Over the last while I have been binging Rupaul‘s Drag Race. Basically, if it doesn‘t involve drag queens my brain can‘t handle it. So when this was an audible deal I thought “Graham Norton, the drag race judge?” (I know he does lots of other things but…) Low and behold, it‘s that Graham Norton. I had no idea he writes fiction! I was very impressed and I will read more. This is the first book in a very long time that I couldn‘t put down.

Libby1 I really liked A Keeper. Graham is a gem. 3w

1. I have been in a book club with my mom for almost 20 years.
2. We choose books by suggesting books we want to read, not ones we have already read and recommend. I like this because then no one gets their feelings hurt by bringing something they love that others end up hating. One I really loved was Water for Elephants. Also Ragged Company.
3. The conversation is most often more interesting when we don‘t all love something IMO.

ozma.of.oz My mom‘s in the same book club as me too! Also! Your answer for 2 is genius! Thank you for sharing! 3w

Tera66 Hang in there, I went through the worst slump the past few months. Maybe take a break from all things book for a week or two, that helped me. Absence made the heart grow fonder.🧡 1mo
Prairiegirl_reading @Tera66 thanks!! I was on track for my best reading year ever (in terms of numbers) and then my reading brain just shut down. Over the last two months I think I‘ve finished 4 or 5 books. I‘ve been watching rupaul‘s drag race instead of reading but I‘ve been thinking about what to read next to get out of this slump. I think I have to stop over thinking and just pick something up, so instead of over thinking the list I just picked randomly. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 1mo

I loved this!! Richard Wagamese is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. This starts out with a very graphic bull riding accident and then a rape and I almost DNF‘d it. I decided to try again and then I got sucked in right away. I would recommend the print version as opposed to the audio though because it changes perspective without any heads up and was a little hard to follow at first.

I‘m rating this a pick even though I didn‘t love it. I had very high expectations with this one because I really liked the Flatshare and I LOVED The Switch. Addie and Dylan are no Eileen. I don‘t like to judge based on what a book ISN‘T and what this is is a light, mostly fun summer read. It‘s better than a so-so but not a rave.

marleed I was anticipating a 5-star read too. She has set a high bar for herself! 6mo

1. I LOVED the tagged book. I had never heard of it before someone in my irl book club suggested it. It‘s definitely a favourite of this year and also on my all-time favourites.
2. We‘ve had many great discussions. I think Water for Elephants was a good one. A book none of really liked but the discussion was great was Fishbowl. I would recommend The 57 Bus because it has so many interesting aspects for discussion.

I listen to the get booked podcast weekly so when Amanda went on about The Switch I thought it sounded like something that I wouldn‘t normally read but my pandemic brain said YES! And I loved that one. When she recommended this as a read alike I thought PERFECT! I guess September pandemic brain and April pandemic brain are different because I hated this one. I have nothing good to say about it.

Ruthiella Why do you think that the podcast recommended it as a read alike? 🤔 7mo

I‘m giving this a pick but I didn‘t love it. It is problematic AF but it also has great character development and strong sense of place. And then it‘s insanely long which it didn‘t need to be IMO. I laughed in a lot of places but I hated the ending!!! However I‘m sure it will be one of those books I‘ll remember for a long time. Struggling to put a star rating on this one.

marleed Oh gosh that happens to me - when I‘m so proud of finishing a classic chunkster that I didn‘t love but really wanted to read. 8mo
Prairiegirl_reading @marleed yeah exactly! I‘m pretty sure it‘s the longest book I‘ve ever read and I am glad I read it so that makes it head and shoulders above the last chunkster I read (the goldfinch). And also it‘s only April and I can check off my chunkster goal for the year! 8mo

1. This weekend involves reading plans but it‘s not Thanksgiving! (as you Canadians know) My pre-45/pre-pandemic plans would have been Black Friday shopping but this year is staying home due to tight Covid restrictions as I live in a province where people refuse to follow the rules and the numbers are the worst in Canada 🙄😤

