Here‘s what I‘m listening to and reading this week....all 3 are excellent!! What are you guys reading???

jillrhudy I‘ve got my eye on the Fowler for a library book club pick. What is your impression? 1d
Simona My current read is very slow pacing story, but very good 1d
LibrarianRyan My List is too long. Reading Small Spaces, and I Hate Fairyland book 2. Beyond Watchman, and so many picture books I need to get done. Good thing ILA is going on this week and I have extra desk time so i can get some of this hill conquered. 1d

Cinfhen I‘m only on chapter 7 @jillrhudy but so far, I think this book would be excellent for bookclub. I‘ll keep you posted!!! 1d
Cinfhen Your book sounds very dense @Simona 😘but I‘m glad you‘re trudging along 1d
Cinfhen Good luck making some progress this week @LibrarianRyan it‘s only Tuesday so you have a few days to knock them out 💪🏼❤️ 1d
BarbaraBB I don‘t know any of them! I am reading 1d
BarbaraBB @Simona I loved that book!! 1d
Cinfhen Your book sounds intriguing @BarbaraBB is it for your 50 States challenge??? 1d
CoffeeAndABook Those books all look interesting!! Do you have the house to yourself again? Your time to yourself again? Sorry, I I‘m not informed, I haven‘t been visiting Littenland for a few days. I‘m reading tagged book but it‘s slooooow. It won‘t end! Too good to bail but I‘m ready for it to just ... be over I guess 😂 Already have several books waiting!! 1d
Cinfhen Yup!!!!! I‘m houseguest free until Friday @CoffeeAndABook and I‘m SOOOOO HAPPY 😆 it was a long few weeks but I did enjoy spending time with my parents and other friends from overseas. BTW: I really liked the book you‘re reading!!! But she was a bit of a downer and I get why you‘re ready to say goodbye 😛 1d
TrishB This one - ok thriller so far! 1d
Cinfhen Sounds creepy @TrishB glad you found a book today 😜 1d
BarbaraBB No it‘s just an easy one for the #ATY2019 challenge. It had many good reviews here but so far I‘m still waiting for something to happen! 23h
CoffeeAndABook @Cinfhen Just finished The Cactus and have to admit I cried reading the last few chapters,it really is a very good book. Perhaps not the right book at this time but I‘m glad I read it😊Wow Friday‘s the next round of house guests! Bet you‘re drinking up every second of the precious time until then 😉 but I know having family over is just so worth it. And then you get to enjoy the bliss of having your space to yourself again!! 🙌🏻 (edited) 10h
Cinfhen @CoffeeAndABook I have weekend guests this Friday/ My parents return the following weekend and then I‘m guest free until November 22 🥳🥳🥳 it‘s a lot of work but the reward of quiet time is so worth it! Glad you enjoyed 10h

Red at the Bone | Jacqueline Woodson
post image

Jacqueline Woodson has a gift / she paints stories with words.
With such limited storytelling this novel was so full bodied. The words were leaping and rising off the pages. This is the story of four generations from different economic backgrounds, told in a non-linear format & it‘s magnificent. Five ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
JW is a powerful voice for a new generation of black female writers 💪🏼🙌🏻❤️

TrishB Stacked 👍🏻 1d
Cinfhen It‘s a one sitting read @TrishB so wait for a #KindleDeal because it‘s over in a blink 1d

#SoaringScores The Mongol Derby is the world‘s toughest horse race. A feat of endurance across the vast Mongolian plains once traversed by the people of Genghis Khan, competitors ride 25 horses across a distance of 1000km.

