The Babysitters Coven | Kate M. Williams

Loved it. 😊 It‘s very much the first book in a series & probably will resonate most with people who read Babysitters Club books then watched Buffy (so maybe it‘s a YA book mostly likely to be a hit with readers who grew up in the 90‘s 🤔) but it‘s light, funny, fast paced & poignant all at the same time. The editing is tight & the writing is elegantly well tuned. Teenagers might miss a lot of the pop culture but I suspect they‘d enjoy it as is.

The completion of a story arc & the series, this is a much stronger offering than the last two books but it was not for me. The author has moments of amazing lyricism but she‘s also inclined to broody hyperbolic angst & florid flights of language fancy, neither of which work for me. The story also messes with historical timelines, slips between 2019 vernacular & that of the late 1800‘s & uses a thoroughly implausible mcguffin ⬇️

GlassAsDiamonds to force the action along which irritated me. I suspect if you were a teenage girl with a love for gothic melodrama, neither of which I am, the style might appeal and there are some strong, memorable quotes but having finished the series, I‘m highly unlikely to read from this author again. Oh good lord... 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Literally about to run off alone into the night to confront a stalking murderer in attire that prompted pages worth of angst two books ago and would have seen her thrown out of any actually respectable hotel if not arrested (trousers but in 1889) 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Seems we‘re giving over continuity and historical accuracy to become a bad gothic melodrama. If only she‘d burned a note and worn a silk nightgown...🤦🏻‍♀️

Spoilers blanked out but this sort of deviation into florid flights of fancy is what‘s really turning me off this series. I‘d potentially understand it if it was a penny dreadful or a tropey romance but it‘s not. It‘s a decent book with a few glaring and frustrating historian errors but these hysterics are not even remotely my cup of tea.

Okay... so, a tad light on for details but that‘s because I only got clearance from my surgeon to do anything more than “sit still and don‘t sweat” this morning....which is great because I‘m going stir crazy but so limited it‘s driving me insane already (I can walk, that‘s it but... let‘s do this thing). Still, let‘s see if I can become at least a walker who takes all her vitamins!!!

ShelfRighteous Kudos to you for participating! I think the goal should be to be better tomorrow than we are today. Sending all my support to you💪🏼 1w
wanderinglynn Great goals! 🙌🏻 And the great thing about #BFC is you can adapt your goals as needed. One day, one step at a time. 💜 1w
thegreensofa Love it! :). I‘m a pretend walker myself who takes all her Vitamins. I say pretend because I get all my walking done incidentally at work. But I do take B12 and D every single day (thanks to Dr Greger whose book I am reading as my first for this challenge!). You got this! We can do it! 👏🏻🧡 1w

Escaping From Houdini | Kerri Maniscalco
post image
Mehso-so

Oh thank goodness that‘s over....! While the imagery is stunning, it cries out for brutal editing because the language is florid and overblown. Audrey Rose, a character with promise in the first book, spends most of her time whining about decency, romantic indecision or (*gasp*) desire, an unfortunate fall for a previously interesting character. Once again, actions do not match character ages & seem shoehorned down to make the book YA. 😭🤦🏻‍♀️😭

Here is another Houdini (from whom I wouldn‘t want to escape)! Honestly, this book is perilously close to a DNF but for the fact a friend bought me the last book in the series and I promised I‘d read it 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Audrey Rose, an interesting character in the first book, becomes a ranty, annoying Puritan in this one. One more gasping line about indecency or debauchery and I swear I won‘t be able to be held responsible for my actions

Anyone who has read this one... I‘m struggling! Half a chapter before, Character X desperately wanted to learn something (stupid). Now she‘s being offered the chance but she‘s turning it down apparently because it was offered...🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ This series has a RAVENOUS fandom while I‘m sitting here with two expensive hardbacks and stupid characters I‘m really starting to loathe... OPINIONS PLEASE LISTY!

CarolynM I don't think I understand what the author is trying to make these characters say. Maybe I need more context, or maybe it's just pretentious twaddle🙂 2w
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM nope - pretentious twaddle 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I feel like the author could have been BRILLIANT with a brutal editor and a slap to the back of the head: “FLORID IS BAD, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IS GOOD” .... the texts is the middle of an outraged rant by Character Y that Character X has offered Character Y something they wanted half a chapter before but HOW COULD THEY, THE UPSTART... 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 2w

Weird book!! This is my #genrebusting for #Booked2019 #Summer and oh my, did it bust!! 😂😂😂

Part Detective Noir, part comedy farce, part crime drama, this book is weird but somehow manages to get into the action so fast you end up on the ride without noticing just how weird it is 😂. It‘s not going to be for everyone: Cantero likes classic rich noir level language mixed with his crazy but if you‘re after something different, try this!

