March? How? We really haven‘t had a proper prairie winter here yet. It seems so strange. I‘m a mood reader so every month when I think about my #bookspin list I think “what do I feel like.” This month‘s answer was “Rupaul, and I have absolutely no idea what else.” So here is my list. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheAromaofBooks Our winter has been unusually mild this year as well! The next two weeks are supposed to be in the 50s... has me a bit concerned about what March will look like!!! 3w

Bailedbailed

I really do hate to DNF when I‘m this close to the end but I can‘t. I think people know that people with intellectual disabilities where once referred to as something else and when authors use the “r-word” I usually bail right away. The author decided this needed to be explained. So I gave this a pass at the beginning, the author has now used this word at least six times and I can‘t let it go. If your job is words, choose a different word. ⤵️

Prairiegirl_reading On top of that these characters were SO immature! It made me angry. 5mo

I have never been so happy to have been influenced by a cute cover! This was so much fun! Narration by Will Wheaton was perfection! Just what I was looking for.

RamsFan1963 I have a small dilemma concerning this book. I can use my Audible credit and enjoy Wil Wheaton's narration, or wait a week and get it free from the library. I also want to read Mary Beard's new book about Roman Emperors. 6mo
Prairiegirl_reading @RamsFan1963 I don‘t have the greatest library system but if I did I would probably have waited. I‘m not disappointed that I used my audible credit. 6mo
RamsFan1963 @Prairiegirl_reading I saw the book at BAM today, but I'm not paying $28 dollars for a 272 page book 6mo

I really liked this with one small exception. There is some animal death that seemed long and drawn out and ended up making the end of the book feel emotionally manipulative to me. I wish the end had been different but I still really enjoyed the book overall. 4⭐️

Reggie Omg, I was wondering what the hell those last 20 pages had to do with a big gay wedding other than to absolutely gut me.I was sobbing out loud. What the heck, man? There was a lot of death comes for us all here. And I loved PawPaw. 8mo

If I‘m honest I have to say that I struggled with this book. It took me an entire month to finish. I couldn‘t stay focused on it and wasn‘t always compelled to pick it up when I had time to read. HOWEVER, part six (the last 27 pages) wrecked me. It is absolutely beautiful and made the pace of the rest make sense and totally worth while. I DNF a lot but I‘m glad I wouldn‘t let myself give up on this one. Thanks “Past Angie”.

So far, I‘ve had a pretty decent summer for reading but it has also been full of disappointments. This was definitely one of them. To me, this felt like an outline to a really great novel, not a great read. It‘s short, choppy, and I didn‘t like the third person point of view. There were some very poignant sentences, a few laughs, and some gut punches. I can‘t “pan” it but I didn‘t love it as I was expecting. #unpopularopinions

This book is far more sad than it is funny. I don‘t find mental illness “riotously funny”. Had this been marketed differently I may have enjoyed it more. It wasn‘t what I was looking for right now. I am still curious to see what Byron Lane writes next as this was well written.
#doublebookspin

Twainy I think he was Carrie Fischer‘s personal assistant for awhile & that weird dark humor is how she herself handled her illness. I bought this fictionalized book as a companion to Wishful Drinking which is a great audiobook but maybe not if you didn‘t like this book. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @Twainy I have read a couple of her books and enjoyed them. They were pretty much what I was expecting. This one wasn‘t. I was looking for something a bit lighter and I found this to be much more sad than advertised. I liked it to a point but I had to force myself to to pick it up. I found their relationship to be so unhealthy and sad. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I get frustrated sometimes when a book's blurb/cover indicates that it's fluffier than it actually is - I've read several books that weren't bad books and that I would actually have enjoyed if I had been in the mood for them - dealing with more difficult/serious subjects - instead of in the mood for the happy story indicated by the advertising! 2y

#bookspin One thing you have to know is that I hate it when my husband asks me what‘s for dinner. I almost drove off the road this morning as I listened:
“When he was young my father would, as all children do, ask the question, “Mom, what‘s for dinner?” His very sweet mother …. would respond with “Cazzi e patate” this translates directly as ⤵️

Prairiegirl_reading Dicks and potatoes. In other words leave me alone or bugger off as the Brits would say.” I‘m still laughing. Couldn‘t wait to get home to tell my husband who now swears he‘ll never ask me again!! 🤣🤣🤣 2y

I am currently culling my shelves. I‘ve already donated a ton. I‘m pretty proud of myself actually! I have had this one since it came out in 2010. It looks to me like a chunkster about people I imagine I‘ll have a hard time liking and I‘m guessing it‘s fairly bleak, none of which I‘m very interested and in right now.
Might future me like it? Or at least finish it?
You decide! Keep or donate?

vlwelser I learned a lot about birds and how bad humans are for the environment but hated this overall. Donate. 😂 2y
Ruthiella I thought it was pretty good. It‘s the only Franzen I‘ve read. All the main characters are pretty insufferable, however. 2y

RaeLovesToRead Keep!!!! Franzen does social commentary so so well. The characters aren't likeable but they are exquisitely well drawn. I would describe the tone as sardonic. 2y

Not loving this at around 20%. I‘m definitely considering bailing. I got it from a list of books that are like Eleanor Oliphant. The rec said quirky characters which this definitely has but I thought Eleanor was a loveable character and not finding that here.
I don‘t usually track my DNFs but I think I might this year. Do you track your bails? Do they count for your challenges?

IndoorDame I do track my bails on Litsy and Goodreads/StoryGraph, but the only challenge I count them towards is #bookspin and #bookspinbingo Do you have a link to the list you were talking about, or any recs from it? I loved Eleanor! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @IndoorDame I also loved Eleanor! 💜 2y

IndoorDame @Prairiegirl_reading thank you! I added some of these to my TBR! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @IndoorDame I had read and enjoyed a few other titles on this list too so I‘m pretty disappointed with Ellie and the harp maker. 😕 2y
IndoorDame @Prairiegirl_reading I‘ll definitely skip that one then. Too bad, the synopsis is promising. Though the litsy rating isn‘t. 2y
ravenlee I track my DNFs in my journal so I have a record of books/authors that didn‘t work, or if it‘s something I might come back to at another time. I give myself credit for the pages read if it‘s around 50+, and I count it for #bookspin or any other TBR-tackle-challenge, because it gets the book off my list. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @ravenlee I really need to start a journal. I always waiver on how to set it up and then I never do anything. I just track my finished books on goodreads and now StoryGraph also. I would really like a paper copy but I want it to be pretty! Lol!! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @IndoorDame I first heard about it on the currently reading podcast and then it came up on audible‘s daily deal so I grabbed because it does sound charming but 😬😬. I didn‘t check Litsy or anything until today when I was considering bailing. Should have checked before buying!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y

Over the last while I have been binging Rupaul‘s Drag Race. Basically, if it doesn‘t involve drag queens my brain can‘t handle it. 1. I have been in a book club with my mom for almost 20 years.
2. We choose books by suggesting books we want to read, not ones we have already read and recommend. I like this because then no one gets their feelings hurt by bringing something they love that others end up hating. One I really loved was Water for Elephants. Also Ragged Company.
3. The conversation is most often more interesting when we don‘t all love something IMO.

I loved this!! Richard Wagamese is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. This starts out with a very graphic bull riding accident and then a rape and I almost DNF‘d it. I decided to try again and then I got sucked in right away. I would recommend the print version as opposed to the audio though because it changes perspective without any heads up and was a little hard to follow at first.
