Mehso-so

Just remembered, I forgot to review this #ComingOfAge story of two sisters growing up in 1950‘s Detroit. Unfortunately this story fell flat for me. It was too long and the author threw so many cliches and hot-button topics into the plot that this book felt overplayed. It lacked subtlety and authenticity. Some plot lines dragged and others were introduced and resolved in a paragraph. Not my favorite by Ms. Weiner. #NetGalley #ARC #MorningRead

TrishB It lived up to its title then! 5h
Cinfhen Hahaha!!! Yes @TrishB I wanted to include that somehow in my review but ran out of space😂🤣😂This is definitely a #BorrowNotBuy 5h

Recommended4Reading Hey...love the pic!!! So what kind of plant is that? 5h
Cinfhen Thanks @Recommended4Reading 😊I honestly don‘t know 😜 4h
Megabooks Doesn‘t sound like anything I‘d enjoy anyway, but I enjoyed your review!! I‘m kind of down on historical fiction right now. 2h
Cinfhen I almost picked up this book today @megabooks because I haven‘t read a really good historical fiction in awhile but I have such a crazy out of control TBR & NetGalley reviews to get through so I walked away without purchasing... have u read this one 👉🏼 2h
britt_brooke Great review! I haven‘t read any of her books in a long time. Think I‘ll skip this, too. 2h
Cinfhen Ooops... don‘t think publisher will be very pleased with me 🤭 @britt_brooke @Megabooks you‘re meant to be stacking 😉 24m

When Carey Logan, the darling of the art world commits suicide both patrons and fellow artists are left to wonder why. Enter our unnamed narrator, a raising star of the art scene, who soon finds herself being compared to Carey Logan. Following in Carey‘s footsteps our narrator‘s world becomes blurred between art and reality. I found parts of this story similar to Daisy Jones, Still Lives And Museum of Modern Love. #NetGalley #ARC #BorrowNotBuy

#MayMovieMagic #HighwayToHell This first person account sounds fascinating and I‘m thinking of using an Audible credit🧐Has anyone listened to the audio??? Is it worth it??? My Hoopla & OverDrive don‘t have the book or audio on offer 😖

Also works for #LongAndWindingRoad @Eggs and #AMatterOfPerspective @Megabooks

GlassAsDiamonds Book itself sounds fabulous! 4w
Cinfhen I just listened to a sample @GlassAsDiamonds #HardPass UGH 😑 I think I‘m gonna do print when I find a cheap copy 🤓👍🏻 4w
Megabooks Sounds fascinating! I used to watch Gangland on A&E all the time. I‘m sorry to say I haven‘t listened to it. Have you looked to see if you‘ve read with that narrator before? Ah I just saw you checked! Too bad. Definitely fits the prompt. Thanks for joining in! 🖖🏻 Good luck finding a copy. Goals always make shopping at used bookstores more fun! 4w

Cinfhen So true @Megabooks although my shopping list is the size of an Encyclopedia 😛 4w
rohit-sawant I've been meaning to read Hunter S. Thompson for years now and was hoping to start with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This one sounds intriguing, too! 4w
TrishB Have read one by the author....😱😱 way too young!! 4w
Eggs Great choice❣️ 4w
britt_brooke @rohit-sawant They‘re both good. I liked Rum Diary a lot, too. 4w
britt_brooke I listened to this on audio and it was decent. I felt like it could‘ve been shorter, honestly, but it was interesting. 4w
Cinfhen Thanks @britt_brooke for your thoughts xx I‘m in no rush to read this but I‘ll keep my eyes open for a cheap copy 4w

#Booked2019 #spring #CliFi Gee,I finish this book on Earth Day. With 2 major flood events , sea level is 5o ft. higher in NYC.The avenues are now canals ,the rich move further north & build super scrapers & call it Super Venice while some struggle to sustain water logged buildings about to topple .Toxic investment still plays the game.Pick w/ an * a little too long w/ too many players, it was a Hugo nominee, kudos to author 4 writing on climate.