I can‘t bring myself to remove the Mylar so please excuse my shiny photo but this book (which arrived yesterday 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂) was a delight. Mayan mythology blended with magical realism and a coming into the self quest; Gods of Jade and Shadow is a well written, well edited and well researched joy to read. It avoids the usual cliches of Death and the Maiden and pastiches of death to bring some originality to the trope. Recommended with gusto.

GlassAsDiamonds @LibrarianRyan Kinokuniya Singapore - their flagship store. What I found especially odd was that they hadn‘t tagged the first book in the series, only the second. It is possible it‘s because of NPH, homosexual sex is still technically illegal in Singapore but I was hoping not. 2mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks seems like that‘s more and more likely 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ (well, him or maybe one of the characters?). 2mo
GlassAsDiamonds @LibrarianRyan yeah. I was hoping there was something in it to warrant the label (mysticism or *something* but it‘s sounding less and less like that‘s likely to be so 🤦🏻‍♀️😭).Is there an LGBTQA+ character? (edited) 2mo
CarolynM @Megabooks That was the first thing I thought too. Bet they don't stock Armistead Maupin or Alan Hollinghurst at all, @GlassAsDiamonds 🙄 2mo
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM now I‘m going to need to look ... 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂 At least they do stock these I suppose but sheesh. They do NOT stock the William Gibson anthology that includes the Wired article that got Gibson and Wired banned from publication here in the 90‘s but I did rather think sexual preference of an author rather beyond needing a parental warning... even here. 2mo

Just. Woah. Kierkegaard is a swirling mass of contradiction. He writes nature and the joy of the natural world beautifully and easily hold his own with the contemporary he‘s often compared to, Thoreau but he‘s also a “Faith is unconditional obedience”/ God *fearing* (emphasis on fear) fundamentalist Christian, a theology that‘s not mine and doesn‘t appeal. He also hangs the basis of his hard core theology on the placement of single words in the ⬇️

GlassAsDiamonds New Testament (“first”) in these discourses but he‘s writing in Danish in relation to a Bible most likely in Latin, that was itself a translation from Ancient Greek of the written account of a speech most likely delivered in Aramaic (the Sermon on the Mount) AND he wants the placement of these words to drive his version of highly fundamentalist Christian living. Rely on Google Translate *once* to know how nuts that is so... weird book but poetic. 2mo

Kierkegaard does my head in. We‘ve flipped from a half a discourse on the need for absolute and unconditional obedience to God, replete with hiding from the Devil and quivering in fear at the awful patience of God, to exulting in the joy of a chorus of singing birds. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ His expression of the glory of the natural world would be a joy to read ... if only he wasn‘t quite so permanently terrified for the state of his immortal soul.

Stress reading RANDOM Amazon finds .... Not a bad book all things considered. Brilliant escapism and a very skilful blend of what seems to be well researched Native American and Celtic mythology. A very silly book from a time people earnestly believed animals didn‘t have souls. Sitting on the floor of a vet hospital ward with Puff while the lovely Muslim guy from yesterday visits his VERY TALKATIVE KITTY - this paragraph is total BS, as is his “blissful ignorance” argument. One wonders how humanity progressed when you read this.

Yep, arguing w. a towering bastion of intellectual argument who...was a deluded & ignorant. Room kitty agrees.

Still plugging on with Kierkegaard .... on reading this, I‘m convinced he‘d never once actually met a child who wasn‘t terrified of him. He‘s got quite a lyric turn of phrase when he wants, especially when he‘s invoking nature but he‘s also a die hard fundamentalist (Calvin?) & we don‘t share a theology so. A distracting intellectual pursuit (Puffs responding to treatment which is AMAZING AND NEEDS TO CONTINUE!)

