#bookspin One thing you have to know is that I hate it when my husband asks me what‘s for dinner. I almost drove off the road this morning as I listened:
“When he was young my father would, as all children do, ask the question, “Mom, what‘s for dinner?” His very sweet mother …. would respond with “Cazzi e patate” this translates directly as ⤵️

Prairiegirl_reading Dicks and potatoes. In other words leave me alone or bugger off as the Brits would say.” I‘m still laughing. Couldn‘t wait to get home to tell my husband who now swears he‘ll never ask me again!! 🤣🤣🤣 3w
Prairiegirl_reading I‘m quite glad #bookspin pushed this to the top of my list. Thanks again @TheAromaofBooks for hosting. 3w
SRWCF ??? I speak Italian and "patate" is also the word they use to refer to the vagina! 3w
See All 11 Comments
Prairiegirl_reading @SRWCF oh my god! Now I‘m laughing even harder!!!! 3w
SRWCF That is definitely a funny phrase and I plan on using it the next time my Italian (born and raised) husband asks what's for dinner! 3w
SRWCF @Prairiegirl_reading right?!? La patata is what they use for little girls and il pisello (pea) for little boys! Cazzi is pretty vulgar, tho! 😅 3w
Prairiegirl_reading @SRWCF I guess that‘s why I think it‘s so funny! 3w
SRWCF @Prairiegirl_reading It's a great response, that's for sure! 3w
TheAromaofBooks Oh my gosh, sounds like that one needs to go on one of those inspiration kitchen signs 😂 3w
Prairiegirl_reading @TheAromaofBooks I was telling my friend that last night!! Lol!! Cazzi e patate it‘s what‘s for dinner 🤣 3w

May #bookspin #doublebookspin
The weather has been so bad here in Manitoba. We are currently experiencing our third Colorado Low in three weeks, in a year where already more snow than normal. At least it‘s not more snow this weekend. We really do not need any more moisture but it‘s coming anyway. 😬😞
I‘m really hoping May brings outdoor reading weather! ☀️🌱🌷💐

TheLudicReader I feel for you; it has felt like February here in NB. Will you be impacted by the flooding? 😬 3w
TheAromaofBooks Hopefully the weather shapes up soon!! We also had a chilly, damp April! 3w
Prairiegirl_reading @TheLudicReader I live in a small town right by the Red River so our ring dike is being closed off but we can still drive in and out so we are just a little inconvenienced. The people who live outside the dike have it worse, some have been evacuated already. I hope it warms up for you soon too!! 3w
Prairiegirl_reading @TheAromaofBooks it is supposed to start warming up next week! 🤞🏻🤞🏻I hope it warms up for you as well. 🌸 3w

Freedom: A Novel | Jonathan Franzen
post image

I am currently culling my shelves. I‘ve already donated a ton. I‘m pretty proud of myself actually! I have had this one since it came out in 2010. It looks to me like a chunkster about people I imagine I‘ll have a hard time liking and I‘m guessing it‘s fairly bleak, none of which I‘m very interested and in right now.
Might future me like it? Or at least finish it?
You decide! Keep or donate?

EvieBee I donated my unread copy, too. 2mo
vlwelser I learned a lot about birds and how bad humans are for the environment but hated this overall. Donate. 😂 2mo
Ruthiella I thought it was pretty good. It‘s the only Franzen I‘ve read. All the main characters are pretty insufferable, however. 2mo
See All 6 Comments
RaeLovesToRead Keep!!!! Franzen does social commentary so so well. The characters aren't likeable but they are exquisitely well drawn. I would describe the tone as sardonic. 2mo
RaeLovesToRead Although if you're after an uplifting read, I agree, this isn't it. 2mo
Chelsea.Poole Loved this book. Made me a Franzen fan. But I listened to the audiobook which was excellent. 2mo

Not loving this at around 20%. I‘m definitely considering bailing. I got it from a list of books that are like Eleanor Oliphant. The rec said quirky characters which this definitely has but I thought Eleanor was a loveable character and not finding that here.
I don‘t usually track my DNFs but I think I might this year. Do you track your bails? Do they count for your challenges?

IndoorDame I do track my bails on Litsy and Goodreads/StoryGraph, but the only challenge I count them towards is #bookspin and #bookspinbingo Do you have a link to the list you were talking about, or any recs from it? I loved Eleanor! 4mo
Prairiegirl_reading @IndoorDame I also loved Eleanor! 💜 4mo
See All 9 Comments
IndoorDame @Prairiegirl_reading thank you! I added some of these to my TBR! 4mo
Prairiegirl_reading @IndoorDame I had read and enjoyed a few other titles on this list too so I‘m pretty disappointed with Ellie and the harp maker. 😕 4mo
IndoorDame @Prairiegirl_reading I‘ll definitely skip that one then. Too bad, the synopsis is promising. Though the litsy rating isn‘t. 4mo
ravenlee I track my DNFs in my journal so I have a record of books/authors that didn‘t work, or if it‘s something I might come back to at another time. I give myself credit for the pages read if it‘s around 50+, and I count it for #bookspin or any other TBR-tackle-challenge, because it gets the book off my list. 4mo
Prairiegirl_reading @ravenlee I really need to start a journal. I always waiver on how to set it up and then I never do anything. I just track my finished books on goodreads and now StoryGraph also. I would really like a paper copy but I want it to be pretty! Lol!! 4mo
Prairiegirl_reading @IndoorDame I first heard about it on the currently reading podcast and then it came up on audible‘s daily deal so I grabbed because it does sound charming but 😬😬. I didn‘t check Litsy or anything until today when I was considering bailing. Should have checked before buying!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4mo

