I read more than I thought I would this week - surprisingly my re-read of American Baby for upcoming bookclub, ended up being my favorite book of the week. The rest were just ok.

What the F did I just read?? Love the cover, but I am so confused!! I was hoping for a character like Gil in her recent novel Dinosaurs, but while I appreciate the arc she wrote for T, I‘m left with many questions. This is the start of a trilogy, and hoopla has this and book three. I‘m torn about whether to buy book two. Her books have a degree of opacity to me, which sometimes I find delightful and other times frustrating. Low pick.
Third times a charm 🥰 I will admit the old time Philadelphia Jewish angle REALLY kept me hooked. McBride humorously and heartily writes about a Jewish owned grocery store that caters to the black community in Pottstown, Pa. Definitely had Deacon King Kong vibes, with a cast of quirky and zany characters full of wisdom & mirth. The plot is pretty convoluted and McBride tends to overwrite but there‘s a satisfying story if you stick with it.
Tonight begins the holiest day of the Jewish year - Yom Kippur and Friday is another Jewish holiday- Sukkot. So I‘m keeping my forecast light. For all who celebrate YK may you be inscribed in the Book of Life and find all your prayers and hopes answered. Peace and love to all✌🏽☮️🕊️🩷
Struggling to write this review - I liked it but something was off… It‘s an interesting premise for a novel - taking one of the most notorious serial killers in history, refusing to name him yet spin a story from the perspective of one of the sorority women who was in the house the night he murdered raped and strangled two young women and violently assaulted two other sorority sisters. There‘s a secondary story about another victim 👇🏼
One of my most anticipated books of the year dropped this morning, and I am already loving it! Plus I could (and will) listen to Ari Fliakos narrate all day!! 🤩🤩

Two girls are raised liked sisters as their fathers are both part of the tightly knit “family” ( Italian mafia)
Super predictable and very lackluster- not a pan but totally a book that can be skipped 👎🏼
I have trouble settling into Whitehead‘s particular style of writing. I‘ve struggled a bit with every one I‘ve tried, but I ended up enjoying Harlem Shuffle, and I like this sequel just as much. He once again follows crooked furniture dealer Ray Carney through three novellas. First he gets back involved with a crooked cop for Jackson 5 tickets. A few years later he‘s at work on a blaxploitation film. The last one has him investigating an arson.
This was a disappointment mostly because I didn‘t realize a lot of it was couched in a modern-day romantic fairytale. I‘m not a fan of them, and there was no excitement or insight around the sibling relationships for me.
Tara is getting out of state prison on a drug trafficking charge. She receives a rough welcome home from her siblings and finds a lot has changed in her absence. Meanwhile the cop who arrested her is being awfully nice to her.
