I can see why this book leaves people divisive - it‘s an uncomfortable premise. A middle age woman (43) lusting after a young boy (17). The same boy that her 15 year old niece is involved with. I was hooked and enjoyed every cringy moment. The writing was strong although the ending was a bit disappointing. Loved the audio narration by Hillary Huber.

Cinfhen I think this might work for you @KarenUK @BarbaraBB 3d
KarenUK Sounds a bit like a book I read years ago, that was definitely uncomfortable but well written… 3d
BarbaraBB Thanks, I think so too! #stacked 3d

Bailedbailed

Bit of a #bailfest today, which isn‘t like me! 🤣

I thought this one was proving difficult due to the random incorrectly hyphenated words scattered about the #netgalley download, as well as the off-putting titles, appearing somewhere on every page.

However on reading Holly‘s @Hooked_on_books review I realised that the book itself is tough to get through; it‘s rather pretentiously self-conscious so I‘m giving up.

dabbe Ooh, that would drive me crazy, too! 🤩😍🤗 4d
Hooked_on_books I hate to say it, but good call. And the errors in the copy are obnoxious! 4d
ChaoticMissAdventures That is so odd I follow him on Twitter and he doesn't hyphenate like this I wonder what happened. He is obsessed with coffee though and not drinking after like 2 which I strongly disagree with and will continue to have my last cup around 6-7pm 😂 4d

sarahbarnes This is disappointing. I have this one coming in at the library and I was looking forward to it after liking Real Life quite a bit. 4d
squirrelbrain @ChaoticMissAdventures - there are often weird formatting errors on NetGalley so I think it‘s them rather than him…. 3d
squirrelbrain @sarahbarnes - don‘t let me put you off! At least it‘s a #borrownotbuy if you don‘t like it. 3d
MicheleinPhilly Oh no. I was so looking forward to this. 😕 3d
Megabooks Uh-oh! I just started this. 😬😬 2d

Mehso-so

From the official #ToBSummerCamp list - it‘s a coming of age story mixed with overcoming grief and sadness yet I never connected to any of the characters. A family trying to cope with the loss of their mother/spouse, each channeling their emotions in different forms. #GoodNotGreat #BorrowNotBuy

BarbaraBB Just bought it! We‘ll see I am planning to read it along with the #CampToB schedule 4d
squirrelbrain I requested this from the library, it‘s one of the few from the list that I can get hold of. 4d
Cinfhen I was able to request a few from the library and then my holds came in super fast so I just read them right away @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB I did buy one on my kindle 4d
sarahbarnes I got this one from the library. I‘m disappointed to hear it didn‘t work for you. Bummer. 4d
Cinfhen I‘m curious to hear your thoughts @sarahbarnes it‘s not a bad book at all / I just was left wanting more 4d

Big Swiss: A Novel | Jen Beagin
post image

I‘m pretty hyped about this year‘s #CampToB23 reads 💃💃 after last year‘s choices. I‘ve read Big Swiss, I have a copy of #InternationalBooker longlisted The Birthday Party and I‘ve been wanting to read the LaValle and the Urrea anyhow! The other two books I haven‘t heard of but I can‘t wait to find out.

It‘s almost as good as #CampLitsy23 🤪

Ruthiella Yeah, there‘s some nice crossover with our longlist. I will read Big Swiss, because I already have it out from the library, but I likely won‘t read the rest. I only have so much time to read and I‘m prioritizing our own tournament! 😃 2w
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I‘m happy you do! Me too of course 😀 2w
Cinfhen Ahhhh!! You‘re really up on the news!!! Thanks for sharing!!!! I bailed on both The Birthday Party and Big Swiss - haven‘t heard of two either, but will probably look to #BorrowNotBuy the remaining 4!! It‘s a great addition to our tournament. Very excited about these books. 2w

sarahbarnes Wow, thanks for sharing this! I hadn‘t seen it yet! I‘m excited about these, and have Bday Party and Big Swiss on my list already. 2w
Hooked_on_books I‘ll have to research some of these, which I love! The only one I‘ve read is Lone Women and it exceeded my expectations. I‘d rather not read Big Swiss, but I‘ll look into the others. I‘m glad you posted this! 2w
Deblovestoread Thanks for sharing! I have Lone Women and want to read Good Night, Irene. Not sure about Big Swiss and the bottom 3 are new to me which makes it a fun list! 2w
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Why did you bail on The Birthday Party? The edition I have is super unattractive (small font, no alinea breaks) but I‘ve been hoping the story would make me forget about that 😀 2w
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Thanks for the heads-up on 2w
Cinfhen I had the Fitzcarldo edition and I couldn‘t take the pretentious writing, never ending descriptive inner monologues and narrative style. It wasn‘t for me 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2w
squirrelbrain Ooh exciting… nearly as good as #camplitsy23! 🤣 2w
Suet624 @Ruthiella between Booker, TOB and our Litsy camp i‘d just never get to read my own books. I decided just to read the Litsy tournament books too. (edited) 2w
BarbaraBB @Suet624 ❤️👌🏽 2w
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen hmmm. Sounds tough. We‘ll see. 2w
Cinfhen Good luck, B! You seem to be better with those novels than I am. 2w
Ruthiella @Suet624 Exactly! We gotta keep it real. 👍 2w
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I am not so sure about that! But I‘ll give it a try because of the ToB 2w

