ALMOST done with this whole moving caper. Perhaps THE most irritating portion of the movers just chucking things from god knows where into god knows what box was that they did it with books as well. Books from the office ended up with cook books which ended up with random fiction etc 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ We couldn‘t find anything so we didn‘t know if everything had turned up 😭 On a public holiday Monday, we piled everything by genre & SORTED!

LiteraryinLititz Good luck getting everything where you want it! Glad the ordeal is almost over. 4d

Litsy is probably the only place this will truly be understood but somehow, the dust jacket for my copy of the titled did not manage to make it from Mumbai to Singapore 😭😭😭😭. Still - review. This is my Related to a Podcast read for #BookedWinter a tad late. Unfortunately because I‘m a fan of the #podcast, there wasn‘t a lot of new material here and it felt a little repetitive but it‘s still a pick and recommended for habit change.

I love old pulp fiction - where else can you get such a genteel death threat?? 😂

The original was published in French in 1867 & was a huge hit. It‘s got a roguish privateer, man eating tigress, Indian uprising (the original French author is vitriolicly anti-English) & copious footnotes by Sam Miller the modern translator so no context is lost.

As per all 18th C books, some modern sensibilities will be offended but I still love them! 😊

Dini was abandoned the first time during Mumbai monsoon and he‘s terrified of storms, poor little guy. Life would be easier if the apartment was safe for kitties but it‘s not so he‘s ensconced with his stuff in the bathroom (Puffs in the en-suite). A storm just kicked up & he went *nuts* so....it‘s 2am and I‘m building forts for a cat out of a plane carrier, blankets and a floor mat. Non-stop glamour here in Casa De Diamond...🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

squirrelbrain Poor Dini 😿 He‘ll be so happy you‘re there to look after him though... at least he‘s not on his own 😽 2w

Things could not be said to be going well... Supervisor was a bit of a brutal ass & said the team would work when we asked if they wanted to take a bereavement day. We said to the guys directly, “take the time you need”. Turned out, the funeral was this afternoon and they wanted to go which of course we weren‘t going to object but it meant the move became this... 🤦🏻‍♀️. I think it is almost worse than boxes. Maybe? Gonna be a LONG week. 😭

LiteraryinLititz Just went back to see what you were referring to. Wow, I'm so sorry that happened. Sounds awful for all involved. 2w
Kaye Moving can be stressful. Hang in there. It‘ll get done. 2w
GlassAsDiamonds @LiteraryinLititz Thanks, it‘s been a *weird* saga. I want to be my best compassionate self but we also need catalogue the damages, get everything sorted out since the Mumbai team stuff things in RANDOM places and in their haste to get out, the Singapore teak dumped it all over the place and I need to get it all put away... 2w
GlassAsDiamonds @Kaye thanks! That‘s going to be my mantra for the week. It‘s got to get done and the fairies are not going to do it for me!!! 2w

Things didn‘t *quite* go as hoped or planned with the move. There were the usual expected problems of damaged boxes, broken furniture and sloppiness of the Mumbai team but the Singapore guys were being just lovely. Heartbreakingly one of them had a heart attack while out on his afternoon drinks break and passed away during the night. Not at how we hoped things would turn out. 💔 Hug your loved ones close today.

GlassAsDiamonds @tjwill thanks, need those 😔 @Librarybelle @JoScho @BookishMarginalia @cherinium - thank you. Such a awful thing and so weird and awkward here today. GlassAsDiamonds @Swe_Eva yeah, it‘s really awful. He was just lovely and seemed super strong and super fit. His colleagues are all here now and it‘s just so strange. 3w

Certainly the most somber of the four, this one is a quiet examination of fear and the insidiousness and silence of the fear of governmental oversight and retaliation even if it doesn‘t actually come. I found fascinating parallels to the experience of living with China‘s “Social Credit” system and next door to hardline Hindutuva nutcases in India so I suppose it, more than anything, shows just how much fear is a truly universal shared experience.