Over the last while I have been binging Rupaul‘s Drag Race. Basically, if it doesn‘t involve drag queens my brain can‘t handle it. So when this was an audible deal I thought “Graham Norton, the drag race judge?” (I know he does lots of other things but…) Low and behold, it‘s that Graham Norton. I had no idea he writes fiction! I was very impressed and I will read more. This is the first book in a very long time that I couldn‘t put down.

1. I have been in a book club with my mom for almost 20 years.
2. We choose books by suggesting books we want to read, not ones we have already read and recommend. I like this because then no one gets their feelings hurt by bringing something they love that others end up hating. One I really loved was Water for Elephants. Also Ragged Company.
3. The conversation is most often more interesting when we don‘t all love something IMO.

ozma.of.oz My mom‘s in the same book club as me too! Also! Your answer for 2 is genius! Thank you for sharing! 6mo

tokorowilliamwallace A few years ago, one of the Catholic young adult professionals parish-specific groups I was in was kind of like a book club, and then when I moved to Baltimore, I scattered myself around a bunch of groups again and so had a couple or a few more Catholic groups reading a succession of books a followed along with the South Baltimore book club which had four separate meeting groups which met at different times for wider participation. Prairiegirl_reading @Tera66 thanks!! I was on track for my best reading year ever (in terms of numbers) and then my reading brain just shut down. Over the last two months I think I‘ve finished 4 or 5 books. I‘ve been watching rupaul‘s drag race instead of reading but I‘ve been thinking about what to read next to get out of this slump. I think I have to stop over thinking and just pick something up, so instead of over thinking the list I just picked randomly. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 7mo

I loved this!! Richard Wagamese is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. This starts out with a very graphic bull riding accident and then a rape and I almost DNF‘d it. I decided to try again and then I got sucked in right away. I would recommend the print version as opposed to the audio though because it changes perspective without any heads up and was a little hard to follow at first.

I‘m rating this a pick even though I didn‘t love it. I had very high expectations with this one because I really liked the Flatshare and I LOVED The Switch. Addie and Dylan are no Eileen. I don‘t like to judge based on what a book ISN‘T and what this is is a light, mostly fun summer read. It‘s better than a so-so but not a rave.

I‘m giving this a pick but I didn‘t love it. It is problematic AF but it also has great character development and strong sense of place. And then it‘s insanely long which it didn‘t need to be IMO. I laughed in a lot of places but I hated the ending!!! However I‘m sure it will be one of those books I‘ll remember for a long time. Struggling to put a star rating on this one.

Prairiegirl_reading @marleed yeah exactly! I‘m pretty sure it‘s the longest book I‘ve ever read and I am glad I read it so that makes it head and shoulders above the last chunkster I read (the goldfinch). And also it‘s only April and I can check off my chunkster goal for the year! 13mo

1. This weekend involves reading plans but it‘s not Thanksgiving! (as you Canadians know) My pre-45/pre-pandemic plans would have been Black Friday shopping but this year is staying home due to tight Covid restrictions as I live in a province where people refuse to follow the rules and the numbers are the worst in Canada 🙄😤
2. Usually somewhere around the 23rd but maybe not at all in 2020 ⬇️

Prairiegirl_reading I get seasonal depression so decorating for Christmas gets put on the back burner most years. This year I am particularly struggling. Debating putting it up early to try to perk myself up or just forget it because Christmas isn‘t going to happen here anyway. 1y

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! That's why I love monthly challenges... always a new opportunity for success!! 2y
MsMelissa Ive read 4 and 10 and they are both excellent. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @Book_Fiend_Melissa I hope I can focus on nonfiction! Very curious about red river girl since I live just outside Winnipeg. 2y

This one is just fun! Mariah reads it herself and sings a fair bit so if you are a fan definitely get the audio. Her writing style is overly dramatic but really I think that fits her perfectly. Perfect recovery book for me after the goldfinch.

