfhen Great review!! Do you think my 80 year old dad would like this series?? He‘s become a real reader in the past few years and he‘s constantly asking me for suggestions…Unfortunately he likes James Patterson, Brad Meltzer, Lee Child and David Baldacci so I‘m out of my reading comfort zone 😜 1w

Librarybelle @Cinfhen He might! I think Donna Leon is a deeper writer than Patterson, if that makes sense…there‘s more layers to the writing than the quick reads from the authors he likes. That being said, it took me several books into the series for everything to click for me - I really appreciate her approach right now. And, it‘s in Venice, so very European. 1w
Librarybelle @Cinfhen Has he tried Stuart Woods? I‘m not a fan, but he‘s an author similar to Patterson and Baldacci…short chapters, cliffhangers at the end of each chapter, fast reads. 1w
Cinfhen Ha! I think you nailed the type of reader my dad is….I‘ll suggest Stuart Woods! Thanks so much, Jess xxx 7d

“Perhaps one day… there will be a safer time, when women could walk the Earth, shining bright with power, and yet live.”

I adored this witchy tale about the strength women can possess within when they allow themselves to find it. It weaves 3 stories over 4 centuries, and I loved the way it all came together, especially in the second half of the book.

LeeRHarry Yes! I loved this one! Picked up the US copy whilst I was over there on holiday 😊 it‘s gorgeous! 1w
LaraReads @LeeRHarry yes! So gorgeous! And it rarely happens that the US covers are better than the UK ones, but this one wins! 1w
Cinfhen I‘m so put off on witchy tales since reading When women could Fly but this book sounds & looks great!!!! I might have to #BorrowNotBuy (edited) 1w
Cinfhen LOVE your photo ♥️Hope you‘re feeling better!!! 1w
squirrelbrain @cinfhen - I read the two books almost at the same time, and this one is NOTHING like The Women Could Fly. (ie it‘s fabulous!) 🤣 1w
Cinfhen Ha 🤭 @squirrelbrain 🙌🏻✨Hopefully I‘ll borrow it next month on #Scribd 1w

I loved the premise. A 19th century London mystery. A female spiritualist who conjures murder victims in order to identify the killer. The men‘s club, London Seance Society, does spiritualism for profit and appears to have a fraudulent element within it‘s membership. The two collide….
The pacing was slow and uneven. I enjoyed parts of the book, couldn‘t wait to finish others. I knew where this was going early on and there were no surprises. ⬇️

Bluebird On the upside: i loved the author‘s note with the historical background. I went down a rabbit hole looking into the Ghost Club and the Garrick Club. And, she has recipes for Victorian funeral biscuits and how to make a three layer candle. Really well researched book, so quite disappointing. (edited) 2w
Librarybelle I‘m very excited to read this. I really enjoyed her debut: 2w

LaraReads Sorry it was a bit of a miss for you! I‘ve been wondering about this one. 1w
Bluebird @Librarybelle i‘ve had Lost Apothecary on my TBR list for awhile, it sounds great! Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I hope to read it soon. Sadly, I naturally gravitate to the shiny new books instead. Terrible habit! Lol. 1w

I happily devoured this fifth in the Midsomer Murders series on audio. The character studies in each of these novels is remarkable, and this addition is no exception. Barnaby and Troy come off as cantankerous and crass, respectively, and the mystery and murder are so twisted. Great listen! #192025 #1996 #52BookClub23 #RelatedToTheWordMurder

Bluebird I‘ve been eyeing this series for awhile. I really must get to it soon! 2w

Not my favorite TJR read, but that may because I‘m not a fan of celebrity…and all that goes along with it. However, It was an integral theme to the book, so it was necessary. I most enjoyed the familial relationships and personal drama away from the privileged lifestyle—although the party scene was quite humorous—loved the surfing down the roof into the pool. Lol. #52bookclub23 #abookaboutsiblings

A fun read. A podcaster returns to teach a class, at the fancy boarding school of her childhood where she was an outsider and her once roommate was murdered. Reads like a mystery, layered with interesting takes on the #metoo movement and grooming, collective memory, race and privilege, the exploitative nature of true crime, wrongful imprisonment and so much more. Sharp and nuanced, I found the ending unsatisfying but all the more realistic for it.

LeeRHarry Good to hear, I have it out from the library and it‘s my next ebook I want to get to - forgot about the mythology prompt for 52books23 so thanks for the reminder 😊 3w
Librarybelle Sounds intriguing…especially the funny bits! 3w
squirrelbrain I‘m reading this at the moment but not loving it yet - it feels a bit scattered to me, with too many characters. 3w
rmaclean4 @squirrelbrain there are several storylines, but they pull together in the end. Not my favorite of the Womens Prize long list, but glad I read it. 3w

“I try to remember another time when I felt like this and am sad because I can‘t remember a time, and happy, too, because I cannot.”

A quiet, lovely novella about a young Irish girl who goes to stay with distant relatives when her mother is having yet another baby and there are just so many mouths to feed. Full of phenomenal writing and filled with the most beautiful, yet simple, passages & messages. Highly recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

LaraReads Also, just realizing that the film based on it is nominated tonight at the Oscars for Best International Feature, which is super cool and I just HAVE to see it now! 3w
Librarybelle I keep saying I really need to read this one! 😂 3w
LaraReads @Librarybelle well, it‘s a super quick read/listen, yet quite impactful. 3w