Pick but this isn‘t even a novella, it‘s ten short talking points for Arts funding in modern societies. The third in the series of 4 “Rational Conversations” They‘re well enunciated and thought provoking points thay would be useful for anyone trying to argue for funding for any artistic endeavour but it really is more a social media length manifesto than book (and I lost my kitty to a far more interesting rain storm out the window 😂😂😂)

😻well, this is going well....😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂 The book is part of a series of “Rational Conversations with prominent Singaporeans” But I found it disjointed & poorly sequenced. Some of the ideas and concepts are fantastic but it‘s the transcript of a speech and has the feel of something from a very smart author who didn‘t quite take the time to order their thoughts. Pick because the concepts of a non-binary new world order but only just. #CatsOfLitsy

I decided against that 21 day gratitude thing doing the rounds because I think I‘d be simply too obnoxious: the shift from Mumbai to Singapore has been an amazing, brutal, entrancing, seismic shift of reality. I‘m having coffee & watching clean rain fall after almost bursting into tears in a supermarket at the fact or its mere exuberant, choice laden existence. The air isn‘t toxic. I can brush my teeth with the tap water. It‘s raining in March...

Spent the last few days in huge fights to try & get real estate agents to do things like spell my name correctly on our lease, which they‘re refusing to do. I also have no idea where most of my stuff is (somewhere in India, the movers are delaying 😭😡😭) but we did the “scouting” trip to move the kitties and I will confess that much of that luggage was books! First Singapore book! I flew through this one. Tight pacing, extremely well researched, written and edited, almost certainly as a result of the author‘s investigative journalism background and the matter‘s tempering in the fires of a desperate Theranos, Bad Blood is a compelling read. It‘s also heartening just how many people stood their ground either by resigning or against legal onslaught to do the right thing. The epilogue hangs a little but ⬇️

GlassAsDiamonds that‘s probably to be expected given the various cases that are currently before the courts. Highly recommended especially to anyone with an interest in modern business, corporate non-fiction, corporate governance, Silicon Valley, financial shenanigans or business non-fiction. 2mo

The author is collating how far this book, a spectacularly written and heart wrenching account of the process of and eventual loss of her child to an exceeding rare degenerative disease, has travelled. This was mine at The Gateway of India, the only photo I thought appropriate given her daughter‘s name was India. @Cinfhen ... maybe a non-fiction read? Today...honestly I wouldn‘t believe me if I was telling it. Got all these documents annotated & ordered (they‘re ALL to export the cats). Government confirms appointment for tomorrow. Get down to vet to get all these signed & she‘s not in, not even in Mumbai (no notice). Someone says it‘s a public holiday but only for some (elective religious holiday). Call agents. Government guy ONLY works Mon & Tues & won‘t move appointment (flight‘s Sunday).⬇️

GlassAsDiamonds Vet‘s vocally not of religion to which today‘s feast belongs BTW. Agents madly phone around, find a vet who will certify BUT, I need both cats because she‘s never met them. Get home (2hrs in car at this point). Get cats. Go to vet, it‘s horrible. Cats both examined, documents signed BUT she doesn‘t have her stamp so then they need to find the guy who can stamp. Vet stamp not enough, need PRACTICE stamp too 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. Find practice ⬇️ 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds Stamp, stamp all pages. Agent then has melt down that part of practice stamp now impinges slightly on area government official needs to write their name. DEMAND changes. Document has to be emailed to vet, printed resigned and restamped x 2. New chair (I‘m SO in ♥️)! Anyway - focusing. This book! It‘s an amazing, well informed, blistering critique of not so much “science” gone wrong as scientists gone wrong or science done wrong. It‘s a mind boggling and not a little disturbing critique of seven things that didn‘t quite work out the way we‘d have hoped. As an aside, the life expectancy in one of the Mumbai suburbs I can see from my apartment window is 39. Combination of societal disenfranchisement of slum dwellers, pollution, polio and mosquito borne disease.