In 2013 Lara Prior-Palmer – nineteen, underprepared but seeking the great unknown – decides on a whim to enter the race. What happened next was history in the making. #SuperFeats
I listened on audio 👍🏻🎧

Cathythoughts Sounds great & that it would be a good one for audio 👍🏻♥️ 2d
Cinfhen Lots of reviewers seemed to be put off by Lara but I found her youth, stupidity, bravado and determination endearing @Cathythoughts She came across as VERY AUTHENTIC if not perhaps a bit naive and spoilt 2d

Thank you so much @BarbaraBB for this wonderful book. Once I started reading the story of young Hattie & her twins I couldn‘t put the book down. Each chapter focused on one of Hattie‘s 11 children as the years move from 1925 - 1980. A remarkable story but still lots of unanswered questions #BookClubWorthy

BarbaraBB I am happy you liked it! Thinking of some other books to share with you! 2d

The Dutch House | Ann Patchett
post image

The Dutch House is ultimately the story of two siblings. First 2/3 of the book was fantastic but I was a little disappointed with the last part. Still a good read but wished the ending was more satisfying. Still a pick and I‘m easily a fan of Ann Patchett 💗

TrishB You‘re cramming them in! Looking forward to this one eventually! 2d
Cinfhen I know!!!! My parents left for a cruise today and I ignored the laundry 🧺 I spent the day doing nothing but reading @TrishB I just finished a third book 😉 2d
TrishB Jealous 😘 just stopped work since 7.30 this morning. Started a book, read 30 pages and don‘t like it. Don‘t know what to read and have only got about 1000 books to choose from! Sorry, rant over. 2d

TheLudicReader This is our book for November‘s book club. 😁 2d
Cinfhen I think it will make for some good discussions @jillrhudy @TheLudicReader I‘m curious to see if others will have similar feelings about the last 1/3 of the book. 2d
Cathythoughts Good to hear ... I was going to recommend for Bookclub , and I‘ve never put forward a book I Haven‘t read before .... 2d
jillrhudy Personally I loved the ending. 1d
Cinfhen @jillrhudy Did you like the mom‘s storyline?? I was really disappointed with her arc and hated the whole May becomes a celebrity and purchases the house. I loved everything else, especially Maeve & Danny‘s relationship. 1d
jillrhudy @Cinfhen Patchett says she doesn‘t like the mom either! The house was all about vanity anyway, so I thought the ending fit. 1d
Cinfhen Hmmmm, interesting point about the house/ vanity @jillrhudy I know we‘re not meant to “like” the mom but I didn‘t believe that she would move back into that house and it pissed me off that she would “care” for Andrea after reconnecting with her children that she had abandoned, knowing that by choosing Andrea she was once again turning her back on her family. 1d

Billypar The end of an era! It's been a great run- such a fun challenge: I've been a little disconnected the past couple months but will definitely join in for MOvember! 😀 3d

#SoaringScores This is actually a review that I‘m posting under a blurb because I feel uncomfortable having to rate a memoir of a dying woman. Julie Yip-Williams was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at age 37. Confronted with such devastating news, Julie began blogging her journey as both a chronicle for her young daughters & a way to channel her rage. She doesn‘t hold back with her anger, fears & often wonders #DidIMakeTheMostOfLovingYou 👇🏼

Cinfhen Julie‘s childhood was equally heartbreaking as she was born blind and was nearly “put to sleep” by her maternal grandmother who was worried caring for a blind child would be too much of a financial & emotional burden for the entire family. My issue with this book was unfortunately Julie was not always sympathetic or likeable (and I feel like an A-hole for saying that) This memoir was just so -so for me. (edited) 4d
Hooked_on_books You shouldn‘t feel like an a-hole. Not every person in this world is likeable. And sometimes crappy things happen to unlikeable people. It is what it is. My dad was controlling and could be a real jerk and when I would say this when I was younger, some people would get terribly offended (they‘d never met him). Yet they wouldn‘t dispute there are people like this in the world. Better to be honest and tactful and you were both. 4d
Joyfulmimi I agree with @Hooked_on_books I appreciate you so I do not waste any of my time reading it 4d
See All 9 Comments
Cinfhen Thank you both for sharing your opinions @Hooked_on_books @Joyfulmimi and making me feel less like a jerk. I agree, crappy things happen to all types of people and I don‘t diminish that Julie Yip was dealt a real shitty hand. I feel sorry for all those that loved and cared for her, and are now left without her. But you can totally skip the book @Joyfulmimi 😉 4d
Cinfhen And I‘m sorry you had a tough dad @Hooked_on_books I know it‘s not always easy to be honest with ourselves when it comes to acknowledging faults of the people we are meant to admire 4d
Hooked_on_books Thanks, but it‘s no big deal. Many people have dealt with way worse than I did. I was just glad I figured out a way to have a relationship with him while shielding myself from his more negative attributes. My sister never figured that out and I predict she‘ll carry that anger forever. It‘s sad, really. 4d
TrishB Think you‘ve been fair and honest💕 4d
Cinfhen Thank you @TrishB I wanted to love this memoir but it was a tough one 🙁 4d
CrowCAH Oh wow for one so young. Sounds like a touching story. 3d

