A good, but slow moving account of the Reverend Willie Maxwell who was suspected in the deaths of 5 family members in an insurance scam and the man who murdered Maxwell at his stepdaughter's funeral. Lee didn't feature as prominently as I would have liked but I did find out that she was a Mets fan and would travel to Shea to see them! 😍 Good for lawyers and life insurance brokers but not a casual fan. #Booked2019 #NewIn2019 #Autumn

Cinfhen I‘ve seen other reviews that were similar to yours. This sounds like a #BorrowNotBuy 1mo
IamIamIam @Cinfhen Definitely!!! I'd have been really angry if I bought it and only the very last section was about Lee and also had very little information about her looking into Maxwell. I don't like to disparage authors but it's like Lee was thrown in so this book would sell. That being said, the story of Willie Maxwell was really interesting! 1mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage The author must live near me because she‘s making the rounds of nearby bookstores. I‘m glad to have a review, so I can prioritize other author events. 🤪 1mo
IamIamIam @BarbaraTheBibliophage I'd be interested to hear about how she came by the info about Lee and the Maxwell case but I wouldn't really make an effort to go see her, lol! That sounds so mean! Her talking about Lee and Capote did make me want to pull out his giant biography I've never gotten to, though! There's a bonus! Lol 1mo

Our latest episode of Books On The Go is up! Amanda and I discuss the Booker Shortlist, and our book of the week: The Ditch. Have you read it? Let us know what you thought!

Cinfhen Didn‘t know he had a new book. I find his books very polarizing. I HATED the Dinner but really liked 1mo
Cinfhen Still haven‘t read 1mo
Abailliekaras @Cinfhen they certainly have an uncomfortable humour - polarising is a good word for it! I wouldn‘t rush to this one but some parts were accurate & funny. 1mo
Cinfhen I‘ll wait for a #dailydeal or #BorrowNotBuy - 🙏🏼 1mo

What happens when the father you thought you knew may or may not have a whole other secret family? This is part of this novel‘s storyline...as a family comes to terms with the recent death of the patriarch, a woman comes forward to get part of the inheritance for her children. This was an okay read for me, nothing spectacular, just okay. Anyone chasing an inheritance is #chasingrainbows , chasing dreams. #ayupaugust

Cinfhen Sounds good but I‘m getting the feeling this is a #BorrowNotBuy 😉 2mo
squirrelbrain Nice cover though! 😁 2mo

Bloody daft, implausible plot line. Finished it because I basically had to know how the daftness ended. It was 99p, #borrownotbuy and be prepared to eye roll a lot.

MicheleinPhilly SKIP! 2mo
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly wise move 😁 2mo
Andrew65 Sounds as if 98p too much! 😂 2mo

TrishB @Andrew65 had me questioning amazon ratings, currently 4* but 28% of reviews are 3* and less 🤷‍♀️ 2mo
Andrew65 @TrishB For some reason I‘ve never quite trusted Amazon ratings and this possibly confirms it. 🤔 2mo
TrishB @Andrew65 exactly! 2mo
batsy "had to know how the daftness ended" ?? love that 2mo
TrishB @batsy believe me it was still daft! 😁 2mo

This is one of those books I am struggling to review. There were some gut punch moments that really awed me with their insight to human nature and perspective. But do those few moments make up for a lackluster, two dimensional story? The plot had everything going for it, but the story telling fell flat for me.

RealLifeReading Oh I had just put this on my tbr! 2mo
Megabooks I‘m so conflicted about whether to read this. I think I‘m going to wait on the library. Thanks! 2mo
cathipink I felt the same way... I felt like a lot of the characters behaved in expected and/or 'good' ways, which felt false or too easy. An interesting premise but I felt short changed at the end. 2mo

Mdargusch Interesting because I‘ve seen a lot of good reviews for this. 2mo
Cinfhen Great review, I thought the book had a fluffy start but ended strong but I could see why you gave it a so-so rating. I‘d say #BorrowNotBuy is perfectly acceptable @Megabooks 2mo
Cinfhen You should still read it @RealLifeReading but a library copy is fine😊 2mo
RealLifeReading 😀 well I‘m usually borrowing instead of buying books anyway! 2mo

