“What happens when the walls we raise outlive the dangers they were built to keep out? At what point does a fort become a cage?“

I really enjoyed this story. It's kind of a Baba Yaga origin story, as discovered by her descendants after they inherit her infamous cabin on chicken feet. I personally connected with the historic theme of displaced jews in Russia. It really added depth and humanity to the Yaga history.
5 ⭐️

Read-y_Picker Finished it off with some traditional lore. It was interesting seeing the themes and events repeated throughout many variations of Baba Yaga stories. Definitely going down the rabbit hole this month. 3mo

My February #Bookspinbingo Wrap-up is serving 80's vibes 💖!
I did mainly impulse reading this month but finally completed Cloud Cuckoo Land (3rd time's the charm). Sadly having a really tough time getting into Angels of Music, even though it's so creative and fun, I keep getting tossed down rabbit holes looking up all of Kim's characters and art references.

@mitch I wanted to join in on the fun too so I listened to the audio of February's #goldenagecrimeclub. Sayers was a new-to-me author and I quite enjoyed this though I found it a bit confusing and might have done better to read it. It also felt like a good 20% of the book was the murdered explaining how he would have gotten away with it if it weren't for that meddling Lord Wimsey and co lol. But still good 3.75⭐️

Went into this totally blind, solely based on the hype and it did not disappoint. Not my usual genre... while there is an underlying element of mystery to it, this story is pure drama. In fact it's dripping with so much drama and glamour and secrecy that I almost forgot the big question that had been hanging in the background. I listened to the audiobook and it was a spectacular production, just brought everything to life! Highly recommend. #AAM

Ever start reading a book and it's loaded with so many hot words, popular themes that it feels like it was written by AI? Admittedly it had me laughing quite a bit at times as it‘s full of sarcasm, cursing and cheap pot shots. What can I say, I'm a girl of simple tastes lol. But seriously, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that no actual humans were involved in writing this.
Book #13 3.5⭐️ Soft pick. Don't know if I'll read the next.

Read-y_Picker Seriously. Anyone who's read this book... As I was nearing the end I was wondering how one could get AI to write a sequel in a series after wrapping up a first story. Then I wondered if the series was written as one looooooooong story and then just cut up and maybe adjusted a bit for polishing. And THEN this book had no ending! NONE AT ALL! I think I rest my case. 4mo
Clwojick Okay but your review has me SO intrigued, and now I have to read it! Reminds me of the Hallmark Christmas movie script written by an AI.🤣 4mo

The Book of M: A Novel | Peng Shepherd
post image

Now THIS is a well done dystopian. Mysterious, adventurous, magical. Things are happening. No one understands why but people have lost their shadows and with them their memories. This novel is loaded with action, emotion as the characters try to navigate the new landscape in the hope that there is a cure out there. All they have are snippets of gossip to keep them going amidst the fear that they could become shadowless at any point ⬇️

Read-y_Picker forgetting their loved ones, their place in the world, their destination. Will they find their missing families? Will they follow the rumours to New Orleans? Will they end up reduced to a pile of detritus, memorabilia abandoned en route when they have forgotten even the importance of the relics they carried for so long?

This was a great listen. Read by the author, it explores the history of his own book lust, his time working in and frequenting various bookshops in the Bay Area. He packs in a ton of history about book selling, book binding, early writing to publishing, libraries, renowned sellers and the future of reading and books themselves. I particularly enjoyed that with later releases he includes (2 in this edition) updates on the state of the trade. 4⭐️

New to me author. I looked up Erdrich as part of #AAM and it was really difficult to select a couple from her vest catalogue. It was pretty difficult getting back into reading reality after so long in fantasy land but I really enjoyed the tagged book.

Told from the POV of several people, the author explores the bonds between strangers and family in a small community in North Dakota over several generations. There‘s a LOT packed in here!

Not the best. Seen this one making the rounds a bit lately and the premise sounded cute so I figured why not? The best part about it was that I actually co pelted a book in French! I found it just too jr. and how can it be that under 200 pages it still felt like there was a lot of filler… 3.25 ⭐️
