Trying to finish this one up, but I just can‘t with the mean girl stuff tonight.

Found out my work friend, who recently invited me to join her IRL bookclub, has been trashing me behind my back. So I lost a friend, a bookclub, and possibly a promotion.

I‘m less than two weeks away from my 40th birthday, which is entirely too forking old for this bullshirt.

Between race training and a cluster **** of a month at work, I only finished one book in February, but I‘m hoping I can catch up over Spring Break (in between Spring Training, the World Baseball Classic, and March Madness ⚾️ 🏀 📚).

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Hi friend! 👋 I hope all is well. I've been busy, too, but baseball is back so all is right in the world. 1mo

My March #Roll100 is VERY serious…😬

I‘ve never read The Catcher in the Rye, but I‘ve heard that usually the people who love it are the ones who first read it as angsty teens, and people who read it for the first time as adults hate it. Anyone else have any experience with this? Will it make a difference if I‘m an angsty adult?

thebackyardgnome I've noticrd that peoplr who come from cultures thst cultivste, for thr lack of better term, big emotions without necessarhily writing thrm off as someonr beinf dramatic right away trnd to enjoy it even as adults more oftrn - a lot of peiple I met from Slavic and Mditerrean areas still not so rarely hold it in high regsrd. It's interesthng. 1mo

Only a day late for #FoodAndLit #Uganda. I LOVED the Ugandan Rolex - I‘ll be using that technique again in the future (even though I cheated and used a store-bought tortilla instead of making the chapati. I was just too tired).
Not a lot to say about the book. I wish I knew more Ugandan history. It‘s worth reading for the Thank You Note chapter alone.

Looking forward to the Dominican Republic for February.

Catsandbooks Excellent! Looks tasty! 🇺🇬 2mo

Short stories about weddings for Valentines Day.

Well, okay, I guess The Historian doesn‘t really fit. But it‘s a chunkster, and it‘s highly unlikely that I‘ll finish before Halloween anyway, soooo…

What do you like to read when you‘re feeling lonely?

Having a pity party (but with spaghetti!). I‘m failing in every aspect in my life and feeling so lonely. My boss hates me, my family doesn‘t talk to me, and I‘m driving the few people who do talk to me crazy. I‘m just so over everything thing right now and I need anything that will make me feel better, even if just for a little bit.

slategreyskies Damn, that sucks. I suppose for me, when I‘m feeling lonely, I like escapism reads. Nothing that‘s gonna be a challenging read, but something that‘s just pure entertainment. Hope things settle for you soon. I know what it‘s like to be lonely. Hang in there. ❤️ 4mo

Hi #LMPBC Group A!! I replied to Deborah‘s email on Thursday, but I got an undeliverable response back, so I thought I‘d better ask here instead. First, Deborah, all your selections look great! I‘ll look through my stacks for some options for my book, but before I do, are there any subject matters/content issues I should look out for? Any genres that anyone in the group doesn‘t read? Any theme we want to stick to? As for me, I‘m open to anything!

Kimzey Thanks! I‘ll read almost anything. I‘m hoping to make progress on my TBR list, so can make suggestions from my shelves of unread books, once I know the wishes of the group. I‘ll go look for the email, which I apparently missed! 5mo
arubabookwoman HI Maggie--I rec'd your response in email, so your response was actually delivered to me. I've been traveling all week and just got home and haven't had time to respond further and make some final selections from my shelves. I will try to post/email tomorrow with a few books to make a final choice from. 5mo
arubabookwoman You may have got an undeliverable message because in the initial email I sent I mistyped Melanie's address. I later forwarded my message to her correct email, but if you hit "reply all" to my initial email, it had the wrong address for Melanie. Sorry for the confusion. 5mo

arubabookwoman Just in general I'm not a fan of horror, romance or YA. But I'll read anything if it's good. I like translated fiction, books set in other cultures, "classics in their own country" and as of now I'm thinking my choice might be in that category. 5mo

I was so sad to learn of Julie Powell‘s passing. I read Julie & Julia in my favorite class in college, and loved every minute of it. It was snarky and hilarious, but also really beautiful and poignant. I always point to the chapter this quote comes from when I try to sell this book. Powell spends an exhausting day searching all over NYC for a marrow bone for a recipe. When she finally gets it home, she realizes she has no way to actually…(cont‘d)

Julsmarshall So sad 😭 5mo
Maggie4483 …get the marrow OUT of the marrow bone. But when she finally sits down to eat, this is her reaction. What was significant about this day of struggle, followed by a moment of joy and triumph for Powell (whose day job involved assisting 9/11 victims and their families in an office directly across the street from Ground Zero)? This all happened on September 11, 2002. (edited) 5mo

Not book related, but I wanted to share. We are hosting early voting in the building where I work. Sitting in my office, I can occasionally hear the people in the room where the polls are located, and all week, I‘ve heard cheering coming from that room every few hours or so. I finally figured out why (cont‘d)

Maggie4483 Walking by that room this afternoon, I saw what looked like a family (mom, dad, and older teenager) at the table where IDs are checked and the ballot is handed out. As the teen was handed his ballot, the poll worker shouted, “WE‘VE GOT A FIRST TIME VOTER!!” And all the rest of the staff cheered and clapped. Then a few minutes later, when that same kid deposited his ballot, they cheered for him again. That kid‘s smile…🥹 5mo

Mehso-so

Finished this last week for my IRL book club. I think the consensus was that none of us really liked the out-of-left-field twist 3/4 of the way through. If there had been anything to even remotely hint at the direction it would take, it could have been great. It just felt a little lazy, like Sager wrote himself into a corner and had to pull out the modern-day thriller version of deus ex machina to get out of it.

Maggie4483 This was my first meeting with this book group. I‘m not sure how well I fit it, but I still had fun. An evening out really helped me feel like a real person for the first time in a while. 6mo
