I struggeled with my reading last year. Today I checked Goodreads and I am very much ahead of my schedule (goal is 75, last year was 100 and I barely made it).

Just finished ReDawn, only to discover I started with the second novella. Now I'm off to read Sunreach. It will still be fun, I know it!!!

This book wants to be YA Star Trek with enough action to get a movie deal, but instead it is just boring. The plot 'twists' are very predictable. The characters represent standard tropes, some die pointlessly because the authors could not make the story go forward any other way. Every chance for real character advancement, or actual, heart-felt drama are thrown down the drain.

I think I know what's keeping me from posting much on Litsy. I don't have the motivation to snap pictures of the books I am reading. Time is so short these days and somehow, taking pictures of what I am reading is not so important. Ughhh maybe I should just post without pictures? I have read a couple really bad netgalleys recently, and I have read a lot of books this year I haven't posted about here...

The main character is a scientist searching for a cure for his daughter. One night, he is visited by his DNA.
The conclusion is battling poison with poison, bu there were some sections that basically said you are the master of your DNA and can heal yourself by just really wanting it, which left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
I think the story has a solid foundation, but I am not sure I like the message I get from it.

I recently got a Netgalley account and this was one of the first ARCs I received.
I really liked this graphic novel. Somehow, on my first read, the text bubbles were missing. The story worked without those, too, so the art is damn expressive. It was better with the full story though.
Horror, monsters only children can see, and a talking stuffed Octopus. I can see myself picking up this and the next book when it is released at my comic book store.

julesG 👏👏 Not so sure about the ghosts, but I want to know about Mori's past, if Thaniel is doomed, and what role Grace is playing. She'll hopefully come up soon and not at the end of the book. 2y

Start digging into our #Buddyread now! But I have a problem: I can't remember how much we decided to read this week 🙈

julesG 5 chapters? And I haven't started yet. Instead I keep checking Litsy, listen to audiobooks, clean, repot plants, water the orchids, sort the custard packages by BB dates. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ It's not a reading slump, it's coping with my anxiety of catching this CoVid thing and ending up in hospital. I try to stay positive, but it's nagging at me. Sorry. I'll catch up. Promise. 2y

I have read the whole trilogy by now, and I think I promised @julesG to let her know what I thought of them.
I liked the books, it was a kind of complex YA style. Easy to read, story and characters more complex.
It is just not what you would expect. Inspired by Norse mythology - I thought I would see something familiar here, but the story is ONLY inspired.
There are lengths, but overall I recommend them. There should be an English version

Sentient Weapons are a late obsession of mine, as I plan for one of the characters of my DnD group to find one soon. This Novella is about a sentient Sword and it's nameless wielder, going on a pilgrimage.
I liked the authors other novels ok, but this story is definitely his best one so far.
A short and fun read!

night_shift It... never occurred to me that this could be a thing in fiction books. When I think of sentient weapons, the only thing that comes to mind is Excalibur from Soul Eater, which is like the worst character ever lol though, that could be a funny DnD thing.. 2y

The Nevernight Chronicle and I had a problem.l since the beginning. I liked the conclusion much more than Godsgrave, but I feel I have some rather harsh words to say:
This feels like a YA novel that the author desperately tried to make an adult novel. So he introduced lots and lots of cursing, sex, and gore, without understanding that the storyline stays a YA story with tones and tones of YA tropes.
I liked the books, but this annoys me to no end

uwak I felt this way too. I think it would've helped somewhat if Kristoff had aged up the characters more but I think him also being a primarily YA author was also a significant part. 2y
Sweetkokoro This is what has worried me about starting this series, I don‘t want an adult fantasy book with YA tropes or bogged down with sex, gore and violence to “seem adult “. I wasn‘t a fan of his YA book Aurora Burning so it‘s made me hesitant to touch any of his other stuff. Also I have seen a few people with similar complaints you have about this series. 2y

This book is near future sci-fi, Bible retelling, and a hero on a quest in this order. On 900 pages. It is too much. In his better books, Stephenson is lengthy at times, but this felt if he tried to do all of this at once and it just did not work out. The last part could have been good, but I overflew the pages because I just wanted it to end.
Interesting concept, but just too much ideas in one book.

