I had a BUSY reading week and actually a busy week in general, hence why I‘m behind on a few reviews. Really enjoyed the new book by Rachel Beanland coming out in April and Babel was a total surprise pick for me! Vanderbilt was very interesting and Fatty Fatty was good but I have some thoughts…same with the Gadsby. I just COULD NOT wrap my head around My Volcano and it‘s the year for #AllHailTheBail so I quit by page 34. #NoRegrets

Deblovestoread You had a great reading week! And I feel validated on my bail of My Volcano so thank you 😁 2mo
Cinfhen @Deblovestoread honestly I was like, why am I wasting my time…it‘s not working for me. I‘m really happy with my decision and you should be too 😂😘 2mo
cariashley @Cinfhen @Deblovestoread i probably should have just bailed on My Volcano too but I stuck it out when I really didn‘t need to… have to be better about that! 2mo

Cathythoughts You liked Babel ! I can‘t wait to get to it. It could take me another while.. time 🙄 I‘m so excited you liked it though 2mo
Cinfhen It‘s always hindsight @cariashley but im trying to give myself an easy out 😂😂 it‘s January and I have SO MANY books I want to read!!!! 2mo
Cinfhen Yesssss @Cathythoughts I REALLY liked it even though it‘s long and not my usual genre. That‘s why it‘s good to at least try before saying no to a book!!! 2mo
TrishB Great week 👍🏻 34 pages! Wow 😯 @Cathythoughts Babel is 99p on kindle today if you haven‘t brought yet. 2mo
Cathythoughts @TrishB Thanks Trish , I have it on audible, but for 99p I‘m getting the kindle too, I might like the option of reading 😘 2mo
TrishB @Cathythoughts cool 👍🏻 2mo
Cinfhen Can‘t argue with 99p @Cathythoughts 💚🎉 2mo
Cinfhen I did listen on Audible @Cathythoughts and I thought it was FANTASTIC narration 🙌🏻 2mo
Megabooks Great week!! I feel like we read a lot of the same books but rarely feel the same about them. 😂😂 always love to know what you think though!! 💜😘 2mo
Cinfhen Hahaha @Megabooks SO TRUE 🫶🏼 2mo
Cinfhen You‘re still my go to source for all things bookish (and medical ) @Megabooks 😘😘 2mo
squirrelbrain I‘ve just ordered My Volcano, and now I‘m worried. 😬 You‘ve had a great week though, other than that! 2mo
Cinfhen I hope you like it more than I did @squirrelbrain xx 2mo
RebelReader @squirrelbrain I just had it come in at my library and I‘m picking it up Monday. I‘m not afraid to bail if it‘s not grabbing me, but I worry too because @Cinfhen and I often agree on books. 2mo
Cinfhen I‘ll be curious to see what you think @RebelReader we do read very similarly 👯‍♀️ 2mo

Slow reading week. Have a cold and spent a lot of time watching Netflix and drinking litres of herbal tea. Finished the books on the right and left, and a woollen hat though.

Started "Proven Guilty" (and another hat).

Despite some setbacks, I managed to finish 6 books this week!
I really enjoyed the Keefe and the whacky One‘s Company. I also found the memoir by iCarly alum Jeannette McCurdy gripping. The other three were ok. I‘m stalled with my 3 in progress but hope to pick them back up this week.

I had a really fabulous week, thanks to a lot of audio time!!
Sedaris was hilarious but I think my favorite was the Booth!! Chemistry & Thunder were both very good but Thunder had terrible audio production and Chemistry was a bit too kitsch for me. I currently have two in progress, which are both good!! Tagging them below 👇🏼

I‘m surprised by how much I read this week. One book went into #hibernation but the rest were all enjoyable. I really enjoyed my YA #SFF and my IRL bookclub book (The Lost Shtetl). The Mercies was a well written HF and I look forward to discussing with the #LiteraryCrew
Next week I hope to focus on #ReadingAfrica22 - I‘ve started the memoir by #Ethiopian born chef, Marcus Samuelsson and it‘s quite good. I think my weakest read was the romance😒

November is off to a good start ☺️

#bookreport @Cinfhen

The first half of the week was all about a bunch of excellent books. All 5 of the finished ones were terrific.

Then I bailed on two in a row - yikes!

The Chosen and the Beautiful is a retelling of Gatsby from Jordan Baker‘s point of view. She seems bored with her life of riches and extravagant parties, and about halfway through I grew bored of watching her be bored.

Fox & I seemed strangely detached- I may come back.

Cinfhen Too bad about the Gatsby retelling… I‘ve seen good reviews but I totally get why you #hibernated for now!!! 2y
Hooked_on_books I bailed on TCATB too. It felt so constrained by the source material that I found it really stiff. I wish she‘d used Gatsby as inspiration rather than literally trying to rewrite it. 2y

I read 8 books in May, double my usual amount; mainly because most of them were very short. The Midnight Library is my new favorite book so far this year. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I read my #LMPBC selection (mailed)
Did not read #bookspin selection
I‘m about 2/3 done on my #doublespin book
I did NOT get to read my #cbbc book but did mail it out to @Pogue last week
The Midnight Library was my #IRLBOOKCLUB read. I was the only one to ❤️ it. 🥲

What a wonderful week for reading!
Lots of GREAT books 😊❤️
My only dud ( and it wasn‘t terrible) was One, Two, Three and I wasn‘t overly impressed with the Woodson ( but that‘s because I‘m not much of a MG reader)
The others were all 4 & 5 star reads. I can‘t even pick a top 3 from the 6. Each book had its own special qualities.

