What did I just read? I‘m thinking the author might have been on an acid trip while writing this?

Reading this with my family‘s notations in the margins was very entertaining and made the book a definite pick! It wasn‘t scary but was creepy and perfect for a Halloween buddy read or a mark up book club.

This book has some of my favorite elements - a coming of age story, a sweet love story, and a possible murder mystery. I fell in love with Kya and her story of abandonment and survival. Yes this book lives up to the hype for me!

Thankfully, the puppies took a long nap so I could finish the book.

Kya has a #lustforlife in the swamp. I will be sad when this book is over because the imagery and story are beautifully woven together. Kya knows every leaf, shell, and feather in her swamp since she has nothing else, having been deserted by everyone she loves.

This is one of my all time favorite nonfiction #botm selections. One day Christopher Knight drove to the woods in Maine, left his car, and walked into the woods. He stayed there for 27 years without human interaction and surviving on only what he could steal from nearby cottages or forage for in the woods. But why? Fascinating look into the life of a hermit.

I loved this YA mystery told by 4 students who witnessed the death of a classmate. Who exactly was involved in the death of Simon just as he was ready to reveal secrets of the students online? Or was it an accident?

The first part this book depicts life of Parisian refugees fleeing the German occupation of Paris. The author follows different families as they try to survive life on the road. The second part of the book shows a glimpse of the life in a French village that is occupied by the Germans. This account of the Donner Party follows Sarah Graves and her family as they crossed the country in search of a better life. I appreciated that the author focused on one person during this story of tragedy and survival since there were so many people in the group. Sarah Graves was so inspirational to read about as she battled the snow, cold, and loved ones being used for food after their deaths.

The men in these books were all #sofaraway when they ran into dire straits (😉😉😉) I am inspired by these survival stories of physical and mental endurance. The blank wall: a novel of suspense | Elisabeth Sanxay Holding
post image

This is one of my favorite Persephone books because it‘s a suspenseful murder mystery. But this is not your modern thriller since it is really a character study of Lucia, a regular housewife trying to hold her family together while her husband is away at war. She gets tangled in a web of lies, murder, and deceit while making sure the beds are made and food is on the table. It feels like an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

This was another great survival story that took place in Newfoundland in 1914. One hundred and thirty two seal hunters were left stranded on the ice while being caught in a blizzard. I loved the writing of Dorothy Whipple, but I could not finish this book. There are three sisters, each living very different lives. One is married to an abusive monster and his actions with his children crushed my heart. I had to bail. 😢

Reviewsbylola Noooooooooooooo. Bailing on a Persephone?! Unheard of! 😱 2mo
Reviewsbylola Actually our British friend instructed us to add the milk first to break up the fat. 😂😂😂 @Weaponxgirl However her equally British brother agrees with you. (edited) 2mo
Weaponxgirl As a British person I have argued with other brits who put the milk in first 😂 this includes my own family 2mo
Weaponxgirl @Reviewsbylola I meant to reply to you with my last comment 2mo
Reviewsbylola You all take your tea making very seriously! I just got lambasted for making a cup of mocha fireside. I‘m told that English Breakfast and Earl Gray are the only acceptable teas. 😆😆 @Weaponxgirl 2mo
Weaponxgirl @Reviewsbylola we do. Well this can get very classed and region based too. My working class dad would just look at you and go just normal tea and would hate you if you gave him earl grey and I know northerners who will rip the shit out of me if I don‘t have Yorkshire tea in the house. 2mo
Weaponxgirl @Reviewsbylola it‘s very serious business but sometimes just to upset everyone I put a variety of tea bags in one caddy and then make people play Russian roulette with tea. 😆 2mo
Reviewsbylola Omg that‘s hilarious. @Weaponxgirl 2mo
LeahBergen Noooooo!! Not a Dorothy Whipple! Not a Persephone! 😮😮 2mo

Mdargusch Well I guess I will have to try it both ways @Weaponxgirl 🤣 2mo
Mdargusch I hope you read it @LeahBergen so you can tell me if there‘s a happy ending. 2mo
Reviewsbylola It‘s a flavor from David‘s Teas. @LeahBergen 2mo
UwannaPublishme So how does one make a proper cup of tea? 2mo
Mdargusch @UwannaPublishme I was told by a tea lover in London that you must boil the water, never microwave. And always use fresh water! The tea should be something like English breakfast. Steep for around 3-4 minutes(never more than 5!) and do not reheat it. Now - the debate is : add milk before the hot water to break up the fat in the milk. Or does one add the milk after the tea is brewed? Have I missed anything @Weaponxgirl ? 2mo
Weaponxgirl @Mdargusch I don‘t think so. Microwaving tea is sacrilege it‘s true. What tends to happen with milk before tea bag when making in the cup is you can‘t get as good a colour generally in my experience. If it is milky it should have started out as strong tea with lots of milk added for the best flavour otherwise what was the point? 2mo
Weaponxgirl For reference I like mine the colour of he man. 2mo
Mdargusch That makes sense. I tried it your way just now! 👍🏼 @Weaponxgirl (edited) 2mo
UwannaPublishme @Mdargusch @Weaponxgirl Great info! Thank you both. I can see that I haven‘t been steeping my tea long enough. And what if I don‘t add milk at all? I‘m not a big fan. Will that get me kicked out of tea sommelier school? 😁 2mo
Weaponxgirl @UwannaPublishme some teas shouldn‘t be served with milk according to true tea coni suers so I think you are safe. I‘m just banging on about everyday Brit tea. 2mo
Mdargusch Haha! @UwannaPublishme 😂. I‘ve grown to really like it in my English breakfast tea. It‘s a milder version of my usual coffee with creamer that I have every morning. Milk goes really well with that tea. 2mo
DivineDiana I too have switched from morning coffee to English Breakfast Tea with non dairy cream. Started this after reading a British novel. 😉 2mo

What a fun book! Written in the 1930‘s, this satirical look at country life in a small English village has many laughs. Miss Mapp and Miss Lucia are always looking for a way to one up each other in order to be the Queen Bee of the village.
