While watching a recent video from booktuber Gunpowder, Fiction & Plot listing some of his favorite reads of 2023 he mentioned the tagged book. This has been on my TBR. While he was talking about it, he went off on a potato metaphor/digression & mentioned bombay potatoes, which I have never heard of but after googling sound delightful.
“Bombay potato, is an Indian dish prepared using potatoes that are cubed, parboiled and (CONT)

vivastory then fried and seasoned with various spices such as cumin, curry, garlic, garam masala, turmeric, mustard seeds, chili powder, salt and pepper.“ (wikipedia)

I haven't had Indian food in a couple of years, but now I'm dying for some lol

vivastory @Ruthiella I've only watched a few videos by him. I remember in one of his videos he dissed a book I loved & I was a bit put off lol but now I take the wise words of The Dude to heart, “That's just your opinion, man“ 3mo
vivastory @Deblovestoread I made some pasta shortly after watching & had to add some spices lol 3mo
vivastory @LeahBergen Right?! They look incredible! 3mo

#TBRTarot #14books14weeks

My last book of August just under the wire. This was a fantastic imagining of Joan of Arc. From her childhood, her rise to fame and her fall it is just incredible to think she was a teenager. I knew a little but this book makes me want to know more about this badass woman warrior.

@CBee

CBee Adding this to my TBR! 8mo

I really enjoyed this book and how the author brought Joan of Arc alive for the reader. Wonderful storytelling brought me totally into the book. This is really rich with details as well. If you love really good historic fiction based on real people add this to your TBR

Excellent fictional narrative of the life of Joan of Arc, from her difficult childhood to her victories and defeats on the battlefield during the Hundred Years War. This Joan is not driven by religion—she‘s fearless and proud and brilliant and flawed and human and determined to bring glory to France. The way the book is written gave me Hilary Mantel “Wolf Hall” vibes. 👍🏼👍🏼

Amiable @Deblovestoread Oh, good! I figured the “Wolf Hall” reference might give some people pause. 😀 I loved “Wolf Hall,” though. 10mo
Amiable @Cuilin I hope this is what Joan was really like! Loved her character. 10mo
Cuilin @Amiable it was very believable, it‘s nice to see a different non-Catholic, non-Shakespeare account of her. 10mo

My very British husband has become an overnight baseball fan after a work trip to Chicago and a night out at Wrigley Fields. As such yesterday despite mad hot weather and a horrific week prior I was taken to see the Cubs vs Cardinals live in London. As a non sporty Brit I was genuinely confused by how little hitting of the ball seemed to happen. My husband was horrified that I even posed this photo!

Ruthiella I‘m an American and baseball bores me. I‘d much rather read! 10mo
AlaMich Go Cubbies!! Yes, Wrigley is a special experience compared to almost all the other ball parks. And yes, baseball can be a very sloooww game! 10mo
Suet624 Good for you!!! 10mo
dabbe We are Diamondbacks fans in AZ, though I've been known to bring something to read myself! Due to the new rules with pitching, the game now is usually 30 minutes faster than it was in the past. Still, there can be some s--l--o--w innings. 🤣⚾️🤗 10mo
Itchyfeetreader @AlaMich he was captivated! If I heard ‘when I went to Wrigley‘ once … @Ruthiella was genuinely confused about how little happened. Growing up on US films and books I assumed it was run-a-plenty! It was not. @dabbe yes I heard a lot about the rule changes me how it‘s now faster and much more exciting! 10mo

A King Charles coronation tale, but this one of Charles VII of France and, more importantly, his briefly-right-hand-woman, Joan D‘Arc. And goodness, this was good. Joan is beaten by her father as a child; grows up strong yet bitter as to how he treated her. And then she becomes a warrior. I loved her fearlessness, her anger at men like her father, her kindness to all others. I really, really hope this was what Joan was actually like.

Thank you @Itchyfeetreader for the book and chocolate - sorry about the poor quality photos but it's very dark and miserable weather in Dorset today. The chocolate is dark, and one is flavoured with juniper berries, for those who can't see it.

jenniferw88 @rockpools ok thanks, but still waiting to be prescribed the anti-virals! How are you? 1y
rockpools @jenniferw88 Oh no! Will you be able to get those today? Just the worst time to get ill/need doctors. I‘m feeling better today, but isolating so as not to share with the rest of the house. I‘m climbing the walls already! 1y

I loved this, but don‘t read for anything related to the version of Joan we have all heard over the years! It‘s quite slow at the beginning -think Matrix/ Hamnet, but warms up.
I am a big fan of this version of Joan ❤️

This was really very good. Joan of Arc or Jean d'Orleans as a historical fiction novel. The author did an excellent job. It's hard to tell how much is made up. But that's also a pretty good indication that she did a great job with it.