Megabooks I‘m sure you have a lot of great choices! I just started Persist by Elizabeth Warren after finishing up my third McWhorter. The McW is great and available on hoopla (tagged). (And after an evening of improving a bit...I‘m back under the blankets. 👎🏻) 2y
TrishB @Megabooks my son is dropping big hints about the Warren book! 2y
Megabooks @TrishB I was just reading it while doing laundry (audiobook). I‘m a big Warren fan. I think she has a lot of commonsense ideas that are already normalized in other countries, and I hope she‘s able to get some through Congress while Biden is in office. The first section is about universal childcare, which seems like such an obvious thing to invest in, but it meets terrible resistance here. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y

John Boyne - not my fave of his, clever though.
Simon Kernick- good start to a new series for me.
Angela Marsons- still great series.
Dave Ball- too many synths and too much name dropping.
V.E. Schwab - started last night and really enjoying so far.

Another great reading week although I still haven‘t picked up the one ARC I‘ve been “meaning” to, instead I listened to 2 #AudioArc(s) this week. #bookreport I enjoyed my books much more this week - Sweetbitter and Hamnet were both great - and then we went back into lockdown which was a curveball to the head 😱 - but the sun came out and I finally got back in the game and read Go Tell It On The Mountain. A deserved classic that‘s not so much enjoyable as eye opening and powerful. Hopefully the unexpected outbreak has been ringfenced and lockdown will end in 2 weeks.

batsy How are you doing? I was reading about NZ reverting to lockdown again. Is it pretty much as strict a lockdown as it was before? 3y
Centique @batsy I‘m doing well thanks Suba 😊 It‘s not as strict a lockdown, just level 3 - so you can get contactless pick ups if you online order from cafes and shops - but even so, we‘re having less compliance with it. Rumours and conspiracies run amuck 😬🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
Cinfhen I‘m so curious about the O‘Farrell .....I haven‘t done well with her in the past but the HF angle has my interest peaked 3y

Cinfhen As far as lockdown goes that sucks! Israel went through a second wave, but it didn‘t seem to really slow people down...it‘s very difficult to herd the masses a second time. The outbreak seemed to be around the teenagers/ young adults. I can‘t believe we‘re still talking about Corona in August. It‘s so surreal 3y
Cinfhen Hope #HisElderliness is well xxx 3y
Centique @Cinfhen I thoroughly enjoyed it but it wasn‘t quite the Madeleine Miller level of historical fiction - a little heavy handed IMO. So I don‘t know how you‘ll find it - will be interested to find out! 3y
Centique @Cinfhen you‘re so right that it‘s harder to herd the masses this time around. Just got to do the best we can and not get too angered about it all. #hiselderliness is good thanks - he‘s got plenty of food but he‘ll run out of books soon - I‘m hoping the library opens for kerbside collection sometime soon 🤞 3y
Cinfhen I‘m glad you‘re all well & keeping sane & safe ♥️♥️♥️ I think I‘m gonna #BorrowNotBuy Hamnet 😁 3y
batsy @Centique That's good to know, P! I know, if some measure of lockdown were to be imposed here again the compliance level will not be great :/ Take care ❤️ 3y

Well, I genuinely thought I hadn‘t had much time to read this week..... although I think I was already partway through 4 of these at the beginning of the week.

Not doing too badly on the challenges either, and a bit of #doubledipping going on this week too.

All good reads too, with only This Mournable Body being a bit of a slog.

TrishB Looks like a great week to me 👍🏻 3y
Cinfhen Impressive 🙌🏻💕How was the new Daisy Johnson 3y
Cinfhen I just checked out your review of Sisters xx 3y

I don‘t think I‘ll finish either book today so here‘s my #BookReport ~ August 9-15
Two went into #hibernation 🐻
Two #InProgress
Five read...loved the Adam Rippon audio and really enjoyed The Dutch House on audio 🎧

emilyhaldi Oh I also loooooved Warlight!!! But it's a very quiet, slow-burn of a book so I can understand why it's in hibernation 😊 3y
megnews I love the description “hibernation.” This happens to me often and I never had a description for it. Thanks! 3y
TrishB Good week 😘 3y