Well if this isn‘t 2020 I don‘t know what is. September was nothing but five stars reads for me. Followed by October and what is potentially my most hated book of all time!!! I finished it and I‘m glad! I have nothing good to say about this one. I‘m especially irritated with the casual use of the “r-word” not once but twice! If you are an author and words are your business pick a better word! 😡

MsMelissa Interesting. I tried to read this one last year. I think I got to page 100 before stopping. I was bored. I‘ve always intended to try again. Have you read The Secret History? That seems to be a much loved book but I hated that one. 14mo

Prairiegirl_reading @Book_Fiend_Melissa what we usually do is we all suggest books we haven‘t read so that no one can hold anything against anyone if they don‘t like it or no one is offended if they thought eat pray love was life changing and someone else thinks it‘s garbage. They Called Us Enemy | George Takei, Justin Eisinger, Steven Scott

Pickpick

September wrap up. I got into a bad slump where I couldn‘t get into anything I tried! I managed to finish five books but the odd thing about September is that all five were five star reads for me! I don‘t think that has ever happened! Pride and Prejudice was so much fun-thank you @sprainedbrain and all #pemberlittens!

Also, if you haven‘t checked out They Called Us Enemy you might want to check it out. It‘s outstanding!

LiteraryinLawrence Between the 2 O‘Leary books, which would you recommend more? I have been thinking about trying one. Thanks! 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @LiteraryinLititz I loved the switch because I loved the older character (Eileen) and it made me laugh out loud in public. Flat share is cute and sweet. I like the switch more but both are good rom-coms that hit the spot for me. 😄 1y

Is anyone else trying out Storygraph for tracking? For now I‘m trying it along with goodreads but I don‘t really use that for anything but tracking. I‘d like to stop using it eventually. This is very different and I‘m still figuring it out but this part is cool. They track your reading by mood. Also the recommendations are interesting and more personalized than goodreads. Also you can export all your GR data if you want.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Interesting...I wonder how they decide what is what, what‘s easy for one reader might be challenging for another. I might have to check it out. 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m not sure but I think you have questions to answer when you finish something. I just started it over the weekend and definitely don‘t have it figured out yet. 1y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Prairiegirl_reading Definitely sounds interesting. 1y

JoyBlue I've been trying it out. I haven't really taken a deep dive (I'm pretty much just logging my books at this point). UPDATE: I went in search of my mood pie chart and found other fun stuff there, too. Thanks for the encouragement. 😏 (edited) 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @JoyBlue I really like that pie chart info! Very interesting. I haven‘t figured it all out yet that‘s for sure. 1y
daisyheadmaesie I made a StoryGraph account, but haven‘t used it much. I like the idea of sticking to what you have on your shelves, though! 13mo
Prairiegirl_reading @daisyheadmaesie I have to admit I haven‘t figured it out completely yet. And sometimes forget to use it! But I do love all the stats. 13mo
daisyheadmaesie @Prairiegirl_reading Another website that gives you interesting stats on your reading is BookSirens. If you‘re ever looking for eBook ARCs, that is a great place to be! 13mo
Prairiegirl_reading @daisyheadmaesie thanks for letting me know. I‘ve never heard of it. 13mo
daisyheadmaesie @Prairiegirl_reading You‘re welcome :) 13mo

I picked this after Amanda Nelson from the Get Booked podcast raved about it. I loved it! It is adorable and Eileen is such a great character! I laughed out loud in public! 🤣🤣🤣

ChasingOm I'm going to read this one today!
1y
Andrew65 I loved this too. 1y

Ok 7% in and I‘m bawling. No one warned me and I can‘t!! 😭😭😭

katy4peas Oh gosh! That means I will too! 😭 thanks for the warning! 😉❤️❤️ 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @katy4peas I honestly don‘t even know how it turns out because I just went running to shut it off because I didn‘t want to hear what happens. I am still upset. 1y
katy4peas Oh, I‘m sorry! 😮 sending you hugs! Find a happy book! 📚 1y