Well if this isn‘t 2020 I don‘t know what is. September was nothing but five stars reads for me. Followed by October and what is potentially my most hated book of all time!!! I finished it and I‘m glad! I have nothing good to say about this one. I‘m especially irritated with the casual use of the “r-word” not once but twice! If you are an author and words are your business pick a better word! 😡

MsMelissa Interesting. I tried to read this one last year. I think I got to page 100 before stopping. I was bored. I‘ve always intended to try again. Have you read The Secret History? That seems to be a much loved book but I hated that one. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @Book_Fiend_Melissa I have had the secret history on my tbr for years but I haven‘t read it. Not so sure I want to now. If you were bored at page 100 it moves along a little quicker later on but it‘s no more interesting. 😕 2y
janeycanuck @Book_Fiend_Melissa @Prairiegirl_reading Don‘t write the Secret History off just yet! I did like the Goldfinch but understand why it could turn people off. The Secret History is very different and much less polarizing. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @janeycanuck well that‘s good to hear! 😄 2y

Angie‘s book club tip #1 don‘t ever suggest a book that is sooooo long! People won‘t appreciate you for it.

MsMelissa I selected Wolf Hall for my book club back when it was first released. I‘m not in the book club anymore 😂 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @Book_Fiend_Melissa oh dear! I have to say this made me laugh. 🤣 I tried to talk them out of such a long book but they wouldn‘t listen and now I‘m hate reading! Lol! I‘ll forgive the person who suggested it someday! 2y
MsMelissa The book club still exists and I‘m really good friends with one of the members. I try to give her book recs all the time but she says she doesn‘t trust me after Wolf Hall (which I adored, but she hated). Good luck with The Goldfinch. I started it last year but haven‘t picked it up since. 2y

Prairiegirl_reading @Book_Fiend_Melissa what we usually do is we all suggest books we haven‘t read so that no one can hold anything against anyone if they don‘t like it or no one is offended if they thought eat pray love was life changing and someone else thinks it‘s garbage. (We did read eat pray love and all agreed it was garbage haha) This time I know the person had read it because she said so but no one objected except me. So now I‘m on a mission to finish. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @Book_Fiend_Melissa just so I can complain with more gusto! Lol ! 2y
lynneamch I read it on Kindle before I knew how to figure out what page I was on. I was in it so deep I never even thought about how long it might be. LOL. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @lynneamch the first chapter was torture though. I thought it would never end! Lol! I‘m 60% done. I‘m determined to hold on but I‘m not sure I can! I‘be been hate reading but now I‘m filling with rage. 2y
lynneamch If you give up, watch the movie. 😉 2y

Prairiegirl_reading @Kdgordon88 oh yeah! I had forgotten about that! 2y
janeycanuck Some of us are doing Pride Prejudice and other Flavors at the end of the month as a buddy read. @4thhouseontheleft has a post about it. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @janeycanuck thank you!! I‘m having such a hard time settling on anything! I‘m not even keeping up with Anne of green gables chapter a day. 😩 2y

I originally planned spooky reads for #bookspin but I wasn‘t really feeling it so this one is a mix of fall, spooky, witchy, and one about Thanksgiving since we do that in October in Canada.

MsMelissa I seriously can‘t believe Thanksgiving is only a little over a week away! 2y

September wrap up. I got into a bad slump where I couldn‘t get into anything I tried! I managed to finish five books but the odd thing about September is that all five were five star reads for me! I don‘t think that has ever happened! Pride and Prejudice was so much fun-thank you @sprainedbrain and all #pemberlittens!

Also, if you haven‘t checked out They Called Us Enemy you might want to check it out. It‘s outstanding!

LiteraryinLawrence Between the 2 O‘Leary books, which would you recommend more? I have been thinking about trying one. Thanks! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @LiteraryinLititz I loved the switch because I loved the older character (Eileen) and it made me laugh out loud in public. Flat share is cute and sweet. I like the switch more but both are good rom-coms that hit the spot for me. 😄 2y

Is anyone else trying out Storygraph for tracking? For now I‘m trying it along with goodreads but I don‘t really use that for anything but tracking. I‘d like to stop using it eventually. This is very different and I‘m still figuring it out but this part is cool. They track your reading by mood. Also the recommendations are interesting and more personalized than goodreads. Also you can export all your GR data if you want.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Interesting...I wonder how they decide what is what, what‘s easy for one reader might be challenging for another. I might have to check it out. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m not sure but I think you have questions to answer when you finish something. I just started it over the weekend and definitely don‘t have it figured out yet. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Prairiegirl_reading Definitely sounds interesting. 2y

JoyBlue I've been trying it out. I haven't really taken a deep dive (I'm pretty much just logging my books at this point). UPDATE: I went in search of my mood pie chart and found other fun stuff there, too. Thanks for the encouragement. 😏 (edited) 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @JoyBlue I really like that pie chart info! Very interesting. I haven‘t figured it all out yet that‘s for sure. 2y
daisyheadmaesie I made a StoryGraph account, but haven‘t used it much. I like the idea of sticking to what you have on your shelves, though! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @daisyheadmaesie I have to admit I haven‘t figured it out completely yet. And sometimes forget to use it! But I do love all the stats. 2y
daisyheadmaesie @Prairiegirl_reading Another website that gives you interesting stats on your reading is BookSirens. If you‘re ever looking for eBook ARCs, that is a great place to be! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @daisyheadmaesie thanks for letting me know. I‘ve never heard of it. 2y