My #20BooksBy2020 Update: Added another book early this morning! Stephen Fry is hilarious 😆 His narration was superb 🙌🏻 I absolutely ♥️ listening to his explanation of the Greek Myths. Big Brother: A Novel | Lionel Shriver
post image

#SoaringScores Finished this book the other day. Lionel Shriver has a knack for creating characters who are completely human with all their flaws and not too pretty personality traits. This book sees Edison, a once svelte talented musician #LeavingPort(ly) behind as he grows morbidly obese. Enter his sister Pandora, who makes it her mission to reverse Edison‘s weighty situation. Sharp & insightful writing. Wasn‘t thrilled with a certain twist😲

#SoaringScores Too literal ?!??! I read this book last year as part of my #JapaneseThriller kick 🦵 Such good storytelling. A teacher gathers her students for one final lesson before she “retires” but this is a lesson like no other. It‘s #TheConfession of many misdeeds, involving many participants and her students are part of the story. Really good!!!!! Highly recommended

Cathythoughts Sounds good .... & scary 👍🏻😱 1w

#SoaringScores Tonight begins ANOTHER Jewish Holiday 🍋🌴🎋

Sukkot commemorates the 40 years that the Jews spent in the desert on their way to the #Homeland and celebrates the way in which God protected them under difficult desert conditions.

“You shall dwell in Sukkot (huts) seven days...in order that future generations may know that I made the Israelite people live in sukkot when I brought them out of the land of Egypt”
Leviticus 23:42 👇🏼

Cinfhen Top left is my sukkah ( temporary hut) the others are from local hotels who seat their guests outdoors for the next 7 days♥️ (edited) 1w

TrishB Gorgeous 😁 what do people do who live in horrible cold and rain!? (I‘m literally thinking here!) 1w
Cinfhen I know @TrishB cold is “non-negotiable” but if it‘s raining you only make a blessing inside the sukkah but u eat your meal indoors 😉 1w
TrishB You could hedge your bets for rain here then in October! 1w
Cinfhen Definitely @TrishB 😂😂😂 1w
CrowCAH Way to tie in the holiday to the theme today! 1w
rohit-sawant So wonderful and vibrant! 1w
Kalalalatja I thought the same @TrishB it has been pouring down all day here 🌧 but your sukkah looks lovely Cindy! 👌 1w
LeahBergen This is so cool! Do you sleep in the sukkah? Or just eat and celebrate? 1w
Cinfhen So the real die-hards DO sleep in the sukkah @LeahBergen but ours is more symbolic than practical 😉we keep to the easy stuff!! Thank you @Kalalalatja @rohit-sawant 😊so nice to hear from you @rohit-sawant what‘s new with you??? I feel like it‘s been months!!!!! 1w
rohit-sawant @Cinfhen It has! Hope you're doing well. I'm due to start a new job at a VFX studio in a few weeks and the in-house training programme has me wrapped up. The commute was brutal months back 'cause of the constant rain and things were generally hectic. They've settled down somewhat now so hoping to carve out more Litsy time! 🙌🏼 1w

Started this book late last night/ it‘s really good!! I love the way Lionel Shriver creates nuanced characters that are completely human in all their faults and fragilities.