Sound familiar? Horrifyingly, this is a chapter on Eugenics in the 1920‘s and the man who saved the Bison, saved the California redwoods and kickstarted the US National Parks movement, the “the single most effective conservationists in America”, Maddison Grant. He also happens to have been an ardent proponent of the eugenics movement and wrote the treatise that would become the backbone for justifications of the Holocaust.

GlassAsDiamonds @Puredragonstar in the middle! He‘s moving with us to a Singapore (we‘re currently based in Mumbai) where we are hoping he and our other cat will get along. If it doesn‘t work out, we‘ll find him a new home. (But cross everything that we can work it all out!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻) 3mo
Puredragonstar Oh man! Beautiful, I really hope it works out. That guy needs to find his home. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Puredragonstar he does!! We‘re hoping it‘s us but if not, we WILL find it! 3mo

The quote is “More than three billion people alive today - and billions more in the future - owe their existence to Fritz Herber and Carl Bosch” [who developed the process to remove nitrogen from air for its use in chemical fertilizers] and Puff‘s my stand in. I haven‘t been so blindsided by a book in a long time. Herber, who won a Nobel Prize for this process in 1919 also developed the gas chemical weapons of WWI and what would become Zyklon B.

Pickpick

My usual background blue chair is being reupholstered so I‘ve gone green!

Many many thanks to @Cinfhen and @Megabooks for prodding to me read this one, it was thoroughly worth falling behind my #Booked2019 list! Part narrative history, part archeology, part study of humanity, part epidemiology and part examination of Old World hubris, The Lost City of the Monkey God is an engrossing, wild ride that I highly recommend.

Cinfhen The green compliments the book cover! Great review 🙌🏻so glad you joined our little buddy-read😁 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen thanks for prodding me into it!!! So glad I finished that one before it spends time in a shopping container, SUCH a good book!! 😂😂😂 Reminded me a little of a book on Theodore Roosevelt‘s exploration of the Brazilian Rio Roosevelt/ Rio Teodoro which was also excellent. 😊 (My Booked Winter pile is however, now a tad dire !!! 😂😂😂😂) 3mo
Cinfhen It‘s a year long challenge so no worries!!! And Im sure this book fulfills some prompt somewhere 😜 3mo

Cinfhen That Roosevelt book sounds great!! Have you read this book 3mo
Cinfhen I really liked it a lot!!!!! 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen ooohhh! It sound brilliant (my TBR is toast! 😂😂😂😂 Actually no! I shall stay strong and add it to the “books to buy in Singapore “, which you‘d better believe exists, especially if I read through the suitcase of my Booked books before the shipment arrives 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂). But I have stacked it! 3mo
Megabooks Ooo! I‘ve always found Teddy fascinating! I‘m almost done. I finished Parkland in the car instead, but I‘m on cd 7/10 on the audiobook! We‘ll finish it in the car tomorrow. It‘s been so much fun having you and @Cinfhen on this Central American journey! 3mo
Cinfhen Yes!! Nobody else I‘d rather #MonkeyAround with 🙊🙈🙈🙊 @Megabooks @GlassAsDiamonds you guys are 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen totally true! 😂😂😂😂😂😜😜😜😜 3mo

😂😂😂 When it‘s not terrifying, this book about seven scientific “advancements” that have actually impeded human health and progress, is quite hysterical.

Weaponxgirl I am one of those people that forgot everything after my last test too 😂👏 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Weaponxgirl me too!!! (Although it‘s been a while since my last closed book test!! 😂😂😂). 3mo
Weaponxgirl @GlassAsDiamonds school, which was so long ago I really know nothing now 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Weaponxgirl 😂😂😂😂 ( a friends toddlers - THE toddlers - are in their dinosaur phase and I keep thinking “I knew all these at one point”!!!). 3mo

Mind bogging. An estimated 90% of the local populations died of disease....

I‘m going to make the next anti-vaxer I meet read this chapter (& if you‘re indeed anti vaccine, I challenge you to spend a month working with polio survivors in subcontinental India where the disease still claims lives, then get back to me). Less facetiously, I‘d read something similar on disease effects on Indigenous populations in North America but it‘s still staggering each time.