Cinfhen Well done!!!! I‘m curious about this book, but “too long” makes me nervous 😬 I‘ll wait for the summer and try my US library. It seems like a #BorrowNotBuy 1mo
Leftcoastzen @Cinfhen good plan .You might give it a try.Interesting to picture NYC under those conditions and liked characters ability to adapt and do positive things under the circumstances! 1mo
Reggie The other day a regular at work introduced me to a friend of hers who was moving back to Florida and like the cool, put my foot in my mouth, guy that I am, I said”what?!!! Why, by 2050 it‘s gonna be underwater!!” Stacked. 1mo
Leftcoastzen @Reggie Oops! I loved living near the coast in So Cal but there are definitely different times in our future due to climate issues. 1mo
Leftcoastzen @Reggie Just heard Maricopa county is the fastest growing county in U.S. My favorite climate is in the Bay Area , foggy and cool most of the time. Phoenix metro is in Maricopa, we have little rain , the average # of days per year over 100 degrees is 110 ! We will have our first 100 this week.Won‘t end till the end of September. And I‘m sure you know southwest states are sharing the Colorado river water. Not sustainable. 1mo

For a story that takes place in the span of 12 hours, the author managed to cover a lot of ground. While I thought the passing of Nelson Mandela would fit more heavily into the plot, it was an interesting piece of SA history to add to the tension. Using many local voices to narrate the day, Melrose expertly captures the complexity and intensity of Joburg. Great writing, ok story but would recommend and try another by this author. #BorrowNotBuy

Home is #SoFarAway when you‘re driving with a dead refugee in the trunk of your car from Morroco to the Netherlands. And where is home actually when your parents are Morrocan but you are born and raised in the Netherlands? Neither feels like home. The eternal dilemma of the migrant and the current flow of North Africans crossing the Mediterranean form the core of this novel.

Cinfhen Your review makes me want to read this book, even though @Simona gave it a so-so. But im gonna go library route #BorrowNotBuy 2mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen it is a #borrownotbuy kind of book indeed! I would have send you my copy but I‘m afraid it wouldn‘t be of much help 😉😘 2mo

#unpopularOpinion time. This print and audiobook stand squarely in the “just okay” corner for me. Graham, Karen, Eddie, Warren, Pete, and Camilla are all one-dimensional, half-drawn characters. Rod and Teddy are filler.

Daisy, Billy, and Camilla are the only interesting voices on the full-cast #audiobook. Karen sounds like a teenager when she‘s supposed to be 60. Should‘ve waited for the library. 3⭐️

lele1432 Glad I saw this. The sample I read didn't completely grab me because of the format...I found it hard to connect to the characters. I noticed a lot of reviews saying audio is the way to go and the cast is great, but I wasn't sold and now I might skip it altogether lol. If anything it'll be a #borrownotbuy for me! 2mo
Megabooks @lele1432 I definitely wish I had borrowed and not bought! The audiobook is better than print, though. 2mo

Jee_HookedOnBookz Thank you for this unpopular opinion! Think I'm going with @lele1432 on this! No audio (coz I can't do audio) or print for me, for now at least hahaa unless I change my mind! I browsed a few pages too.. Didn't really capture me.. But some have mentioned that it takes some getting used to... 🤷‍♀️ 2mo
lele1432 @Jee_HookedOnBookz yes! I'm curious to know the full story, but normally if I'm not captivated in the beginning, it's not going to be a stellar read for me. 😕 2mo
Jee_HookedOnBookz @lele1432 then better invest your time in other books🙂 too many other good books waiting to be read! 😉 2mo
lele1432 @Jee_HookedOnBookz that is great advice!! 2mo
Megabooks @Jee_HookedOnBookz small bits are usually my jam, but what really got to me is that she couldn‘t figure out a way to do that AND develop complex characters. 🤷🏻‍♀️ just move on to better and brighter! 😁😁 2mo
Megabooks @L_auren I should probably tag you! 😉👍🏻 2mo

#FridayMorningChill This book falls under the category of #TooUnbelievableToBeBelievable Im happy to see #BOTM offering NonFiction selections 🤓♥️

lele1432 Is it well-written? I almost added it to my box but wasn't sure about the writing style. But now I'm so curious about the events that took place, I want to get it lol. 2mo
Cinfhen It‘s a little overwhelming to process @lele1432 and the writing is at times muddled. I think it‘s a #BorrowNotBuy 2mo
lele1432 @Cinfhen thanks so much!! My shelf space is pretty scarce these days so I try to only buy physical copies of books worthy of the space. I'll wait on my library hold for this one! 2mo