My reading progress this month. I am very unhappy about my reading slump, but I know the reason now:
I have 19 books on my MountTBR challenge, but tons of new ones I really want to dig in - I think I am stretching this one so I don't have to pick an old book over a new, exciting one.
So, I am ditching my #MountTBR challenge. At this stage, all that happens is that the new release become books old ones, repeat.

Hey Littens, a non-bookish post here
Today, after a long illness of severe depression, I went to work for the first time in 6 months and was told my contract would not be extended in February as I believed.
There are many good things about this, I can draw more, and I have 2 months vacation starting December. But I am really sad, it just sucks right now.
On top of that, I have no concentration left for reading ☹️

Thank you for listening ♥️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa First.....The drawling is beautiful. Second....is it possible they are not renewing your contract because of your health issues? If so, do you have any recourse? 2y
DuckOfDoom @Riveted_Reader_Melissa it was a contract for a PHD position. Because of the little progress I made in the last 2 years, the professor can't see that there will be progress in the future. There is also the question of funding. I'm not 100% sure if I would have gotten the same treatment with a physical health issue, though 2y

DuckOfDoom @Sace I have almost never searched for hashtags on Litsy - I look upon my feed of people I follow, and find new people through the comments. Hashtags are ok, but not really needed here😅 2y

Graywacke @DuckOfDoom @Sace i use hashtags for group reads. They‘re really useful there. The thing that I really really don‘t like lately is that I‘m constantly hitting links by accident and find scrolling very difficult. (Has to do with an iPhone iOS update). 2y
Sace @Graywacke I don't have problems with that kind of hashtag use and I will be the first person to hit up a cat hashtag but sometimes I see posts with more hashtags than content. I should probably confess here that I might not completely understand the theory and use of them 🤣 2y
ljuliel Thanks for the replies. I agree, the BOOKS seem to have taken a back seat at times. Another thing that sorta bugs me ( not a lot, but ....) is I see truckloads of pictures of books people buy or get at the library, but where are the reviews ? There seem to be some folks who like to show what they buy, but either never read them, or put a review in here. I like the reviews. It‘s where I get ideas for new books to read. 2y
ljuliel @Graywacke That‘s been mentioned a lot in these questionnaires. I had the same problem. It happened after an Apple update. They‘ve had 2 more since then, which has made the problem much better. It‘s not completely gone, but it‘s better. Check to see if you‘ve added those newest updates. Mine says version 13.2. I hope this helps. 2y
DuckOfDoom @ljuliel I think book hauls are great if they are followed with reviews! I can often spot a couple of books that spark my interest, and when a review gets posted, I can decide if I want to add it to my TBR. But that is still about the books. If it's more about the pretty picture of books, I loose interest. But I just don't follow those posts, and am pretty happy with the content of the rest 2y
Graywacke @ljuliel mine is 13.2, and no updates available. 😕 2y
ljuliel Well, darn. I was hoping that‘d help. @Graywacke 2y
Sace @DuckOfDoom @ljuliel I don't mind book mail and book haul posts or photo challenges because I don't like to get out and it feels like being at a book store. I've always been drawn more to a cover. One thing that social media has changed for me is wanting to read a book BECAUSE of a review I read. But before social media, I would just wander into a store and wait for a book to call to me. 2y
ljuliel @Sace. Yes it‘s much easier to shop for books while reading reviews online. Going into a bookstore with no ideas at all is a bit daunting. I like to at least have an idea of what to search for. 2y

DuckOfDoom @wanderinglynn great! I am so happy that there are so many of you who want to do this buddyread! In the next days or ao, I will have a look at the length of the stories and we can decide the pacing of the buddyread 😁 2y

This is one of the very few books that would have been better if they were longer. Magic Houses scheming for power in a world were Magic is boosted by the suffering of others? Sounds great! But the intrigue really fell short with the straightforward writing. And I would have preferred to skip one point of view for a plot twist along the book.

DuckOfDoom @LibrarianRyan I believe it is a new Waterstones edition that fits well with the "The Starless Sea" cover 2y

cjk Gorgeous! 😍 2y
LibrarianRyan @DuckOfDoom That would explain it. The UK starless Sea cover is so beautiful. I don't like the US cover. But then again, I'm getting the book free so I can not really complain. 2y

It could not start out more YA clichée than this, but the book got better at the end. I feel like the second book could be more interesting!