3⭐'s. Good but not great

Cinfhen That‘s generally how I feel about this author‘s books... so it‘s going to be a #BorrowNotBuy 2mo
hyperashley @Cinfhen I haven't read anything else by the author but this didn't blow me away 2mo
Cinfhen I tried her first book and it was just meh, my daughter read her next book and had a similar reaction so I haven‘t been to eager to read this one. 2mo
hyperashley @Cinfhen I thought it sounded good but meh is a good word for how I felt while reading it 2mo

#AyUpAugust Even though I‘ve had a busy weekend, I couldn‘t #stop reading this book. A riveting account of one of the wildest bank heists on US soil and craziest trials to determine the guilt of the Narco 3. I thought journalist Peter Houlahan did a great job of recreating the chaos and timeline of events, making for a compelling and captivating read.

vivastory Thanks for tagging me. This sounds fantastic. I will definitely be adding to my BOTM box next month! 2mo
Megabooks So did the trial eventually get exciting because I got kinda bored at the start of that. I‘ll pick it back up if it does. Glad you liked it!! 2mo
MicheleinPhilly @vivastory It‘s also available on Hoopla. 2mo

Cinfhen I really enjoyed the trial more than the bank heist @Megabooks 🤷‍♀️but I‘m not sure if I would have liked this book on audio @MicheleinPhilly I‘m more of a visual learner/ reader 2mo
Cinfhen I hope you like the book @vivastory 🤞🏼 2mo
MicheleinPhilly Oh I don‘t do audio. The e-book is available on Hoopla. 2mo
Cinfhen Ayyy!!! Good to know @MicheleinPhilly @vivastory you could totally #BorrowNotBuy for this book!!! Love Hoopla ♥️ 2mo
vivastory @MicheleinPhilly Thanks for the heads-up. I just grabbed it on hoopla. 2mo

#AyUpAugust Want #SomethingGood to read???Try this book. It‘s part coming of age, part feel good. Samuel Hill is born with a rare eye condition - red colored pupils, earning him the nickname “Devil Boy” And while many find his plight a curse, his very religious Catholic mother sees it as a gift from God. Her strength & belief gives Sam the courage to embrace his uniqueness. A lovely read but a #BorrowNotBuy 🤓

Kaila-ann I like the borrow not buy distinction 🤔 3mo
Cinfhen @Kaila-ann sometimes I enjoy a book but it doesn‘t mean I need to run out and buy it for $14.95, know what I mean!?!? 😁 3mo
squirrelbrain Sounds interesting - I‘ll stack it and keep an eye out in the library.... 😁 3mo
Cathythoughts Sounds good 👍🏻 3mo
TrishB It got it on kindle offer, will get to it soon..... 3mo

A bit #MoreMehThanYeah. While I did like the setting and premise of the book, it was just a bit too boring to really wow me. The characters felt flat, and some parts moved way too quickly, while others were way too slow.

I‘m counting this as my #SoldiersStory for #Booked2019, since the MC is serving out his compulsory military service for most of the book.

#BookerPrize2019

TrishB I‘m probably going to wait for an offer on this one. Curious but can definitely wait! 3mo
Cathythoughts I was going to let it go ... but #SoldiersStory is a book I need to tick 🤔 (edited) 3mo
Cinfhen I‘ve seen lots of mixed reviews 3mo

Kalalalatja @Cathythoughts it is relatively short, if that helps 🤷‍♀️ @TrishB @Cinfhen definitely a #borrownotbuy or a cheap kindle deal. It wasn‘t bad, but it wasn‘t great either 3mo
TrishB @Cathythoughts I really recommend this one for soldiers story 3mo
Cathythoughts @TrishB thanks ! I just took a screenshot of your suggestion- I‘ve never read John Boyne.. so maybe it‘s time to give him a go 👍🏻 3mo
Cinfhen Thanks, Katja 👍🏻 3mo
