It's Elementary | Elise Bryant

A fast-paced, completely delightful new mystery about what happens when parents get a little too involved in their kids' schools, from NAACP Image Award nominee Elise Bryant. Mavis Miller is not a PTA mom. She has enough on her plate with her feisty seven-year-old daughter, Pearl, an exhausting job at a nonprofit, and the complexities of a multigenerational household. So no one is more surprised than Mavis when she caves to Trisha Holbrook, the long-reigning, slightly terrifying PTA president, and finds herself in charge of the schools brand-new DEI committee. As one of the few Black parents at this California elementary school, Mavis tries to convince herself this is an opportunity for real change. But things go off the rails at the very first meeting, when the new principal's plans leave Trisha absolutely furious. Later that night, when Mavis spies Trisha in yellow rubber gloves and booties, lugging cleaning supplies and giant black trash bags to her waiting minivan, its only natural that her mind jumps to somewhere it surely wouldnt in the light of day. Except Principal Smith fails to show up for work the next morning, and has been MIA since the meeting. Determined to get to the bottom of things, Mavis, along with the school psychologist with the great forearms (look, its worth noting), launches an investigation that will challenge her views on parenting, friendship, and elementary school politics. Brilliantly written, It's Elementary is a quick-witted, escapist romp that perfectly captures just how far parents will go to give their kids the very best, all wrapped in a mystery that will leave you guessing to the very end.

#RiseUpReads October 2025

I really liked this cozy mystery! I‘ll definitely read more in the series. It‘s great to see more diverse cozy mysteries being published in recent years.

Any other diverse cozy mysteries y‘all enjoy or have tried? I like Tita Rosie‘s Kitchen series

TheBookHippie I‘ve got it here yet. The month went off the rails a bit. I hope to get to it this week. 3w
IriDas This is not a genre I typically read, but I enjoyed it. I think it might have to do with working in an elementary school and being a single mom. I got a lot of the craziness that those two worlds create. 3w
willaful I enjoyed it, though not a fan of the love triangle. 3w

I laughed to find this at the end of the book, because I thought about When No One Is Watching several times while reading this, although it's far less terrifying.

A single mom with way too much on her plate--including the stress of being one of very few Black parents in her daughter's school--finds herself getting caught up in some very suspicious PTA drama. I liked the slice-of-life parts of the story, but Mavis go on my nerves a bit. (cont.)

willaful The end made me think Bryant is setting up a Janet Evanovich type of series, which isn't really my cuppa so I don't know if I'll continue reading.

Normally, I wouldn't pick a book with these colors on the cover, but it's for one of the reading groups here on Litsy. Also, normally, I wouldn't read anything someone considers cozy. Not because I have a problem with them, but they don't usually seem to end up in my TBR. Glad I read this one. I recommend it if you need a light read with what are actually heavy themes. And, especially so if you work or have a child in elementary school.😄

Subbing in the school library today. Bittersweet because this is the library where I‘d hoped to work. They still haven‘t hired a permanent person. Makes me feel kind of put out. They didn‘t even interview me.

willaful Irritating! I worked with a woman who finally gave up and moved to a healthcare office because she couldn't get hired for the library job she'd been doing for months. 🙄 2mo
Susanita Ugh. That‘s rude of them! 2mo
IriDas @willaful That‘s terrible and so disappointing. 2mo

IriDas @Susanita Yeah, I‘m not sure what‘s going on. The initial interview for the district, before the I was placed on the potentials list, was so odd. They didn‘t even ask me about my work with children or in libraries or my education. They seemed to want to know if I could push the paper and kiss the arses. I keep trying to convince myself it‘s probably better to just sub. :/ 2mo
dabbe They sound pretty f---ed up in not even giving you a chance to interview and show who you are. Maybe if they see you sub there, they'll give you an interview. If not, it's THEIR loss. 💛💜🩶 2mo
IriDas @dabbe I think it was a seniority issue or something but then they didn‘t hire anyone so they‘re just using a permanent substitute? 2mo
AnnCrystal I hope they finally give you an interview and the position 📚😘📚. 2mo

Haven‘t been around much because we are moving. This is our first morning in the new place. It was warm for most of the moving process, but yesterday the weather returned to our usual mild coastal weather. Hopefully it will stay that way since now we have to clean the old place. I hope to reign in the chaos before I have to go back to work in October. 😊

TheBookgeekFrau Congratulations!! 🎉🎊 May the unpacking process be swift and easy ☺️ 2mo

I‘m so excited this is the first book in a cozy mystery series because I freaking loved and totally related with Mavis charter! The characters and mystery were really solid and I enjoyed the little dash of romance. I am very excited to read the next book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a very fun, cozy mystery about a mom who maybe witnesses a crime and the chaos ensues. A fun collection of characters, some nice surprises and a little bit of romance. I look forward to more books with Mavis! 4.5⭐️

This was a cute, fun read. Enjoyed the blend of mystery and romance. The romance didn‘t overpower the mystery and the diverse cast of characters were all fully three dimensional and interesting. Although it was a mystery and there were some serious elements in it, it was also cheerful and uplifting. Really liked it.

This is my first Elise Bryant book and I very much enjoyed it. I enjoy mysteries and romance so this was a welcomed purchase for me. I do wish there were a few more twists in the book and that the ending was a bit more wrapped up, but I‘d give it a solid 3.7 ⭐️s.

I mostly enjoyed this audiobook. The PTA shenanigans were fun. The characters and their relationships were good. I liked the main character but she was kind of slow connecting the dots. I thought the narrator was great, but I can see how some of the voices might be irritating. Some of the details near the end made me want to scream “that's not how things work!“
