#RiseUpReads October 2025

I really liked this cozy mystery! I‘ll definitely read more in the series. It‘s great to see more diverse cozy mysteries being published in recent years.

Any other diverse cozy mysteries y‘all enjoy or have tried? I like Tita Rosie‘s Kitchen series

TheBookHippie I‘ve got it here yet. The month went off the rails a bit. I hope to get to it this week. 4d
IriDas This is not a genre I typically read, but I enjoyed it. I think it might have to do with working in an elementary school and being a single mom. I got a lot of the craziness that those two worlds create. 4d
willaful I enjoyed it, though not a fan of the love triangle. 4d

#RiseUpReads September

I loved The Wicked Bargain so much that it will be one of my favorite books of the year. I even read the sequel set in the same universe that happens after the first book but focuses on Dami.

What did y'all think?

Laughterhp Oops! Forgot to read this one! 1mo
See All 9 Comments
peanutnine I loved it!!! Definitely a new favorite. The historical setting was so detailed and the world building around demons and magic so interesting! I loved the found family vibes. And I really liked Dami's character so I'm excited to read their book soon 1mo
Jari-chan Totally agree! 💖💖 1mo
ElizaMarie I couldn't get into this one when I first tried. But hearing y'all's reviews makes me want to see if I could do another attempt. Did y'all do audio or physical? Did that make a difference? 1mo
IriDas We were moving last month so I only just started it today. Audiobook. My youngest and I had to go to his doctor who is about 1.5 hrs away so we read it there and back. So far, it‘s very enjoyable. We both like it. Can‘t wait to see where the story takes us. 1mo
peanutnine @ElizaMarie I did audio and thought it really brought the story to life! 1mo

I apologize for the delay in getting this posted. For the remainder of the year I will just have one discussion post where you can share any thoughts you have on the book.

I really liked the book! I've always found Día de Muertos to be such a fascinating tradition. Too bad the sequel doesn't come out until fall 2026

See All 11 Comments
ElizaMarie I really enjoyed this one. We celebrate Dia de los Muertos - of course, not the way the book does. but... still. I love the discussion of culture, family, and love that was found in this book. Also, the story itself was captivating. 2mo

#RiseUpReads

I really resonated with this book as a fat femme with multiple chronic illnesses. One of which I'm still trying to get a diagnosis for even though I've been dealing with it my whole life. I'm newer to the disabled community so this book was a great learning tool for myself. One of my goals is to find and build disabled support for myself both online and local.

What did y'all think of the book? Anything that stood out?

See All 8 Comments
TheBookHippie I agree community is necessary. I enjoyed the read. 3mo
willaful Something I really liked is the inclusion of “Mad“ as a disability, and talking about being crazy. A lot of people think crazy is an ableist term so I have trained myself to avoid it online, but it really resonates with me. Sometimes I just feel crazy and that is the right word!

I also liked the term “horizontal empathy,“ a way of being that gets very little respect or understanding.
(edited) 3mo
IriDas I learned a lot from the book and found it both encouraging and challenging. I liked that she didn‘t sugarcoat the difficulties of creating and maintaining community. It opened my eyes to a lot of ableism that I participate in even though I have disabled kids and try to examine my thoughts and actions about this and other internalized isms. 3mo
Eggbeater There were several points the author made that were helpful to me, and I was glad for the emphasis on specific difficulties for marginalized communities. So often, they are overlooked. I was also glad they included Multiple Chemical Sensitivity as a disability. It is not widely recognized, but my uncle has it, and he suffers terribly and can hardly leave his house. 3mo
Eggbeater Also, for me, it was helpful to be able to recognize my own internalized ableism and the need for a connection with a disabled community to help me. 3mo

I've been learning embroidery! My 1st piece is on the left & my 2nd is on the right. 🏳️‍⚧️❤️

I got these kits from a small business called Capital Stitch Co. It comes with everything you need to make it. Thread, fabric, hoop, bobbins, pattern stabilizer, & even a needle!

BTW thank you for all the love & excitement over this new chapter! I promise I will get to everyone's comments & posts as soon as I can ❤️

Show and Tell | Patricia Relf

2025 has been rough. I haven't had the bandwidth to do anything with #LitsyCrafters the 1st half of the year. I didn't have the interest to do anything creative until the end of May. But I'm getting back into creating & I want to share that joy with y'all.
So I'm starting #ShowAndTellTuesday 🌟I want to bring some nostalgia & that excitement you had as a kid when it was Show & Tell day at school & you got to show off something you were proud of⬇️

Catsandbooks Each week share anything creative you've made or been working on now or in the past. This can be any type of art, writing, photo, or even food you made. You can post using the image I made above or one of your own. Use the tags #LitsyCrafters & #ShowAndTellTuesday & tag me (@catsandbooks) so we can give you all the gold stars & hype you deserve! 💖🌟 Everyone is welcome! 4mo

I haven't seen anything on Litsy about the controversy surrounding these books so I wanted to post something. The 3 books above (Rose in Chains, The Irresistible urge to fall for your enemy, and Alchemised) all originated as HP fan fiction and are/will be trad pub. The trans community has been very clear that this is harmful to them. We all know that JKR is anti-trans and uses her evil money to harm the trans community. ⬇️