Bookcation74 I highlighted this portion too, for the same reason! 3mo
CarolynM Preach🙌 The Indigenous population of Australia too. 3mo
Cinfhen I too, was stunned. 3mo

Weaponxgirl This book talks about it in a great way too. I want any anti Vaxer to read it and still tell me it‘s healthier at the end 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM I was wondering about that actually - has anyone (surely someone had?) done an epidemiological study on the effects of Old World diseases on Australia‘s indigenous populations? I‘d guess it would be similar but maybe not because of our proximity to Indonesia? 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen The tagged also touches on the effect of epidemics in North America, noting mounds of cities that are very little excavated and the fallacy of the majority of Indigenous peoples being mainly nomadic tribes.... those just happened to be the people who survived the longest. 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Weaponxgirl I have a sneaking suspicion you may also enjoy my current impulse buy 3mo
Weaponxgirl @GlassAsDiamonds I have that on my tbr! 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Weaponxgirl I‘m reading it now and.... wow. Humanity... 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3mo
Weaponxgirl @GlassAsDiamonds we are....unique? 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Weaponxgirl we‘re such short memoried MORONS!!! (Having passed the “he helped 3 billion people live but invented some of the worst chemical weapons ever used without conscience or mercy” chapter, I‘m now on the Eugenics chapter which reads like certain political tweets only we know that these led to mass sterilisation and ultimately the Holocaust..... 🤯🤯🤯) (edited) 3mo
Weaponxgirl @GlassAsDiamonds eugenics is terrifying! 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Weaponxgirl I tell you what, on one hand, this book is a fast read. On the other, it is so clinically horrifying that I‘m having to stop after certain chapters to decompress. The banality of evil is an apt description for so many of these. 3mo
trigeekgirl And this is why I research and get every potentially useful immunization before I travel. It is also the reason I am on my second yellow vaccination record book. 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @trigeekgirl smart!!!!! As an aside, have you had the rabies vaccine? Many people say not to get it because you need shots once bitten but if you‘ve had the first ones, you only need days 0,3 and 7 of the course which is MUCH easier when travelling than having to stick around for 28 days for the full five injections. 3mo
trigeekgirl @GlassAsDiamonds Weirdly, yes, but not due to travelling. I was bitten by a feral kitten once. Doctors get quite twitchy about that. :) 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @trigeekgirl 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂 That‘ll do it!!! (Mine was an unvaccinated stray Labrador 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️) 3mo

Great idea... head off into a tropical jungle without antivenin... 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Clearly the author survived but apparently by a miracle... @Megabooks how‘s your read going? ( @Cinfhen .... those spoiler tags are calling me 😜😜😜😜).

Cinfhen Don‘t peek 🙈 3mo
Megabooks I‘m a little bit further than you, but not much. My kindle says 37%. I remember thinking that was pretty stupid as well. 😬 Hope you and the toddlers all survived with limbs intact! 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen - just got to the “hey look, more deadly diseases I didn‘t know about in India” portion.... HOW have I never heard of this disease before????? 3mo
Cinfhen Right??? It‘s terrifying 3mo

18 meals prepped! The “interesting” portion of an international move: using up everything you can‘t take with you before the “CHUCK EVERYTHING” panic sets in or time runs out. Tonight: Spaghetti bolognese and a chicken & bacon soup with white beans! (We can‘t ship any foodstuffs & you can‘t ship open things anyway so all the food in our pantry/ fridge/ freezer as well as all the condiments, staples & as many spices as possible need to be used.)