All I want to do is read this book but my parents are visiting ( yay) BUT no reading time (boo😩) truthfully, being social is exhausting! Happy Friday, friends 💓

CoffeeAndABook 🙈yep!!!! Enjoy the precious time and do carve out reading nooks - in my experience even 20 minutes helps reduce the symptoms of book withdrawal 💓 2w
Cinfhen You‘re ALL my peeps!!! You totally get me @CoffeeAndABook @erzascarletbookgasm @MicheleinPhilly @TrishB I love mom & dad but it‘s A LOT of togetherness 😜 2w
Librariana Agreed! Being social IS exhausting! But I echo everyone else's sentiments: reading is our thing! We have to carve out time for it 😊 Enjoy your parents and hope y'all have a wonderful visit together! 💖 2w
LeahBergen I feel ya! I have a hugely social weekend coming up, too, as it‘s Canadian Thanksgiving here. 🇨🇦🦃 2w
Centique I really struggle with house guests for more than a night or two as well. Be so lovely if they were readers and wanted a bit of alone time each day! Hope you have some lovely times with them all the same 🥰 2w
Cathythoughts Being social is exhausting! I agree ! Will be lovely to see them too 👍🏻♥️ 2w
Hollie @Centique yes, wouldn‘t it be lovely if houseguests just sat quietly and read in your vicinity during visits? I‘m fortunate that our family lives close enough to never have to spend the night, but I fear when we move we will have to host people for whole weekends and I‘ll be an anxious mess. 2w
Cinfhen I was able to finish my book today @Centique @Cathythoughts @Hollie @Librariana @LeahBergen but only because I hid in the bathroom 🙈🐒I know, I‘m a terrible daughter 🙊but it was SO NICE!!!! 2w

#SoaringScores #ANationOfThieves This book, set in Leningrad during WWII is the story of two boys tasked with procuring a dozen fresh eggs for the Czar‘s chef in order to bake a wedding cake for his daughter‘s upcoming wedding. It‘s a really great read. Clever and well constructed.

Texreader I agree. This is a good book 2w
cathipink You know he's one of the creators of the Game of Thrones tv series too, right? 🙂 2w
CrowCAH Ah, thieves of eggs 🥚! Neato 2w
Cinfhen I am aware @cathipink and I‘m pretty sure fans personally blamed him for the disastrous final season of GOT 🙄 I think he‘s working on a Star Wars script now. He‘s a good writer @Texreader I think City of Thieves would translate well to film @CrowCAH 2w
Mdargusch I have read this and really liked it too! 2w

#SoaringScores Not quite the #LibraryofCongress but a uniquely different and interesting library. This was a total #BlameItOnLitsy read 🤓It was whacky and weird and slightly wonderful. If you want to try something different and a little creepy too, #GoForIt and this is a new cover I haven‘t seen before...thanks Google 😜

KathyWheeler This is still the oddest book I‘ve ever read, but I liked it. 2w

Cinfhen I have a real aversion to the #1001Books @BarbaraBB I can tolerate in small doses the Booker‘s 😜But I think I‘m gonna pass on 🦆and 2w
Cinfhen Have you read Orchestra‘s yet @Kalalalatja ??? 2w
Kalalalatja I have, and I didn‘t like it 🙈 I think some of it might have been timing, but it felt more like a chore than enjoyment 2w

Intimate and powerful. Told through many mediums. This book was lyrical, timely, haunting and incredibly sad. I‘m surprised this didn‘t make The Booker shortlist. It‘s the best I‘ve read from the long-list.

#SoaringScores #TimeBombTown #NetGalley #ARC Book releases October 15, 2019. A timely look at race relations. Told in the past (Los Angeles 1991/1992 ) and the present day. Based loosely around the shooting of Latasha Harlan‘s, an African American shot in the head by a Korean store owner who thought her life was in danger and the ensuing LA Race Riots. This book had wonderful potential but it was too YA in it‘s writing & storytelling for me.

CrowCAH Perfect timing ⏰ 2w

Good God! This is a heartbreaking listen 🎧A young mother/wife facing a terminal cancer diagnosis. Born blind to a poor farming family in Vietnam, Julie Yip beats her odds and graduates from Harvard Law School. Now at age 37 she‘s told she has Stage 4 colon cancer. And yet, she has this fighting spirit 💪🏽

TrishB Not for me!! 2w
GlassAsDiamonds Sounds like quite a legacy but... not for me either (lost a good friend at that age to colon cancer that had been misdiagnosed as simply “morning sickness” & was found 6 weeks after her son was born). 2w

GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen thanks, she was a lovely person. A couple of years ago, I‘d have probably read this but I think I‘ll give it a miss. For me... GOTTA stop moping but working on it! 😊 Probably looking at a 16 week recovery but i can finally do exercise (from the waist down) again which is nice because I was going stir crazy with the “sit still and don‘t sweat” stuff!!! 2w
Cinfhen I have a real sensitivity for those dealing with arm/hand injuries😔 @GlassAsDiamonds hope recovery is smooth 2w

GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen any tips? It‘s driving me crazy! (How did/is his recovery going? All good now or was it long as well?) 2w
Mdargusch Wow! So heartbreaking. ☹️ 2w
Cinfhen @GlassAsDiamonds It was longer than he wanted & he had a few setbacks along the way, but Thank God he has full use of his hand & nerve feeling is almost fully recovered. Give it time. Whenever my son tried to push it to soon, it ended up costing him more time. Sending 💓💓💓💓💓 2w

#SoaringScores #CoverBuy #CoverCrush When Beatriz Hanlon agrees to accompany her missionary husband Max to a remote island in the South Pacific she knew there would be challenges. I‘m meant to be on a #BookBuyingBan until December 1 BUT this is a book I started from the library and didn‘t have time to finish PLUS it‘s really a bday gift for a special Litten 🎁💝So if your name starts with a T and ends with an H and you live in Liverpool don‘t buy this book 😜and I hope you‘re cool with me reading the last 150 pages 😘

Atmospheric and creepy. Is the house really haunted or is it the house guests who are haunted??? I‘m meant to come up with bookclub questions so if u have any discussion ideas please post them below 👻 Im torn between a pick & so-so.

Reviewsbylola This was a bit lackluster for me but I heard this is better and so I‘m waiting on the copy I ordered. 2w
Lcsmcat I‘m just finished with the clean up from book club. The group was divided on this one. Some found it really scary. 🙋🏻‍♀️ And some said it was boring because “nothing actually happened.” I‘m guessing they were expecting gore? 2w
Lcsmcat An interesting idea that a couple of people had was that the Dudley‘s were somehow behind the things that happened. They argued that things always happened when they were “gone.” I‘m not convinced, but it‘s an interesting theory. 2w
Lcsmcat They also thought Shirley Jackson‘s author photo was creepy. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

Cinfhen Have you seen the Netflix series @Lola I‘m told it‘s SUPER CREEPY!! I think I might watch soon @BookishJess I thought the book was ok @GypsyKat I wanted just a little bit more🤷🏼‍♀️ 2w
Lola @Cinfhen I‘m not really down for a series on this. Too much of a time commitment and it‘s really just “inspired” by the book. I‘d rather do a one and done movie and I read that the 1963 version is the way to go on that. And to stay away from the 1999. 2w
Cinfhen I‘m not much of a binge watcher either @Lola so maybe I‘ll wait to see what you think of the 1963 film 🎞 2w
Lola @Cinfhen 👍🏻I just started her memoir and the house is very much a character in the book. Great follow up to THoHH 2w

Wow, did I fly through this book. I listened to this powerful report well into the night and most of the day in utter disbelief. I don‘t have the proper words to convey the incomprehensible bigotry and racist behavior that still runs rampant today. My heart broke for the injustices perpetuated against children, the poor & the intellectually challenged. Our legal system is deeply flawed. Thank God for EJI and other justice organizations 😇

Jas16 I am so glad you liked this as much as I did. 3w
MicheleinPhilly This book literally changed me. I used to be in favor of the death penalty but am now vehemently opposed to it. It can sometimes be hard because I tend to lean towards vengeance for the worst among us. But for every admitted child molester/rapist/murderer on death row, there are too many (mostly black or brown) men who are not guilty of anything. Further reading rec.: 3w
Cinfhen @MicheleinPhilly I own and plan to read the book you tagged. Especially now since Bryan Stevenson referenced the case in his epilogue. And I absolutely agree about capital punishment/ this book has changed my views 💯 3w
Rachel_nyc This book affected me deeply as well. What an amazing human being Bryan Stevenson is. The recent documentary on HBO (I think?) on him is worth a watch also. (edited) 3w