Megabooks @GlassAsDiamonds I was in small animal private practice, but my last job was in research and development at a supplement company. 3mo
Megabooks What‘s going on with Puff if you don‘t mind me asking? I hope she recovers quickly! 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks not at all and any insight you‘ve got would be DEEPLY appreciated - she was a rescue at somewhere around a week/ ten days old, we‘ve had her since she was about 4 weeks old but as a result, she‘s got no “correct” cat responses which has been tricky for the vets. They‘re saying an infection of the ileum? Walls 1cm thick. Her temp was 40.3 but I think only for a few hours (paranoid cat Mum). She‘s on drip fluids and a feeding tube 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks I‘m worried that today (she crashed Sunday night) her temp seemed up and breathing shallower but they decided since she‘s so screamy getting her temp taken to do it tomorrow when she‘s having a full follow up ultrasound under sedation. I mentioned the breathing to the vet so it was on note but have no idea what to do or ask or expect. Also some raised pancreas numbers but they thought those could be stress?? 3mo
Megabooks I hate to say this, but my other thought besides infection is GI lymphoma. Have you lived in a country where there is feline leukemia or FIV? Has she been been tested for either? Being positive would make it more likely to be lymphoma. Either can be passed through the placenta, so she wouldn‘t necessarily have to have been around other cats to have it. It‘s hard to tell infection from lymphoma from even IBS without a biopsy. Has she had one? 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks and (stop me when this is annoying - Puff‘s my first cat and now I‘m feeling like everything we‘ve done, because it was mainly in China and India could have massive huge holes in it. We only just found out that the Mumbai vet had left out her FELV vaccine - blood tests cleared THAT, thank god but it was a really horrible moment). Do cats need supplements and how much do companies research & test those? 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks yes FIV is rampant in both India and China and I suspect feline leukemia is in India at least but she was tested for both after that first night and they said she was clear. She‘s had a blood test, ultrasound and urine test. No biopsy yet. If the blood tests are clear, can it still be lymphoma? 3mo
Megabooks Yes. Here‘s an article https://www.vetfolio.com/learn/article/gastrointestinal-lymphoma-in-cats I‘m glad they tested her for FIV/FeLV, and I‘m glad you‘re in Singapore. Supplements are a little more complicated. We mainly worked on sick pet ones and ran our operation more like a pharmaceutical company than a typical supplement company. 3mo

Pickpick

Stress read - Anna Hackett has a number of series & I‘ve read books in each. The later ones are generally stronger than the earlier ones in terms of character development and consistency but they are all short, action romance (this series is also sci-fi/ futuristic) with a HEA and positioned in a larger story arc. They‘re not high literature but they‘re firmly within the cannon of their genre and great comfort reads. Recommended. ⬇️
#catsofLitsy

GlassAsDiamonds Hunter is a series of three novellas that bridges Hackett‘s Gladiators House Galen and Gladiators House Rhine series‘. It won‘t make much sense without the larger story arcs and is spoiler heavy for the previous series but, for all the ongoing “OMG THERE ARE MORE HUMANS” just bugs me as a device, Hunter is a nice bridging of those series and the stories - a Christmas novella, and a Corsair and Casino wrap up respectively, are solid and enjoyable. 3mo

Why *reading* is important.... 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ (Actual email I sent this morning after a week of dealing with a website vociferous insisting they HAD delivered the order I hadn‘t received. Might have been a tad heavy on the snark.... but since they included an Australia Post tracking link then my Singaporean shipping address in the next line... I think maybe some snark is justified...🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️).

This is what happens if you shop while cranky with yet another asinine moment of xenophobic idiocy from the White House (the “go home” comments 😡😡😡😡). A cover buy, botanical memoir, 3 political reads, an expat commentary & the Holly Black trilogy I originally went in for (started reading Tithe when it was actually released the first time which... dates me 😂, figured it was time to finish it). Ah well, at least I‘ll be well read while cranky.

JamieArc Fun fact: the time I met Rashida Tlaib, the first thing she said to me was “You like books.” She was a friend of my husband‘s parents, and they had talked about me. I‘m sure you understand that I loved what she knew about me was that I love books ❤️ 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @JamieArc that could be the most perfect meeting story ever!!! (Sorry for the delay, massive health crisis with one of our beloved kitties but ... better late than never! 😊🤞🏻😊) 2mo

As a fan of the precursor Innkeeper series, I read this as a free web serial & was interested in the differences between the two versions. There aren‘t many, truth be told. Sweep of the Blade is Maud and Arland‘s story and it‘s an interesting expansion of the universe. It‘s enjoyable but very much a middle series book. As such, doesn‘t really “end” which is a tad frustrating but it‘s a fun read firmly in keeping with Andrew‘s style & cannon.

Not bad, not brilliant. I enjoyed the book but I wanted a different ending for the author. He is SO self deprecating that it‘s hard to tell how much is “real” & how much is entertainment but as a memoir, it is not at all uplifting or hopeful. Still, it‘s a snarky, often humorous, window deep into the hospitality industry & I found myself going “ha! So THATS what that was” quite a bit. If you‘re offended by profanity, this is not the book for you⬇️

GlassAsDiamonds One note I would have for anyone thinking to try them - the tips or tricks he offers are NOT globally applicable, especially tipping the front desk. Not all countries tip and in some, it‘s actually considered at best crass, at worst offensive to offer money to try and say get a room upgrade that you haven‘t paid for.... know the morals of your destination BEFORE you land. Bad mannered customers however, seem to be global!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3mo

Me, to Dini: “Look, if you‘re not going to move, I *am* going to balance a book on you”....

