Everybody knows someone who needs killing. This little book is several linked short stories where the elderly lady of the title takes care of those people in her life. It got a bit too repetitive and the final story was a retelling of one already told, just from a different perspective. Over all, it was okay but... As expected I was the book club curmudgeon on this one. The writing was pedestrian, the characters not engaging, the ending easy and unearned, and more. Even being interested in Russia didn‘t help this book succeed for me. #unpopularopinion Full review at https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2019/03/review-winter-garden-by-kristin-hannah....

I generally don‘t do sci-fi but this one came highly recommended. I really enjoyed it and when one of my book clubs agreed to read it, they asked me to facilitate the meeting, which meant I had to write book club questions for it. A friend who works for the publisher passed them onto the editor and they might use my questions in an official capacity. Between a pick and a so-so, this is the fictionalized story of Consuelo Vanderbilt, who marries into the British aristocracy becoming the Duchess of Marlborough. It‘s a first person narrative but superficial even so but it does give a good overview into the life of the caring, philanthropic person she became despite her unhappy marriage. The Librarian: A Novel | Larry Beinhart

Although I don‘t use the library anymore (don‘t throw stones, I have reasons I‘ll list in the comments), I will never forget my childhood librarian, Miss Zigger. I was even invited to her wedding.

Picture compliments of Pickford Community Library in Pickford,MI

BookNAround Reason #1 Libraries have this irrational interest in having their books returned. 3w
BookNAround Reason #2 Libraries want me to read a book when it‘s available rather than when the mood strikes me 4 years later. 3w
BookNAround Reason #3 Working in the industry means I often get books long before the library. 3w
See All 13 Comments
BookNAround Reason #4 In theory I‘m reading from my own out of control library and don‘t need another source of temptation. 3w
BookNAround Reason #5 The last time I checked a book out, it was on the boat I sank so I very shamefacedly had to fess up to ruining their lovely, new book and pay for it. Library bound copies are more expensive than regular books so I would have come out ahead by not borrowing it. They would have come out ahead too by not having boneheaded me flood their book. 3w
BookNAround Reason #6 If I lost a library book in this house, I‘d never find it again. And given the book state of my house, I lose books with shocking regularity. (See above on cost of library books.) 3w
Clwojick 😂😆 3w
kspenmoll 🙌🏻😂😂 3w
Birdsong28 I get what you mean as especially point number 2 as I don't always feel in the mood to read a certain book but if I do go into my library I feel I have to get it and read it. Also I have recently 'returned' to my library as it is slightly out of the way in my town so it's harder to just 'pop in' but I do prefer to buy as I can read it in my own time. I also echo your sentiment. Also I definitely get point number 4 lol!!! 3w
CarolynM Your reasons 1 and 2 are the reasons I only use the library as a last resort. Reasons 4 and 6 also relevant to me😂 3w
TheSpineView 🤣 3w
Geeklet I love libraries and I think they‘re a wonderful resource. I‘m also incredibly lazy and it‘s way easier for me to buy a book than drive across town. Like, an unbelievable level of lazy. It‘s all the way over there and I‘m here. 3w
Melissa_J I use the library, it just happens to be located in my home 😂 3w

Hope your son has a great time. 😁 1mo
BookNAround @rretzler My older daughter went with a friend her junior year but I think girls are more comfortable going with friends than boys are. My older son went as a junior but not as a senior when the girl her asked said she wasn‘t going to go but then ended up going with another guy instead. It was heartbreaking, especially since all three are in this neighborhood so there was no hiding the situation. ☹️ 1mo

rretzler That‘s too bad! ☹️ Sometimes kids can be so thoughtless. My son has a lot of really good friends, but they are not very social in a prom sort of way. BookNAround @CoverToCoverGirl I don‘t know old books well enough to say if the 1744 on the title page is actually the publication date or not. There‘s a lot of handwritten stuff (all faded and in German) inside the front cover that is dated 1844. 1mo

BookNAround @PickwickPlockPlock Thanks so much for that info. Fascinating stuff. It‘s from my grandfather‘s family and they came over here from Steinheim much later than the book was published so they must have brought it with them on the boat over. 1mo
LeahBergen Very cool! And what @mrsmarch said - 1744 is the pub year. I quite often find that later owners note the year and their name in antiquarian books. What a lovely bit of family history! 1mo
CoverToCoverGirl Sooo cool... my oldest book hails from Scotland and was published in 1718.. it was rescued by a Good Samaritan from a box put out for fall clean up — heading straight to the nearest land fill site— and brought to me. 😊 I‘ve never understood why someone would discard such a treasure so callously. 😡🤷‍♀️ 1mo

A novel about a Jewish woman who wakes up in a field missing ten years of her life and the absent German bookstore owner who loved her, the story is told in two timelines: Hanna rebuilding her life post Holocaust and Max telling the story of their lives as Hitler rises to power. There is a small speculative fiction piece to this as well. Full review at https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2019/02/review-in-another-time-by-jillian-canto...

rretzler I am so fascinated by this period in history and there are too few books about the average German citizen and how they managed during wartime, so I‘m always interested when I find one that even remotely seems to fit. 1mo
BookNAround @rretzler There‘s actually not much during the war since Max‘s story is in the years leading up to it and Hanna‘s story is after it but there‘s some and it definitely makes you think about what the average German (Jews and Gentiles alike) thought as Hitler became more and more powerful. 1mo