Bailedbailed

So I was in Brooklyn recently visiting my daughter when we saw this cover in B&N. She said “I get my coffee to go on Pineapple St”, a block over from her dorm. I thought this would be a fun read set in a location I would know and recognize. Nope! I knew after the first chapter that this is not a book for me. I knew the writing style and the white, privileged, snobby characters would irritate me. 🪂 Thankful it was a #BorrowNotBuy #libby

squirrelbrain I liked this for what it was, but it was way over-hyped as the ‘next big thing‘. 2w
Cuilin @squirrelbrain I honestly didn‘t know about it until I went to Brooklyn. My decision may have been too hasty after one chapter. 🤷‍♀️ 2w
squirrelbrain The characters were pretty much all obnoxious all of the time so it depends if you like that kind of thing. I reviewed it as a slightly more acerbic Danielle Steel - I‘d call it a ‘holiday‘ read; certainly not the literary fiction it was made out to be. 2w
Cuilin @squirrelbrain Yeah, the characters would‘ve driven me crazy. Thanks, I‘m comfortable with my DNF. It‘s certainly not literary fiction. 2w
Megabooks Agree this wasn‘t great! I finished but don‘t think I would‘ve missed anything if I hadn‘t. 2w

Jillian Medoff writes a story of a privileged and moneyed college student accused of raping his on/off girlfriend. This book dragged in parts but I was too invested to stop. Outstanding narration from Marin Ireland elevated the prose. #BorrowNotBuy probably will not appeal to everyone as the fictitious Quinn family are truly horrible.

Bklover #borrownotbuy is one of my favorite hashtags, and I always forget to use it! Hope you are having a wonderful day, my friend!!❤️ 2w
Cinfhen Thanks for reaching out @Bklover Hope you have a wonderful day 🥰 2w

A pretty good dystopian, though I don‘t think it‘s one that will stick with me. I‘d call it a low pick, #borrownotbuy.

Definite #borrownotbuy for the majority of you! 😂😂😂 (Unless you're really interested in the 18th century / Defoe / Crusoe!)

Cinfhen It‘s definitely a dense topic but sounded fascinating 3w
Librarybelle Sounds like a great one for Crusoe fans - I‘ve not ever had a desire to read it, haha! 3w
jenniferw88 @Librarybelle trust me, you've not missed much! I studied it at uni & the 2nd time I read it (to find the quotes for the essay) I fell asleep! 😂😂😂 3w

SOOOOO GOOD!!!! I‘m hooked!! It‘s definitely giving me @KarenUK vibes!!!! And I know you disliked The Girls @BarbaraBB but im thinking you might enjoy this one from Cline. #ARC #NetGalley

TheBookHippie I hated the girls 😵‍💫😂 So you think this is better written and not stolen history? 😂😵‍💫😅🤣 4w
Cinfhen Ouch!! I thought The Girls was inspired by history 😉 @TheBookHippie 😜 (edited) 4w
Cinfhen I am loving this one, is it 💯 unique… probably not but it‘s not the Manson‘s 😂😂😂 4w

BarbaraBB I‘m with you @TheBookHippie I hated it for similar reasons. But if Cindy says this one‘s better we might give her another chance 😉 and it almost made #CampLitsy23! (edited) 4w
TheBookHippie @Cinfhen used as voyeurism is not my cup of tea. 4w
Cinfhen I‘m thinking @TheBookHippie might not be a fan of this book @BarbaraBB and it might be a #BorrowNotBuy for you BUT I‘m sticking with my initial instincts and I‘m sure it‘s totally a pick for @KarenUK 😗 (edited) 4w
KarenUK I loved the girls, so I am totally in! 💯 sounds my vibe. Think I have an Arc somewhere?! 😂 4w
TheBookHippie @Cinfhen I‘m a problem 😂 4w
squirrelbrain I‘m looking forward to this; I have an ARC. 4w
ashw21 Really looking forward to this 4w
Cinfhen It was really good @squirrelbrain @ashw21 @KarenUK can‘t wait to hear your thoughts as well 🩷 You‘re my favorite kind of problem @TheBookHippie an opinionated woman xxxx 4w

#CampLitsy23 longlist gem!! Thank to the Litten who nominated. 🤩 Now, please someone else read this because there is so much to discuss!!

Elliott, a misfit loner at the gym, notices a new woman. She seems self-possessed and strong in a way that is intriguing. He continues to get to know her as she transforms. Through him, her mother, and her friend, you get to know different facets of this enigmatic woman.

squirrelbrain I saw a really positive review of this in the UK Times last weekend. Trots off to #netgalley to have a looky-see. 🏃‍♀️ 4w
squirrelbrain It‘s available so I‘ve requested…. 🤞 4w
BarbaraBB I think @MicheleinPhilly nominated this one. I want to read it too! 4w