Warlock Holmes... Probably I‘m being harsh giving it a So-So but I am a fan & ditzy, bumbling Holmes annoyed me. There are moments of hysteria & a brilliant bit on Ode to Joy but I couldn‘t reconcile the pastiche with my beloved Holmes (and it‘s a god damned cliffhanger ending 😡). Curiosity may see me read the rest of the series (this is 3 & was a gift).

RamsFan1963 I read the first one and thought it was good, I have the second but haven't gotten to it yet 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @RamsFan1963 I did wonder!!!!! I was intrigued enough to want to read the first few (kill me, this is a cliffhanger ending, next book released 2020 which ... 😡😡😡😡) But if Holmes doesn‘t have some serious character development, I‘m gonna be peeved! 3mo
RamsFan1963 @GlassAsDiamonds Book 1 ended in a cliffhanger also, I guess that's the writer's hook to bring you back book after book. I wasn't that compelled lol. 3mo

Night | Elie Wiesel

Aaandd that‘s a wrap for #Booked2019 #Spring, let‘s never leave a season so late again 😂

Not a “light” season but a completed one. Ness (#CliFi ) was the weirdest by far, Metal (#FeaturesaMusician ) the most intellectually interesting. Mai Tai (#FoodorBeverageonCover) was the weakest. Talking to my Country (#IndigenousAuthor) dovetailed into I am a Troll (#SocialMediaFocus) and both, terrifyingly seemed to run into Night (#NightOrientedTitle).

Cinfhen Bring on summer 💛🌞🌈🌴 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen agreed. I‘m still finding it difficult to really pin down all my thoughts on Night but I am impressed at how many of us chose it for this prompt. 3mo

Cinfhen And did I mention he׳s recently divorced 😜 3mo
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen Divorced you say.... 🤔🤔🤔🤔 At 3am this morning I discovered that Mr GaD had gone to bed while I was still reading and turned off the hot water heater, leaving me to either stay awake for 30min longer while it heated up to “barely warm” or have a cold shower. Cute neighbour and I may shortly have one more thing in common 😡😡😡😡😡 3mo
Cinfhen Ugh!! The hot water heater is the bain of my existence but only in the winter months😂😂but I totally get it 3mo

Fascinating history of a musical genre as easy to categorise as it is to nail jelly to a wall. If you‘re a Metal fan, you will laugh throughout this written, well researched, iteration of the author‘s comedy. For the uninitiated, it‘s a fascinating & funny history you read with an ever present sense that you‘re missing some jokes. Definitely accompany w. the Spotify playlist.

#FeaturesaMusician (actually dozens!) for #Booked2019 #Spring

My brain finds something so strange about Lennon and McCartney in the same temporal space as Jagger and Richards. They were, of course, but there‘s still something about it that givens me an oddly disconcerted pause!

I was wandering around the apartment trying to find a book for the #FeaturesaMusician prompt for #Booked2019 #Spring and failing until Mr GaD got all excited, rushed off and returned with this one. I actually gave it to him as Christmas present then totally forgot we had it. He was so excited that now, I‘m spending the weekend reading about Heavy Metal... this should be interesting!!! 😊😂😊😂 #catsofLitsy

Night | Elie Wiesel

Some levity (she would *not* be moved 🤦🏻‍♀️).

For all my study, I had not read this. The notion terrified me but, somehow, Night is eminently readable. It‘s horrific but particularly noting the foreword, finishing it feels like an act of rebellion against that evil and a tribute to all those lost to it.

At our war memorials, Australia‘s epithet is “Lest we forget”. I think it‘s appropriate here, too.

The paragraph when I finally lost it.

In another lifetime, I was a History major. A lifetime before that, I was a contrarian teenager at a Catholic high school who chose Raoul Wallenberg as a character study (to the actual delight of the far-more-contrarian-than-me Nun teaching while waiting for her visa to go back to running an orphanage in Ghana).

The history and the horror aren‘t new to me but this...?

What must Wiesel think of us now? 💔

I needed a #Nightorientedtitle for #Booked2019 which were surprisingly light on my shelves (I‘m trying to read from books I already own). Somehow after Talking to My Country and I am a Troll, Elie Wiesel‘s Night wanted to be read.

Not sure about the segue from a Hawaiian based cozy mystery to a Nobel Peace Prize winner‘s “determination that humanity learn from his experience in the death camps” but here goes.

Finding a book with #FoodorBeverageonthecover for #Booked2019 #Spring was surprisingly difficult. Thank heavens for kindle sales during my “Hawaii” phase. Unfortunately other than ticking that box (ha!) this wasn‘t a great read. The characters are interesting and the setting is amazing but mystery was obvious and most of the plot turns on stupidity & abrogating common sense. I‘m not a huge cozy mystery fan & it‘s not bad but... not for me.

Cinfhen Look at you!!! Killing it!!!! 4mo