Catsandbooks When HP material is promoted in any way it continues to drive support to JKR. These books are being promoted as HP fan fiction and therefore supporting Moldemort's IP. She is also known to be litigious when it comes to her IP, so there's no way that she would allow this promotion without signing off on it. Please listen to trans people when they say something is harmful to them! 4mo
Catsandbooks Unfortunately I already ordered subscription boxes containing these books before I knew they were harmful. When I get them I will be selling them and donating the money to the Trans Youth Emergency Project hosted by the Campaign for Southern Equality. https://southernequality.org/tyep/ 4mo
5feet.of.fury 💜 great post! I will be avoiding those books also. 4mo

seibelsays Dang, 2 of those books were on my wishlist. Thanks for spreading awareness! 4mo
lil1inblue Thank you for raising awareness. I was unaware of this story! 💓 4mo
BookBr I didn‘t read about this until after I read Rose in Chains and it‘s so disappointing. Selling the books and donating the money to trans support is such a good idea and I will be following suit. (edited) 4mo

See All 7 Comments
Librarybelle No, other than lavash. 4mo
ElizaMarie I haven't, but I'd like to try. I feel like I have tried Lavash, but it might be similar to the Injera (the Ethiopian food bread/tortilla thing). 4mo
lil1inblue Sarmas are so good! I have been to an AMAZING Armenian restaurant in Chicago. It was delicious - really activated the umami! Here's the website if anyone is ever interested - I highly recommend. I'll be going back next time I'm there. https://sayatnovachicago.com/ 4mo
Julsmarshall When I was young, we lived in Fresno, CA for a few years and there was (and is) a large Armenian community and there was a restaurant we loved. It has been too long since I‘ve enjoyed that delicious food and this book made me long for it! 4mo

PuddleJumper Take care of yourself. We can wait. I did enjoy the food and cultural aspect of the book, the romance was a bit meh for me 4mo
Librarybelle I hope you feel better! The references to Armenian culture and food were fascinating. I was not fully engage with the book, but I think that‘s due to the audiobook narration. 4mo
AmyG Hope you find yourself feeling better soon. 4mo
ElizaMarie I hope you feel more like yourself soon. Chronic issues definitely affect your mental health - please protect it at all cost. Anyway, the book, the MC kinda annoyed me, like she didn't seem likable, and was too caught up with her x, and then the love interest between the 2 didn't really read well to me. Overwhelming family dynamics transcend cultures, so I enjoyed that aspect of the book. 4mo
Julsmarshall I liked the competition, enjoyed the food and family components but thought the romantic relationship fell a little flat. Still happy I read it and need to go and find some Armenian food 😍 (edited) 4mo

Story was an ode to K-dramas

Rise and popularity of K-dramas

Have you seen any? The only one I've seen that is close is XO, Kitty on Netflix

#riseupreads

Top right is more artwork from the FairyLoot special edition

Melismatic I‘ve watched a few dramas bc they often have idol pop stars from music groups I like in them. Very velveeta cheesey but usually very fun. 5mo
See All 11 Comments
peanutnine I've actually never really watched any k dramas 5mo
willaful I started one that a friend recommended and I did enjoy it, but I'm really bad about watching things with subtitles. I don't remember what it was called but each episode was a different period in the life of the hero/heroine (started when she was a little girl, IIRC) and they were played by different people each time, which was a little hard to get used to! I think loss of memory was involved. 5mo
PuddleJumper Anyone that likes the book would probably enjoy Korean Odyssey, I could see a lot of similarities with reading.

My absolute faves that I rewatch are Semantic Error, university enemies to lovers, and Kingdom, historical political drama with zombies.
5mo
PuddleJumper Other supernatural themed romance dramas I would recommend are Tale of the Nine Tailed Fox, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, and Alchemy of Souls.

5mo
PuddleJumper @willaful Find Me in Your Memory? Popular drama from 2020 I think 5mo
willaful This would have been before 2020. 5mo
IriDas I haven‘t watched any k-dramas. I don‘t have cable and my only subscription service is Crunchyroll. :D But the book was still good without having watched any. :) 5mo

Did you have this author's note in the version you read?

Loved all the Korean mythological creatures

peanutnine Helpful links, thanks! The author's note was actually included in the audiobook, which I was surprised at as that is not always the case. It is interesting to see what parts were interpreted! I loved all the creatures mentioned but sometimes I wasn't sure how to picture them 5mo
PuddleJumper I never read author notes 😅 5mo
IriDas The audio had the author‘s note. I don‘t know anything about Korean myths but I had assumed it would be like retelling of Greek myths that folks do these days. Where they change some things for the sake of the story. 5mo

Overall thoughts? Any favorite parts?

I loved the banter between Seokga and Hani! Definitely looking forward to the sequel!

Above is artwork from the FairyLoot special edition

Melismatic The banter was my favorite part - very k-drama! 5mo
See All 7 Comments
peanutnine Oooo gorgeous art! I did love the banter. And I loved the world building! How all the creatures lived among the humans and interacted with the gods was interesting 5mo
PuddleJumper I found it very shallow and the main characters intensely irritating. I enjoyed the mythology and wanted more of that and world building and less of the main characters 🤣 5mo
AnnCrystal That artwork 🤩🎨🖌️💝. 5mo
IriDas I enjoyed it. It reminded me a little of the gods portions of the Iliad. I liked the way the main characters ended up making each other better “people” by the end. 5mo