Cinfhen It‘s a great term @megnews but I think @julesG first used it ♥️🐻🙌🏻 3y
Cinfhen Thanks @emilyhaldi ❤️I will definitely be revisiting Warlight and I‘m hoping to start Beautiful Ruins later this week 🤞🏼 3y
Cinfhen Slower than other weeks @TrishB but that‘s because I did watch some Netflix and I got lost on YouTube watching Adam Rippon and half the US skating team 3y
julesG Thanks! Yes, I took that term from my knitting projects and adopted it for reading. @megnews 3y
TrishB It‘s still a pretty impressive read pile 😁 3y
Kalalalatja What do you think of Swimg Time so far? 3y
Cinfhen I‘m liking it @Kalalalatja / it‘s my first Zaide Smith ... it‘s just when I put it down I‘m not thinking about it. 3y
Daisey This looks like quite an interesting reading week. 3y
Cinfhen Ha; it was @Daisey Thanks to #BookSpinBingoAugust it really shakes up my reading week😁 (edited) 3y

KarenUK Great week again! 😘💕 3y
TrishB I started a new one tonight and it‘s a bit meh....will sleep on it. Great week again 👍🏻 3y

Cathythoughts I was wondering about Red Head ... just looked up your review! Sounds like a good palate cleanser as you say ❤️👍🏻 3y
eraderneely Hubs and I both liked Let the People... AND we get to vote on it this fall in Colorado 3y

#BookReport June 21 - June 27
How is it almost the end of June???
Another good reading/ listening week 📚🎧 I bailed on the David Mitchell ARC....Just wasn‘t my thing and I couldn‘t make it through Paul Beatty‘s satire The Sellout☹️I really LOVED Claire Lombardo‘s debut The Most Fun, it was a full bodied family saga♥️Around The World disappointed and the others were good, not great.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Wow—so many awesome picks! 3y
Megabooks I DNFed the sellout too. 3y
rockpools Awesome! 3y

DGRachel Great week! 3y
squirrelbrain Great week! 👍❤️ 3y
Cinfhen I was loving the prologue @Megabooks but by the time I got to chapter 3, I had enough 3y
Cinfhen It was a great week @squirrelbrain @DGRachel @RachelO @BarbaraTheBibliophage and I actually read with both my kindle and a good old fashioned paperback this week!!! 3y
TrishB A great week 👍🏻 3y
CarolynM I didn't make it past chapter 2 of The Sellout☹️ 3y
Cinfhen So you were smarter than I was @CarolynM I held on for too long 3y
Cathythoughts Nice work ❤️👍🏻I‘m looking forward to the next Claire Lombardo 3y

#bookreport

Finished “The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes.”- ⭐⭐ I did read a large chunk of it in four days, but was disappointed overall.

Started “The Girl Who Smiled Beads” on audiobook-very engrossing so far.

Also started and bailed on my June #bookspin-another #kindlebacklog title that couldn‘t keep my interest.

@Cinfhen

Cinfhen Oh, I‘m glad Beads is good so far. Does the author read the audiobook?? 3y
Cinfhen Oh, wait I see the print....read by someone else 🤪 3y
SLibrarian5 @Cinfhen I think the author might read a few chapters here and there... The narrator is pretty good, but I am interested in hearing the author read her own words. 3y
Cinfhen I agree, memoirs are usually best when read by the author...although sometimes a “professional” can add to intensity and make the words come alive( especially if it‘s nonfiction material) 3y

Another good reading week thanks to my audiobook addiction 🎧💖
I adored The Henna Artist and was really drawn to Mikel Jollett‘s personal story.
The anthology and YA memoir were good the others were ok, I‘d say they all fall under #BorrowNotBuy
I bailed on an ARC and my #DoubleSpin
I‘m debating putting Blackbird in #Hibernation and I‘ve removed In Extremis from #Hibernation
Utopia Avenue is weird ~ not feeling it
Nearly done Patience

TrishB I‘m desperate to read Utopia Avenue!! Sad you‘re not feeling it! 3y
marleed I read The Henna Artist as required Reese reading in May and A burning as assigned by Jenna for June. So fun to have a 2-month armchair visit to India! 3y
Jennifer3 I loved A Place for Us but it was a challenging read to get through to finally arrive at the pay off in the end. So I completely understand the bail! 3y
See All 9 Comments
Cinfhen I‘ve only bailed on David Mitchell before @TrishB but I thought this one would be different...I wish I could share my ARC with you 3y
Cinfhen I chose A Burning for my BOTM @marleed but I haven‘t gotten it yet...did u prefer one book over the other??? 3y
Cinfhen Maybe I‘ll try another time @Jennifer3 because I know it‘s gotten so much love 3y
marleed Oh, honestly their only similarity is that they are both set in India. I liked both quite a bit. A Burning is also different than our current situation, but the movement of lives matter is very strong and gives the book a very current vibe. (edited) 3y
Cinfhen @marleed I‘m looking forward to 3y
marleed @Cinfhen I can‘t wait for your review! And if I respond hopefully I‘ll review my response for the proper use of the word ‘their‘ - geesh! 3y

This past week has been a great one for audio. I finished one, listened to a second in its entirety, and started a third. I also actually cracked Twenty Years After open again, and read a couple chapters. I didn‘t quite make a short story per day of Berlin Noir, but I read several, and I‘ll make my Dune page goal by the end of the day. So, overall, I‘m pleased with this week‘s #bookreport. 🥳

Cinfhen Yay!!!! 3y
