An interesting series of short stories interconnected by a cat wandering Tokyo. It felt very Japanese despite being by an English writer, although I felt some of the explanations were unnecessary. The presence of the cat felt a little forced sometimes too.

Some of the stories are really sad, the way any story of a big city‘s population would be, but some are hopeful. It was a good mix and I enjoyed the collection a lot!

There‘s a bunch of books I could have picked for this that I loved (The English Patient, the Elegance of the Hedgehog, the Emperor Waltz, etc) but I wanted to highlight this short story collection I got during the Brooklyn Book Festival a few years ago.

Dark, quirky and interesting! This short story collection was great. I‘d recommend if you‘re looking for something a little different.

Just started this to take a break from the Night Circus, which I was finding a little slow for my mood at the moment.

I bought this from the kindle daily deals a while back mainly for the cover (so pretty 😍), the fact that it‘s set in Tokyo, and because I love “snap shots of life” stories.

Also I loved the idea of a cat connecting them all. 🐈

Hanging at my favourite local independent bookstore and picking up my copy of Our Wives Under the Sea for the august #CampLitsy read! The bookstore didn‘t originally stock it but they liked it when I ordered it so now they do!

I ended up skipping This Time Tomorrow, partly due to lack of reading time, partly because I wasn‘t as interested in it and I have something else on the go. Let me know if I should rethink that and read it fellow campers!

BarbaraBB I love that your bookstore listened to you and yes, I think you should read This Time Tomorrow. It‘s my favorite read of #CampLitsy so far! 1w

Reading on the train!

I was expecting to love this but it‘s been a bit slow going so far (I‘m 150 pages in). Does it speed up at all?

Soubhiville Her writing style is slow and descriptive. She‘s more about place and characters than plot. 3w
Kenyazero No, not a book (or author) to read if you want something fast-paced. This book is more about the slow enjoyment of the journey and poetic language. 3w
Kitta @Soubhiville @Kenyazero ah thanks good to know, I usually enjoy books like that so I guess that‘s why it was recommended to me. I‘m not sure why it‘s not grabbing me, maybe I‘m in the mood for something else and should come back to this! 3w

Apparently it‘s interwoven short stories of like in Tokyo “with styles ranging from manga to footnotes”. It sound lyrical and fascinating. I‘m hoping the manga displays properly on my kindle!

I possibly drank to much while reading this because I cried at the descriptions of grief and losing someone. The tenderness between the characters moved me in a way I haven‘t been in a while. Sure the premise is a little far fetched but who cares when reading romance?

Great story about life at a school for the Deaf! Glad it was a #CampLitsy pick! I really enjoyed the pages of explaining ASL and other aspects of Deaf culture. I knew a bit about it before but learning there‘s a Black ASL as a result of segregation in the schools was definitely eye opening.

I‘m behind on #camplitsy and am still reading true biz but walked down to the bookstore today to pick this gem up for our July read! It was in their romance section which I wasn‘t expecting.

The girl at the table next to me also bought it and I was tempted to ask her out (similar book taste has to be a good start!) but she was with friends and I was too awkward to do so lol. It would have been such a cute meeting story though!

I feel awkward posting about this but here goes:

Had a really rough week with no reading at all after my ex-wife got married. Our divorce was only finalized in March so this has come as a surprise and I‘m feeling hurt.

Also my cat was diagnosed with incurable cancer. 😿

Hopefully next week (or the week after) will be filled with better emotions, feeling back on track, and more reading.

But for now I‘m taking a brief break. #mentalhealth

Very interesting collection of short stories about a pandemic released from the arctic after climate change reveals the body of a 30,000 year old girl.

Death becomes commercialized and normalised as the pandemic takes it toll. The stories are dark but human and I felt a lot of empathy for the characters.

Would recommend if you like dystopian futures with slight sci-fi themes.

Read for #CampLitsy!

Wanted to give a shout out to this interesting nonfiction book on sale on kindle today!

It‘s a fascinating deep dive into feather collecting, fly fishing lures, and rare birds after very rare feathers are stolen from the British Museum of Natural History.

Sounds kinda weird and quirky, but I loved it! Would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a nonfiction crime story or thriller.

Did anyone else at #CampLitsy cry over the Stay, Fetch, Say I love you story? Because I did. 😭

This book is so hopeful and sad at the same time. It‘s short stories set in a pandemic in a sort of dystopian world where people have capitalized on death and the industry is booming as the pandemic ravages the world.

I‘m halfway through and loving the stories so far. Great choice for a discussion!

Soubhiville I had a harder time with Snortorious, that one made me cry. I wasn‘t quite there with the robot dogs. 2mo
Kitta @Soubhiville I read the first half in one sitting and I think I just held it in until the end. Snortorious was very sad too but also kind of comedic? 2mo

Mehso-so

Herland was written in 1915! It‘s feminist speculative fiction about a group of 3 men who discover a utopia of women who live completely free of men. They‘ve survived 2000 years this way and the men who discover them can‘t quite believe it. In fact, they can‘t quite believe women can do anything without men. Pretty forward thinking.

There were some parts of this novel I didn‘t like, and I felt it dragged a little.

Overall an interesting read.

Read through this #botm in a day!

A story of two women and how their lives eventually intertwine. Literary lesbian romance, with more focus on the literary than romance angle. This lives and the struggles they go through are detailed, making them seem more real.

Rating this 4/5, great quick queer read. Spoiler thoughts in comments.

Kitta Spoiler: I‘m sorry but no one goes from nothing to shooting heroin immediately! That part wasn‘t believable at all. I wish they made her overdose on something else. 3mo

What a great story about lesbians in the 1950s!

Well researched and well written, it‘s the story of Lily who is a Chinese American high school student and is dealing with her family‘s struggles living in Chinatown in San Francisco. It‘s sort of a coming of age and a coming out story, which normally I would be annoyed at (do we really need another?) but in this case, we do. It‘s good!

I can‘t wait to read what happens next.
