I‘m so surprised that it seems readers either love or hate this book. I loved it! Moriarty‘s snarky look at real people and real lives always seems so funny and honest to me. Then there‘s the twist- and it became a thriller! I listened to most of it on audiobook and it is excellent!

Thanks to @Reviewsbylola I starting reading this two days ago and I have done little else but read this book since then. For #truecrime fans, this is a story of church going couples in Texas in the 80‘s that get tangled up in an affair that ends in an ax murder. It is well written, concise, and to the point without too many legal details but lots of dialogue.

I‘m fascinated by Blenheim Palace after visiting there twice, so this book about Consuelo Vanderbilt was a must read for me. Her mother traded Consuelo and her Vanderbilt fortune to the Duke of Marlborough for his title and prestige. Harper does and adequate job of following Consuelo‘s life and love story. I find this period of time compelling thanks to Downton Abbey.

I was fortunate to be able to attend a seminar by a LFL board member yesterday. This free book movement is now pointed towards young readers who are underprivileged and most likely do not have many books in their home or parents that read to them. While this is very admirable, it makes my love of sharing my books in my LFL with old and young readers in a middle class neighborhood seem superfluous. ☹️

StaceyKondla You can feel good no matter what neighbourhood your LFL is set in. Sharing the love of reading in no small thing, and if you contribute to generating empathy and broader thinking through the sharing of story you are doing a very good thing. 3mo
Mdargusch Thanks for saying that @StaceyKondla - I needed some reassurance. It sure is fun even if the people in my neighborhood aren‘t underprivileged. 3mo
wanderinglynn That is admirable, but misguided to me. If a young reader has no one to read to them/help them read, then how is a LFL going to help? I get the access to books part, but don‘t young readers need someone to read with them? And just because that‘s the direction the board is choosing to go, it doesn‘t make your contributions superfluous. There are many demographics that lack access to books. And reading is important for all. (edited) 3mo
See All 15 Comments
Reviewsbylola I‘m glad you got to go!! And I wouldn‘t feel bad—sharing your love of reading is admirable no matter the circumstances! 3mo
Reviewsbylola Perfectly said! @wanderinglynn 3mo
MicheleinPhilly Spot on @wanderinglynn! And apart from access to books, LFLs contribute to a sense of community and sharing, something that I think is vital for any neighborhood regardless of demographics. 3mo
wanderinglynn @MicheleinPhilly Exactly. LFLs are for the community they are in. As a side note, I didn‘t know that LFL was an organization with a board & all. I thought it was just a social movement. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3mo
mdm139 I am sure your neighbors appreciate your efforts. My hoa doesn‘t allow them or I would have one. I give away books with candy on Halloween instead and my neighbors love it. 3mo
LibrarianRyan @wanderinglynn yeP “Little Free Library“ is even copyrighted and trademarked. They have a registray of little libraries put up around the globe, but there are more of these than are registered because you have to pay a $40 fee. We have our own Little Library program at my library and I have to always be careful who I say it. 3mo
LibrarianRyan @Mdargusch -It takes more than just making books accessible to get kids to read. It helps HE** yes, but it's not the end. Kids will take them because they are free, or it looks fun. But it will take more to get them to want to read them. Plus, especially with kids, what books are included matter. Old cruddy books wont get read. I can lecture extensively about this (and have), so just asking volunteers to provide free books does not = success 3mo
wanderinglynn @LibrarianRyan Well I learned something new today. 👍🏻 Thanks! 😀 3mo
LibrarianRyan @Mdargusch Continue what you are doing. Don't feel pressure to do or change something you are not comfortable with. If you want to try something, then try. My friend puts a “suggestion“ notebook in her LL (not registered). And she has come to me more than once to find books that one kid asks for. that is when someone isn't taking the suggestion notebook. 😁 3mo
LeahBergen I believe EVERY neighbourhood in every demographic benefits from a LFL. Being able to “afford” books doesn‘t necessarily mean that everyone provides them for (or reads them with) their children. I stick the odd classic (like Dracula or Jane Eyre) in my neighbourhood LFL as it is on the walking path from a junior high school. I‘m tickled to think of a kid discovering these books at the same age as I did. So keep up your important LFL work! 👏🏻👏🏻 3mo
Mdargusch Such great comments you all! It‘s a very interesting movement and I just wasn‘t aware there was this focus on underprivileged kids. You make a great point @wanderinglynn about those kids don‘t have anyone to read to them. @MicheleinPhilly the community piece is one of my favorite aspects. I‘ve met and chatted with many neighbors that I wouldn‘t normally talk with. I appreciate your support @StaceyKondla @LibrarianRyan @LeahBergen @mdm139 @Reviewsbylola 3mo

This is a different type of true crime because the convicted rapist/murderer was actually innocent. The story becomes a mother‘s quest for the truth as she spends years digging for the truth to set her son free. The injustice of it all is mind blowing and heartbreaking.

After checking my GR TBR I came across this book that I added 4 years ago! And I have yet to read it!

I‘m not sure why since I love New Orleans and Ruta Sepetys so I am moving this one up nearer the top of my list

#easy #maymoviemagic

What did I just read? I‘m thinking the author might have been on an acid trip while writing this?

Reading this with my family‘s notations in the margins was very entertaining and made the book a definite pick! It wasn‘t scary but was creepy and perfect for a Halloween buddy read or a mark up book club.

Puppy nap time so I‘m starting this one for our #familymarkupbookclub. Is it actually scary?

MicheleinPhilly I wouldn‘t characterize it as scary. Spooky, but not scary. 4mo
wanderinglynn Too cute! ❤️🐶❤️🐶 Love sleeping puppers! 4mo
Patchshank There's one part I found a little creepy. Most of it is eh. But I still wanted to see what happened. 4mo

This book has some of my favorite elements - a coming of age story, a sweet love story, and a possible murder mystery. I fell in love with Kya and her story of abandonment and survival. Yes this book lives up to the hype for me!

Thankfully, the puppies took a long nap so I could finish the book.

JohannaRose Aww your puppy is so cute! And I also really enjoyed this book! I agree it lives up to the hype! 4mo

Kya has a #lustforlife in the swamp. I will be sad when this book is over because the imagery and story are beautifully woven together. Kya knows every leaf, shell, and feather in her swamp since she has nothing else, having been deserted by everyone she loves.

This is one of my all time favorite nonfiction #botm selections. One day Christopher Knight drove to the woods in Maine, left his car, and walked into the woods. He stayed there for 27 years without human interaction and surviving on only what he could steal from nearby cottages or forage for in the woods. But why? Fascinating look into the life of a hermit.

I loved this YA mystery told by 4 students who witnessed the death of a classmate. Who exactly was involved in the death of Simon just as he was ready to reveal secrets of the students online? Or was it an accident?

This does not read as a YA and one of my favorite thrillers last year.

Flavia is growing up. She and Dogger have gone into business together as detectives and their first case involves a finger found in her sister‘s wedding cake. As usual, the quirky characters of Bishops Lacey play a big part in the mystery. Alan Bradley has written another fun whodunit.
