Really enjoyed this modern version of Northanger Abbey. I thought the setting of the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh was a great update to stand in for Bath (and it happily reminded my of my own time spent in the city during festival season 🤩). The Thorpes were just as terrible and the two junior Tilneys as lovely as the originals.
#Pemberlittens

inthegreensandblues The one thing I didn't understand was the General's surprising reason for turning on Cat. Updating the form of his discrimination doesn't explain why was he so keen on setting her up with his son in the first place, if not for money? 🤔🤷 3y

#PemberLittens! December has gotten away from me, but it‘s time to think about our January Northanger Abbey-related reading!

I plan to read from all of the above except the tagged McDermid book (I‘ve read it, was underwhelmed 😳). If interested in buddy reads, let me know!

I‘ll be listening to Nachtsturm Castle, and, for Audible members, check out the free superstar cast dramatization of NA.🥰

I‘m sure I‘ve missed some... what are YOU planning?

Charityann Oh, this looks fun! Northanger Abbey is my favorite Austen novel!!😄 3y
See All 28 Comments
sprainedbrain @Charityann you should join us! Have you read any of the adaptions/retellings? 3y
TheAromaofBooks It's weird, I've seen almost entirely “meh“ reviews both here & elsewhere for the Austen Project titles. 3y
melissajayne I‘m doing the Val McDermind book simply b/c I can‘t find anything else through my library at the moment. 3y
TheBookHippie Henry Tilney's Diary (A Jane Austen Heroes Novel) 3y
sprainedbrain @TheAromaofBooks it was such a great idea and such a disappointing result. 😬 3y
Deblovestoread Henry Tilney‘s Diary is on my list. The Audible version of NA is great. 3y
sprainedbrain @Kdgordon88 did you listen to the dramatized one with Emma Thompson et al? I‘m pretty excited about that awesome cast! 3y
Deblovestoread Yes, I listened to it early last year before #Pemberlittens was a thing. It was my first reading of the novel and loved it! 3y
OriginalCyn620 I don‘t have any of these but will see if I can locate any through my library or Libby! 3y
Bookwormjillk I might do the audible one. @TheAromaofBooks yes the Austen Project didn‘t work out too well 3y
IndoorDame I think I‘ll probably do the audible one. I don‘t see the others available at my library 3y
kspenmoll Audile or Shannon Winslow to check into. 3y
inthegreensandblues That dramatization is tempting! 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig Audible Dramatization is wonderful. Tagged book was dreadful. I need to look at whats in my Kindle tbr. 3y
rockpools Jenni, please could I be untagged? I‘m just not keeping up, so I‘m going to stop pretending. It‘s such a fun challenge though - thanks for all the work you‘ve put in 😘 3y
jenniferw88 Weird, I ❤ the Val McDermid adaptation - but it may be partly due to it starting in Dorset (where I live) & I thought the reason for the General sending Cat home was a good modernisation. Mind you I like Val as a writer anyway! 3y
Andrea313 I'll be reading the Val McDermid, along with two YA adaptations. Might also throw in an Austen bio if I get ambitious! But we'll see where the month takes me! 3y
batsy Val McDermid's one might be the only one I do because I think I'll be able to access a copy and I've been curious about it :) 3y
Clare-Dragonfly Well, apparently neither of my libraries has ANY of these as an ebook—so I guess I‘ll be skipping the retelling portion! 3y
sprainedbrain @rockpools absolutely... done! 3y
DebinHawaii @jenniferw88 I liked it too. I thought it was fun but I did it as a chapter-by-chapter buddy read a couple years ago, so maybe it influenced me. (And I really liked Eligible from The Austen Project.)🤷🏻‍♀️ @sprainedbrain I just got Searching for Mr. Tilney & The Bride of Northanger Abbey for $2.99 each on Kindle & can read Nachtsturm Castle for free through Kindle Unlimited so I‘d be up for any of those.🤗 3y

I‘m reading the Jane Austen box set. It‘s softcover. The text size is good. Anyone else? What is your favorite edition?
@Cuilin @batsy #pemberlittens

Amazon Link below:

Jane Austen Boxed Set (Word Cloud Classics) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1645170004/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_thqUFbTCNC9HZ

