'Sheer joy... Giddy and glam and a hearty update of Pride and Prejudice’ Jessie Burton, author of The Miniaturist From the bestselling author of Prep, American Wife and Sisterland comes this brilliant retelling of Austen’s classic set in modern day Cincinnati. The Bennet sisters have been summoned from New York City. Liz and Jane are good daughters. They’ve come home to suburban Cincinnati to get their mother to stop feeding their father steak as he recovers from heart surgery, to tidy up the crumbling Tudor-style family home, and to wrench their three sisters from their various states of arrested development. Once they are under the same roof, old patterns return fast. Soon enough they are being berated for their single status, their only respite the early morning runs they escape on together. For two successful women in their late thirties, it really is too much to bear. That is, until the Lucas family’s BBQ throws them in the way of some eligible single men . . . Chip Bingley is not only a charming doctor, he’s a reality TV star too. But Chip's friend, haughty neurosurgeon Fitzwilliam Darcy, can barely stomach Cincinnati or its inhabitants. Jane is entranced by Chip; Liz, sceptical of Darcy. As Liz is consumed by her father’s mounting medical bills, her wayward sisters and Cousin Willie trying to stick his tongue down her throat, it isn’t only the local chilli that will leave a bad aftertaste. But where there are hearts that beat and mothers that push, the mysterious course of love will resolve itself in the most entertaining and unlikely of ways. And from the hand of Curtis Sittenfeld, Pride & Prejudice is catapulted into our modern world singing out with hilarity and truth.

#MayMovieMagic Nothing says #ModernLove more than a Jane Austen retelling ❤️The Bennett Family has been relocated to the suburbs of Cincinnati, Liz is a magazine writer & Jane a yoga instructor. And the hot bachelor is a former reality TV star. The novel captures the spirit of the original, while cleverly weaving in elements (bypass surgery, the Paleo diet, high tech venture capitalists) that make the story very 21st century. I liked it❣️

GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen weird but works - try drinking sage tea (literally stick dried sage into a tea strainer). Tastes like drinking a bad pizza or something but oddly works very well for sore throats. Don‘t drink more than a few mugs a day but morning, midday, afternoon and evening is fine. (edited) 2w

3/5 stars. Some of the changes i found interesting, some of them i found completely against what the original characters would have done. Not my favorite, but not terrible.

Getting slightly more interesting. Still doing things that i was not expecting. That reveal in the second part totally threw me for a loop. Adds a new layer to the story, but I‘m not sure what‘s going to happen next. About 100 pages left in the book.

I enjoyed this book more than I maybe should have. The storyline (albeit tacky and unrealistic) manages to suck you in somehow. It took me 50 pages to really get into it, but if you‘re looking for a chick flick in book form (with romance, reality TV, and wealthy family drama), this is it. I love Jane Austen so it was fun to find the parallels between this book and P&P. And, I gotta say... I‘m looking forward to The Bachelorette even more now.

I really should quit doing this to myself. I swear off Jane Austen retellings, but then one gets lots of buzz on social media, and I get sucked in. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. It was clever in places and cringy in places. Typical of an adaptation.

I didn‘t like this retelling of Pride and Prejudice. There were some strange twists & things thrown in that just felt kinda icky. The characters were the same the throughout the book. I felt like there so little chemistry between Liz and Darcy too. Overall it was kind of entertaining to read. I still love me a good temporary romance of course but this one just didn‘t work quite well for me. ⭐️⭐️

Last week found us hunkered down at home for the beginning of the week due to cold temps and the latter part? Well we were passing around the plague...ok so I'm being dramatic, but a fever and upper respiratory are 😫. So we ventured out for some thrifting tonight after work. I FINALLY found a copy of Eligible! @biblio_ginger got me American Wife last week through a swap. Two more and I have everything Curtis has written 😍. (cont. in comments)

LitDrivenGirl I'm contemplating a Jane Austen read month. Pairing this with the original Pride and Prejudice and a few others. Not this month, though, I'm busy enjoying Reading Blackout 😁. Confession, I've never read P&P and once when I started to...I wasn't a big fan of it, but I figure I like the adaptions well enough I need to get around to reading it one of these days. 4mo

This is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice. Whilst I enjoyed it and struggled at times to put it down, to the be honest I think I would have enjoyed it more if I didn't know it was supposed to be a retelling. Personally I didn't agree with some of choices the author made in modernising the classic. Reading reviews there seems to be a real divide between people who loved it and those that didn't. I will be reading more of the Austin Project.

Anyone else have a bad habit of starting a book, pausing, picking up another, and forgetting about the former? Apparently I have 5 other books in this group. Guess I found my New Year‘s bookish resolution 😅So this one took me a while, but it was so funny, clever, and cute! Loved the modern twists on all the characters and story line. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I did not love this book. I disliked most of the characters. (I LOVE P&P), but I could not put it down. It did a good job of satirizing modern day- but I just did not like any of them. I would love to hear others thought.

BethM I bailed on this because I disliked the characters so much. 6mo
Chrissyreadit @BethM I came close to putting it away, at least twice- but was able to get through because I liked Ham, Shane and Georgie. This was not the same feel as P&P- just mean people. 6mo
Dragon I didn‘t get very far into it as I didn‘t like anyone. I have a to like or at least sympathize with someone. 😀🐉 6mo
Chrissyreadit @Dragon it was hard. I‘ve never finished a book with this many characters I disliked. 6mo

Guys, this might be my favorite modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice yet. It does a good job of modernizing the story and also making interesting and smart changes. My favorite is the Whickham changes. Rather than have it be one person, his story is spread to two different people and it works so well. I know there are some who may not like it but I adored how modern and firmly in present society it is.

This is so true! Time moves faster the older you get. When I was 6 my grandpa told me this was because the older we get the more moments we have in life. When we are young we have fewer moments so everything seems longer, but when we are old we have a lot of moments so things seem to go by fast. I think he said it better than I can here 😊

Ok so I started this. I LOVE Pride and Prejudice so I thought hey why not. Well at first I didn‘t like it but I always give a book until the 20% (if I can) before I bail. I think the audio reading of this book is what turned me off. The narrator read Liz as an over 40 year old who sounded like a valley girl. I feel like I gave it a chance and it just grated on my nerves. There wasn‘t really anything likable. Maybe if I had read it in my own voices I would have liked it better. Maybe not. I felt like the witty that made Lizzy who she was in P&P was missing.

So I know I read this a few years ago, but I didn‘t remember anything about it. So when I stumbled across it at my library, I decided to give it another shot. As soon as I opened it up I remembered...Reader, I do not like this book. At all. I have a soft spot for Jane Austen retellings (By the Book was charming) but “Eligible” is just joyless. I don‘t think it works as a P&P spinoff OR as its own story. It does work as a hate-read.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. A super smart, entertaining, thorough, and astute modern take on Pride and Prejudice, with a few brilliant choices (such as making Kitty and Lydia unemployed crossfit fiends who follow Paleo diets). It was witty and hilarious in a very Austenian way. I do, however, stand by my early assessment that Sittenfeld's interpretation is quite cynical and dark, lacking in affection and generosity. Amazing as an #audiobook!