Cinfhen When‘s the move out date!?!?!?! 3mo
Cinfhen How did it go with your toddler watch??? 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen good lord, toddlers!!!!!!! Between the lead pencil attempted murder, the toothpaste, the nasal spray, the green moustache drawn on with GOD KNOWS WHAT INDELIBLE MARKER (still on Mr 3.5), the “trying to use chopsticks as a grappling hook to climb a bar cabinet then snapping them in half”.... Sunday was spent in silent contemplation of white walls 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I am *not* cut out for toddlers!!!!!! (But they ARE both still alive!) (edited) 3mo

GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen Cats: 10th March. Stuff: 15-20th March (in China, it took 6hrs from start to driving off in the truck including their lunch break. I‘ve added a mattress and two books cases and now the Indians claim it will take four days to pack and another to load and if we pack anything ourselves, we void the insurance cover 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️). Humans: 24th March (toddlers and family: 3rd March). In short; MARCH!! 3mo
SleepyDragon I have been following your posts here, and I gotta say, the antics of these two are extreme even for toddlers. I have 3.5 yr old twins, and your posts have made me realize that life could be a whole lot worse. Your toddlers seem extremely ... shall we say ... spirited! Oh my goodness. 3mo

Going to the Vet | Wiley Blevins
post image

Hanging in the car while waiting for the vet. Because they‘re coming from India, the kitties will need to go into quarantine in Singapore. Just because why not, Puff‘s rabies vaccine expires within two days of her quarantine ending, if there‘s not an issue with either quarantine or us finding accomodation. To forestall any problems, she‘s having the next one now but it needed to be exactly today so we didn‘t confuse the official paperwork. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Libby1 Good luck! You did a great time catching your cat‘s reflection in the rear view window! 😻 3mo
Cinfhen Always something!! 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen tell me about it 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ At the moment, I‘m just trying to get them out of the country and safely into quarantine... the chaos thereafter is barely a blip on the radar! (Actually I‘ve probably past caring for most of the the rest which isn‘t ideal!) 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Libby1 thanks!!!! She‘s was transfixed by a Labrador! 😊😊😊😊 3mo

It‘s quiet. And then there are screams of “ARE YOU EATING TOOTHPASTE?!?!” (Answer: Yes).

Me, learning from this the next time it‘s quiet: ahhh, what‘s he doing in those curtains? (Answer: spraying a medicated nasal spray on the windows).

I am *not* cut out for toddlers. Also; it‘s really quite hard to get dried toothpaste out of eyelashes without wetting it/ running the risk of getting toothpaste in a toddler eye.

AlaMich Oh my! 😆 I don‘t have kids but I am told that toddlers being quiet is dangerous.... 3mo
Nebklvr Oh dear. Good luck! 3mo
CarolynM This is why parents of toddlers "toddler-proof" their houses - it goes some way to limit the potential for damage (to the toddler or the house)??? 3mo
See All 8 Comments
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM we had to do some of that for our latest rescue cat (think child locks on doors he can open & those finger smoosh preventers for the doors he can close 🤦🏻‍♀️) but omg. These kids climbed, they opened drawers without handles, they jammed chopsticks into the gaps in a cabinet and tried to use them as a ladder (chopsticks snapped).... just... 😧😧😧😧 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @AlaMich I know! I parent cats for a reason!!!!! 😱😱😱😱😱😱 (someone said parenting toddlers is like trying to keep a drunk suicidal friend alive and I think truer words were never spoken!!!!!). 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Nebklvr thanks!! Needed it!!!!!! 3mo
CarolynM OMG, Climbers - the scariest kind of toddlers 😱😱😱 I thank God every day I didn't have those. 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM these are the climbing/ running/ scribbling/ screaming/ fussy/ energiser bunny/ *SMART* type. Boggles the mind, it really does. 🤦🏻‍♀️😱🤦🏻‍♀️😱 3mo

Me: it‘s okay (parents need to take important phone call with moving company), I‘ll keep them alive.

I swear to god, 17 seconds later, Mr 2.5 was actively trying to stab Mr.3.5, who was in the box, with a lead pencil (note the stab marks above) 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️.

I am not cut out for toddlers.

ItsAngel 😂😂😂😂 I swear, toddlers are the worst!! I have a 2 and 4 year old (not really a toddler)...they are sweet one minute and the next are trying to main one another. 3mo
OrangeMooseReads Toddlers are not for the weak or faint of heart lol (edited) 3mo
readinginthedark Oh my gosh, yes! The worst part is that half the time they don't know they've done anything wrong, and the other half they know but play innocent! 🙈 3mo