Scochrane26 That set is really pretty. I have Austen on kindle, but I have bought a couple of hardback ones. 3y
Cuilin Those are pretty @Moonprismpower, like @batsy I have some Chiltern editions for eye candy. I usually read a cheaper edition. Penguin classics are nice and the print is readable. 3y
Moonprismpower @Cuilin @batsy @Scochrane26 I‘ve never heard of the Chiltern editions. I do like the Penguins classic hardcover editions also. I tend to enjoy cracking spines so I usually read the copy I have. I like worn books. Yay or nay on worn books and cracked spines? 😂 3y

batsy That set is gorgeous. Like @Cuilin I have a bunch of affordable paperbacks, mostly Penguin and Vintage, and the print is readable and I've had them for years so have grown very fond of them, like old friends :) 3y
Moonprismpower @batsy @Scochrane26 @Cuilin I‘m very lucky since occasionally we get really pretty editions donated to my library books sale. I scoop them@up and pay the steep price of $1 !!! Where do you guys find most of your books? Also I‘ve looked up Chiltern editions. Very nice. 3y
Cuilin @Moonprismpower yes I like some books to be pristine for display then others are more like text books with cracked spines, underlines and notes. 3y
Moonprismpower @Cuilin do you have a bookstagram? I‘d follow you to see your pics. 3y
Cuilin @Moonprismpower I only book post on Litsy and Goodreads. I‘ve no Instagram at all. 3y

Just finished - but it took awhile. I did not like this retelling. But I‘m sure there are people who might. I found it annoying. Like the author tried to hard to keep the story and did not really understand the characters in the time she chose. I loved this round of #lmpbc overall!

Traci1 That's disappointing. The cover is so pretty. I'd probably have picked this one up just because of that. 4y

This is basically the original story written in modern times and geared towards a younger audience. While I have read the original, I didn't really remember it. While reading, I started to remember the original, so it did that really well. However, the slang bothered me (maybe that means I'm old now?) and I found myself rolling my eyes often. I didn't love nor hate it. #lmpbc

I can imagine that it‘s hard to transport the plot of one of Austen‘s fantastic novels to modern times... but surely it could be done better than this? A few tweaks here and there and removals of some ridiculous plot lines, and this might not have taken me nearly 2 weeks to read.

I can‘t pan it, as it was fun to compare to the original and it has Henry Tilney in it. 😍😂

⭐️⭐️1/2

It pains me to say this about a book I‘m sending on for #LMPBC.😬

balletbookworm I read this in galley form before it came out bc I was so excited to see Val McDermid - who is KNOWN for writing incredibly gritty police procedurals - update this novel and it‘s just a bland rewrite with no stakes or teeth. I was so disappointed 4y

I believe writing a #retelling is much difficulter than writing one's own book. Which elements of the classic novel should be left out, which ones should stick in?

A modern reimagining of a classic story. A young girl with a heart full of romance and a desire for intrigue gets an opportunity to leave her humble home and attend a festival in a big city. She meets a dashing young man, and new friends. Gets invited to their family estate. Where she sees monsters in every dark corner. The lesson is that there are monsters closer to home. Well written and engaging. A little predictable. But enjoyable, overall.

#ValsNorthangerAbbey Discussion questions posted. @Annl

My answers: I have read the original, but about 5 years ago now. I really enjoyed it - it led to me doing my dissertation on Ann Radcliffe's Gothic novels!

DebinHawaii I read and reread Austen's NA years ago and enjoyed it although it's not my favorite of her books and it's one of my least read of her books. Since it had been a while, I'm currently rereading it on Serial Reader (at Chapter 16) & I'm listening to the audiobook to refresh myself as we read Val's version. I'm finding I'm enjoying it much more now. 📚💜 (edited) 6y
Pamwurtzler I just read Austen‘s NA a couple of weeks ago for the first time so I‘d have some idea what was going on in #valsnorthangerabbey. It was honestly not my favorite either. @DebinHawaii @Annl (edited) 6y

#ValsNorthangerAbbey #BuddyRead Finished Chapters 1-5 for this week. Catherine "Cat" is just as silly in this era as she was in Jane's but it's light & entertaining unlike The Silmarillion.? ?Max says he thinks this book could be improved if it actually was a picture book with the story acted out by cats-but he says that actual cats are far less puerile than the characters in this book. (Max has been at the thesaurus again...)?#catsoflitsy ?❤️

rubyslippersreads Tell Max that Nicky and Sadie say cats make anything better. 😸 6y
GondorGirl If 'Northanger Abby' was done as a picture book featuring cats I would totally read it. 6y

