A quiet coming of age story that kept feeling like it was going to be incredibly special but never quite got there for me.

squirrelbrain Yes, it just kind of faded out. Although I suppose it‘s meant to be the first of four, so maybe that‘s why. 14h

#BookerLonglist
I regret listening to the audio instead of reading the print because I think I‘d have enjoyed the read. Instead, my mind wandered with the scenes — past vs present? Who‘s speaking? That said, I did love the set up and setting. I came away disappointed though, as I just wasn‘t able to connect with the characters in this format.

BarbaraBB You‘re on a roll with the Booker longlist! I hope one of them will be really great! 1d
squirrelbrain I struggled with the audio too -I felt it would have been better in print. 1d

BarbaraBB I‘ll temper my expectations! 2d
charl08 Yeah, I wasn't overwhelmed either. I've only read 2 so far, hoping for better in the list. 2d
ChaoticMissAdventures I keep hearing people say the beginning is good but the end feels too expanded to go into a series, did you find this? I am sad it was one of my most looked forward to on the list 2d

TheKidUpstairs @ChaoticMissAdventures I loved this one. And I felt it told the story of this one important time in his life, but left it open as to what the future may hold for him. For me, it reads well on its own but also leaves room for the other books to show other times in his life (if that is how they go, I don't know what Aw plans for the rest). 2d
Leniverse This one is up next on audio for me. A few hours left in my current audiobook first. This one seems short, which I am really in the mood for now, so that's good 😅 1d
Graywacke I‘m reading it now. Early on. Still trying to find some traction between book and brain. 1d

#WeeklyForecast

Continue with my yearlong reads on the right

Continue Tombland #ShardlakeBR

Continue No Straight Road Takes You There, maybe even finish

Continue The South on audio

Finish Look at Us Dance and hopefully read Tell Me Everything

charl08 How is the audio narrator for The South? I wondered how the different voices worked. 5d
AnneCecilie @charl08 It‘s the same person that‘s narrates everything. I haven‘t really noticed any differences in the voices, but I‘m a slow audio listener so I may not have gotten to the different voices yet 5d
TheBookHippie How is year of wonder ? I‘ve looked at that before. 5d

I had my fist day back at work today after 3 weeks of vacation. And as I always says: “I‘m born for vacation”

The stack on the right includes my yearlong reads and buddy reads that I was finishing. For Tombland I kept up the pace

The stack on the left is was I read. When it comes to Kristin Lavransdatter, I read the 2nd book about a 1/3 of the book. I‘m still reading Ocean

I also finished The Flower Farm on audio and started The South

#bookerlonglist #10

I did really like this but struggled with the audio at the start. Definitely a case of me though, not the book. Listening on my commute and having lots of work-related stress meant I was very distracted and kept losing the thread. Although I don‘t think the constant changing of POV and from first to third person helped.

The ending was very sudden, but to be expected when it‘s the first in a series of four. I will read more.

ChaoticMissAdventures This is one of my most anticipated on the list! Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Graywacke Yay! Ten down. I have it in hardcover, so I‘ll avoid audio 2w

Like @squirrelbrain 's post from The Times said: Yes Please. This was fabulous.

One hot Malaysian summer, Jay's family leaves KL for the countryside and the run down, struggling family farm. As he works super by side with the farm manager's son, Jay experiences the longings and intoxication of first love. Flashbacks to the past test and expose family secrets and connections, and Jay and his sisters face coming of age in a struggling economy.

TheKidUpstairs The economy of Aw's prose presents it all as a quiet story that speaks volumes of the lives of these complex characters at a time of change. The characters and atmosphere are deeply engaging. This is the first of a planned quartet, and I can't wait to read more. Highly recommend! 3w
JamieArc Thanks for the tag! I was on the fence about this one but I‘ll put it on my “yes, read” list. 3w

kenw3 I should be getting to this one this week at some point. 3w
TheKidUpstairs Oops, sorry, don't know why the tags double sent! 3w
BarbaraBB Fab review, looking forward to it. 3w
Graywacke Sounds terrific! 3w
squirrelbrain Hooray - looking forward to this one! (On audio, after I‘ve finished listening to Flesh) 3w
Leniverse Does it end in a way that's ok for now? That's always a concern for me with a series. I like each book to feel at least somewhat self contained, even if part of a greater narrative. 3w
TheKidUpstairs @Leniverse yes, the immediate story of this period of time feels complete. It's left in a somewhat open way, but not any sort of cliffhanger. Could easily be read as a single novel, just one with an open ended future for its characters. (I hope that makes sense) 3w
TheKidUpstairs @JamieArc I wasn't overly keen on it, but started with it because it was available and due back first. It's great when a book surprises you like that, eh? I hope you like it, too, when you get to it! 3w
JamieArc @TheKidUpstairs That‘s why I can‘t stay away from the Booker Longlist even though I say I‘m going to skip it every year! There are always a few gems. 3w
Leniverse Thanks, yes that makes sense! Starting to look forward to this one now. I have an audio hold but it will take a couple of weeks. 3w
Chelsea.Poole I have listened to about 15% so far and I like it but I do wish I had the physical copy to read instead. It seems introspective and I‘m worried I‘m missing some nuance. 3w

"In those moments, with the sun burning above us, we felt as though we could play that game all day, every day for the remainder of our youth. There were no rules, no winners or losers, no objective, and every match ended in laughter that we couldn't explain."

The South, by Tash Aw (2025)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Premise: Two young men from very different backgrounds form a connection during one dry Malaysian summer.

Review: This is a fascinating window book, exploring not only queerness in a SE Asian context, but also how urban-rural, racial, and class divides play out in Malaysia. Overall this worked very well, but I was left wanting a bit more from it.

JamieArc Are you reading from the Booker Prize longlist? 3w
Mattsbookaday @JamieArc I am reading as many as I can get my hands on, but not exclusively :) 3w
JamieArc @Mattsbookaday Great! I‘ll be reading a few and like to see other people‘s thoughts on them so I‘ll be watching for them. 3w
