I absolutely devoured this book! Usually, in multi-POV books, I have a great preference for one over the others. Not this time! I was equally invested in all of the characters.

A nested story about Priya, a teen visiting family in India, and her great-grandmother's experiences during Partition. Takes a bizarre turn at the end, morphing into an Ocean's 11 heist attempt. My favourite part was the history of Partition, and what Priya's grandmother went through b/c it was a real part of history. The heist part at the end wasn't really believable to me, but it was fun and it lightened the atmosphere after the Partition tale

The Embalmer by Anne-Renée Caillé has been translated from its original French. Given the layout, I'm guessing the little vignettes are poem stories, though in English they are more prose. It is the musings of a daughter regarding her father's job as an embalmer, how he joined those mysterious ranks, and unusual cases he shared. 📚📚📚📚

This story is exactly the theme of that ep- two enemies must work together to survive in a deadly jungle and fund their way back to the safety of their tribes. And along the way, learn to understand one another better.

A sweeping saga spanning decades. The hunt for a treasure worth millions. Part mystery, part history, this is a tale worthy of the classics writers, a legacy of Hugo, Dickens, and Tolstoy. Spanning the decades between 1776 and 1832, it mainly follows Xavier Traversier and Jacob 'Jake' Loring. This tale is a rich medley of philosophic ideas, especially Rousseau. It is a wide-ranging tale, exploring notable events and practices of the time.

I fell in love with this world that is very much Supernatural meets Warehouse 13. It‘s so much fun, and all of the characters are enjoyable. I loved getting to meet the other magic users too. From Voudan, Hoodoo, and witchcraft, to root workers and Christian mystics, there‘s such variety!

It took me a bit to get into this story, but once I did, wow! I really grew to love Derek and Liam. I like the other characters well enough, but my favourite is Corey. He's a wayfarer Scion, a descendant of Hermes, and he's so painfully shy. I want to cuddle him and protect him. He's brave underneath though. Overall, a great read. I'm ready for the next installment!

A charming collection of haiku centered around the seasons, accompanied by gorgeous artwork. The author calls these 'riddle-kus‘. At the end there's a section detailing how to write riddle-ku, and some suggested reading books. I read this with my cubs, cand we all enjoyed it. I've written haiku before, but it's been awhile and these poems inspired me to write poetry again. And my cubs to try for themselves! Recommended for those who love poetry.

This is a delightful picture book following the cycle of seasons. You get to see all kinds animals that have made the DMZ home. It's truly a natural wonderland. It was so sad about the grandfather though. It's too deep for a children's book, but I wanted to know his thoughts. Was he from the area now North Korea? Did he fight in the war? Lose family during it? What were his thoughts on the changes in the DMZ?

The Jade Rebellion by Alanna Mackenzie jumps right into the story, as Walter seeks to find a way to free his friend from a prison ship bound for a forsaken penal colony. I liked the concept of the story- artificial intelligence Vs magic, nature wisdom Vs technology. There's much potential here. It's a treatise on the dangers of letting our technology rule us and forgetting the magic of our natural world.

When the Whales Walked was a wonderful read, and a fairly quick one too. It's geared more towards middle-grade kids, who have at least some science knowledge. Many of the lessons in here were new to me. So many animals have gone through such radical changes over the millennia, with several shifting from sea to land to sea again. Or land to sky to land.

Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons was one wild ride! This first book in the series follows a Frankenstenian nested story format. This is a complex story, with brilliant world-building. It‘s full of intrigue, action and introspection that spans millennia and involves gods, demons, and dragons! It's wonderful in its own right, but I feel it didn't quite live up to the hype heaped upon it.

This was quite the unusual graphic novel. Despite following bodysnatchers making drugs from the deceased, I became really invested in the story. This mirrors (not so) ancient practises that used mummy powder as medicine. This was fascinating from an anthropologist's point of view. The artwork is stunning, perfect for this gritty tale of life, death, and resurrection. I felt the characters were compelling too.

The play on names with those from Disney's Beauty and the Beast is amusing. Candlestick, alluding to Lumiere's form, that's just one. There are lots of hidden visual references too. Roses can be found in garmenting, actual flowers, carvings, and more. I'm not gonna give all of them away, but it made reading this extra fun. And Belle has a pretty complicated story. She's not fluffy and innocent, but she's not f***ed up over it all either.

Each chapter is a separate vignette with different characters, and unrelated stories. The only constant is Seiya, a mysterious man who serves as a guide to the underworld. I like the attention to detail in each vignette. Chapter Three is a good example. This involves the spirit of a suicide jumper. Let's just say, I've seen what a train victim looks like, and the art was spot on. Recommended!

Oh, but I loved this story! It was so much fun! There was a lot of snarky commentary, like the Percy Jackson books. The whole aspect of having the inner potential for magic awakened/ measured using a book that told of one of the first wizards was pretty cool. Overall, a great read, perfect for fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and related series. Highly recommended!

This book doesn't feel like the end of the story. Still not a Khya fan tho. She might've had the right reasons, but she, like Varan, decided to play god and I'm sure there will be long-lasting repercussions. I really wanted to smack all of them, Khya for suggesting and the rest for agreeing. I love Tessen! So adorable, and I grok his hypersensitivity. Anyhoo, this was a pretty awesome continuation of their story. I'm hoping it's not the last!

Though it started off a bit in the slow side, I really enjoyed once Jaclyn was off to free her father. This is great for showing women can be every bit as brave and valorous as men. More description would have been nice. Make no mistake, though! This book is well worth checking out, especially for those who enjoy rewoven fairytales. My only big grumble is the Christian angle, which I wasn't expecting.

This was my first Inspector Shan story, and while it wasn't what I initially expected, it was quite an enjoyable read. I went in thinking that it was set centuries earlier than it really was. I'm not normally a fan of Communist-era centred fiction. Getting a glimpse into Tibetan culture was great, especially since that's what I was looking for with my prior expectations.

This story, 'sequel' to the classic Pride & Prejudice, plays the long game. The events cover a year and more, delving deep into one young woman‘s transformation from 'silly girl‘ to 'sensible adult‘. I did so feel for Kitty, to be labelled such things as she was. I enjoyed most of the characters to be honest, except Frederick and Lydia, but really, it was descriptions of time and place that I enjoyed most.

'playing cards‘ was one of my favourite poems. It reminded me of a quote from the show House, MD where Dr House somewhat cynically, and sadly, notes “If the wonder is gone when the truth is known, then there never really was any.” Both poem and quote speak to the metaphysicist in me, both perhaps taken in a different light than intended.