Annl I agree with you @DebinHawaii. Can't wait to start the next 5 chapters! 6y
Leftcoastzen Max looks very handsome in glasses! 6y
jenniferw88 @DebinHawaii @Annl I'm glad we're all enjoying it! 6y
DebinHawaii @rubyslippersreads Max agrees with Nicky & Sadie! 😽❤️❤️ @GondorGirl I think there are many classics that would benefit from cats! 😹😹😹 @Tanzy13 😻 @Leftcoastzen And so smart too! 😹👍 @Annl @jenniferw88 Yes! It's been fun & easy to keep up with! 👍👍 6y

#valsnorthangerabbey #buddyread ?Max says, "That face you make when your mom is STILL trying to convince you this book she's making you read with her has a?in it & you know it's just a silly human named Cat."? Chap 3 out of the 5 we're reading this week. So far I'm liking how McDermid is updating the story.?Also-Max's views & opinions on the gullibility & intelligence of dogs are his own & do not necessarily reflect his mom's?#catsoflitsy?❤️

This is my pile for tonight.
One chapter fron the Silmarillion for the #LotRChapterADay readalong. Finish chapter 2 of Northanger Abbey for the #ValsNorthangerAbbey #BuddyRead And if it's not too late in the night by the time l'm done, a few chapter of a Miss Fisher mystery.

Really, l've never done anything like this before joining Litsy 😆

It really didn't take me much to cave in and join the #ValsNorthangerAbbey #BuddyRead l've meant to read this book since it first arrived at the bookshop. It'd be a shame not to join.

And my dragons book has arrived 😍

#ValsNorthangerAbbey #buddyread Kicked off this buddy read with the first 2 chapters-we're reading 5 chapters a week. This updated take is set in Edinburgh & Catherine Moreland is called 'Cat.' I'm curious to see how it plays out.🤔 🐱Max says that he has been betrayed!😾His mom told him that this book has a cat in it. She tricked him-it's not a cat-it's a silly human called 'Cat!'🙀If you can't trust your mom, who can you trust?! #catsoflitsy🐱❤️

LauraJ Poor Max. 6y
Bookzombie Max‘s mom is very creative. 😁 6y
jenniferw88 @DebinHawaii sorry Max! It's my fault your mom lied to you! 6y
DebinHawaii @LauraJ @Bookzombie I prefer to look at it as a sin of omission. I just didn't specify the type of 'cat!' 😆🙀😽 He got extra treats and all if forgiven. @jenniferw88 It's OK--he is honored that you welcomed him to read along! Hah! 😽❤️ 6y
SandyW Poor Max, it's tough coming to grip with the fact that you're not the center of the universe! 6y

#ValsNorthangerAbbey I live in Dorset - there's no such place as Piddle Wallop, but we do have a River Piddle & place names associated with it!

If you want a laugh, take a look at this: http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/11058774.21_of_the_funniest_place_names_in...

Edit: Also, I thought it unrealistic that you could get from Dorset to Edinburgh in a day, but it will take 8hrs 10mins according to Google Maps!

@Annl

April2 My grandparents live in Dorset, in Swanage! I love it there! Never heard of this place before!x 6y

I'm very excited that the #ValsNorthangerAbbey #buddyread with @Annl & @jenniferw88 starts tomorrow! 🤗I did some #audiosouping 🍲listening to Austen's NA to get in the mood. Today's soup was a kitchen experiment-Classic 'Chicken' Noodle Soup but meatless-using jackfruit (my first time cooking with this fruit & meat substitute). It turned out well-my soup clients are fans. Recipe is on the blog for #soupersundays -recipe link👇🏻#isavedachicken 🐔

Beck9lol Ohh this looks amazing! I have a can of jackfruit just waiting to be used. Now I know what to do with it. Thanks!!! 6y
LA_Mead I've never even heard of jackfruit but I'll have to check it out! 6y

DebinHawaii @Beck9lol I have some more cans to experiment with but I was happy with how this turned out! 🍲👍 6y
DebinHawaii @LA_Mead I'd been hearing about it for a while but this is the first time I worked with it. Trader Joe's apparently has cans of it now. 👍 6y
TricksyTails Jackfruit soup sounds interesting! I'd love to try it! 😋 6y
SandyW I've never thought to try jackfruit in soup. I've only ever used it as a pulled pork sandwich (lightly sauteed, then add bbq sauce and heat thru). This sounds delishn Thanks for the inspiration. 6y