Prairiegirl_reading @katy4peas thanks! I started The Switch and went for a walk and I laughed out loud while walking down the street! That helped even if people think I‘m nuts! 1y
katy4peas 😁🥳🥳 1y
GinaKButler Oh no...the opening scene is brutal. But, this was one of my favorite books last year. 😬 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @GinaKButler I may go back since it‘s a book club book but I‘m not even sure I can! 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @GinaKButler which I suppose is a credit to the author. 1y
GinaKButler @Prairiegirl_reading Your post is so timely...I recently recommended this to someone who likes historical fiction but needed a break from WWII. She stopped me and said I should have warned her...😬 I totally forgot how hard the beginning of that book was. 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @GinaKButler I work with people with disabilities and just the term human reject was a gut punch and then it gets so much worse. I was bawling and I‘m getting teary eyed right now. But my mom just read it and said she liked it, no warning about the beginning. 😭 obviously there is a lot more to the story. 1y
GinaKButler @Prairiegirl_reading It‘s an excellent book, but definitely take care of your heart! 😘 1y

I‘ve only read three of them. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

MicheleinPhilly I absolutely REFUSE to tally how many books I‘ve bought since quarantine started. 😬 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @MicheleinPhilly lol! I normally don‘t count my tbr but it occurred to me today I may have gone a bit overboard!!! Too much good stuff though, always finding more I want. 1y

Check out this beautiful book!!! Gorgeous cover and the wood grain edge! 😻 I love it when publishers put in that little extra effort!

MsMelissa I have the hardback and it has the same edges. It‘s so pretty ☺️ 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @Book_Fiend_Melissa I just heard about this book recently and the paperback just came out so I ordered that instead. I can‘t wait to read it but I‘ve been ordering so much lately I don‘t know when I‘ll get to it! 1y
MsMelissa Oh, I know the feeling. I ordered a pile of books last week, more today, and then found out Indigo topped up my Plum Points to $100. You know what that means? That‘s right, more books 😂 I have hundreds of books around here unread, but nobody can‘t stop me from buying more (although my husband would like me to 🙄) 1y

Prairiegirl_reading @Hooked_on_books right??!! People ask what I want to keep happening once covid restrictions are over and I‘m like six feet is perfectly fine! Also curbside pickup is also awesome because then I don‘t have to see people. 🤣 1y

LitStephanie Hahaha! Glad some are not suffering under the restrictions. 1y
katy4peas Haha. I‘m enjoying working curbside so I don‘t have to talk to customers. Much less stressful of a work day! 🤷🏼‍♀️ @Hooked_on_books @Prairiegirl_reading (edited) 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @katy4peas no one yells at you because they don‘t want to wear a mask. Win-win!! Curbside needs to stay!! 1y

Stargirl being 1 and The Most Dangerous Place on Earth being 20. I chose books set in schools, libraries or bookshops and I had so many that I had a hard time narrowing it down to 20. My tbr is completely out of control. 🤦🏻‍♀️

TheAromaofBooks haha I know the feeling!! Books everywhere!! 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @TheAromaofBooks I need more bookcases and I just keep ordering more! 1y
TheAromaofBooks We're getting ready to do some remodeling and were sketching out what was going to go on our new wall & my husband said something along the lines of, “I'll probably go ahead and build a bookshelf since we'll probably have books that need to go there by then“ 😂 At least he's accepted his fate! 1y

If you like a book that is big on plot just keep moving, nothing to see here. The main character, Micah, was somewhere in between Don Tillman from the Rosie Project and Ove. A man stuck in his routines but not quite as curmudgeonly as Ove. This was my first Tyler and won‘t be my last. 4 ⭐️

Crazeedi I have this one on my kindle! 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @Crazeedi it‘s super short! Maybe even too short. I enjoyed it though. 1y

The Dream Daughter | Diane Chamberlain

Pickpick

I had no idea what this book was about, went in totally blind. Also had never heard of Diane Chamberlain. I pretty much finished this in one sitting which hasn‘t happened to me for years. You really have to suspend belief but that‘s ok, this one is a super quick read while still having emotion. Perfect for summer. This picture is my dog (Sadie) in the trailer we bought yesterday. I thought I‘d share since it‘s #nationaldogday #doublebookspin

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Congratulations! Obviously Sadie approves! 1y