Female Persuasion | Meg Wolitzer
post image
Mehso-so

I‘m not sure why but for some reason Meg Wolitzer‘s books just feel insincere. This story meant to be a rallying cry to young activists and feminist felt forced. Ask me next week the characters names and I‘m sure I won‘t be able to recall. A fast read but not one with staying power. #BorrowNotBuy #MoreMehThanYeah Thank you @LibrarianRyan for the blow dryer trick😉That pesky sticker came right off‼️

Reggie Idk, I still think about the guys in here. Cory and the other guy who cheated on his wife she gave permission to only with floozies and not complicated women ONLY to have his wife leave him later for love. Which maybe if it‘s a book about feminism and your favorite characters are the guys maybe it was a fail. I know I gave this book a pick but its lack of intersectionality also bugged me. Maybe I didn‘t like it as much as I thought I did. Lol 3mo
C.Perone I was on the fence with this one, thinking of giving her one more shot; but you and @Reggie helped decide not to waste my time. Thank you for saving me precious reading time 😊 3mo
Zelma I completely agree with you on Meg Wolitzer. I always think I should love her books and never do. After two or three that have felt disappointing, I am done trying. (The again, I said that with Anne Tyler, and the last book i read of hers was my favorite that year. Ugh, I rarely give up on authors completely for that reason.) 3mo

Cinfhen I feel bad because you might like it @C.Perone it‘s not a dumpfire but I just have a really negative aversion to MW. 3mo
KatieDid927 Yeah this was a lukewarm pick for me. Not her best. 3mo
Cinfhen I‘m not saying I‘ll never read her again @Zelma but I won‘t be shelling out any $$$ 😜 #LibraryRoute 3mo
Cinfhen I liked Corey a lot @reggie but even he felt like a caricature and the Loci exec/ hedge fund guy too. They both felt scripted and I kept wondering if Faith was a stand in for Meg herself!! I don‘t know @KatieDid927 I can‘t put my finger on what was bugging me about the book??!? 3mo
Zelma @Cinfhen well, I definitely agree on that! And I may never read here again. I just keep getting attracted by the synopses on the back of her books. I‘m so weak. 🙄 3mo
C.Perone @Cinfhen Don't feel bad!! Your comments and everyone else's were a tremendous help! There is only so much reading time in a day that appreciate the candor when I'm on the fence about a book. Everything you said was exactly what I was afraid of with her writing, so you're my hero😊😊 3mo
KatieDid927 @Cinfhen I think you‘re right about it being insincere. It‘s like she was trying to be deep with it but didn‘t actually get there? It ultimately wasn‘t that compelling and the characters were flat. 3mo
Bookgirl I do not like this author‘s style. Cannot understand the praise she gets 3mo
Cinfhen Hehehe I‘m loving all this smack talk @Bookgirl @KatieDid927 @C.Perone @Zelma i feel it‘s a little bit like Mean Girls 😜😂😂 3mo
Kalalalatja I have been on the fence with this for so long. On paper, it sounds like my kind of book, but I‘m just not compelled to pick it up. And with all the luke warm reviews, I doubt I ever will be 🤷‍♀️ 3mo
KGlibrarian I‘m always amazed at how different readers‘ tastes are. She is one of my favorite authors and I loved this book. What I connect with is her in-depth characterization and long, thoughtful passages. But I‘ve heard from others that her prose is boring to them. As a librarian I‘ve learned that I can never assume another reader will connect to the same books as me! 3mo
BookNerd9906 Good to know. Thanks. 3mo
Cinfhen Thanks for standing up for Meg Wolitzer @KGlibrarian I know LOADS of people who really like and enjoy her work and she‘s been publishing for decades. So maybe give it a try @Kalalalatja @BookNerd9906 3mo
Reviewsbylola I think I read one of her books and I felt it was mediocre. I love her covers though. 3mo
